Ed's is the freakin' bomb. Do people still say that? I guess I just did.
Walking into this tiny shop on a given Sunday afternoon, one will be greeted with a joyful array of colours. All sorts of delicous ice creams and gelatos, different textures and flavours, all happily seated in their tubs, waiting. Waiting, just for you.
I've sampled the orange chocolate, the lemon gelato, the dark chocolate, and the pistachio, and have yet to question how great this little place is. I'll be back soon to huff down some of this burnt marshmallow I've heard all kinds of fuss over. I'm sure, that it too, will not disappoint.
Until next time, Ed.
Update: Tested out the burnt marshmallow, and, man, it's good! Bravo! -

Being lactose intolerant, it's a huge deal for me to cram some cream into my trap because I'm going to feel sort of sickish after. But after my first cup of cold creamy love from Ed's Real Scoop, I'm willing to pay the price because Ed's is real good.
Seems like it doesn't matter how cold it is outside, people love ice cream, and the night I was there was no exception. Even at a brisk 40 degrees F, I found a gaggle of folks looking for a cool treat, me included! Not really knowing which direction to go I pulled up some handy dandy Yelp reviews and decided on their smallest scoop/cup... half burnt marshmallow ice cream and half of the richest chocolate gelato I've ever tasted... in my life! (Side note, I've added "in my life" to many reviews that I feel strongly about, but I'm noticing it's pretty unnecessary, eh? What more does "in my life" mean that you didn't gather from the strong statement that proceeded it.) Seriously, even if you don't like chocolate, go a grab a taster spoon to simply understand what I'm talking about. The flavor was so complex, had so many underlying notes, it was somethin.
The burnt marshmallow ice cream was tasty too, not quite as life changing as the chocolate gelato, but I'm glad I combined both. Throw some crushed graham cracker on there and you have a unique concoction that'll leave you wanting s'more. (See what just happened there). -

This place is AMAZING!! Even after a really filling brunch at Lady Marmalade down the street there was room for this divine place.
My boyfriend had the Cinnamon and Burnt Marshmallow Ice Creams.
I had the Spiced Chocolate Gelato and the Pistachio Gelato. We bot had it on small sugar cones.
If we hadn't just eaten, the freshly made waffles cones smelled amazing and a must try for next time. :) -

So i'm here sitting with my mom who's not the most internet savy. She told me that the ice cream here is great, yet the serving size leaves much to be desired. After 3 visits to this fine establishment she noticed the size of her "medium" cup was shrinking in relation to the warmer weather. Over $4 with tax for a pensioner, who is not getting value for the money is sad in this diminishing economy. Nevertheless she quite enjoys the burnt marshmellow. Maybe a seniors discount is in order.

Hazelnut gelato affogato? Yes, please.
Despite today being a bit chilly, it was totally worth it.
Also, they were playing good ol' 90's pop music when I was there today. Loved it! -

Stopped in here on the way out of Leslieville at the recommendation of my friend. We were trying to avoid a bit of rain spatter that had just started up (and not so secretly were obviously trying to indulge our sweet tooths).
Not being familiar with the place, I was a little torn as whether to try their gelato or their ice cream - so I consulted my Yelp app which did not help much. I ended up going with the Burnt Marshmallow flavoured ice cream which did not disappoint.
My friend went with the hazelnut gelato affogato , which as a self-proclaimed affogato-connoisseur, comes 2nd on her list of all-time best affogato .
It was not a busy day on the Sunday we arrived, possibly due to the Easter Sunday long weekend, or the chilly weather in the afternoon, but enjoyed the selection of music they had going on.
Would come back if in the area, and try their gelatos or affogato next time. -

Ed's continues to impress!
So many different kinds of ice cream.
They even had a "Stout" flavour.
My fav is the Creme Brulee --- sooooo creamy.
They do give samples if you want to try before you buy.
I have to say though -- love their Gelato. They have a Chocolate with a Chili kick or just Dark Chocolate. The Pistachio is awesome, as is the Blood Orange.
Also, the size for the Gelato cups is deceptive, they fill it up and so you get a lot. I always get two flavours in the medium cup.
There is sitting inside and a couple of benches outside. -

Awesome service! Steve is as friendly as they get! Not only do they make killer ice cream, gelato and sorbets, but they make a kickass milkshake! Get the Brett Shake named after a buddy in the hood that goes there everyday, a great concoction of burnt marshmallow ice cream and espresso ice cream. The beans come from Mercury Espresso Bar. They're open late too!

