Review from Nate R.

I've been looking for a high quality framing store in SF for quite some time now. I've found plenty of mediocre stores but have finally found the only framing store I will use in the future unless I relocate. The owner is one of the most genuinely nice guys I have come across and will help you find the perfect frame without pressuring you to buy higher costing frames. The finished product was flawless.

I came here because of the yelp reviews and they did not disappoint. Dan is everything you could ever ask for and more: patient, hospitable, excellent eye, creative, and attentive to detail. Our first visit, 11 pieces that had been living in various boxes and tacky frames, was two hours and while I was exhausted at the end of it, he never even hinted that he was tired or that I was taking too long or even that he had anything else he could be doing (though clearly he did have other things he could be doing than holding my hand as I tried to make decisions). I know that good framing is expensive and this was no exception, but the outcomes were beautiful and I am thrilled. With anything I really valued, I wouldn't even consider going anywhere else.
I have added photos of several of my pieces. What you can't see is that they all arrived in a big jumble from the storage box I have been carting them around in. It is incredible to finally be able to enjoy and display these, after years of heaving them around. -

I've been back to see Dan several times since my first review, and each time he outdoes himself. It's also important to note that my usual routine now is to just tell him to do whatever he feels is right for the piece I bring him. One time he wasn't even around when I dropped off my art and I literally left a note telling him to surprise me, and the final result is what prompted me to write this update because it's amazing and perfect and I can't stop staring at it.
I think there are two types of people who will end up reading this review:
1. People who usually just buy those lovely, plain, cheap IKEA frames, which I'm totally not knocking because I have them too. I implore you: splurge on your favorite piece. Preservation benefits aside, sometimes there's more to life than a black frame and cream mat, and you'll be blown away when you see it.
2. People who are shopping around for the best framer. So I don't know anything about framing... the terminology, how to do it... nothing. What I do know is that Dan loves to do this, he's damn good at it, and he's been a great person to work with.
I can't say enough good things about Edgewise. I trust Dan and only Dan with my favorite pieces and I suggest you do the same, especially if you're looking to be taken out of your comfort zone.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from I Love S.
San Francisco, CA
I just wanted to say that I have joined the ranks of the Dan King/Edgewise Arts fans, and had a wonderful experience there getting artwork framed, and that I would recommend Dan and Edgewise to everyone!!
My project started with getting a page from a favorite childhood book enlarged about 4 to 5 times (from book to large poster size). Before enlarging, I first went to a different frame store, to get a reference point for sizes etc. The person at that store was polite, but generally disinterested and unenergetic, he said I had a choice between 2 frame sizes, that he would mat it, and then went back to his computer with a finality that told me that he was done.
In having the page enlarged, in order to keep its integrity, it turned out that I wasn't going to be able to meet the "standard sizes" that the other frame store had imposed. I was disappointed and unsure what to do, when my husband, ever logical and helpful =)) told me to just find someone who could customize the frame for me.
I looked on Yelp and came across great reviews for Dan and Edgewise. I called to confirm that he would do custom work, and then brought my poster in, bringing my sister (the creative one in the family) to help in the selection.
Dan was absolutely wonderful. Calm and methodical, he rolled out the poster onto a big table and started selecting frame samples from a large wall behind him. His patience and obvious willingness to put down as many frame samples as he thought would work, in a range of prices (no upselling going on at all as my sister pointed out to me later), constituted great customer service, he didn't hurry us at all, or seem worried about having to put everything back. In addition, his color and frame texture suggestions were really really nice, and my sister ended up falling in love with a green-silvery wood frame that looked really unique and enhanced the poster in a wonderful and subtle way. There again, once the choice had been narrowed down, Dan went to find larger samples to give more of an effect. I asked about matting, and Dan didn't hesitate, he said the poster was casual (i can't remember the exact expression) and that matting it would detract and make it too formal. He also made a great suggestion re cropping the poster, gave me the quote, said it would take 2 1/2 weeks and we were good to go!
My husband went and picked up the poster, and I've been smiling ear to ear ever since. It is absolutely beautiful, and the framing workmanship is excellent! Really really top notch, and I couldn't be happier. So thank you Dan and Edgewise, and to anyone looking to have something framed, you'll be in good hands if you go here!! -

