Duchess Bake Shop is everything its name suggests: decadent and delicious!  Everything about Duchess Bake Shop evokes a Parisian attitude, from the gold crown holding, to the arches behind the counter, to the cabinet full of take home goodies, to the french-named patisseries.  It's as though a little piece of Paris has landed itself in Edmonton, and for a moment you may be able to forget you're in a city situated in the Great White North and imagine that you're in some tucked away shop down a cobblestone alley in the most romantic city in the world.  The only thing that may remind you that you're still in Edmonton is the size of the shop: it's probably about twice the size of a patisserie you would find in Paris.

Duchess Bake Shop features an assortment of delectable delights, both savoury and sweet.  My favourite is the pistachio macarons: they literally melt in your mouth.  I was completely unprepared when I tasted my first macaron from Duchess, and it took everything in my being to remain concentrated on the conversation I was having with my friend.

Prices are a bit higher at Duchess than you would find at other cafes and bakeries, but at Duchess, you're paying for much more than a snack and drink: you're paying for l'experience gastronomie.

Duchess was a sweet surprise in many ways for me. I knew it would be delicious (thank you, fellow Yelpers) but I wasn't expecting to fall in love. It happened somewhere between the passionfruit raspberry tart and the lavender shortbread. The former was sweet, light, and just a little tart, while the latter was crumbly, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Both perfect in my books.

Not only are the desserts delicious, but they are gorgeous and come in mini sizes, which are not only adorable, but affordable ($6.00 - $8.00 if memory serves me right), especially when shared between two or three people.

The staff are friendly and helpful as well, and patient with me when I take ages to choose. The decor is beautiful, and I wish to spend every weekend in Duchess and am halted only by the protests of my waistline. I haven't tried their coffee yet, but I will when I can find a seat!

One thing that I learned the hard way is to go in the morning on weekends, because they do sell out of some items.

EDIT: I just tried the 'Duke' cake, and it's to die for. The cake is so rich and chocolatey, and the thin layer of caramel under the icing in the middle makes it so amazing. With the chocolate shell, this cake almost reminds me of a really decadent chocolate bar.

Now I am not a sweet person, much prefer savory but those times when I want something sweet I turn to Duchess.  This place takes me right back to the bake shops in Paris, the tarts, croissants, and macaroons are as delicious as those I had during my visits to France.  One of my favorite items here are their yummy croissant sandwiches, they are perfect size for a lunch bite as you will still have room for a sweet finish.  They definitely have the best macaroons in town and one of my favorite desserts, the passion fruit tart!  It is to die for!

The decor is very french meets trendy.  I love that recently expanded as now there is much more room to sit and enjoy the treats with a great latte!  If you are looking for amazing baked treats for yourself or to take to a party this is definitely the place to go!

Tasty pastries and delicious cakes. The employees are all fashionable and good-looking. It has a young, slightly frenzied vibe - expect long line-ups and quick service. The place is always full to the brim with people sipping on coffee.

    Lovely location and decor.

For my birthday my husband picked up a banana cream pie, a key lime tart, and chocolate tart. WOW. They were all fabulous, but I think the key lime tart was my favourite. I also really love their lemon blueberry scones. I'm so happy I live within walking distance of Duchess, you really can't go wrong here. Very reasonably priced for quality baked goods. I highly recommend.

I've worked (literally) next door to the Duchess for two years now, so it's safe to say that I've tried 98% of their menu.  It's all amazing.  But there are more than enough testimonies to their food on here.  Most recently, we've all been anxiously awaiting the opening of their new space, and now that it has, have had some time to really enjoy it.

The best part of the Duchess has always been their attention to detail.  From how the employees dress, to the stylized interior of the shop, to the incredible quality of their baked goods, you have a real experience every time you walk in. And it's what I would like to imagine walking into a bakery in Paris feels like.  A lot of the comments here from people who have been to bakeries in Paris have said the same thing, and that's a pretty amazing feeling to have in off-downtown Edmonton.

Their new space has taken this exact feeling and expanded on it.  While their fare hasn't changed (grown) as much as we hoped (maybe it will in the future), they've kept all the stylings that made them so popular and replicated it into a larger space.  Walking in to get a drink when every table is full of people happily chatting away feels great.  And you can still get the same amazing blueberry scones, super-dense chocolate brownies or amazing chai lattes as you could before.

