Love the humane society. They are clean, professional, and one of those facilities where you actually wonder "Was my pet happier there than at home alone with us? Will she miss her friends?"
The staff and volunteers are fantastic. The animals get great spaces, enrichment and are well cared for. This is a fantastic shelter and the adoption process was very simple, affordable and easy.
They also have a great affordable pet shop on site where the proceeds all go back to support the shelter. I was thrilled to hear this and actually bought food and goodies there and found them to be cheaper than pet shops anyways!
It is slightly out of the way, being almost in St. Albert, but it is well worth the trek and whatever your need, they can help you out. I'd wholeheartedly support you going today to check out their amazing selection of furry friends! -

The facility is awesome, I truly believe the pets are well cared for and comfortable here. When they had their first "Free Cat Day" we went and ended up coming home with two cats (to equal number of laps, of course). We were told EHS had no health concerns regarding either cat.
We followed up with a local vet after bringing them home. They were found to be in good health, except the one had a gum issue. We tried antibiotics, steroids, all kinds of things recommended by the vet. Nothing worked. Surgery to extract all her teeth has been recommended as the only way to relieve her of her inflamed gums (Stomatitis). I'm not sure how the EHS missed this. I guess it's possible she fell between the cracks as it was crazy busy that day, but this is something that should have been caught before.
Our visit was pleasant, everyone seemed helpful and the adoption process went as fast as it possibly could given the crowd of people. I did feel they were possibly just pushing adoptions through for the sake of getting the cats out the door though. I guess I can't really blame them, there were people everywhere trying to adopt cats, and there is no way they could have done an in-depth analysis on every application (ie calling vets to ensure current pets are vaccinated).
While I would go back again, I think I would prefer to look at other options around the city that take a little more care in the adoption process, and that pay closer attention to the complete health of the pet. I'm not saying EHS neglected or didn't care for our cat's health, but to have a condition over-looked is worrying. Maybe the adoption process is more thorough on non-event days, which is why I would consider trying EHS again.
To sum up: the facility is great, the staff/volunteers seemed friendly, and they worked incredibly efficiently on a day when adopter turnout was huge. One of our cats we have adopted ended up having a pre-existing medical condition not disclosed to us by EHS as they must have missed it. The adoption process we experience was less thorough than I expected, possibly due to the number of people wishing to adopt. -

The Edmonton Humane Society is a great not-for-profit organization doing great work for animals. They're facility is amazing and their staff are courteous and seem to genuinely care about what they do. If you're planning on going here, don't expect to leave without an animal because seeing some of their animals are going to tug on the ol' heart strings.

Seems the majority of peeps reviewing this place thinks it's just AMAZING!!! Well they are absolutely right!! When compared to the old SPCA location on Yellowhead - well there really is no comparison!
I spend as much time here as I possible can - which is not enough. Although I am not in a position in my life to take on another rescue at this point (I have two cats and one turtle), just spending time with the animals is fulfilling and brightens my day exponentially! I absolutely adore the idea of the come and go style where you can visit any one of the numerous `cat rooms`and sit down with about 5-10 cats (depending on the size of the room) at any time - and just soak it all in!!! To me, that's heaven - only thing better would be if I could take them ALL home with me!!! Same idea with the dogs...they each have their own room (some with access to an outside pen) with their info chart posted at the door. They keep the more high energy dogs locked to stop smaller children from walking in and possibly getting injured, but any staff member can let you in for a visit.
Their adoption process is slightly lengthy and they make sure 100% to work with adopters to make sure that the animal is a good fit for their family (I believe you even have to bring any pets you already have with you on adoption day to meet the animal). This is CRUCIAL!!!!! I really wish ANYONE thinking of bringing an animal into their life would have to go through this process! Given the number of unwanted, abandoned pets in our city, I feel very strongly that adoption is the ONLY responsible way to bring a pet into your life right now!
I like to support their pet store as well as you know the funds are going to a good place - selection is limited but good quality! Prices are comparable with any other pet store but a percentage of the funds goes right back into EHS programs!! If you are a pet lover (cats in particular have a high need for good homes) I beg you to visit EHS! Even if you're one of those `funny` I cant love an animal unless its a puppy/kitten kind of people - First, they have countless kittens (for a higher adoption fee), and puppies on occasion - Second, I challenge you to go there and NOT fall in love with an animal there if you are a legitimate animal lover!Listed in: All About Animals

I turned into a 5-year-old yesterday afternoon when I finally received my belated birthday present from Michael J - a kitty! Growing up with allergic brothers, I was a sad, pet-free child. But no more!
We knew that once it was time to get a cat, we would find him or her at the Edmonton Humane Society. They have such a great program here and really make adopting an easy and enjoyable process.
The cats are in a bunch of different rooms you can go hang out in. The first two lounges were really big with 10 or 12 kitties and lots of toys and spaces for naps. Down the other hallway is a series of smaller rooms with 5 or 6 cats hanging out in each. That's where we found our new best friend, originally named "Aaaaahh!" (in a room with "Boo!") but now known as Waldo. He's a gorgeous 3-year-old, grey-and-white short-hair who loves to cuddle and play. The best!
After you pick out your cat, they take you through a very informative 15-minute video on how to take care of your cat, and then a bunch of forms to sign. They also took us through his medical history, which I appreciated.
What is especially handy is the pet store on-site (non-profit, just like the rest of the agency). We had nothing at home for Waldo, but luckily we were able to pick up everything we needed before we left. Scratching post, litter box, the works!
The staff here were so great, I can't thank them enough. It was great to see all the volunteers they had out, playing with the animals. (Best volunteer job ever, I think!) If we pick up another animal, it will definitely be from the Edmonton Humane Society.Listed in: Family Friendly, Memorable Customer Service, Kitty!, Non-Profit

