i've tried the blueberry, cookie monster, honey glazed, and the maple bourbon...all of them were amazing...i've never heard of anyone having a doughnut from here that they didn't love, and they always have different flavors every time i go in there...

it's a great stop right across the street from the L, so you can treat yourself before or after your train ride...

The decor of this place is great down to the music. It was also at just the right volume. Had a PB & J doughnut which was pretty damn good. I love how it's served on a slice of a small tree trunk. Points for creativity.

The coffee wasn't necesarily the best that I've had. My cup tasted watered down, however I watched a guy come in after me who said the coffee was great and that was the only reason he comes there. The front guy pretty much spent most of his time on the internet but in his defense it was slow when I came. Feel as though that would have been a great time to interact more with the customers (namely me) to talk up the products they sell or wipe down the tables. They were a little messy from previous customers.

They sell ice cream  that stays in covered boxes in the freezer. I think sometimes peope forget that we eat with our eyes. The doughnuts are a little high in price for my taste ($2.50), but considering thats what pays the rent, not to mention these  aren't exactly box doughnuts, I will be back to try the others. I hope they stay in business a long time.

A friend saved me from frantic final studying by sporadically texting me on a whim and asking me if I felt like coming to williamsburg for vegan donuts. Hey I have an unlimited metro card so why not? I came a bit late and they were almost closing, but my friends already bought their donuts and let me have a quarter of a coconut, glazed and pb&j.
Absolutely delicious!! Possibly the best donuts I've ever eaten, although I have to admit I've never tried the other artisan donut bakeries in nyc before. I'm not a vegan but you don't have to be to enjoy the quality of the donuts here. Minus one star for being a bit pricey and for closing that early (around 6? not sure exactly, my sense of time went out the window a long time ago)

I didn't actually try a doughnut considering they had about 4 in the case, which seemed unappealing (where all the good ones gone??!?! maybe....)

But the inside is really nice, seems like a cool place to hang out and chat with friends. I asked them if they had a gluten free donut and they said they were working on it! Win!

I love how they're health conscious. I will come back to actually eat a donut in the future.

I love California so much, but I don't bother eating doughnuts at home any more. Nothing measures up to the New York versions I've had and Dun-Well's are among the very best. I bought a vanilla sprinkle for myself and a chocolate glazed to take back to my kid and it was all I could do to keep from eating his, too. Amazing!

Holy sweet Mary of vegan delights.  It's been twenty years since I've had a donut and it's really been one of maybe three things I've lusted over in my vegetable loving lifestyle.

When we walked in, the gentleman behind the counter took one look at me and knew I was some sort of case.  Especially when I was panting heavy and asking if I could take a picture of the display case and then made sure they were vegan, then spilled my story to him.

I ordered a glazed with chocolate frosting and sprinkles, a blueberry, and a powdered with jelly filling.  After my best friend took pictures of me with all three I dug in.

    Pure.  Bliss.

The donuts were like gourmet super enhanced Dunkin, oh God, they were out of control.  It was everything I hoped for and more.  I can still smell them from time to time, even though it was almost a week ago that I first took a bite, they are now a part of me.  And I need more.   I wonder if they would ever overnight them to Atlanta for a pretty penny...

The doughnuts at Dun Well are sort of like cupcakes, the base is not very flavorful and the frosting/glaze is extremely sweet.

It always disappoints me when a vegan establishment makes food that is not delicious, it discourages non vegans from eating vegan food and gives them the opportunity to write off vegan food as disgusting.

I tried the peanut butter cup and the cappuccino doughnut. The peanut butter cup was my favorite of the two, it had a filling of peanut butter and was topped with chocolate glaze and a chunk of peanut butter cup. The cappuccino wasn't really that flavorful, the glaze maybe had a hint of coffee but the doughy part was pretty bland. While they weren't terrible, I've definitely had better vegan doughnuts. The Cinnamon snail definitely beats this place and even Babycakes'  gluten free doughnuts are better than dun well. Also shouldn't a specialty doughnut shop make yeast and cake doughnuts?

Since I only tried two of the flavors, I definitely want to give this place another chance. I also hope they start making cake doughnuts!

Did I really just take the L train over to Montrose Blvd----soley for some dunwell doughnuts?