Wow. That's all I can say. Dan is great and by the looks of it, he loves what he does. His choice of frames are exquisite. The amount of attention Dan gives you is unbelievable, he helps you throughout the whole process of picking a frame and makes your art look beautiful.
The frame selection in the store is amazing. They have original and quality made frames. The customized backings and overall quality prices and excellent customer service is a great thing to look forward to a small local business. Although it make take more time, and maybe a little pricier, the feel of craftsmanship with the frame is amazing.
Dan is a nice man to work with and produces a quality product. I wouldn't go anywhere else. -

I received a fairly unique gift from my eclectic Grandmother: a Kammavaca (a Burmese 'bible' in the form of 16 panels made of hand-painted wood or cloth). I don't collect art or antiques but I thought these panels were beautiful and they have sentimental value, so I wanted to showcase them properly, and Yelp brought me to Dan and Edgewise Arts.
From the beginning, Dan impressed me with his artistic insight, professionalism, and personal attention to my project. I didn't know where to start with this framing and he presented me with an approachable range of options, any of which would have been suitable for the piece, and we ultimately settled on a backing and frame that perfectly complemented the panels. He was patient throughout the process, gave me transparent and comprehensive information about the pricing of the various options he presented when requested and I never felt rushed or upsold.
Ultimately, the price he quoted was somewhat more expensive than I had anticipated (though to be fair I don't have any experience getting artwork framed so I don't have a good reference point) but the quality of the service and the final product far exceeded my hopes, so I would consider this an excellent value. It took just a little longer to get the piece done than originally quoted - maybe an extra 5 days for a 3 week quote - but it was a unique project with some tough problems (getting the panels attached to the backing without damaging them, extra large size of the frames) that likely took an additional day of labor than he anticipated (and he didn't charge for the extra time) so I could not complain.
If I ever have another piece of artwork that matters to me, I'm going right back to Edgewise Arts. -

Dan is a really great guy to work with, he's patient and has a good eye. The quality of his work is impeccable. The framing is not inexpensive, this isn't the guy to frame your bartending school 2-week certificate of completion. Edgewise is best suited for framing things that have to be absolutely perfect. Dan has stepped up for me multiple times! I'll definitely continue to send him my most treasured pieces for framing.

So I buy a painting at an art auction (a lovely resin piece by Rex Ray).
So I take it home only to discover that it doesn't have a hanging thingamabob affixed to its backside.
So I take it to Edgewise Arts.
So Dan looks at the painting, smiles, and says "no problem."
So Dan hammers on screws and a wire right then and there.
So Dan charges me $1 (yes, $1).
So I am in love. -
Review from That Was A Good Drum Break ..

Dan loves you. He loves your art. He'll make it look better than you deserve.
I brought a bunch of stuff in there. Rare stuff. Weird stuff. Not only did Dan seem really excited about it, but his assistant even brought up the artist's skate and graffiti zine from a couple years back - I knew I was in good hands.
You can do two things with Dan. You can hand him some artwork, walk away, then come back in a few weeks, and the end result will be amazing. Or you can spend as much time as it takes with him, his fifty thousand frame options, and eighty hundred mats, picking out something that moves you. He's in it for you and will take the time, but after dropping about a dozen prints off at Edgewise, trust me - his instinct is usually right on. If anything I usually went for a more understated look than Dan first proposed, but I am into really stark, austere, straight-ahead framing. I let Dan go with some stuff he chose, thinking it might have been a little much, but when they came back I was stunned. For serious.
Workmanship is outstanding. There's true care and attention to detail there - he even includes a list of all materials in an envelope on the back of the print. There's no secrets at Edgewise. Turnaround time has been great, too, so far all of my stuff has been done quicker than estimated. The pricing is good, on par or better than a lot of SF framers, and I'm ready to say Dan's work, skill, and eye is as good or better than anyone's. Plus, I'm kind of crappy, because I want to do everything right but I don't have a bottomless wallet. I'm only giving it 4 dollar-signs because ALL good framing, and even most shitty framing, is kinda expensive. Dan took the time to work with me on each print, balancing "affordable" with "awesome." I really feel like I got both.
Thinking about framing? Pull the trigger. Go to Edgewise. Do it. -

