Great food with great company made my experience at East Is East enjoyable!

My friend and I dined in the far reaches of the venue where we were seated side-by-side on a sofa laden with pillows. The menu was a little overwhelming (which left us indecisive) since it was our first time at East Is East - everything looked delicious!

We both went with the Silk Route Feast - perhaps one of the best options on the menu if you're hungry! You get to select two main dishes (comes with rice, soup, roti, salad, etc.), but if you're still hungry, you can keep the main dishes coming (and you're not limited to your initial choices!).

Food was delicious. We shared the spinach paneer, chick peas, mango butternut squash, eastern ratatouille and the alu gobi (if I remember correctly). All of which were top notch and I'd highly recommend them.

We also noticed a lot of people ordering the famous chai tea so we decided to hop on the wagon and order ourselves a couple with soy and coconut milk respectively. I don't often drink chai but I thoroughly enjoyed it and also judging by how quickly my friend finished hers, so did she!

Pay East is East a visit and travel the Silk Route as we did. I can assure you that you'll have a memorable experience.

The live entertainment and ambiance was an excellent touch as was the generous hospitality of the staff.

    Best chai? Seriously?  Uh..

Having grown up drinking chai on a daily basis at home (I'm Indian), my family and I stopped by to try their ever-popular chai to see what the hype was about. The waitress brought over tiny samples as we were seated. Couldn't even finish the samples.

Next, all 5 of us ordered a different chai, and they all tasted awful. We felt bad leaving the table with 3-quarter-full cups, but it was impossible to finish all the drinks, even if simply for politeness.

Décor remind us of "Bedrock city meets cowboy country"?

First encountered this restaurant while walking down Broadway with my friends. The restaurant has a large open ordering window that allows you to order takeout right from the sidewalk.

The waitress inside smiled at us through the window and asked us if we would like to try some tea. She then gave us 6  sample size cups of tea (two different flavors) to share between four of us. They were both delicious and the gesture was very kind and appreciated.

About a week later went in to try the food. Had a chaat salad for the first time, a very good start. Then shared the beef kebab and chicken masala with a friend. Found both very delicious. Great flavors especially in the masala. The complimentary chai tea was possibly the best part.

Also really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and friendly servers. The only downside was the "kathmandu hash" smoothie which was good but to me tasted like my own smoothies made with save-on-foods berries and a couple scoops of breyers ice cream, nothing special. Still five stars for me based on the rest of the food, the friendliness of the staff, and the vibe.

Went here with husband and baby.  We had the Silk Route Feast it comes with rice pickeled vegetables , dal soup, roti bread and salad.  You start with 2 entrees each from a list of 13 items and then keep getting things as you choose.  Everything, except the salmon, was delicious. Our favorites were the peas and cheese, the chickpeas and the chicken masala. The staff was friendly and great with our 9 month old daughter.  They have a big selection of chai teas, lassis and smoothies too.

East is East has a fantastic atmosphere which makes you relax the moment you walk in the door. You are greeted by calm lighting, soft music, burning incense,  and low tables and benches with tons of throw pillows. The Chai tea, as many have stated, is very good. We were brought complimentary mini samples of the almond chai which of course made us all order full-sized versions. There is a great selection of Indian dishes, and many vegan options on the menu as well. I'm not sure I would call the cuisine traditional Indian, but it was yummy. I had the Alu Ghobi rice bowl with lentil brown rice. It was very good and warming on a cold day. They also have a very good vegan chocolate cherry pudding and many other desserts that sounded tempting. Prices aren't too steep.

5 stars for the Ambiance.  I wondered how long can this dream last?

Seated at the very end of the restaurant facing down a pathway of tables where at the end was a guy playing the sitar.

The exotic blends of spices filled the air with an aroma that brings you back to a place far far away.

The chai was powerful and heavenly yet brought you down to earth in a good way.  Like a beautiful woman who not only has beauty but strengh and intelligence.  This was what the chai was like?