    *Glances upward*

It's overcast, chilly (early spring you tricked me!), with interminent teasing rain.....yet the siren call of the best damn doughnut on the East Coast (CinniSnail I still love you) had me front and center.

The interior is warm, relaxed, and inviting--just like the owners and staff. Visually, the doughnuts are beautiful--large, fluffy, with inventive glazes that demand complete consumption.

Thank goodness I do not live anywhere in the vicinity of DunWell because my weight would be dun well...and over *rimshot*

To see an idea that grew between friends, to the talk of the veggie community, then greedy nyc community, to an actual storefront, to the best doughnut in NYC (open less than a year!)--pure inspiration!

I'm always on the lookout for tasty vegan treats, and DunWell doesn't disappoint.

Except on Mondays. They're not open on Mondays. :(

I only seem to want donuts on Mondays.

Point being, any other day of the week, DunWell will satisfy your craving for a delicious, sugary, moist, fluffy pastry with a hole in the middle. The flavors and colors are rich, vibrant, and inviting. I haven't seen many flavors that I thought were particularly 'inventive', but I don't care so much about that. It's the simple things in life. Plus, if you can't execute a simple chocolate-frosted donut, how can I be impressed by or expect your Lavender-Rosewater-Lemon Zest-Brown (Vegan) Butter donut to be something special? Sounds like a botanical nightmare, actually......

The shop itself is cute and the donuts are tended by adorable Bushwick boys in bow ties. Two tasty treats in one! (see what I did there?) They also carry Sweet and Sara S'mores and Lula's Dairy-Free Ice Creams, from which you can make a donut sundae if you're feeling grandiosely hoggish.

This place is such a dream. I think my favorite is a tie between the plain glazed and the pb&j. The elvis and chocolate with peanuts are lovely as well. I also tried one of their little drop doughnuts and it was amazing. Note to self: do not disregard little doughnuts because they're small.

I typically prefer simple, traditional flavors when it comes to doughnuts, so I'm not interested in a lot of what Dun Well offers. Still, they've always got an exciting selection and ordering is never easy for me! I do wonder if they'll ever dabble in other types of doughnuts? I would kill for a boston cream or a cruller! It would be fun if they experimented with flavoring the dough as well. Like a pumpkin doughnut with a maple glaze? Or an apple fritter? I would die.

Their coffee is good, too! It is french-pressed and sufficiently strong, perfect for doughnut-dunking purposes. Nice selection of non-dairy creamers as well. If this place had a bathroom, I'd hang out there all day!

I heart Dun-Well. I've been a few times now, and am always happy with the donuts and love the old-timey (but not too kitschy) atmosphere. Combine that with the fact that one of the owners is manning the counter, and it's wonderful.

The donuts are plentiful, with plenty of classic flavors, and other tasty ones, such as vanilla chai and 'the greyhound' (a grapefruit/vodka flavor combination. yes, yes, indeed).

Prices are reasonable compared to other gourmet donuts, and you're getting organic and vegan to boot. Only thing to be sure to remember is cash only! Recently slipped my mind when I was picking up a box to bring to work. But for day-to-day visits, the prices to get coffee (or tea!) and a donut won't break the boundaries of your wallet.

I have only tried two of their donuts, but it was pretty yummy I have to say.  I had the Glazed Donut and the Strawberry Lemon Drop, and the latter was super tasty.  Sweet and tangy, though small, it is cheaper than the regular sized donuts.

What I really loved about the place was the coffee, I don't know if the's milk or the coffee itself, but it sure beats CUP's coffee across the street.  They have a variety of milks to choose from; Rice Milk, Almond Milk, Silk Cream and one other that I might've forgotten.

I am legitimately obsessed with these donuts. I'm not kidding.

My entire instagram album is pictures of these donuts. I sometimes eat four in one sitting. I retweet all of their posts about the flavors they have every day. I have decided that my next pet will be named "Doughnut". I have a specific pair of jeans that are only for eating jelly donuts, because they sit below my stomach so if I eat too much I don't feel constricted, and it doesn't matter if I get powdered sugar all over them. Christopher and I talk about Downton Abbey.

My friends are worried about me.

I don't care. Dunwell, nothing can change how I feel about you.