My goto ice cream place.
Great rotating selection of ice cream and gelato. The leslieville location has a larger variety (compared to the beaches location)
Can't go wrong with the flavours. I love their French mint, Pistachio, and Mercury Espresso flavours. -

The ice cream here is really excellent; it's creamy, flavourful, and satisfying. And if ice cream wasn't already enough of a draw, the smell of fresh waffle cones will likely do you in. Alongside the standard flavours are offerings with a local twist: Swirl (wine bar) Sangria, Mercury (coffee bar) Espresso, and Rowe Farms' (grocer) Bacon Maple - all shops within a couple blocks.
Not-to-miss flavours include Hazelnut, Mercury Espresso, and Burnt Marshmallow.Listed in: Leslieville for the Foodie

BEST ICE CREAM EVER!!!!
Every single flavour of ice cream or gelato has been amazing. I've never had a bad experience here. It would be hard to pick a favorite flavour, but if pressed, I'd have to go with Sweet Cream. Mmmmm... -

Ed's Ice Cream is the place that keeps Queen St E here alive (if that makes any sense). The scent of their waffle cones often fills the streets, and they stay open late (till 10:30 or 11pm during the summer - talk about smart!) and open till 9:30pm now....
I love gelato - and they carry a great variety, and I have friends that swear that their ice cream is absolutely to die for. There's often a line up... If you're having a bad day, a scoop of baci flavoured gelato makes those troubles seem miles away...
PS - they have free toppings like gummi bears, reese pieces etc...

Can't complain about Ed's! Love the flavours, the staff, the music, and the atmosphere.
I especially love that the ice-cream is made in-house, and that they pair up with other businesses (like Mercury Espresso Bar) for unique, seasonal flavours. PB Chocolate is my fave! -

This place reminds me of back in the day where everyone hangs out infront of the store with their icecream. A lot of kiddies of course with parents chasing them down with napkins :)
Been here a few times because my friend works literally next door in the dental clinic. Good way to kill time while waiting for her.
My fav is the burnt marshmellow. I think this is the only store that has this unique flavour.
Staff are friendly and welcoming, always a pleasure to deal with.
Prices are reasonable and they have some interesting flavours that you don't get at your regular stores like Baskin Robbins or Laura Secord.
Great place for a summer treat. -

I made a special trip out to Ed's Real Scoop as my kick off to the summer ice cream season - yay!
I was somewhat overwhelmed by the selection of real ice cream and gelato. Unique flavors like red chili chocolate enticed me. I ended up getting a combination of two gelato flavors - bold red chili and cool pistachio - delicious!
The line up was long, but quick, given the assembly-line work ethic of the friendly staff. I liked the option of getting multiple flavors in the cup size of your choice. Kudos to Ed's for their flexibility, quality and service. Possible downside is the constant crowd on a hot day and need to line up outside the store. The price is also a bit steep, but you're paying for quality product. -

This place is rated best for ice cream and gelato both on hipster and yuppy blogs. Finally ventured out to Leslieville to check out what the fuss is about.
Goal: Compare their burnt marshmallow to Greg's 'roasted marshmallow'.
First impression walking into Ed's: This must be what happiness smells like :)
Service: Friendly but mixed up the order for cone type
Price: Cheaper than Greg's kiddie size.
At first taste: Burnt marshmallow tasted marshmallowy.
After a few more licks: A bit too caramelly sweet, lacking the burnt part which Greg's does so well. After a while I was worried I got some other flavour. Still not sure if I actually had 'burnt marshmallow'.
Alternate lick: Pistachio from the BF's. It was very good.
Overall impression: They definitely have really good ice cream and I'll return, but to try some other flavour. -

So it was really hot this past weekend and I was sitting in my poorly air conditioned apartment thinking "man, I could really go for some delicious ice cream."
Being a resident Leslieville-ian, I wandered a few blocks down Queen and entered Ed's for the first time. Now, I've seen the massive popularity of this place time and time again on my way home from work, but I'd never had the inclination to go in myself.
But man, am I glad I did. They had so many delicious sounding flavours, I literally spent at least 15 minutes in awe before the helpful and friendly servers walked me through a few of his favourites. I walked away with a combination of chocolate orange and white chocolate raspberry.
I immediately entered ice cream heaven.
Seriously, Ed's is the real deal when it comes to ice cream in Toronto. Not only is their selection unreal, but the service is equally as impressive. I'm on the fast track to obesity after finding this east end gem. -