I'm a convert to the cult of Dan King. I don't which are better-- his magical skills picking out the perfect mat and frame, or his people skills. I just received a series of posters he framed for my husband and me. The prints are so damn beautiful now, it's difficult to believe. The workmanship on the mats and frames is, of course, perfect. And then there are the details. The gorgeous textured backing paper in bright colors that complement the frames, a sweet surprise. The little bumper things on the corners so that they don't scratch your walls, so thoughtful. The little envelope affixed to the backing paper with an Edgewise card explaining that my mats are acid free and the glass protects the posters from UV light, little love notes to my art.
The only negative is that you may have to wait, because Dan doesn't rush his customers. Actually, with all these glowing reviews, you may want to call ahead. -
Review from Gary C.

I figure I've had about a dozen...maybe a dozen and a half pieces framed with Dan at Edgewise. He's not the cheapest. He's not the fastest. He's simply the best. I feel anything I'm going to have hanging on the walls of my home should be shown at it's best.
I've had things done at cheaper and faster places (cough, Fastframe, cough) only to regret it. I learned long ago that a little patience and willingness to pay for quality will get you a product that will look good forever. Dan has taste, uses high quality products, is super friendly and I trust his sense for color and style. If you have something worth framing and you live in SF, there's really no reason to go anywhere else. -

I brought a beautiful Japanese woodblock print into Dan last week after reading the reviews on yelp and am SO glad I did.
He patiently took over an hour to help me and my mom pick out just the perfect frame. (we're both designers and can be overwhelming when together!) It was a rare print and needed the expert craftsmanship, archival quality material, and overall genuine care that Dan and his colleague give.
He was also able to get it done in just a week after learning that my mother would love to see the finished product before she left. We picked it up today and it looks stunning.
The prices are fair considering the precision of their workmanship. There are framers, and then there are framers. I am willing to spend the extra money for Edgewise.
Go to Aaron Brothers if you want a mass-produced frame for a mass-produced piece. Come here if you want something framed that can last to be handed down through your family. -

I can't say enough great things about Edgewise Arts. Dan knows frames like nobody's business. He picked out the perfect frame and mat for my art in minutes, and then patiently humored me as I asked him to try a million other options before deciding on his original selection.
I'd highly recommend going to Edgewise for framing and advice, no matter what your budget. If you can't find a framing solution that works for you at Edgewise, Dan will refer you to the right place. He's just that great! -

Dan King gives you his full attention and makes your art look beautiful. The frame selection in the store is unmatched in originality and quality, and so is the customer service.
I am an artist and some of the work I make is exceptionally difficult to frame because it needs to appear as if it is floating in the frame, and yet the paper is extremely fragile and hard to work with. Dan spent hours with me picking each color/design frame for each piece and mounted each one beautifully. When each frame is finished, it's almost as if you've now go a new, perfectly handcrafted piece of furniture. The frames are always backed with beautiful decorative paper and a little envelope with a card inside; something only you as the owner will see and yet it matters.
I love the contradictions in this place: such an old-world sensibility matched to a baggy-sweater backwards baseball cap character; such a quality place but yet an unbelievable value, and here it is on an unexpected side street, not Maiden Lane or some place like that.
And you always know when you hand your heirlooms over that they are much safer with him than they were in your house. (And this is coming from an artist.) -

