Review from Edward L.
Ebisu is one of those places that are for those who want to be "seen". The food is decent, but it is freaking overpriced.
Parking at this location can be a bit full, but the strip mall is quite huge. So you may have to work an extra few seconds.
The interior is your typical "upscale" type, with bamboo and wooden tables. Most of the tables are quite small, so I'd imagine you'd have trouble for groups larger than 8. There were a few TVs showing the Canucks, but the angles were awkward. You aren't here for the sports.
One thing that was really funny was that one of the staff punched in the wrong table number when placing the order for the party next to us. As a result, we got the wrong food 6 times. Interestingly enough, some of the food looked so good that we ended up ordering the same item too.
Rolls are expensive, at $9 or so for 8 pieces. The food is delicious for sure, but prepare to drop some serious coin. Most of us left hungry. But for sure it's a good place to show off to a potential date. -

This is a perfect example of a very average sushi place. The food is ok. It's not the best and definitely not the worst in Richmond. The atmosphere is really nice. I like the location, the interior, and the ambiance.
The service is very poor. You are greeted when you walk in. We were able to get our food order in pretty quickly. The service ended there. Unfortunately, this is another one of those places who forget about you intentionally until you come begging for the check. That always seems to irritate me. That is no way to run a restaurant. The prices are so so, not inexpensive, nothing to rush here for. Overall, it's not a place we will be coming back to.

Awesome quality, awesome price!
This restaurant was suggested to my sweetie and I by the front desk clerk at the Sandman Signature hotel in Richmond. With it being our last night in the Vancouver area and without a car, it was imperative for us to find a great sushi place within the area since we were told that Vancouver was known for good, fresh, and inexpensive sushi.
The cab ride was about $11 and upon entering the restaurant, there were only 3 other patrons there (mind you, it was 9pm, and the restaurant closed at 1045pm). The service was a little slow. We were given menus and had to call the server back to let them know we were ready to order. Once we ordered, the food came out in no time and the fish was as fresh as can be. The menu selection was huge and consisted of about 6 or 8 pages. There was so much I wanted to try but sadly my tummy could only hold so much food, not to mention the Sapporo beer and warm sake that my bf and I ingested.
If I find myself visiting the area again, I definitely will return here or to one of their sister restaurants downtown to fulfill my sushi craving. -

We had dinner here after we were delayed on one of BC Ferries boat.... Got in around 10pm. Ebisu was still open and they had half price oysters on the half shell!
Decor is wonderful. Service was better than average. Food was great compared to LA Japanese food.
I loved their thick, large pieces of sashimi. Their sushi rolls could have done better. Their udon was just okay, as were their salad w/miso dressing and chicken katsu.
$100 or so to feed 5 mouths. A pretty good deal for Japanese food I must say. -

Worse katsu don ever!
let me tell you about my experience.. i decided to get take out, so i ordered from the Ebisu website. i ordered 5 items from the website menu,(Katsu Don, Unagi Don, Spicy tuna cone, big crunch roll, yakisoba, chicken teri don.. this is not all for me btw..lol) and my server didn't even know what they were!!! seriousy when u hire someone, you should make sure they know the freakin menu before u put them on the floor or on the damn phone!! anyways back to what i was sayin...
i ordered the Unagi Don which is a bbq eel on rice. simple right? WRONG i had to explain it to her over and over.. and then when i recieved the order i got a bento box instead which wasn't that bad to be honest. .. The Katsu Don was wack and looked like crap! no flavor and it looked like they just plopped it on to the styrophome container. For prices that hi for sushi u should think that the food would be great. Its like they stopped trying... *sigh* Ive had better food at the Robson location!
My overall experience. it was ok... service needs a little work, food could be better, but if you want to go to Ebisu, hit up the Robson location instead.Listed in: Japanese Joints

