Do you like denim trivia? No?
Well...you kind of screwed up where I was going here.
Only the best very-expensive jeans. I also like how it's all just in piles, because you know what's up in this place: denim. Denim is up in this place. And I know some stuff about the pants I'm wearing, which is actually sort of comforting in a weird way.
Okay, no it isn't. I'll admit it. But the employees at Dutil never will, and I respect that. -

Apparently all the amazing helpful service people had the day off. I need jeans. I heard they had them here. Indeed, it was true. The jeans were in piles. I looked at them. There was one other customer (and their entourage) buying a pair of jeans in the store, apparently a very complicated and drawn out transaction that required both staff (or whatever, I was just trying to find a pair I wanted at a price I was willing to pay among the all the blue washes and cuts).
Finally the other customer left (along with their retinue that included a screaming child, sweet Jeebus, what lungs). In the meantime, I had found a pair of jeans looked like they'd be what I was specifically looking for - straight leg, indigo, a little sumpin sumpin on the back pockets. Also a brand I'd had a pair of for years and quite liked. They were sized for a giraffe's legs and I wanted to ask if hemming was available. But I was also pretty pissed off that I had been in the store this long with barely an acknowledgement, and I seriously questioned why I would want to give these people my money now.
Oh, look, they noticed me. I am examining a particular pair! Could I be trying to find my size? "Do you have any questions?" he asked. (Why yes I do ... am I a mirage, or do you want to make a quick $200+ in your last 10 minutes of openage today?) "Do you offer any hemming service or do these come in different lengths?" No they don't offer alteration, and am informed that preeemium denim is often made only in one length because it's easier to have them shortened then lengthened. I am fascinated by this fact of denim AND physics. I am unimpressed that they don't offer some kind of alterations service in the equation, given jeans of one length plus big bucks ($100-400 a pair) multiplied by customers of many sizes equals go do it yourself. As a non-tall person, I'm aware that I could buy the jeans and take them to an alterationist, but ... I am now not in the mood to pay preeemium prices and then have the additional errand to run.
So at that moment, despite the cute jeans I'd like to try on, I elect not to keep the staff from the rest of their Sunday plans. Mine immediately included a good long walk to channel my rage. -

Now that a pair of cool jeans can set you back several hundred dollars, it's become way more important to make sure you're buying something that's perfect. Such pressure!
The people at Dutil make it a easy and a pleasure. Staffers are quick to greet you, hear what you're after and explain how the store is laid out. The girl who helped me functioned as a sort of jeans concierge, making impartial recommendations, narrowing down the options, pulling my size and getting me set up with a change room. Sometimes that level of service can feel a little too attentive, but at Dutil it's done with zero pressure and zero attitude.
The Japanese raw denim pair that I ended up buying were far from the most expensive available (Naked and Famous, a Canadian brand), but we both agreed that they were the best fit. Again, no pressure, just friendly service. What a concept!
A great shop that deserves it's high rating. Recommend!
EDIT: Their Toronto location has the exact same great attitude. Clearly, friendly and relaxed customer service is part of this company's culture. Keep it up! -