So on a magic carpet ride the two of us were on an adventure and that was the ......$19.99 special where you can try all the good tidbits from meats to veggies in a variety of flavours and scents.  As much as you can eat as long as you eat what you already have.

I was stuffed, she was getting full, but not quite, sorta full, but yes, well,,, are we full?  Hmmmmmm.

We layed back on the cushions and gazed up at the ceiling.  Hmmm, I thought it was nice.

Maybe to her, it was just another dinner at East is East on the West.

To me it was like a dream on that magic carpet ride and Disney tunes were playing in my head, A whole New World.

What a great little restaurant.  Their Chai is to die for, lots of flavour in the menu and the live entertainment is great.

The environment is very cozy and unique with lots of wood chairs and tables making this a great place to go to relax.

The all you can eat option is very reasonably priced, so I always go for that option!

Fantastic, dreamy, serene...some of the words that describe my experience here.  From the moment you walk in, the staff makes you feel welcome.  The decor and music help put you in a relaxed and meditative state of mind.  When you are seated, they bring you water and a small sampling of their chai tea.  OMG the chai is so amazing, it gets your mouth watering for the incredible meal that is about to come.
I chose to have the vegetarian bombay masala roti roll.  It was served piping hot with a bowl of their lentil soup and salad.  A hearty meal, full of exotic spices.  This is a perfect meal for a cold or cloudy day.  Just thinking now about it, it cheers me up.  I also had the himalayan high shake which was a good balance to the spicy-ness of the food.  It might be a while before I am able to visit Vancouver again, but East is East is a definite stop on any visit!

It is a very nice place to eat upstairs. The decor, live music and ambiance is quite pleasant.

The service was very good, the servers were knowledgeable and friendly.

The food was good but not great. The salmon was a bit fishy, the bass was ok but the flavoring was a bit off. The Fresh fruit, home made vegan pudding and donut balls were top notch. Their desserts were great for a buffet place.

We originally chose East is East because of the Vegan and Gluten free options.  In the end there we were disappointed to find there was gluten free meals, Vegan Meals but no Vegan Gluten free meals.

The drinks were very tasty, The smoothies and sun and moon Chai was excellent. They make their chai in house from scratch.

Overall A good restaurant to eat at, fresh ingredients but maybe it was just that the upstairs buffet was a touch bland.... Mind you I don't eat very many vegan meals. I don't have much to compare it to.

I am giving the restaurant 3.5 stars for their overall performance. Don't judge on what I say entirely, try it yourself. Its a unique experience for sure!

It's kits so I'm not expecting south of main little india fare. having said that, the food didn't excite me even taking into account of that. It was standard curry and rice in a bowl, but a pretty bowl. Great decor and  they did a good job of hiring fashionable young women - but I have to say, there are about two things that waitresses should do bare minimum: refill water, bring food. Neither were accomplished properly.

I saw them see me drink from my cup, realise it was empty and put it down, nothing. No one came around, this wasn't a busy time, we were one of three or four tables that afternoon. There were at least four of them. Our service was essentially taking us to our table with water, taking our order, and bringing food (plop down, no eye contact, leave), that was it. We went up to get the bill. I don't care for banter, but I don't care for gross underservice. No one in the party was unpleasant.

Out of four simple orders, one was completely forgotten. Then, because no one came around to check, eventually I had to flag the girl down to tell her. This was at least half hour after the other dishes arrived. Which then precipitated that the food obviously takes about a second to prepare because she brought it out in 3 minutes (and it's not that they made it and let it sit there, the waitress admitted they completely forgot).

EiE, you guys have a niche being brown food in white town with a pretty setting, but this is ridiculous, what incompetent servers.

I find the prices for the food high for a place that does so much take-out. It's just strangely priced for what the restaurant is trying to be.

Are they take-out? Are they high-end dining? Are they... a milkshake hut? Why, TUNE IN NEXT TIME, when perhaps we'll have a clue!

It's almost like the dining version of Spin the Bottle. You never know what you'll get! Until you go to pay, then it sorta rules out anything "hut"-like.