Ed's is definitely the best place for ice cream/gelato in the east end. In the summer the lines are pretty long in the evening and on the weekend, but that is to be expected. Ed's is also a good place to bring your dog to pick up other dogs.
There are only two things keeping Ed's from getting 5-stars.
The first is that there is a weird break in the line between the ice cream section and the cash, which results from their serving process (you kind of have to see it to understand), and people will come in and place themselves within the break, basically jumping ahead of a dozen people who have been waiting for a while. This is partly the fault of the line jumping patrons for not being more aware as well as the patrons who don't speak up against it. But it's also Ed's fault for not having some mechanism from preventing this from happening.
The other issue is that I went there one winter evening and there was a sign that said "Back in 5 mins". I don't have a problem with the fact that the person had left, it was one guy working by himself and probably needed dinner. The problem I have is with the message, 5 minutes from when? Just tell me the time you'll be back so I can decide whether or not I want to wait.Listed in: The bEast End, Dog Spots

Pumpkin Ice cream?
Peanut Butter?
Are you shitting me? This is ice cream heaven.
Having worked and travelled in Italy, sampling gelato far too much, I can say without a doubt, this ice cream and their gelatos are my 2nd favourite in the world. That's pretty amazing.
The pistachio gelato is fantastic, it isn't the radioactive sweet stuff you get at a lot of gelato shops.
My experience at Ed's is that each flavour is the concentrated, best and pure expression of itself in ice cream form. I only wish there was one in the West end. -

I just love Ed's Real Scoop!
Red Hot Chili Chocolate Gelato at Ed's Real Scoop is now my new fave! Yes being Hot and Spicy lady like me, I found the dessert that fit my style. First taste is so rich with chocolate favour and the hint of spiciness at the bottom of my throat as an after taste. hmmmm......yay.......
The guy that serves me the ice cream is so nice and cheerful. I have to say the services here is excellent. It is so hard to decide on which favours since there are so many to pick from. I might have to try every single one I have an eye for and still cannot make a decision!
Another reason I love the ice cream here is they has more complex flavour.. not just like some sweet sugary ice cream that the only thing I can say is it is sweet!
Yes I will be back! And I won't be counting the calories or the fat content! -

Ed's is a nice little ice cream parlor in Leslieville. Their flavors are unique, but the ice cream itself is pretty ordinary. It's a nice looking place and their prices are okay.
*** DESSERT ***
I had the banana chocolate and maple walnut ice cream. The ice cream is creamy, definitely a cut above store-bought ice cream but it didn't stand out as being particularly unique. What is unique though, is the flavors. I never saw banana chocolate anywhere else and it tastes just like its name. The maple walnut was also good and has a very authentic maple syrup taste.
*** SERVICE ***
Service was good. As you look at the different flavors and ponder which to get a server approaches and asks you for your order. They readily give you samples of anything.
*** ATMOSPHERE ***
Ed's is clean and looks like it could be a small deli or ice cream parlor. The first thing you seen upon entering is the gelato display. Around the corner where the line is located is the ice cream display. The parlor is fairly small and can seat about 10 people.
*** PRICE ***
Pricing for 2 scoops is pretty decent.
* Regular Cup [2 scoops] | $3.90 *
*** EXPERIENCE ***
Ed's is a great place for dessert. The flavors are unique though the ice cream itself is just regular ice cream. The service is good and the place is clean if you want to sit and enjoy your dessert. Pricing is good. I would like to return here for the gelato, especially the famed Red Hot Chili Chocolate Gelato. -

Having been to the Beaches version of Ed's, I have to say this Leslieville version didn't have the KID-in-Candy Store feel I so enjoyed on the east end. Along with the weak Blueberry flavour in the Blueberry Pie Ice Cream, I would give this Ed's -0.5 Star less than that memorable one I encountered before. 3.5 *Star*
The register is at the corner spot right in-between the Gelato fridge and the Ice Cream fridge, so while 5-7 customers browse along the stretch of the frozen dessert vicinity it makes the line-up somewhat into mishmash disorganized as I think I took over a gentleman's spot to make my order, sorry Dude!
There was a note that if you want to order Gelato, you'll have to ask for it on the Ice Cream side but even with that it's a bit unorganized. This place almost needed a numerical waiting system like the Butcher counters.Listed in: 3.5 ***Stars***, Desserts - Frozen