These are probably right now the best doughnuts in the world, vegan or not.  The vegan part works in our favor because we were looking for goodies for my son, who is highly allergic to eggs and dairy.  Believe me, he will not let us touch his share.  We have been there twice, and we have tried several unusual flavors available nowhere else, including margarita, almond coco joy (tribute to Hershey's), lime vanilla, peanut butter and jelly, raspberry frosted.  They are the simply the best I have ever tried in my life, and I have had many NY doughnuts in my time.  Nothing else in NY compares to these, and I seriously doubt if I would find anything better in Chicago, Tokyo, London or any other big city, so there you go - best in the world.  Very good coffee too.

The place is run and owned by 2 friendly guys, who do everything, and sits in a somewhat run-down but rapidly up-and-coming neighborhood.  It's a very retro place decorated by amusing drawings by a woman who also sings (you can buy the album and the prints right there), plus all sorts of antique kitchen implements and an old radio.

    Highly, highly recommended.

I was enjoying some delicious Dun-Well Doughnuts with my wife when she casually said to me, "You realize those aren't regular doughnuts, right? They're Vegan doughnuts."

The smile on my face vanished as veins in my neck bulged. I stood up, slammed the table to the ground and grabbed the man behind the counter by the shirt. "YOU LIED TO ME!!!" I screamed. My wife grabbed my shoulders and exclaimed "No, No, No!!!"

I punched the man and then started throwing pies, all of which landed on the face of an older woman. Another employee broke wine bottles over my head. I broke a few plates as another employee finally subdued me with multiple frying pan blows to the head.

All references to Chris Farley skits aside, I see why Daily News named this place the best in New York! I enjoyed four doughnuts, all of which were great. Salted chocolate, jelly and blueberry are all light and fluffy and just sweet enough. Sometimes doughnuts can be cloyingly sweet. Not here. Sometimes a blueberry flavor can be really acidic. Again, this doughnut was not guilty.

The cinnamon sugar might be the best doughnut I have tasted. Please try it. And then mail one to me.

The doughnuts are served on tree ring plates that are really cool.

The coffee is great too. My wife thought she saw some actual milk behind the counter for it. So I decided to ask given that they seemed so committed to the Vegan thing. The response, "We don't. I wouldn't allow it."

I love that commitment to Veganism. Please know that they are just as militant making sure their's are the best doughnuts in New York!

Vegan Doughnuts? Yes! The frosting, fillings, and glazes on the doughnuts were flavorful and had more depth than I remember regular Doughnuts having from my pre-vegan days. My only issue was that I arrived and got my order in the early afternoon and I thought the doughnuts had a slight dry quality to them. I don't know if this was a vegan sacrafice one has to make or if it was because of my late timing. Either way I was pleased I stopped in.

Also, they will gladly supply you with a glass of sy milk if coffee isn't on your agenda.

Now, I am not vegan, and yes, I can tell that these are vegan doughnuts. Maybe if someone handed me a cake doughnut and didn't say anything I might not notice, but with the yeast doughnuts, there is definitely a difference. Having said that, the doughnuts are still really good, and I actually love their cake doughnuts - I often pop in for one with a cup of their awesome coffee (I gotta say, they make much better coffee than the straight up coffee shop across the street). The staff is so, so friendly, and the owners are really passionate about their business. The place is adorable inside, too - dark wooden floors and tables, all of the products are beautifully displayed, and on top of selling doughnuts and coffee, they offer ice cream and Italian sodas, as well as free wi-fi. It's quickly become a favorite neighborhood hangout in the few months that it's been open, and with good reason.

Dun-Well makes awesome donuts (the New York Daily News ranked it among the best in NYC) and is a quaint, friendly coffee shop on top of it. It's a great neighborhood spot and looks and feels old-timey (while I like the look and feel, it seems to be a direct copy of Lula's Sweet Apothecary).

I had a coconut-almond, a chocolate-peanut, and a German chocolate "drop" donut (which are made by dropping them directly in the oil, I overheard). All of them were wonderful, with the former two being like soft, chewy regular donuts, and the drop donut being a cakey one instead.

The service is always friendly and helpful. If you get there later in the day (after 5 p.m.), they might be sold out of the regular donuts, but will probably have some drop donuts available.

Dun-Well also has a small selection of loose-leaf teas (I wish they'd expand those options).