This one is going to be long. To sum it up: This place is great. The staff are amazing and you will leave with a pair of perfect fitting jeans in hand.
Having worked in fashion for a few years a while back, I can't help but be overly aware of the sales people working in a retail store now. If they are fake, or pushy, or start fighting over my sale with one of the the other staff members, or tell me something looks great on me when CLEARLY it does not, or have a high and mighty attitude, or give off the impression they hate their job, or..... I could go on, but I think you get the point..... All these qualities will RUIN a store for me. If I really cant stand the staff but love the clothes, I am forced into the inconvenience of shopping online (which rarely works out well for me).
The search for a new pair of "perfect jeans" is always so daunting because of the above noted attitudes that are ever present in almost every store that carries jeans I like. Until there was Dutil. Thank you Dutil! That's all I have to say!
Actually no, I'd like to say more.. If you buy a pair of jeans from here you will undoubtedly walk out well knowledged in your purchase. The staff (who seem more like old friends than staff) know their jeans! They can help you find exactly what youre looking for, and what you didn't know you were looking for. Their suggestions are helpful, not pushy. They don't throw the jeans at you with the highest price tag, but rather the ones that will compliment your body type best. And they are full of useful tips, tricks and personal recommendations / experiences.
Perhaps you think all this is unnecessary? I mean after all, its just a pair of jeans, right? Wrong. If you've ever spent way too much money on a pair of jeans because the sales person assured you they made you look "great" only to have them stretch out in all the wrong places and you were left walking around looking like you were wearing a diaper (in the front and the back), to get home and realize you actually hate them and cant return them, then banish them to your closet for four years before you drop them off in a blue bin, then you'd know how important a knowledgeable sales person is. In which case I say to you: Go to Dutil! -

Best denim store in Vancouver. One of the best stores I've shopped in, period!
We came here this weekend to get some new jeans for the boyfriend. He had a pair of Lucky Brand jeans that he wore everyday, but they didn't have that style/colour anymore. After checking Yelp, we came to Dutil, and boy are we glad we did. Tons of excellent, excellent quality raw denim from numerous brands. He tried on some Cheap Mondays and a few other brands before finding heaven in a pair by Naked and Famous. Reasonably priced, too, for raw denim.
I wasn't planning on shopping for myself, but I decided to try some on just for giggles. The sales person was incredibly helpful and found a pair from Made and Crafted by Levi's that fit me perfectly and didn't make my wide birthing hips look like, well, wide birthing hips. I didn't buy them, but I've been kicking myself and I think I'll have to go back.
Dutil has a sister shop around the corner that serves as a showcase for one brand every six months. Right now it's Naked and Famous, which we discovered when the sales person called over to see if they had the pants my boyfriend liked so much in a darker wash in his size. They did, and the staff person at that store was just as helpful as at Dutil.
He ended up with two pairs of jeans that day and loves them both. Compared to his new ones, my old jeans are so unsatisfying. Off to Dutil when I get a chance!Listed in: Time to shop

I luvs me a good retail environment and Dutil fits the bill. They specialize in all things denim. The store kind of reminds me of an old barn house you may find in the middle of the prairies, with tires, old sewing machines, smeg fridges, and incredible funky bails of denim. Not to forget to mention the piles of jeans as far as the eye can see. They offer up both men's and woman's in all the best brands.

and coming in 2009 Dutil is launching their own brand of denim, and since these guys know their stuff I imagine they will be premium for sure. -

I've been here once and it left an extremely good first impression on me.
I have no knowledge of raw denim or anything like that but I came in here with a friend one afternoon and was overwhelmed by all their jeans everywhere. Just by listening to a conversation the staff had with my friend, I knew that the employees really knew their stuff!
They were super friendly and quick to answer any questions and make suggestions with no pressure on whether or not you purchase anything. -

I just got the most amaaaazing black, super-skinny, raw denim jeans with the help from the most knowledgable sales person known to the planet..
The original price was $308.00! I paid half that.
Totally worth it, and as said in previous reviews, you will more than likely walk out with a great pair too. How could you not?
I'm glad my 100th review is something I'm 100% pleased with! Bonus.Listed in: Greatest Hits, Looking Hawt Girrl!