My visit to the EHS was a spontaneous one, but I am so glad that I went. My roommate and I were visiting my brother and his girlfriend in Edmonton, where we met their adorable little kitten, Alexandra McQueen. He told me they'd gotten her at the EHS and that it was great, that they had little rooms for all the dogs where you could go in and pet them. As a dog lover I wanted to go so we scrapped our afternoon plans and headed over.
Of course, as soon as we got there my roommate spotted a fat, white chihuahua...the exact dog I'd always wanted. He was in a room with two other chihuahuas. Thanks to their awesome set up, I was able to go in and visit with him. He was super shy, but I fell in love instantly.
A fabulous admin staff named Lucy came in and encouraged me to take him home. She was SO sweet - I email her update photos of him now.
It did take a few hours to process the adoption, which was a really tough few hours because I just wanted to get my baby home, but it was nice to see how busy they were and that lots of people were bringing animals home.
Overall they were very helpful and the building looked very clean and well kept. The animals looked happy and I am SO thankful that I went. I will definitely keep supporting the EHS and all the other great shelters that help out our furry friends :) -

EHS is phenomenal! And believe me, I have some pretty high standards!
I love to go and sit in their rooms and pet the kitties and give some much needed love!
One of the coolest things I've noticed over the past year is their "Wish Upon a Whisker Wednesdays." Now, it's not every Wednesday, but if you sign up for their e-mail listing or add them on Facebook they give you advance notice.
Wish Upon a Whisker Wednesday (which is happening in 2 days - June 15th) is when they waive all adoption fees for adopting a cat that meets their qualification - whatever they have too much of at the time basically!
In 2 days, June 15th, they are waiving the adoption fees on ALL ADULT MALE cats! Seriously people! They come neutered and fully vaccinated! I believe the normal adoption fee is around $140. They are of course accepting donations as well.
Every year I make sure to buy my Entertainment book from EHS to support them! And when our cat had to be put down this past year, I went there and made a donation in his name to help with their other kitties.
I just can't say enough great things about this place! And their new facility is spectacular - beautiful - and with loads of green space outside to take a dog for a walk! They even have indoor/outdoor cat rooms for kitties to get fresh air, too!
I heart EHS! -

This is one of the best animal rescue facilities in the world. It makes me beyond proud to be an Edmontonian when I come here and volunteer. The animals have fabulous accommodations and the staff treat all with respect and love. If you are looking for a new furry friend this is the place to find one.

I agree with the review below. How can you not respect the Edmonton Humane Society? They do their best to accommodate abandoned animals. When I say best, I mean best.
They have rooms set up for all the animals with toys and things that keep them happy and active. The dogs all have their own rooms. They have everything set up so if you are going to adopt an animal you can interact with them comfortably and see how well you get a long.
If you can't adopt I would urge you to make donations to them so they can continue caring for these animals as long as they can. -

How can I give a humane society less than five stars? I love animals, and I am grateful and happy that Edmonton has a home for all the abandoned animals. Edmonton Humane Society recently relocated, and now it occupies a huge place called Chappelle Centre for animal care. When I first walked into this grande building, I was mesmerized and impressed with how beautiful the interior is. There are long and wide hallways on each side of which there are separate rooms for dogs (each doggy gets his/her own room) and large rooms for cats. Most of the cats aren't caged, and walk around freely in their rooms. You are welcome to come into the rooms, and play with the furry creatures. The cats' rooms are very fancy, equipped with chairs, climbing and scretching posts and everything:) Some of the cats are still in cages but you are allowed to take them out and pat them. Once you experience close contact with some of these amazing cats, you may become so attached right away, that you are bound to take one home with you.
The dogs at Edmonton Humane Society are housed very well. Each of them gets his separate room, and there are even rooms with little doors that lead to the outside yard, so that the dogs can sneak in and out whenever they want. You can come into the room, and communicate with any dog. I personally don't do that because looking into a dog's eyes and knowing that I cannot take him home, breaks my heart. I want the dog so desperately but since I rent, I am not allowed to have one. So I usually don't go near dog rooms because I simply cannot handle it!
My cat is from Edmonton Humane Society. He is my furry baby:) As soon as I become a proud home owner, I will adopt a dog and another cat. For now, the only two ways I can help Edmonton Humane Society is by making donations, and by occassionally purchasing cat food and litter from them.
Please, consider adopting your next pet instead of buying him at a pet store. Edmonton Humane Society dwellers are beautiful, kind and grateful, and make amazing and royal pets! -

The Edmonton humaine society staff lack in training and courtesy. They supply food that is of poor quality for puppies. The staff lack courtesy and training on how to identify the various animals and there needs. Animals who are sick are housed in the same area as the healthy ones.

The Edmonton Humane Society is amazing! They have rooms set up for the animals that are much nicer than the cages some shelters use. People are free to go in and meet the animals and interact with them. There is also a very well stocked pet store where you can get everything you need for your new friend. They also offer training and behavioral modification classes if your new buddy needs a bit of polishing. Their adoption process is fairly easy but still thorough. They also microchip all their dogs and offer 6 weeks of free monitoring. Dogs especially can sometime go very quickly here, so check out their website to see who is available and then get down there FAST!

Yeah, the humane society is fantastic. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is that there are other non-kill agencies around, plus the fact that they are less apt to take special needs pets from the pound, and thus they are killed there. Still, I understand a need for both kinds of agencies. I myself have a special needs cat, and my life would not be complete without her, so there is room for alternatives.
