Review from Laureen H.
Burnaby, BC
Over the past year, I've gone from my regular visits to Cactus Club to Earl's. Especially over the past few months, I've been to Earl's about 5 - 7 times. A few of those times, I've taken my 6 months old daughter. The staff there is very accommodating. My last visit to Earl's was just a few nights ago. Here was my experience there...
I arrived there with my daughter in tow, in her baby car seat. The girl at the door had the door open for me and was very helpful in helping me locate my good friend who had arrived about 5 minutes before us. When I found her sitting at a small table, the hostess moved us immediately to a bigger table and I was able to fit my baby seat next to me.
Our server, Drew (I believe was his name) was wonderful. He was very attentive. Our food was great and timely. We were both very hungry and made a few requests regarding our menu choices. The staff is wonderful. I could not make any complaints about the food or the staff. Drew, if you ever read this, you are doing a great job.
While many may think that bringing an infant to such a place isn't a good place but it was no problem. Even with all the chatter, my baby slept for about 45 minutes. The only thing that I'd say that was bad about Earl's was how loud it is in there but that is part of the ambiance.
That particular visit with my friend lasted almost 4 hours. We never felt rushed or that we had to leave. Would I consider this my casual dining restaurant from now on? Yes! -

I worked there for a bit, so I just wan't to warn you remind you that all chain restaurants go through a high high high high high turnover, and to make it worse they (BC Govt) introduced the $7.00 training wage for new workers with fewer than a certain amount of hours work experience. Not to mention demoralizing them with split shifts (work 2 hours, get sent home, and come back to work 3-6 more 2 hours later). And low pay. They won't give you a raise if you don't say anything...even then they mostly wont!
That being said, just think about who's making your food. Usually an unhappy-about-my-pay-and-hours- bunch. You don't need any food safe training. Actually, bacteria, food temps, proper food handling, aren't exactly high on the list. Once your trained up, it's all about speed and making it look perfect. No problem there, but when you have children in the kitchen (yes children 15-19) with no idea about food safety things can get gross. I won't even get into detail. Just think of your own 16-19 year old son handling all this raw food for the first time with no idea about how dangerous it is.
When it's busy you can't keep constantly reminding these kids to sanitize their hands after touching raw meat and fish before piecing together your salad or any other fresh food item.
If you get a good group of guys who are mature and get along for a few months it's better, but most the time you get the inexperienced making your $20 meal.
When I eat at ANY of these places (so I'm not just picking on you Earl's) I get something that's been deep fried. Those items are low risk (in and out of the fryer).
Yours Truly,

Seriously, this is the default place for an after work event that involves booze or food. We don't ever go anywhere else. I guess that's alright, since this place is fairly consistent. They seem to see the work crowds come in on a regular basis, but sometimes they can't handle the groups very well - forgetting orders or bring stuff to the wrong people.
The appies are always good (my favourite being the dry ribs, with the spicy chicken coming in second), and the mains are pretty decent. They've got a good variety of drinks, but I'm not a huge fan of their Albino Rhino beer. Staff is pleasant, but they seem kinda stressed out a lot of the time.
Overall it's an alright spot, but I suspect it's simply due to lack of options. Hopefully the staff will step up their game, I knocked a star off for consistently lacking service. Sorry ladies! -

$10 for a salad that doesn't have cheese seems like a little excessive.
I guess part of that goes toward the poor host girl's salary who's only job it seems is to open the door for people who come in and say hello. -

I'm a big fan of the chill chicken at earls, but for some reason that and drinks is something this earls has never managed to get right for me.
I also HATE the wait here, for service, for food, for the bill. -

This place is laid back and private considering it's smack in the middle of Burna-megalaaapolis. It's on Kingsway between Willingdon and Wilson, next to the Old Orchard Shopping Centre. In other words, it's straight across from Metrotown Mall. Yes, parking can be bad; so take your chances at Old Orchard, or if you're an ex-local like me, park on the streets (I like my Sussex St. parking, by the Bureau de Postale--i.e. Post Office, for the anglo-files).
When I'm in town, it is where cousins and family want to gather. If you're by yourself, it is also great--full bar, good martinis, good US or Canadian beer, red/white wine selection and a very Canadian (polite) group of serveure/serveuses.
I chose theprawn and scallop Linguini. This was served with citrus white wine cream sauce, scallops and prawns of course; some petites tomatoes, basil, arugula, toasted nuts with a good portion of grated parmesan. Il dit "mangez-moi". I had the Australian shiraz and il dit "buvez-moi".
Le restaurant sert également des hamburgers, des pizzas, des salades et des potages.
La nourriture était délicieuse, le vin était bon, les serveurs étaient polis, et j'étais maison encore. La vie est bonne. -

I lived in the Hilton for seven months while working up here and Earl's was a short walk from my hotel and I can not count the number of times that I ate at Earl's. I got to try many different things on the menu and never had anything that i did not like and I miss Earl's and the friends that I made up there.

