This specific Edo is the best Edo in the city. The food is always healthy, fresh and good at Edo, but I go here because of Kai - who unfortunately changed his name to Henri. Whatever his name, Kai's the man. He's older and short and if you go on a day that Kai's doing food it's always better.

He knows how to cook the tofu properly, chopping it up, leaving it on a little longer and steaming it so it's not cold and half-cooked when it gets to your plate. And if you ask for no rice, most of the servers get confused and their brains internally combust. But Kai understands and gives you more vegetables and mushrooms instead.

The only thing I don't like about this Edo is that food court gets pretty jammed at lunchtime, and the counter's small, so there's not much elbow room, but these guys work fast and you have your food in no time.

Edo Japan is one of my favorite food franchises.  Today the Kingsway Mall location was somewhat less than spectacular.

The lady who took my order was in a hurry and borderline rude with me.

My food took longer than I expected even though I was there after the supper rush had died down.  Even more insulting was the fact that the two people who came in AFTER me received their food before me.  (The couple that was in front of me weren't too impressed with this either.)

I will not be returning to this location any time soon.

If you like Japanese food but don't like paying the price for it then Edo Japan is an excellent place to fill the need you have.  After you order they prepare it all up so it's not like they just dish it out from warmers and then send you on your way; it's fast but not that fast.  Because food actually does take time to cook you do need to wait a little bit.  They guys at the Kingsway location (not located in the mall) are pretty nice.  If you are going to order the sushi I can't tell you which one is good because I really don't eat too much of it.  But the rolls are good (is that also sushi?  I don't know).  But I know that the teriyaki chicken, the teriyaki chicken and beef and the sukiyaki beef, and the bento boxes (you choose what you want) are all really good.  Don't forget to try the Udon soup with beef or chicken (both are good); it's great soup to have on a cold day in Edmonton.

EDO Japan serves Japanese food fast, but it doesn't make it Japanese fast food. This place is a step beyond your regular burgers, wraps and other food on the run. All meals are delicious and priced very reasonably. On EDO's menu you will find teriyaki chicken, beef and shrimp, udon soup, bento boxes, sushi, maki and even sashimi. I never summoned the courage to eat raw fish at EDO, so I cannot comment on its quality. Some of the items on the menu I have tried and found to be delicious are chicken yakisoba with thick noodles and vegetables, sizzling shrimp and curry chicken. I find that most meals at EDO taste similar to each other since most include rice or noodles, your choice of meat, and vegetables (broccoli, carrots, and mushrooms) prepared in a wok. Even udon soup consists of the same ingredients swimming in a broth. But that doesn't matter because EDO gets high marks for the freshness of ingredients and the taste of meals overall.