I don't know if Dun-Well is my favorite vegan donut in the world (Fritz Pastry in Chicago makes a great one), but it's excellent and tasty and decadent and far better than what you can get at more famous places like Voodoo Donut in Portland and Mighty-O in Seattle. I'll be back.

So they are vegan....that is something I can overlook if they made up for it in the flavor department, but they dont. So the doughnuts are small.....that is something I can overlook if the doughnuts were large and fluffy with lots of icing, but they are meager.

Compared to placed like Dough in Bed Stuy or the Doughnut Plant in the East Village, (places that emphasive an amazing product with little or close to no frills) Dunwell is all frills and no product. It seems clear to me, from the huge overly considered old-timey interior design down to the curled mustache of the owner working the register that Dunwell chooses to focus more on their "look."

    Food:
~vanilla chai doughnut (3.5 stars): the icing was very good, not cloyingly sweet, and you can really taste the chai.  The doughnut itself was a bit bland.  Without the frosting it would not have stood up to much.  However, it did have a wonderful chew.  It was just on the denser side and didn't have much flavor. $2.50
~peanut butter and jelly doughnut (3 stars): same comments on the doughnut as above, but the peanut butter stood true to its colors.  Very peanut buttery which was nice.  Jelly was a good complement.  Really tasted like you were eating a real peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Staff was so so nice, and the shop is really quite cute.  However, I'm just not a huge fan of their doughnuts.

I recently became vegan, so I write this review having fresh experiences from both sides of the white picket dairy fence, and thus feel confident that I can recommend this old-timey Brooklyn shop (a pleonasm for sure!) to both vegans and non-vegans.

First, the doughnuts. They're yeast doughnuts, and they're airy, chewy, and topped (and sometimes filled) with deliciousness, such as coconut crumbs, cinnamon dust, chocolate frosting, and seasonal toppings, like peach cobbler in the Spring and "red dragon" cherry for Chinese New Year. At any time (and my stretched-out pants indicate that I've been four times in the past six weeks), the shop serves eight or so flavors, on a rotating basis.

Next, the coffee. While not as cracktastic as Blue Bottle coffee, it's high quality and can be sweeted with soy and almond (yes!) milk.

Third, the ice cream. Yes, ice cream from Lula's is an available doughnut topping for the gluttons / individuals with tape worms. The ice cream doughnut sundae, from my vantage point, looks last-meal worthy (and, perhaps, inducing).

Finally, the decor. Of course, the shop is decked out with the requisite Brooklyn shop uniform of vintage furnishings and reclaimed wood tables; even the owner sports a nifty (hand-tied, I was told) bow tie. And there are usually enough chairs so that I can sit and savor the doughnuts and coffee.

So what's not to love about doughnuts that will satisfy your stomach and your conscience for supporting vegan, organic, and locally-prepared products?

Yummy and friendly!  The doughnuts were amazing and the coffee was super tasty.  AND, just a side note: I'm not vegan, so this isn't some dietary groupie thing.  As testament to this, I took a half dozen doughnuts the bar where I work and every single one of my regulars (think cranky, very NON-vegan older dudes) went nuts for them too.  You should have seen the evil eyes I got when I admitted they were vegan.

Happy to have Dun-well in the 'hood.  Don't get hung up on the "Vegan" part and try them for yourself.

Seriously the most delicious donut I have ever eaten in my entire life! It was the perfect texture, incredible flavor, and makes me wish I had been eating vegan donuts my whole life. The coffee on the other hand is kind of disappointing, I thought about taking star off because its a VERY weak blend of coffee, but maybe thats what they were going for. I'd prefer a full bodied blend if I had the choice.

Also this place is  adorable, it's seriously the cutest little place on earth. Lots of nice seating. The only part that needs a better lay out is the counter. They cash you out where you poor your own coffee which makes you feel like your in everybody's way for a few minutes. Otherwise well dun! :)

I walked in and I felt like I was on the set of Portlandia.
This place breaks into another dimension of hip that  briefly presents that rare moment where wburg hipsters could make the fun, for a change.

But I digress... I could forgive anything if a delicious doughnut is brought to my doughnut hole.
    But this wasn't the case.

It isn't right- the dough is dense and the topping to dough ratio is all wrong. I can't really describe what I ate, but it was served to me on a tree trunk slab. I don't know why this is happening to me.