That said? It's good food -- but, yeah, overpriced. I'm talking about market-based prices, considering the locations. They're off the mark, both ways.

And, you know, since we're charging so darned much, can I just take a moment to bitch about the one thing that drives me INSANE about this place?

    Here's the deal.

    The milkshakes and smoothies?

    Unreal. UN-RE-AL. (For real!)

The Turkish Delight? Oh, on my magic carpet to my happy place. La-la-la. Mm.

Cardamom in a milkshake? SHUT UP and HIT ME TWICE.

    But.

Despite the insane awesomeness, the ever-present queue to score one of these tasty thangs, you know what defies the laws of stupidity?

    They have one blender.

    ONE BLENDER.

Know how long it takes to make a milkshake? Too long. I routinely wait up to 20 minutes for one milkshake. Which is to say I suffer this twice a year.

Buy another goddamned blender. Please. It's called "production", which you need to maximize to make profit. There's a free business lesson for ya, bubs.

Tastes great, but overpriced and inefficient.

So many others offer more complete packages. But, sigh... that milkshake in an August heatwave after cycling for an hour? I shudder at the thought. (And cringe at waiting for 20 minutes in that heat.)

Silk Route Feast is a delight - keep in mind no sharing of the feast, so they will make you order 4 feasts if your table has 4 ppl. At $16.95 per person it is not cheap but considering all the food you can keep ordering - it is worth it for the big eater like myself (ok only occasionally). Their dessert with three scoops of vanilla ice cream with gulab? (rice cake textured warm sweet thing) on top of cured rice pudding (sounds scary but it's good) was delicious. Emmmm~~~ i would come back for dinner when they have gypsy flamingo dancers!!!

Nov 6- Just back from lunch/dinner here after a day of testing our relationship by going to Metrotown. We made it out of Metrotown alive but rather hungry so I suggested East is East for the tasting menu feast...Silk Road something or other. Oh my belly (and mind) is soooo warm and happy now it's ridiculous. The food was great, tasty, comforting, just-right spiced and enough of it to sink a ship. I am fully and completely satisfied, with a refill of chai to go as well. Happy!

A few weeks back: My Guy and I were out window shopping last weekend and stopped in to grab a roti roll to go. He'd been to East is East before and raved about it, personally I've never had a meal there...this take out was to be my first foray into their divine temptations. I wasn't disappointed. Well to be honest I was because I WANTED MORE. We split a Yogi's Treat roll; tender chickpeas in a smooth tomato cream massala...wow...the soup was amazing- but not quite hot enough. This was nowhere near enough for 2 people; it was just a quick snack for us but it made me want to come back- AND SOON. I'm a Vegetarian so finding places that are more than Veg-Friendly are a HUGE bonus.

I love the food here, but wow...the service is SLOW.  It always has, been, at both of their locations.  This is not the place to go when you are in a hurry.

That being said, you can 'feast" like a king for the feast for two - it's almost all you can eat!  Best price in town.

But you know what I stop by regularly for?  The Himalayan High milkshake done with soy milk and frozen yogurt.  HEAVEN.  Try it, you won't be disappointed.  It's a monthly treat for me, even when it's raining and awful out.

    Great Afghan food!!! =)

Didn't know of this place but a friend brought me there. But it was a good restaurant!!!! Came during a summer evening and they have a live band playing Afghan music. Very intriguing!!!!

The food here is standard Indian/Middle East food and it is pretty good. Just that the pricing is a little high in my opinion. Ordered their platter and it was VERY fulfilling (yes, they also have refills).

I was pretty satisfied after the dinner and would like to visit again in the future.

The soup they serve with their meals is possibly the best soup I have ever eaten. I tried to replicate it at home and no dice. Actually, I've also tried to replicate their eggplant dish at home, and that didn't work either. East is East has some carefully guarded secrets that make their dishes absolutely incredible.

Good thing I don't mind coming back again and again. I've never been disappointed with my food. Everything is delicately and carefully prepared; the quality is consistent, as are the flavours. Presentation is good. Service is attentive and pleasant. Live music is always wonderful.