Dan King is a professional who knows his craft and works diligently to get things perfect. He has a great eye for color and form. The process of picking out frames for Art can be daunting and even a little intimidating. When I walked into his place, I felt immediately at ease by his hospitality and inspired by his creativity. Dan has a fine arts degree and it shows in his skillful approach to matching the art with frame, the person and the space it is intended for. He takes the time to truly explore different options and I never felt pressured one way or the other. All in all I probably spent a good hour and a half in total deciding what I wanted.
Dan had recently finished 6 frames for me. Each one is flawless though one was not quite what I had expected. He called me about week prior to picking it up and told me the wood was a little darker than what I originally ordered because the manufacturer recently stopped production. He has offered to me to take home it as is and return it any time in the future if I choose to go with another frame with no questions asked, no cost to me. Dan's customer service and hospitality shines through, he even opened the store his day off to give me the frames.
Dan is great to work with and produces a quality product. I wouldn't go anywhere else. -

This ain't no Aaron Brothers. If you want something framed profesionally, creatively, and utterly uniquely, bring it to Edgewise.
Dan is friendly and thoughtful, and his selection of unique and unusual frames is really stunning. He has a great eye for color and is savvy about being on a budget - framing isn't cheap - he'll give you two or three options in a wide range of prices, which helps you feel like you can still get the look you want even if you can't quite spring for that $300 frame. (Be warned, pro framing services aren't cheap to begin with. If you *really* want to save money, you can do it yourself - but if you want the archival, gallery look, pro framers are where it's at.)
Dan doesn't do add-ons or try to talk you into expensive options. When he quotes you a price, it includes everything: the frame, the mat, the glass, and the labor. I really like that; it makes me feel like I'm not being oversold.
On top of all of this the framing work itself is top-notch. Your work doesn't just come back in a nice wood frame with some brown paper back - you'll get a stunning frame (good frames really are available in every price range), with your artwork lovingly mounted inside, and backed with beautiful art paper, including a tag from Dan's shop so you can remember where the work was done.
I would absolutely recommend this shop to anyone serious about framing beloved artwork of any kind. Dan is a real pro. -
Review from Gina C.
My fiance got two oil buddah prints from India - we decided to splurge and get some nice framing to make the prints pop.
Dan did a fantastic job - I don't think I would of gotten such a great frame for those pics if it wasn't for him. He definitely knows what he is doing, has a great sense of style, and is able to interpret what the customer wants. I would definitely go back to him again when I need exquisite framing to be done on a picture. -

3 great reasons to bring your business to Edgewise Arts:
1. The have an amazing selection of unique and beautiful frames.
2. Their work is top notch and the finished product will leave you happy.
3. Dan King, the owner is friendly, creative, knowledgeable and helpful.
I love Edgewise Arts. It is by far the best frame shop in the city. There is nothing like bringing in a picture or painting to frame and seeing the finished product. For me, it's like Christmas only better. -

Dan King is the go-to-guy for great framing and great customer service. Dan has framed everything from an African tribal belt, to antique Japanese photos (that we also purchased from him), a painting done by my grandmother (that actually looks better now that Dan has framed it with his expert touch), a giant mirror as well as my Ketubah.
My husband and I only trust Dan to handle all of our framing needs since his workmanship and attention to detail is incredible. -

We had a lovely French painting from our honeymoon, plus a rough-edged painting I bought years ago in Spain. Dan treated both with utmost respect and came up with simple, beautiful frames and now both paintings look amazing.
His execution is flawless, he's an extremely nice, patient guy, and he's a neighbor! Absolutely take anything you need framed to Dan and he won't let you down.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Custom framing isn't supposed to be a cheap option. You have to get over that before you even step foot in a custom frame shop, which is true of most things with the word "custom".
Dan is great and this is clearly what he loves to do. His frame selection should reveal something that makes your piece look great.
I've had 1 piece completed by Dan and it is perfect. I had another piece with me but I couldn't find the perfect frame so I took it home unframed. I came back a couple of weeks later with a totally different look in mind - Dan got it immediately and pulled a great frame from out of nowhere. I can't wait to get this one back and put it up! -

I had a great experience here. They have a super selection of frames and Dan is really knowledgeable about certain framing standards that work and why. I've developed a healthy respect for his combination of knowledge, artistic ability, and salesmanship -- and really, this isn't a backhanded compliment, I want this shop to stay in business.
I've been to a number of shops in the Bay Area, some ok, some horrible, so I'm happy to find someone that actually listens AND knows what they were talking about. -

My experience here just makes me want to comb through my sentimental madness of stacked photographs and prints to have them framed. Dan was more than helpful, willing to work with a small budget - but he had some gorgeous (who knew i would call frames gorgeous?) items way out of my price range if that is your fancy cup of tea. I left very happy with my friend's photograph, forever protected from the mean elements of this world with its UV filter glass! take that sun! take that dust!