Took acouple friends who were flying in on a stop-over to get some west coast sushi, and needed something close to the airport, so I came here on a Sunday for lunch. I have been to the other Ebisu's before, but never this location. I have to say the restaurant was comfortable, and the food and the service were ok.
We were lucky, as I never realized they had a lunch special menu consisting of $2.88 items. You have to order a minimum of 3 items per person, and the selection was good. From your agedashi tofu, to your scallop rolls, and udon, this would be considered cheap, and a better deal than going to another place for all you can eat.
We also ordered the mixed sashimi boat, and unfortunately the $2.88 items tasted better than the stuff on the boat. The bill came up to under $50 for 3 people, and we were stuffed, and had leftovers. Would probably come back here again, and try the other specials. -

This restaurant is newly revamped. New staff, New menu, and Renovated Restaurant.
Thumbs up! The food and experience is VASTLY improved from what it was before. I was very pleased with the menu selection and service.
Decent and worth going to for competant, quality sushi. -

3.5 stars!
Came here for the first time to rejoice the return of two repatriated Canadians.
Ordered the Tiger Mayo, Crunch 'n' Munch, Samurai Power roll, Mango and regular california rolls, sashimi, soft shell crab, deep fried cheese [forgot what it's called], and Hamachi Inferno.
The food came pretty quickly and all of it was pretty tasty. I especially enjoyed the Tiger Mayo and the wonton skin plate that it came on. The rolls for the most part were variations of a California roll. Sashimi tasted fresh and not fishy, no complaints there!
Service was polite and as I mentioned before we weren't left waiting for any straggling dishes. It took us a couple of tries to get tea and water, however, and it wasn't terribly crowded when we went; definitely not AWFUL service though. My friends and I agree that it is probably above average for an Asian restaurant.
Dinner for 6 came out to be about $135 after tax + tip, and we were stuffed.
I would come back...if just for the Tiger Mayo and wonton skins! -

I can't decide which was worse - the food or the service. Our family dinner here tonight was a gong show.
The resto looks nice, modern and sleek, and the menu looked decent with fairly good prices, but hooboy, something is definitely rotten in the state of Denmark.
After waiting 20 minutes in a half full restaurant, we finally hailed down a waitress to take our order. Another girl literally drops off a dish at our table with an incomprehensible blurt. When I hail her back to ask her what it is, she realizes that she gave us someone else's food.
I asked our waitress which she'd recommend: the soft shell crab or the app sashimi, she says definitely the crabs. They were the most brutalized, emaciated little clumps resembling deep fried tarantulas on top of UNWASHED wilted greens. But by that time, I'd already sent back my two pieces of a la cart Hamachi because they were ripped and mangled into separated strips that they clumped together and served anyway, WITH SCALES left on a part of them. When our food arrived, our waitress dumped it off and disappeared, without wasabi, ginger, shoyu platters or soy sauce, which we then had to hail down someone else for.
The pot of tea was designed to leak and looked like it was made by child labor in China, but it took us a while to hail down anyone to get extra napkins. No one asked how our meal was or cleared empty platters. I had better luck haling taxis in rush hour NYC than getting any of the waitresses' attention for anything.
Oh, and we had to leave several pieces of sashimi because they were still frozen solid in parts or waxy and chewy.
I haven't had food this bad since trying to order sushi in Detroit. Yeah, bad idea. So is this place.
One star for the 88-cent oysters which were decent and I've managed to hold down so far. -

