So, Edmonton's Veterinarian's Emergency Clinic only receives four stars because this really isn't someplace you want to take your furry friend.  Unfortunately, I've had to take my kitty twice to the clinic.

The first time I took him in, it was because he had a nasty stomach ache from something I fed him that he wasn't supposed to be fed.  (Go ahead - judge me now for being a terrible cat parent.)  Nelson and I checked in, and were informed that, considering his conditions weren't critical, it would be a 90 minute wait before a veterinarian would be available to see us.  Considering (human) hospital wait times in Alberta, I figured 90 minutes wasn't that bad.  (I can't say the same for Nelson).  At the time, there was also an emergency in which an animal was injured in a farming accident.  Obviously, I was OK with that animal taking priority over my kittie's tummy ache.  The waiting room has a television to watch and magazines to flip through while pet parents wait to see the veterinarian.  When a veterinarian was finally available to examine Nelson, we were ushered into a private room where (I believe) Nelson was able to sniff and become familiar with before the veterinarian came in.  I explained what happened, what I had fed him, and also explained that although I love my cat I'm not willing to spend a crazy amount of money for him to get better.  Without chastising me for being a horrible cat parent, the veterinarian prescribed two affordable and effective medications that would have Nelson back to his normal self in about two weeks.  At reception, I was provided final instructions on how to administer his medication, as well as some baby food for him to eat so that he would consume at least some fluids, and was sent on my way.  The bill came to around $200, which included the examination and medication.

The second time it was because my furry little guy had a urinary tract infection - not uncommon for husky, male cats.  I suspected as much when he emerged from his litter box growling and, ahem, constantly grooming himself.  Again, he was rushed to the emergency clinic.  I explained his symptoms, and the staff were very concerned as urinary tract infections can be lethal if not treated right away.  Nelson was whisked away for a quick examination to see if he had a blockage, and after determining there was no blockage, we were informed that it would be a 90 minute wait.  When we finally saw the veterinarian (a different one this time), I again stated that although I love my cat, I don't want to spend lots of money curing him, but also want him to be prescribed something that will be effective.  Again, he was prescribed two medications.  I was instructed at reception how to administer the medication, and was also given pH balanced cat food to start him on a preventative diet.

On our last visit to the clinic, I noticed a woman emerge from a room to the left of the entrance.  I presume she had been in there for a while as I she emerged about 40 minutes into my wait.  Her face was teary, and I concluded she had just put down her beloved, furry friend.  I was grateful to know that, although the clinic probably deals with all sorts of animal illnesses, ailments, and injuries, that they provide a private space for pet owners to say goodbye to their animal companions.

This isn't really a place you want to go, because if you do, it means your pet is pretty sick. Because they're open 24/7, they're the place to go when an urgent issue arises but your current vet is closed for the evening. Although I came here because my cat was really sick (oh no!), the staff here were great, and kitty left feeling a lot better (oh yeah!).

After an initial check-up on Monday morning with my regular vet clinic found some issues with Waldo, I was feeling on edge, waiting for things to get better or worse. Things were definitely worse by Tuesday night, so we called a few emerg clinics around town. The EEVC told us they weren't busy and there wouldn't be a wait time, so we immediately drove on over.

It's a really nice facility, with a big open lobby and a sleeping cat in the corner. The receptionist/nurse took us pretty quickly and took a look at him. She was very, very nice and great with the cat. Then the doctor came in and checked him over too (also a nice dude and clearly very knowledgeable). After receiving a cost list and deciding to go ahead with it (bless you, pet insurance), we let him then take Waldo to another room to run some tests.

The first test came back with results, so we didn't have to do the X-Ray (less cost = good). They found the problem and gave us two prescriptions with very clear instructions. Although Waldo wasn't a very happy kitty from the injections and tests, he's already looking a little bit better. I appreciated how up front the vets were about the costs and the very clear instruction sheet they sent home with us. They also faxed all the information over to our regular vet.

I really hope I don't have to go back here, but if I do, I know Waldo will be in very good hands!