I'm always impressed by how knowledgeable and helpful the staff is here. Seriously, they're great! And they don't make you feet stupid for not knowing everything about art. Dan King could not be more helpful, creative, kind and enthusiastic about his work. Although he suggested several framing options and never rushed my decision the first frame he selected was right on the money. And the outcome was just stunning. He has a calming aura around him that makes you feel like you've had a meditation session after you leave his shop. Top quality frames, exceptional service, meticulous attention to detail, Dan is a true artist. So grab all those pieces you've been wanting to frame and head down to Edgewise. You will not be sorry.

What a great experience I just had! Dan makes you feel as if his whole world has stopped and he is just there to focus on you and help you find the right frame & mat. It made the whole experience so fun and it was relieving to feel like I could take my time and find just the right match for my prints. He also made me feel very comfortable when I said I needed a cheaper frame for one of the prints. They have a big selection and even some great antique frames. Every mat they use is archival quality (acid-free) and all of their glass has UV filtering to keep your art looking spiffy for years!

Spectacular. Dan knows art and (more importantly) knows framing. I brought a Mongolian print to him, which he immediately recognized as being Mongolian, so I was sold on him from the get-go. He really took his time - all in all I had three pieces and it took us well over an hour. Regardless, Dan was very patient despite it being a busy (Satur)day. I'm very happy with his work, and while it wasn't cheap, it was worth every penny. Dan was extremely diligent - even the backside looked like a piece of art (including a hand-written note detailing all the materials used). Highly recommended.

Dan King for President. This guy is the epitome of kick ass small business owner. He is personable, knowledgeable, and very customer service oriented. He knows his medium upside down and backward. Working with a Burmese painting that had been transported via backpack back to the states over 2 years ago, he picked colors and materials that really brought the art to life. Couldn't say a bad thing about the experience.

Just got my picture back from my first visit to Edgewise. I'm thrilled. It's wonderful! Dan was very helpful and patient with picking the frame and mat, and the end result is nothing short of stellar. Takes a little while (mine was 3 weeks turnaround), and will certainly not be the cheapest job available, but the result is truly unique and will look great on my wall for a long, long time!

Love, love, love Dan!
I bought three antiquarian bird prints in London, and when I brought them to Dan, he was also interested in celebrating them in the most appropriate frames. Just as other people have said, he spends thoughtful, considerate, patient attention to both you and to what you're having framed. His service is impeccable. And the finished project is stunning. I'm planning to bring everything to him from now on! -

Glad to see you are still going strong Dan--congrats! So, fellow Yelpers, Dan will do a masterful job using the very best materials. when the color of the frame I ordered did not have the expected patina, Dan gave it a makeover and my piece is still stunning in it, a few years later. I also think looking back, I would have been wise to have trusted his creative spirit and gone for the riskier frame he presented as an option.

Dan King is an artist.
Brought it a wonderful old piece that needed redone and from the moment we walked into the stores we knew it was the right place.
He is creative, patient and a true artist and did a most wonderful frame and matting for the piece of art.
Price is reasonable for the artistry that he creates and the time frame as well - took a couple of weeks - and one mustn't rush art:)
If you have an art piece you really care about I recommend Dan's work wholeheartedly. -

Due to our initial dissatisfaction, Dan was extremely willing to re-frame my picture at no cost. He and my mom selected a much sleeker silver frame. The frame turned out to be on back-order, but I was willing to wait for something good. Yes - it took a while - BUT the picture looks MUCH MUCH better...no comparison! Though I am sure he was frustrated with my mom and I, Dan was always polite, professional, and responsive Thank you to Dan for re-doing the frame - he is the "real deal" businessman. To top it all off, I walked out with $20 cash because the new frame cost less.