I went to Ed's based on one of those days you're really craving ice cream, and someone suggests something to you.
Ed's reminded me of the ice cream places I saw while I was in Germany, and even better, they had the flavour that I enjoyed almost every day while in Germany, and it was just as good as I remembered. This is not how it's spelt or even pronounced, but I'll do my best, "stratciatella"??? It's like a vanilla chocolate chip, chunky goodness. But it's not sweet... it's almost a savoury-sweet concoction. I don't really know what's going on with it, but it's great.
I've sampled the burnt marshmallow, and I don't know how they did it, but it actually tastes like a fire roasted marshmallow. A girlfriend of mine tried some ice cream from there once, but I've forgotten what it was. All in all, three ice creams tried, three ice creams delicious. Will always go back here. -

Ed's is the real deal for ice cream! A great selection of flavors and always a new flavor to try when you go in (Maple Bacon ice cream, Guinness ice cream, etc.)
The staff is always ready to offer up suggestions if you
Can't decide.
You can also get chocolate ice cream cups with ice cream scoops in them (great for dinner parties). With more then one location throughout Toronto, there is no reason not to choose Ed's on a hot day! -

Ended up here after dinner. Big lineup for a late night plenty of flavors. I ended up with the Cassis Gelato and it was what I expected it to be (sour and smooth) some interesting flavors one of the gelato apparently had chillis in it so I wanted to try but alas it was sold out. Maybe next time. Service was OK and place looks clean.

I just had to come back and give this 5 stars. The ice cream here is just so damn delicious! I came in and got 2 pints (pumpkin/burnt marshmallow and raspberry/green apple). WOW. I got it yesterday and half the marshmallow/pumpkin is gone, it is just that good!
The only thing I'm very unhappy about is that I did not know about this place earlier. All those summers I missed out on eating here!

The day I heard Ed's was moving into Leslieville I literally jumped for joy! Their original location in the Beaches has been an east end staple for ages, but this new location puts delicious hand made ice cream within a 5 minute walk from my front door.
They feature a wide selection of hand made ice cream and gelato. All your favourite flavours are present as well as a few "local" specialties. With Mercury Cafe across the street it's great to see that they've partnered up to create a special Mercury Espresso Bean flavoured ice cream. The front of the shop is filled with a rainbow assortment of gelato that is as fun to look at as it is to taste.
Just like at the original location, Ed's features a front window view of their waffle irons and churns out fresh waffle cones that are to die for! Nothing beats walking in with the smell of fresh hot waffle cones in the air.
There's an abundance of seating as well as a selection of cottage style chairs out front so you can enjoy your gelato and ice cream while hanging with the neighbours and people watching.
Of note, they also offer great take home options with all their flavours being available in handy tub size container.
Be forewarned... the place isn't cheap, but considering you are getting locally produced handmade ice cream it's worth the slight premium over the big name franchise options.
Thanks for moving into Leslieville Ed!Listed in: My Leslieville Favs

You know how Homer moans and drools when he tastes something really yummy? Yep - that was me last night at Ed's when I sampled the Macaroon ice cream. The people staring at me while I enjoyed my spoonful...jealous they didn't pick the same flavours as me.
This place is going to be another spot that I frequent and will become a favourite.
Ed's offers home made ice cream, frozen yogurt and gelato. Talk about variety! Staff are more than happy to let you sample a few flavours to decide which one(s) you want to let your taste buds swim in. They are also very accommodating and letting you mix (in one scoop!!) two flavours. I had the macaroon and the chocolate peanut butter fudge. Oh, saweet, jeahusus, it was mind blowing good. I inhaled it, and stood with my will power strong, and did not go back in to get more. Good Shari!
You can get your ice cream in the form of a milkshake, scooped into an homemade waffle cone, in a cup, or if you are looking to take some home - in a pint.
Outstanding shop, Ed! Keep on churning! -

