    Wow, real, authentic Chinese food!

We hit East Ocean for a very late post-work dinner to satisfy a craving for crunchy jellyfish. In addition to the Jellyfish Platter, we ordered a Chicken & Beef Satay sizzling hot plate and a small Crab Meat & Fish Maw soup. (The menu was huuuge - over 150 items, it was hard to settle on just three.)

Even though we were the only people in the restaurant, the food came out incredibly fast - way faster than I was expecting - but very hot and fresh.

The fish maw soup had just the right flavour, texture and consistency. It'd been years since I last had fish maw soup but this was exactly what I was hoping for. I believe the crab meat was imitation crab meat (which wasn't explicitly stated on the menu,) but it really didn't take away from the soup in the slightest. The small was a really large portion - I can't imagine how big a large would be. If you're ordering other things, a small would probably be enough for three or four people to each have a couple of servings out of.

The jellyfish was great! Cut into long, thin strips and well marinated in sauce and chili oil it was just right - a little chewy, very crunchy and not at all rubbery with a hint of heat and a subtle flavour. The combined texture and flavour of this dish really come together to make it amazing.

The hot plate was also excellent. There was a very generous amount of meat with big chunks of onion & pepper & slices of carrot in an excellent satay sauce. Both the chicken and beef were very tender and everything was perfectly cooked.

The dishes were very generous in size and I didn't think we'd be able to eat all that food, but we just about managed. No left overs, and I'm kind of sad about that, but that just means I'll have to go back.

Really good, authentic food and late hours (open till 2:30am Mon - Fri) were an amazingly winning combination for the night. If I ever have a late night craving this beats the old standby of ordering pizza by a long shot. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.