I have no complaints, not one, about East is East - and I am a notoriously critical person. Oh, yeah - best chai in Vancouver. It's spicy and complex and wonderful, and they always have both dairy and non-dairy.

I had heard many great things about East Is East before but I had never actually ventured out to try it. The food is a fusion of Indian and Afghani cuisine. The restaurant's vibe is very laid back and the decor very unique (with low wooden tables, banquets, and tapestries on the walls). We ordered the "Feast" for two - a combination of salad, appetizer, and two main dishes. The "Feast" is refillable as many times as you want and at a price of $19 per person it is very reasonable. My favourites were the Lamb Kebab and the Alu Gobi. The Himalayan High milkshake was excellent too - a mixture of mango, pistachio, rosewater and cardamom! Yum!

Once we were done with our individual platters we decided to give desert a try. We ended up ordering the Easter Ecstasy - very tasty!

To add to an already great dinner we were also entertained by a belly dancer performer!

Overall, I would recommend giving East Is East a try as there is nothing else like it in Vancouver... You will feel like you have gone on an exotic holiday :)

Love the cute 'takeout' window here.

On a hot summer day, we decided to stop here for some of their smoothies/shakes.

Their Eastern Shakes can be made with ice cream and organic 1% milk, or frozen yogurt and soymilk. I had their Himalayan High, with mango, pistachio, rosewater, and cardamom, with yogurt.  My friend got their Rangoon Rain yogurt lassie, with peach, lychee, pineapple, banana, and coconut.

They make everything fresh so there was a bit of a wait while they prepared it.

My shake was absolutely awesome!!! Hints of mango flavour, and bits of pistachio, all blended smoothly with the rosewater and cardamom. Such a refreshing drink!! Had a sip of my friend's drink, it was also very fresh, and the coconut flavour made the drink that much more tasty!

For a quick treat, and if you want something different than the standard places, come here for their smoothies/ lassies/ shakes! You won't regret it!!

    2 words: FREE REFILLS!!

Get the $20 feast, which includes rice, salad, dahl soup, roti, and choice of 2 entrees. After you've stuffed your face, get everything refilled, for FREE! The coolest thing is that you can change your choice of entrees when you get the refills. WOW! So first time I had the lamb (eh, kinda dry) and salmon (sooo good). Then I had the chicken (tender heaven!) and alu gobi (off the heezy!). Damn, I'm happy happy.

I'm in love! East is East is everything you can ask for in a restaurant: delicious food, great service, wicked decor, awesome atmosphere. The servers are so nice, in an outta-this-world- zen-like-state from too much yoga and good eats. We packed up the refills to go, not knowing that wasn't allowed, but the manager let us do it anyway because we didn't know. Awesome!

You gotta go. Bring a date, snuggle up on the cushions, get cozy in the candlelight. I'd def come back again and again. This place would rock for big groups as well, since they have live music and dancing on weekends.

I've been here twice. First time I just picked up a smoothie. It was super delicious! Ice cream with frozen yoghurt or organic milk or something, pistachios, rosewater and cardamom. The idea of it sounds wonderful, and it was quite good but the flavour of cardamom wasn't noticeable at all. The pistachios added a nice texture, and the rosewater added a nice flavour to the frozen smoothie drink. A bit thick and hard to get through the straw but quite delicious all the same. I'm going to guess it's because I asked for a mix of stuff instead of the "milk & ice cream" or "frozen yoghurt & soy milk" options (because I don't like soy milk but wanted frozen yoghurt).

I like how they sample their chai. It's pretty good. A tad on the spicy side because they use (lots of) real ginger root.

I went with a friend and we got the feast. Tax and tip brought it to $20 which is $10 per person. We ate yummy food for $10 per person in a sit down resto and got to sample some chai. Totally good for the money! If you get that same feast meal and eat it by yourself, they'll give you free refills! That's awesome!