Ed's is my favorite ice cream place for several reasons.
It is in Leslieville, as am I, and is literally moments from my house. The treats are fresh, delicious, creative, and and locally made. The service is friendly, and accommodating. I have called and begged them to stay open for "five more minutes" so I could go grab a pint and they did so, happily.
I really appreciate artisan products and the Gelato is wonderful. Pistachio, Chili Chocolate, Green apple, Blood Orange, LEMON are all fantastic. I am not really a fan of ice ream, but my SO loves the burnt marshmallow and stout.
Every time we have out-of-hood visitors Ed's is on our go-to list and everyone always enjoys it. Year round, friends come to visit and show up with Ed's cups when they walk in the door. It is definitely a highlight of the neighborhood. Well worth it.Listed in: Best of the Best, Leslieville, Riverdale &…, Leslieville Proper

Ice cream is one of my very favorite things. And the ice cream here is excellent--lots of choice, including gelato, and awesome special flavors made in partnership with local businesses (like the Rowe Farms caramel bacon crunch--seriously, just try it.) The staff's super cool about letting you sample, too, so you don't get burned by buying something you end up disliking (not gonna lie, a tiny spoon of the bacon ice cream was enough for me).

Dear Ed's Real Scoop,
You are my hero! Your delicious ice cream flavours never cease to amaze me. Today I sampled pumpkin ice cream and thought I was eating a heavenly piece of pumpkin pie. As tempted as I was put that pumpkin ice cream into a sugar cone, I couldn't resist the butter pecan. My mouth is still swooning over the deliciousness of it.
I think I love you. -

This place is amazing!! You will find it with a long line up outside during the summer months but it is always worth the wait.
I have never been disappointed on my flavour choices; Ed's has made even the most traditionally "bland" flavours into incredible ice creams (try their tahitian vanilla bean, it will surprise you!!).
The texture and richness of their ice creams and gelatos are perfect, without the heavy after effects of other store bought brands.
As a last note, their seasonal Pumpkin pie flavour that's out right now tastes just like the real thing. -

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip. That started from my colonial house, aboard my Toyota Camry.
I pick up my phone, and I call my friend Kevin
Me: "Hey dawg, where you at?"
Kevin: "I'm outside Ed's Real Scoop...gettin' my freak on"
Me; "awwww yeah, break me off a piece of that, yo"
So I gangsta lean drive all the way there bumpin Andrea Nickatina on my factory issued speakers. My dawg kevin and a few other gangstas were already there.
I got out of the car and pulled up my sagging jeans...hey I don't know either, apparently this is the style, although I have no idea what is so appealing about your pants falling down, but whatever. I throw up some gang signs to my homies, and we did complex handshakes.
I roll with my dawg Bobby inside of Ed's, and this is what confused me right off the bat - what the hell was that smell? It was a mixture of moth balls, pig intestines, and vomit cough syrup. No, I'm not joking. Maybe there was an accident in the back and that was just the smell of whatever they used to clean it up, but man...talk about buzz kill. I love ice cream. I was looking forward to eating ice cream, but whatever that smell was...just wow.
Anyway, service was decent, but lacked smiles. Maybe the person was about to get off their shift and was just annoyed, but c'mon now...try to smile for my amusement damn it. The ice cream was sub par but as I stated in a previous review, I think that's just because I'm from the bay area, and we have better ice cream, so my standards are extremely high.
I also ate my ice cream gangsta style. By that I mean, I had my cup titled on its side, and I scooped my ice cream with the other end of the spoon, and every time I took a bite, I leaned my head back, squinted my eyes, and gave a "westside" gangsta sign to all my homies. -

Please don't be answering and talking on the phone as you are serving me my ice cream. Poor service makes for a not so wanting to to go back experience.
This was the third time I have been to ED'S on Queen... I didn't order the flavourless ice cream this time I actually ordered the gelato, Passionfruit. Yum it was good, the Cassis was stale tasting like it had sat in the case for a week or so. 25 % on product and about 10% on service...
This should be a fun and pleasurable experience. Smiles would be nice, not talking on the phone as you are serving me would be even nicer and a Thank You would have me wanting to come back for more.
As it is I will be content to wander by and see if the urge to be just another smuck looking for a tasty treat can be satisfied. I know it will not come even close from the impatient and impersonal staff.
PS I got a box of their chocolates for Valentines day and they were some of the worst treats I have ever had... I was glad to give them out to those I was not so in love with. -