But I know they opened not long ago. If they calm down with the costumes and that theme music to focus on the doughnuts, I will be back to give it a second chance.

I'm not going to lie... If I were Superman my weakness wouldn't be Kryptonite, it would be doughnuts. I try to stay away from sweets, but for some reason I'm drawn to doughnuts like whoa. (I haven't used that expression since high school... throw back!)

Anyway, enough about me. I dropped into Dun Well on a Wednesday afternoon while wandering in the East Billyburg vicinity. Should have figured something was up when I saw the sheer amount of hipsters* sipping coffee and Facebooking on their Macs**. I immediately lunged towards the doughnut display case and was excited to see they had jelly filled doughnuts. Didn't see pricing on any doughnut aside from a small one ($1.25) so I ordered up a jelly filled and two glazed for my little brother and sister***. I ate my doughnut there - which they served to on a tree stump plate (cute but entirely unnecessary). First bite and I was confused. The dough itself was a combination of bland and chewy and the jelly was far too tart. They loaded that bad boy up with too much powered sugar. Meh.

I then realized what the problem was... I was in a Vegan doughnut shop. I got duped. I had no idea. Straight up: It was a mistake. I'm sure to vegans this place is great, but to the rest of us normal people (vegetarians included) this place is straight up whack for our taste-buds.

Will I be back? For sure not. Sorry, but extremely overpriced ($2.50 for a doughnut!?), bland doughnuts do not appeal to my sweet tooth.

Also, a note to the owners: Maybe throwing up a sign somewhere that SCREAMS Vegan would be helpful and would have saved me about $8 and a part of my life I will never get back.

    ------

*I'm not a big fan of hipsters.
    **I'm a PC girl.
***My sister is the ultimate doughnut queen. She outwardly wishes I would be get a job with Dunkin Donuts in order to help indulge in her obsession. Her thoughts on the doughnut:
Me: "So, what did you think?"
    Her: "It was...OK."
Me:"Really? You don't have to lie to me, you can be honest."
    Her: "It was weird."

No, dear sister... it was Vegan.

I stopped by Dun-Well after a tough workout. I had heard of the new shop a few weeks before and had been meaning to try it out, and I figured I deserved a treat. It's practically on top of the Montrose Ave subway stop off the L line, so it was pretty convenient.

I tried the doughnut with delightfully pink raspberry icing and it was pretty much to die for. I had never had a vegan doughnut (I'm not vegan but I enjoy a variety of cuisines), and I was pleasantly surprised. The texture was light and fluffy and the aftertaste was (dare I suggest it?) better than any other doughnut I have had. It was a bit pricey ($2.50 for just one doughnut), but I would say it's worth it. The cozy little storefront was also the perfect reprieve from a cold, windy day.

Next time I go I will probably bring home a dozen of these babies so I can try all of the flavors!

I'm not sure if this place is still Vegan or not. It doesn't seem to advertise itself as such, and the donuts seem to have gotten tastier, however they may have experienced a bit of a "vegan backlash" judging from the pointlessly antagonistic reviews reflected here, and just don't sell themselves on that point anymore.

Regardless, it's hard not to be charmed by this well lit space right by the Montrose L Stop. The owner is super-nice, and has obviously put a lot of heart into the place: attention to detail, old-timey music always playing in the background, and always wearing a bow-tie. He almost always says goodbye when I leave.

Coffee is decent. Donuts are fairly tasty, though a bit too sweet and fairly expensive, though I understand he is trying to source quality ingredients, so I can see why.

Also, to anyone complaining about hipsters or gentrification while writing a review on Yelp (for Christ's Sake): Do you think you could grasp irony if it hit you over the head with a bowling pin?

I heard about this place a few months ago and knew I had to try it next time I was in Brooklyn. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. I managed to squeeze 4 visits into a 2 day period despite the fact that the L wasn't running so I had to walk 10 blocks in 15 degree weather. And I didn't even think I liked donuts all that much!

These are hands down the best yeasted donuts I've ever had, vegan or not. They're airy and chewy and full of flavor and I'm drooling just thinking about them. Now if only they'd open up a spot in Baltimore...

    I'm a HUGE fan of donuts.....real donuts.
But I thought I'd give this place a try based on the many good reviews it has.