It's pretty hard, if you're looking for Jeans in Vancouver, to beat Dutil. Based on selection and quality alone, they have the corner on the market. They feature almost all of the biggest brands you'd find in any other shop and have most every colour, if not also cut, you can think of.
What I love is that, for both a boutique store and a store in gastown, it features lots of high quality brands but for pretty diverse prices. Even though there are the super-high end $200 pairs, there are often pairs for $40-70 which is pretty usual for men's jeans even at the cheapest stores in town.
They lose the one star because , though they satisfy my needs jean-wise, I can imagine there are some demographics they do not. They are more hipster than hip-hop and cowgirl than cowboy so I'm sure there are numerous people out there who can come in and leave empty handed. But I think if you're looking for some good denim, it's worth checking out. -

Dutil is for denim!
You can practically find anything in this denim only store. Really if it's denim, they have it. I mean not denim art, bags or accessories -- just teh typical denim things, like jeans, jackets, jeans and maybe a few t-shirts. I went to dutil after I heard they had the latest Hudson's in and it was true. Cheaper than Holt Renfrew, thy had the jeans in all sizes and shades of denim. Lovely. I also went to a really cool DJ party here, the room was packed and everyone was having a good time. They should make this into an after-hours drinking place. -

Since its opening in 2006, Dutil has become the premier destination for denim. They carry all the major lines like Earnest Sewn, Nudie, APC, J Brand, Acne Jeans, amongst others. The denim market has become incredibly over-saturated over the years, and often now, when I pop into shops, I have a hard time distinguishing one line from the other, one embroidered backpocket from the next.
Here, upon entry, the thought of sifting through all that denim in search of the perfect pair may overwhelm, and at $200 a pair--though that is now the standard--you may want to take your time before settling on a pair from their infinite stock. -
Review from Sam L.
Not only is the denim selection spectacular here, but the staff are friendly and super knowledgable, and not in the same way they're knowledgable at a department store where it sounds like they read the features off of a teleprompter. These people truly love jeans and it shows. I've bought two pairs of jeans here, and my girlfriend picked up a pair yesterday. The staff were patient and honest, saying when something didn't look right and brought pair after pair until the right ones were found. However, if you're looking for a pair of jeans with crazy stitching, gold, or tattoo style tigers or dragons embroidered on them, this is not the place for you.

Best store in Vancouver. I want to shake the owners hands and even the sales staff. I wish they sold more than denim but in my opinion, they turned fashion, business and class into an all out art worthy of total praise!
Most people in Vancouver are rather fashionable and aware of the brand and trend cultures around them. One of the biggest parts of their defined style is in the denim department, a world filled with rhinestones, stitching, fit, wash and a bunch of labels that throw around 'Japanese' as a selling point. For many people interested in denim, price, while an integral element to their purchasing decisions, may sometimes have to take a backseat to fit, comfort and style. Many people hate shopping for denim because it forces them to try on several pairs, sometimes never finding anything at all that may fit them, and even going to pretentious places where staff aren't helpful and will say that even a dead goat would look good on their hopeful customers. In two words, denim shopping is: time-consuming and stressful.
Dutil is the savior.
Tucked away in the Gastown district, Dutil offers many great and famous labels as well as some more obscure ones. Recently, they made their own brand of denim, with a custom-made silver circle that is attached to the belt loop to be used as a sunglass holder. The jeans are all hand picked in terms of selection and many are sold at great prices that sometimes are lower than their competitors like Holts.Leone and Gravity Pope.
The store is spacious and artisitic, lending itself to a country-western type barn to emphasize the denim culture being tied to the cowboy lifestyle. Lots of comfy seating for the girl or boyfriend who have hurting feet and uninterested eyes at shopping.
The sales staff is INCREDIBLE. Very helpful, honest and knowledgeable in fit, styles and materials. They don't mind if you ask a million questions and let you try on as much as you want without even giving a hint to pressure one to buy a single pair of anything. They love their craft.
I could go on for days about how good this place is..but in all honesty, it's just a work of art. It's a great place to get good denim and serves a wide range of patrons. It makes itself even more worthy of praise by having a great team of owners and staff. -

Very hard to fine fault with dutil. The staff know what they're talking about and the selection is excellent (esp. for Vancouver). I walked in today and said what I was looking for....in no time I was in a dressing room with a variety of what I was seeking. Of course I walked out with new jeans. Great styles, great brands....great staff. Check them out.