One of the only things keeping this from a 5 is the service. It wasn't very attentive, and though some people working are really friendly, we felt kind of ignored. We had to ask for more water and that was after a while of waiting for the server to even show up.

If you're looking for tasty budget eats with a friend, this is a good spot for lunch! Being close to UBC this would be an ideal spot to go if you're on a student budget.

I love the interior decor in this place, very exotic. Even the way they serve their food (a big tray with all small dishes) gives a special touch.

Overall food is decent, with a interesting variety. My favorite /thing that impresses me the most tho, is the chai tea. They have many different chai tea, black/green/roobio/soy, etc. I just love the original black chai. Not too sweet but with lots of spices, uum!

Definitely worth trying this place out at least once.

great atmosphere and food but why no alcohol?

Some how i was never aware that it is a dry restaurant and has no booze.  Not the end of the world, but I like to have a beer with dinner.

that being said, the food was awesome and so was the interior design .  Not to mention the band that plays during dinner.  Very fun!

The staff was young and a little spacey but overall no complaints.

The feast is the main thing to get here, never ending food and all of it was really tasty and fun.  Lamb and Chicken Masala were my highlights.

One of my favorite restaurants in Vancouver, since arriving just a little over a year ago. A very reliable place to take visitors, go for a date night or even take-out.

The food is unbelievable, I love the shakes/smoothies and the Chai is very warming, especially during the winter nights. There are lots of vegan and gluten free options. Servers are knowledgeable and very good and I love the "feast" concept, where you can refill all the sides and 2 entrees. It allows you to try as much of the menu as you can in one night.

The only reason I give this place 4-stars is because they do not serve alcohol and are unwilling to allow BYOB. Obviously, it's meant to be a very "organic" and "healthy" place to eat, but a little wine never hurt anyone. I called one day to see if they do BYOB and I think it completely threw them off.

The live entertainment is a plus.

We got some wraps from here for breakfast a few weeks ago.

They were pretty good but really expensive at about $10 each.

This included a salad and a watered down soup.

I think it would make sense if we sat down to eat them but for takeout this is just not worth it.

I've also had AYCE dinner here which was also pretty decent.

It's not cheap eating here; not to say that it is expensive... but it isn't cheap.

Wow East is East.... were u a surprise or what.

i have passed by the main street East is east a couple of times
and i thought... hmm maybe another indian wannabe ethnic inspired hippy place, i'll try it one day.

But boy, was the first impression wong or what!
After a disappointing experience in nearby Dharma's kitchen
we went to this kitsilano gem to satisfy our apetite and whoa was it an experience? one of the best indoor decors and environment, free exotic chai samples, amazing smell of spices, live music, beautiful crowd, this was India's representation at its finest.
    The food was lip smacking.
The aloo gobhi plate, the Gandhis breakfast roll, they bombay masala
damn i wishe i can eat one of everything on the menu.
its Vegetarian friendly as the choices are great.
The daal lentil soup is one of the best i have had outside india.

Damn... whoever made East is East... is representing India just in the right manner. If you havent tried it........ Get your butt off and go smother yourself with everything that is good about India :)

This is one of those things which would make an Indian feel Wow, I wish all of India was like this too. Or in other words.. best of India

When I used to live in Kits, East Is East provided me delicious 'Chai Power' on those damp cold days. It is very different from what is found at chain coffee houses so that must mean it is actually authentic. The food I have tried at East Is East has always been very tasty and satisfying. I love their soups because they warm your heart and soul with cumin and curry!

The decor is really funky and charming and takes you out of the real world and into a more exotic, spicy one! I love how you can sit on cushions too! They always play music that makes me want to break out my belly dancing moves...but I refrain and leave that to the pros!

East Is East has been one of my favorite dining experiences while living here in Vancouver.

The dining room transports you to another world. I've actually never seen a place quite like it.

The food was spot on delicious. I ordered the Aloo Gobi and the Butter Squash, which came with sides of rice, lentil soup, and salad.