If you haven't been there before, it really is a must-see food destination in Edmonton.  If you've already been there, you'll love what they've done with the place.

I have the classic sweet tooth - yes, surprise I am a fan of desserts! So I was more than pleased when this place opened. Sit and relax have a coffee or tea and share a treat with a friend (or just eat the whole thing yourself, because it's all that good).  I've pretty much tried everything they have to offer and it's all wonderful.  And yes they do have savoury items as well for those not afflicted with my desire for desserts (they're equally as good)!

The reason I'm not giving Duchess a 5 star rating at this time is I feel the new bigger space may have taken away some of it's charm.  I met a friend there on Sunday and I ordered a favorite of mine the Blueberry Lemon Glazed Scone and it was dry as was my friend's treat.  Now that's never happened before and I get that with every new place there are hick- ups and bumps in the road, however, they've been at this for a little while so....

Could it be because the glass counters are so much larger and open than the other side and not getting any of the cooled air from the coolers? Maybe they made to many treats?  I don't know, just hoping they figure it out.   I 'm also not a fan of  the 2 doors, it's like one should be marked in and the other out.  It caused some disorganization and chaos, which took away from it's original quaint feel of a Paris Patisserie. Then there is the winter, what's that going to be like with 2 doors? Gosh, I hope they thought of that!

Well I'm still going to go, I'm still going to order my scone in hopes that it was a one time deal.  Will keep you posted!

I feel like due to my stingy-ness, I didn't really give Duchess the proper 5 star review it deserves. I have gone and given them this updated review because it IS my most frequented bakery in Edmonton, I've always been treated kindly, and seriously, the quality is just great.

I feel like whenever I visit a new city, I try to find a Duchess equivalent, and I'm shocked to see that there aren't many options (the only exception being Bouchon Bakery). When i was in L.A. I went to a "patisserie" just off Rodeo Drive and I really had high hopes, but man, was the selection in there anemic, and it certainly didn't have the same ambiance as Duchess.

So now, I'm altering this review to show my appreciation for this independent bakery, and I really appreciate that it's here in the city.

Forget the Queen... Long live The Duchess!

I finally went to Duchess for the first time ever. I kept seeing it on Yelp, hearing good things and I thought "a bake shop with sweet treats in Edmonton, I'm down with that."

My friend and I went in around 4:30 on Sunday, a half an hour before they closed. I stared at the macarons for a long time. Now here's a secret confession, and I know you won't tell anyone because you're cool like that, but I'd never had a real macaron before in my life. Not the pretty, colourful, French macarons. So I ordered two, a pear one and a salted caramel. The pear was really good, but the salted caramel was so delicious it will haunt my dreams. I notice they rotate flavours each month which is nice, but I hope the salted caramel will be in the next time I'm there. I also ordered a meringue, and I don't like meringue but it looked so pretty in the display case that I had to try it. It was yummy.

Duchess is a short detour from my bus route to school. They have coffee, and free wifi, so I'm going to be tempted to stop in on a daily bases. While Duchess isn't super expensive as an occasional treat, as a daily commodity it might be. My wallet and my waist might resent if I go there everyday, but I think I'll have to give an occasional victory to my tastebuds. Even if it isn't on your regular route you should make a detour and try this place out.

I met a girlfriend for coffee and treats yesterday at Duchess. As I've never been, it was an enjoyable experience.
A feast for both the eyes and the taste buds, this is THE bakery to hit up when you have a few hours to kill.
The staff are AMAZING and I am pretty sure I had the best Americano of my life. We ordered the lemon cream tart (to die for), the bread pudding (yummy) and the feta/spinach croissant (flaky goodness). All were delectable and if you can get past the high prices, totally edible!!!
I will be back, credit card in hand, to sample everything this delightful store has in stock.

This bakery is absolute perfection. I have never once been disappointed by a purchase there. The macarons are wonderful, and there are always new flavours to savour. Any of the breakfast treats - scones, croissant, pain au chocolat, etc - are to die for. I've had several of their cakes and pies - The Duke is hands down the best chocolate cake you'll ever eat. Their croissant sandwiches are slightly small (some may say too small - I say you're just leaving room for dessert) but taste wonderful.

