Review from Orin B.
The cafe of this portion has many good choices, they food is good, and it has an extremely local feel to it. As people entered and left, they were greeted by name.
The greatest part of the restaurant is the bakery up front. All the pastries and cakes looked excellent and the few we did purchase were absolutely delicious. -

Good quality baked goods, probably the best you will find in downtown Victoria. Their café on the other hand can be best described as a suitable hub for local seniors, with portions barely big enough to fill a cavity.
Prices are reasonable, and it's pretty darn clear that their portions focus on an aging clientele.
Service at the cash is cordial, but I may have had the bad luck of getting a sour puss for a server. Sweet old lady? Reminded me of my grade 1 teacher, as she pierced me with a look of disapproval for asking for a simple glass of water.
I ordered the croquette burger, a personal favorite of mine, but their version is a tiny tot turd meant for an elementary school cafeteria.
Will I go back? No bloody way! I'll go to another bakery for baked goods, and stick to John's Place when I want to get my fill during these financial turbulent times.

I came in for the bakery part, not the restaurant cafe part. I was impressed by the dutch goodies they had (king peppermints, stroop waffles), and I decided to indulge in buying some chocolates - all were fantastic and amazing. The girl working behind the counter was really friendly and sincere.
Worth a visit for a tasty treat :) -

The Dutch Bakery has THE BEST little desserts. If you are downtown and looking for a little dessert treat to take home, the Dutch Bakery is your best bet.
It is a cute, old fashioned, diner style lunch stop inside.
It's worth visiting. -

This place is much more like a diner than the cute cafe I was expecting. Fine for a quick sit-down lunch, but don't expect more than a simple diner where you'll be packed next to strangers.
I wasn't that impressed by the menu... the sandwiches sounded and looked pretty standard. I got one veal croquette with toast and a side salad. The salad was as basic as they come: a few wimpy iceberg lettuce leaves, a couple slices of tomatoes, and no choice of dressing (it ended up being some creamy type, which I generally avoid). The whole wheat toast (you get a choice of other breads too) was buttery and hearty, and I recommend getting the croquettes here. Crispy on the outside, the creamy inside melts in your mouth.
Everything on the pastry menu sounded pretty tantalizing, but we finally decided on the Mocha Tart and the Vanilla Slice, which were recommended. The Mocha Tart was fine but far from phenomenal, and the vanilla slice was way too sweet and rich. I have an unhealthy ability to enjoy really sweet and rich desserts, but I just did not find the Vanilla Slice enjoyable at all. It's cool that this place has been run by the same family for over 50 years, but I was a bit disappointed. I think you just have to go there with appropriate expectations. -

Stopped by here for lunch after a recent trip to Russell's Books (aka 'book heaven'). My thoughts:
1. The girl who served me was absolutely stellar. Oh, I don't use that word lightly - she was incredibly energetic and enthusiastic while still remaining genuine, and were I reviewing just her, it'd be 5 stars outright. It was rather difficult to catch her (or any waitress') attention simply because it was so crazy busy - not her fault, just the way that place is.
2. I agree with another reviewer who mentioned that one should be prepared to be packed in amongst strangers. It was not really the atmosphere I was looking forward to when I thought of eating lunch and picking out one of my many new-old books to start - on one end of my table I was right next to the bathroom, on the other I was right next to another two-seater table from which every time the woman on the inside would get up, I'd get very intimately acquainted with her buttocks or groin, depending on which way she decided was less embarassing to try and get between my table and hers.
3. The food was ... *okay*. I chose a bacon and egg sandwich with potato salad. There really aren't a lot of choices for sides - and the potato salad was somewhat disappointing, mostly because I grew up with a mother who makes the potato salad of the gods. The bread on the sandwich, I will mention, was *really* good - soft and fresh and delicious - but presentation, cooking quality, etc - well, I mean, it's plain fare. For what it is, it's fine - but I am, as I've mentioned in other reviews, a fairly picky eater, and even for me this was really 'plain' fare.
To be fair with respect to the food, I believe they may be deliberately catering to an older crowd than me - when I say the place was packed, I mean it was packed with tables full of seniors out for a soup and sandwich and a coffee, or something very like it. For such people, this would be a great place. The portions are smaller without being skimpy, the prices are very good, and the food is plain, ordinary, simple food. Me - eh. I'd go back and try a few more things if I happened to be in the neighborhood - there are other things on the menu that interest me. Oh, and the lemon meringue pie I had for dessert was out of this world. That, again, gets a 5 star rating if we take it on its own. -