Much like the Cactus Club down the street, I find this location better than others. I'm usually not a fan of places like Cactus Club and Earl's because I get bored with the menus and find the dress of the staff to be inappropriate (If I wanted to see up skirts with my meal I would go to the Penthouse). So, on an evening out with some out of town friends, we discovered our first choice was full (not making a reservation on a Friday night, even at 9 pm in Burnaby, was a mistake)... so we called Earl's (using my Yelp app) to see if they could seat 6 of us in 10 minutes, and they said "No problem. Inside or patio?" Patio, please!
Our waitress was very nice and attentive, and despite a couple silly things, was overall good. And not that inappropriately dressed. She even brought my friend a free piece of cheese cake for her birthday after I inquired about whether they would do that or not. She was new and wasn't sure, but said she would check and what dessert would my friend prefer? Sure enough, a piece of cheesecake was brought out with the two sticky toffee puddings a couple of us had also ordered.
The food was good and the sticky toffee pudding was fantastic. The martini special came in handy, and we indulged in many. The muddled raspberry one is really yummy.
I've had a few meals at this location and it's pretty good. It does in a pinch, and is consistent. -

I came back yesterday for a friend's birthday dinner, and I have to drop this one star due to the lack of service. For a restaurant that was barely full, by looking over the horizon, probably about 7 tables at the most, and even for us, we only had 10 people, it felt like sometimes they just did not want to tend to our table.
Another point that I must make is that the server of our table did not know how to split the bill, as she said it was too difficult. Even if the restaurant was super busy, this request is constantly made at restaurants, and also parties of this size.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I haven't been to Earl's for quite a while, and now it seems like they're now trying to compete with the Cactus Club for the prestigious 'skankiest waitress' award. To qualify for this award all wait staff must be female, with skirts no longer than thigh length, and at least five rows of ribs must be visible at all times through an oh-so-classy mesh shirt.
Dress code aside, the waitresses were very eager to provide service. No less than three of them came to our table to offer to take our order. We even saw two of them have words with each other about the territory dispute, but unfortunately we didn't get the show with dinner that we were hoping for.
The service was relatively quick, around 15 or 20 minutes from the time we ordered to get to our table. The boyfriend got a steak and it seemed like he was in a little private heaven with each bite; although I must also note that he was steak-starved until then. I got the linguine, which was good but would have been better with about a litre or two less vinegar.
Halfway through the meal, the hockey game came blaring on over the speakers, which we were both fine with. However I can see some patrons being annoyed at suddenly being transported into a sports bar when they thought they were in a fairly nice chain restaurant.
Sigh. I suppose my love-hate relationship with this place will continue. -
Review from Jules F.
As a kid growing up in the Vancouver area, Earl's had always been a fairly reliable restaurant where one could take a family and enjoy a reasonably elegant dinner for a good price. Wow, times have changed. They seem to have done away completely with providing a family-friendly environment and instead have focused entirely on being hip to the point of obnoxiousness.
We came to this particular Earl's on Kingsway with my wife and a few old friends, and it was one of the worst dining experiences of my life. I can't remember anything about the food, because the memory was completely wiped out by the spectacle of watching our waiter perform crotch shots on a group of loud drunk women a couple of tables over. This same waiter ended up being too busy "servicing" the other party to bring us paper napkins for our dessert. My wife, who at all other times is a perfectly reasonably woman, was so incensed by this she demanded to see the manager on the spot. The manager didn't think it was inappropriate for a waiter to be grabbing shot glasses with his teeth from between the legs of women in full view of the kids in the place and told us as such.
Since then we've refused to set foot in any Earl's. I'm quite we're not missing much. -

Been here a few times.
This won't be my most helpful review, but my standard - pan bread, seared beef and broccolini and the sticky toffee cake.... so yum!
This is definitely one of those places I will go to again and again... :) -

Thanksgiving Dinner at Earls:
Whenever I don't feel like have a full dinner or not that hungry, I always like come here for the Clam Chowder and garlic bread (garlic toast but they it garlic bread) or a light snack like a Hamburger or Dry garlic sparerib. The waitress told me tomorrow Thanksgiving Day they will serve Turkey Dinner for $20. Per person, she told me it the first time Earls serve Turkey Dinner for Thanksgiving Day. I told her it's a good idea; instead of cooking at home I will come here for dinner. I was pleasingly surprised that the Turkey Dinner was so good; I must express my satisfaction here in the review. Good presentation; Good portion of Turkey; green bean with bacon; mashed potato and cranberry sauce; and a bowl of tasty bean soup before they serve you dinner. I always consider Earls serve good Hamburg, fish and chips; certain type of steak, now they also served very good turkey dinner. I hope they continue the tradition next year. It's a good beginning for them. As usually, service is always excellent here.
They start serving Thanksgiving Dinner on SUNDAY (Nov.10/10) to MONDAY (Nov.11/10)1 Previous Review: Show all »

although earls is never my first choice for a meal...i will always agree to go since this particular place holds a special spot for me and a friend.
we both lived literally 2 steps away from here and found ourselves here fairly often. the food is not stellar... but today, i had the west coast prawn salad and it was perfect. the dressing was light..the prawns were soft and cooked right... the avocado was fresh...the strawberries were sweet... i luv quinoa and candied pecans ... everything i liked was in this salad!!
the ceasar i ordered was rather bland...so i asked the waitress to 'fix' it... and it came back exactly the way i liked it. =)
my friend and i shared the gingerbread cake dessert (the 2nd time ive had it this season).... it is so warm, and yummy and sweet and soft.. mmmm.......
i cant say the service here is spectacular....but i have been served by some excellent people in the past.Listed in: Keepin' it WestCoast~~

Slow.. slow... slow.... slow... service. The restaurant was only 10 percent occupied yet it took almost 2 hours for a chicken burger to arrive to my table. What's even more sad is the fact that the sandwich was made out of sliced Wonder bread. You're paying The Keg prices on food that looks like it was made by grade 8 Home Economics cooking class students. Anyone who is saying this place is decent spends way too much time eating cafeteria food. I've heard better stuff about Earl's elsewhere which makes me believe that this location is the very worst!