I thought the Aloo Gobi was fantastic. The spices gave the dish depth and flavor. I didn't care too much for the butter squash because it tasted a little too pineapple-y for my taste.

But by far, my favorite dish was the lentil soup. I could eat a bowlful of that stuff on a chilly Vancouver day.

I've also had the Karma Sutra (a chai shake), which was the most amazing drink I've had in a long time. The chai teas were actually very spicy, so if you enjoy super spicy things, then the chai tea will be right up your alley.

Fantastic good, great service,  but the price hike in 2010 made this less of a regular spot to eat.

The selection of chais that you can get to go are great, and I love the new almond milk option, HOWEVER, their cups leak, 9 out of 10, and have leaked like this for years.  I know they are eco cups and all that, but they are non-functioning.  It defeats the purpose of an eco cup if you have to take a stack of napkins to try and block the leak.

    Verdict: bring your own mug.

This place is amazing. I love chai and this place makes addicting chai. It is spicy and instantly makes you feel better. Its a nice quick place to grab a drink and roti roll at the take out window or sit in and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.
I think that they are a little overpriced on the food side, but stop by for a chai to say the least. They also make other smoothie natural type drinks. Yum!

Forget ViJ's, forget every other place that claims to serve Pakistan or Indian food, nothing beats East is East. I have tried this place over and over, with people who will complain about food sent down from heavens, this place has never let me down. I officially call East is East the best Indian food in Vancouver.

I love the atmosphere in this place. It is unlike anything else I've seen in a long time. The lamb we had was amazing, soft, and yummy.

My boyfriend and I went there like 3 months ago.

I ordered a dish that it was all you can eat (eastern plate) and my boyfriend ordered the eastern roti roll.

The waitress was a bit rude when i ordered again another portion of the EASTERN PLATE.
She was like, wow! you want everything again?
My response to that was: It is all you can eat right?
She was a bit of a bitch and made me feel like a fat person ( I am so not. I am 50 kilo)

food very tasty, but service is SHIT!

Love the food at East is East. If you like Indian, then you'll love this. Although it is a kind of Indian/Afghan/MidEast fusion, really, it's more like Indian than anything else. And who knew, but they refill your plate as much as you want! My wife could only manage one plate, but I had two. We shared the divine dessert, Eastern Ecstasy, and were stuffed to the gills.

Dessert might sound weird, but it is spectacular. Rice pudding, gulab jaman, ice cream, pistachio, cardamom and rosewater. Like nothing you will eat at Earls!

Service is charming and wonderful. Lovely young ladies who are so friendly and seem really passionate about the place. My only issue is that although the seating looks really cool, it's damn uncomfortable on those solid wood benches. Fix that and you have dining nirvana.

This place is awesome!  I love Middle Eastern food and this was the perfect place for me...the laksa was good and plates have a variety of different meats and vegies with all these spices and cooking methods it's a great place to order and share!
The staff were friendly, the decor and teh ambiance totally fit what they serve.
I didn't try their chai but I can't wait for it on my next visit.

Love this restaurant as well as it's Main St location. (Read my review of the Main St. location, for details.)  ;)

I am just not a huge fan of the sickly sweet concoctions that most coffee places serve up under the unintentionally laughable title "chai tea". Seriously, do you think anything approaching a chai tea late has ever been served in India... I think not. Personally I prefer to satisfy my cravings for the spicy goodness of chai at East is East (or in the privacy of my own home... but that is another point entirely). Their chai is by far the best I have had at a restaurant and it warms you from tips to toes on a rainy Vancouver afternoon.

As for the food, everything is pretty yummy and served in nice large servings that will leave you satisfied. My favorite is the chicken which is always well cooked and I dig the dhal. It isn't my favorite Indian food in Vancouver but it hits the spot and does so in an adorable package. I can't help but like the decor of this petite little restaurant. Even the wood stump chairs out front are endearing! There is something homey and welcoming about this place and, for what it's worth, I wholeheartedly encourage you to step up to the take-away window or head inside... grab a cup of Chai... and enjoy!