This place has been open for over 50 years in the Victoria area and it's now run by the grandchildren of the same family.
They have a bakery in front and a decent sized diner type dining room.
Everything is fresh, homemade, and gourmet here.
I ordered a mini breakfast for $3.80.. it included two eggs, two slices of toast, a slice of ham, and hashbrowns. It's definitely a good deal.
They even give a carousel of great jams like blackberry, orange marmalade, and peanut butter for those who prefer.
The people who work here seem to genuinely like their job and are really good at it.
+ very low prices
+ good food
- they close around 6 pm -

Feels like an institution. Pretty good burgers. Exceptionally cheap.
Definitely a neat little place. -

Cheap for the quality and quantity that you get.
A very nice atmosphere and reputation, for which it gets a lot of its hype. The food was alright, a little cold, could have had more flavour.
Had breakfast with dessert, the cake was the standard loaf you get most places, the mocha torte was slightly better.
Ordered a black-forest cake from them. It was ready fairly quickly, was cheap, and was of acceptable quality. -

I agree with the other reviewer who said this is obviously an institution - it was packed!! But we bypassed the line by sitting at the counter. The pastries here were fantastic! We split 3 pastries and had a cuppa tea - despite being filled with copious amounts of buttercream they were surprisingly light. Apparently their dalas are the sh**, but we are saving those for next time we stop by - there will be a next time for sure!

This is a busy place at breakfast-time, and it's easy to see why: delicious pastries and good omelets at reasonable prices. My daughter enjoyed the breakfast here so much that we came back the next day. We especially liked the chocolate eclairs.

If you want a slice of Victoria at its quirky best, look no further. I was introduced to the Dutch Bakery by a friend many years ago and we always have the hamburger. Yep, just "the hamburger". Nothing fancy, no sides, just the plain hamburger and it's great. We have a long standing tradition of picking out one or two elderly diners who are eating on their own and we ask our server to put their bills on our tab. It's a nice surprise for them and it's a tradition that we have passed on to our own children. We don't do it anywhere else - the Dutch Bakery just kind of evokes that kind of thing. This is where the real locals go for birthday cakes and pastries.

I'll come here for cookies!!!!! They have a cute selection of stuff that would make a good dessert platter. Their marzipan ring is also really awesome.

Wow!
Baked good, sandwiches, full meals, chocolates, they are all fantastic! Not the cheapest in town but the best buy for the quality.
I keep coming back to the veal croquettes and hashbrowns. Everything is fresh. Great breakfasts and milkshakes too. We often get some of the meat pies and pastries to eat at the park.
It always has folks in it. Lots of regulars that come by as part of their day.
They are open Tuesday - Saturday (like many places in Victoria) from 7:30am to 5:30pm -

limited menu. We had ham and cheese omlettes, 2 half orders and a full order. Potatoes were dry and if you are from the states, the smallness of the omlettes will surprise you. They were pretty good, but I would say they are a one and two egg version based on what you order. A light breakfast. You can substitute a small fruit cup for the potatoes. This is primarily a bakery. They are closed from Jan 1 through 11 for employee's holiday.

A popular place, full even on a Tuesday morning. Many old people eat here and it makes for great people watching. Bakery in front, diner in the back - old furniture but not full of kitch relics.