I had a chocolate frosted with peanuts and a jelly donut.

    Both were absolutely horrible.

The 'chocolate' frosting was bland and the donut itself was pretty bad too.
The jelly....took one bite and thought I bit into something coated with some kind of cleaning product!!! Straight into the garbage!
    DISGUSTING!!!!

You poor poor vegans.....suck it up and eat a real donut!!

***EDIT: Thanks for all of your kind words to those who have taken the time to email me and compliment me on my review of this horrible establishment!!!! Your support is greatly appreciated!!! :) ****

Can I have my birthday party here?

Very good donuts, finally at a central location that you can depend on. The donuts themselves are heavy but not too much so, that come in many a creative flavors. From the Moo Shoes launch event to an actual store that is pretty fancy, very well done (no pun intended).

Super delicious! A great selection (would be 5 stars if there were creme filled ones) of amazing and fresh donuts.  They are nice and doughy and perfectly covered in chocolate.  I got a variety of chocolate covered donuts- the best being the mexican chocolate.  Just a nice little spice to make it extra awesome.  Regular coffee is self serve and good with a selection of soy, almond, and rice milk for no extra charge.  Why do some places charge 50 cents for soy?
The guys working were nice and chill.
The space is cool and comfortable with cool tree cuts as plates. It wasn't crowded or loud, just nice.  If I didn't have my dog outside, I would have sat with my friends and spent some time hanging out talking.
I don't crave donuts often, but I know that whenever I do, this is where I am heading!

I'm sure many have said it, but it's true. IT'S ABOUT TIME NYC GETS A BONA FIDE VEGAN DONUT SHOP.

Every bit of taste and texture is SPOT ON. Not greasy. Creative daily flavors and the classics every vegan misses, all reasonably priced. Cozy and warm environment, spirited and friendly service. Less then a block form the train? YES.

    Dun-Well will not disappoint.

I live in NJ and commute to NYC for school, and do not have much time to venture across the East River , but I made the exception when I heard about this place!

My friend and I stopped by late last Friday and found not too many donuts to be had (good for them and bad for us!) but we split a few: the pink lady, the jelly, and a coconut. SO DAMN OM NOM! Sorry to sound like such a kid, but they were so good and worth the junkfood-calories.

The donuts are light but have a chewable, thick texture which is how you picture a donut  to be - not too heavy, but cakey and good. I haven't had a jelly donut in years - they are my favorite but I don't want to waste that craving on the Dunkin Donuts kind, which are nasty. This one was so, so good - the cake, and the raspberry jam inside. so beautiful, so fresh (this is a huge deal to me - love fresh jam), so good.

The owner (co owner?) is a complete sweet heart. He shared some his lunch with my friend and I, a "faux-gras" donut! I cringed at the name because the thought of real fois-gras grosses me out immensely but this tasty version was just a warm pate of I think lentils and walnuts - inside a donut, its such a great idea - especially because I love this dish (which I did not know could also be considered a "faux gras" -anyway~~~) and having it inside a savory donut is pretty genius.

The atmosphere is perfect, down to every detail, and the prices aren't awful for something so well done. Definitely go try!! It's steps away from the Montrose stop, you have no excuses!!

I LOVE proving my boyfriend wrong about vegan food.

First attempt was a fail because they were sold out. While some people might get their panties in a bunch over it I can appreciate the fact that they're making em fresh.

    And boy, are they fresh.

We bought different ones so I could babble about it on here. I bet you're so thrilled. Every donut was soft and a total dream in the mouth. Here are some of the flavor profiles:

Glazed: Classic. Glaze is super sweet but has that nostalgic tingle of sugar and vanilla and the perfect texture.

Blueberry: Only the glaze is blueberry! Boo. Stick some fruit in there! Plz?

Almond Joy: It's the almond extract that you're tasting and it gives it the candy bar taste instead of bits of almond. Love the coconut shavings! I think this one was my favorite.

PB&J: Ok I lied. This might be my favorite. The combination is just SO rich and fun I regret to say I didn't eat a whole one. Next time..

I love this place for their donuts (duh), the atmosphere, the sugary sweet staff, and the fact that it's ridiculously close to my apartment.

Guess I'll be spending a little longer on the elliptical.