I've been going to Ebisu on and off for the last few years. In fact, I was a regular customer back when it was still called Daimaru sushi and have consistently returned through their various renovations and name changes.
The new Ebisu has a sleeker interior. Gone are the cheap wood panels and the sushi bar. Now there is a sleek bar and more modern booths. Rather than being a run-of-the-mill sushi restaurant, it is clear that the Ebisu powers-that-be are trying to evoke a sleeker, more sophisticate ambiance. I appreciate the change and feel that the renovations make Ebisu a notch above the Japanese restaurants in the area.
The food is consistently ok. There are some hits and a few misses. My go-to dish is their oyster motoyaki. Rather than being served in an oyster shell, it is served in an oyster bowl, with sauce generously placed on top; this means that you get more oyster motoyaki at Ebisu compared to other restaurants. I do wonder why they no longer provide a bread roll with their oyster motoyaki. They used to do this, and it was useful for when I wanted to sop up the remaining sauce.
Another favorite dish are their mixed tempuras. They provide generous slabs of prawns and vegetables. The batter is light and crisp, and the oil they use to deep fry the suckers never feels old.
I am more ambivalent about their sashimi. Sometimes, their sashimi feels fresh. Other times, they feel rather old and taste as though they were just defrosted recently. I also noticed that the slices of sashimi I received this time around were significantly thinner compared to previous visits. Is this a result of downsizing or is this a mere oversight?
A big miss is their tokayaki balls, which were served practically drowning in sauce and with insufficient mayo.
As for the service, well, I concur with other yelpers. The service did seem like they were half asleep but they were generally polite. I had to flag them several times to get a water refill and had to remind them to give me the cheque.
Overall, go to Ebisu if you have time to wait for slow service. The quality of the food can be inconsistent but there are some dishes such as the oyster motoyaki which are pretty solid. -

Service is o.k. in the daytime, but later in the evening the service is a little slow. No wonder, it can get busy and you'll have to wait at the door for a table. No wonder it is busy, because the food is great. My favourite is the Chicken Karage, very tender and cooked to perfection.

Went there yesterday with a friend and I don't think I will go back. The food was okay but the service was bad. The waiter and waitresses seems like they are half asleep plus they really don't want to be there.
I will definitely tell people not to go there -

so the food and atmosphere was good. The prices for this place is not bad.. my friends and i had a dozen oysters for only 10$. I had the tuna salad and yakisoda (beef). The salad was not bad kinda felt like they ripped me off with the 3 pieces of tuna but w.e. The yakisoda was OK.. nothing really special. The only thing that made our experience terrible was the service. There was literally 3 tables (including us) in there. And it took forever for people to even give us water and the menu. We had this girl as our waitress and she seemed like she didn't understand anything we say to her. My friend was ordering drinks and she repeated the order 5 times to her and when our drinks came.. IT WAS WRONG.

I'm in Vancouver pretty often, the one thing I love most is to eat. I gathered a few friends chose Ebisu because Ninkazu wasn't available. We walked in, got our table and ordered. We ordered a pitcher of sangria. It was quite tasty, if I had ordered juice! OH! and it took almost 20 minutes to get it! food was extremely slow coming out. We ordered a dozen oysters and usually that's the first to come out, not in this case. We got it in the middle of our dinner. The only decent thing I think we had on the table was the garlic butter clams (but really how can you mess that up?) I had ordered 4 pieces of sockeyed salmon + tuna, which I never got. Told the waitress and she comes back to tell me that the sushi chef said we got it already. I was like ummm no we didn't. she went back and we could see the sushi chef roll his eyes. By then I was already pissed. Our table was getting full of the empty plates they weren't picking up and to get that kind of attitude? We had every plate that came out on the table and you want to tell me that we already got it?
I'm all about a good deal, but this was just not my cup of tea. The sashimi is cut SUPER thick. It's gross! Sushi was not ment to be cut so thick. For those saying it's a good deal it's a good deal, quantity over quality? Yea no thanks, I'll pay more for quality. I'll never go back to this restaurant. At least not the one in Richmond.
So overall experience was so-so. Food was edible, but not fantastic. Service was horrible and slow. -

This is the same restaurant chain as the Ebisu on Robson. This is a good restaurant to go to if you don't want to fight the crowd on the weekends. No need to make reservations and usually only a few tables are seated for weekend lunch. Lots of parking. This is not an authentic Japanese restaurant, food is alright for the price that you are paying. I would go not for the food, but go for the easy parking and no lineup/reservation convenience.