Go there if you haven't yet. Actually, go now...

Oooooh mama maaa!  Duchess bakery is certainly the duchess of my heart.  I have no clue how they do it, but they make such delicious and seemingly guilt free (although I'm sure my bulging equator would disagree) baked goods, be it buttery light croissants that flamenco with your taste buds or lavender flavored macarons that transcribe a form of Parisian snobbishness that is one of a kind.

They have a tremendous variety of sweet and savory baked goods all of which can be accompanied with a cup of tea or coffee.  Their loose tea is purchased at Steeps, while the coffee beans are from St. City Roasters, a local roaster.  They serve delicious sandwiches.  If you're in the mood for a light and flavorful sandwich, go for the Caprese sandwich (bocconcini, tomato, basil in between a butter croissant).  Of course, pies, tarts, pastries, cakes - you name it.

I've heard that they have tried to model their cafe on the famous Ladurée cafe in Paris.  Although I haven't been to Paris, I think that their bakery certainly is a cut above the rest in their maintenance of quality, consistency and class.  I have certainly not tried everything on their menu but what I have has been seemingly authentic.

Try out the cafe.  It's not very expensive.  It's delicious, it's fresh, it's local at heart, yet European in soul.

    Summary:
    - So many different treats to choose from (which is a good problem)
    - Great space to hang out although not that many seats
    - Paying for quality vs. quantity

    Detailed review:
I just realized I've never reviewed this place although it's a go to place for me on the weekend when I'm looking for place for a treat. Nothing has ever disappointed me - whether it's the savoury stuff (favs include the pastrami croissant sandwich with pickle) or the sweet stuff (favs include macarons (e.g., salted caramel), lavender madeleines, earl grey shortbread). I really like the space as well as it's always buzzing and filled with interesting people. Only issue is on a busy weekend morning, space to hang out is very much at a premium. Not the cheapest destination out there but their amazing bakings are worth every penny!

The last time I was here I was in a business meeting and decided to try one of their coffees. They do not serve regular coffee, only espresso drinks, so they offered the option of an Americano. I have had Americano's before (a shot of espresso with hot water), and this was one of the best I've had-very creamy espresso, almost no need to add anything (which I usually do).
The scones are scrumptious, as was the apple pastry, croissant sandwich and pretty much every baked good I've had the pleasure of eating here.

OH DUCHESS HOW I LOVE YOU! In the summer of 2009, I met, fell in love, and married my husband in Paris, France! He wasn't French, he was Egyptian. Typical me! I fell in love with Paris. Never thought I would. The derriere certainly had a love-hate relationship: pain au chocolat, baguette, fromage. You get the picture!

It wasn't until I finally arrived back in Edmonton in 2010, that I happened upon Duchess! It cured my Paris blues instantly! Even if you are not wanting to sample their fare, I dare you to at least take a look at what they have to offer. It certainly is ART for the senses. The French really do now how to treat food!

The pain au chocolat is my favourite, of course! You can choose between milk chocolat and dark. My preference is always dark. Other tasty treats that I have had the pleasure of devouring are the lemon meringue cake, their V-Day special ( I cannot even begin to describe this concoction), and DO NOT pass the savory! Their scones are to die for as well as  their tomato and bocconcini sandwich.

This is THE perfect place for a weekend escape. It transports you to France. The decor is, well, French, the staff is plentiful and helpful, and although their baked goods fly out of there in record breaking speed they always seem to have enough to go around.

And although the food looks like expensive art, it is totally affordable!

Make every Sunday a Parisian Sunday in Edmonton! LOVE!

After years of tasting Duchess at various events 'round town, I finally dragged my sweet-loving feet over to the 124th street location for my favourite Office Hours yet.

The staff were so accomodating for our big group and even turned a blue post-it-note into a tab for ease of purchase. (What? We kept getting more and more treats. Isn't that what an afternoon at Duchess is for?) Thanks for being so super nice to us!

Mega-thanks also for baking all those delicious goodies. I tried the strawberry and coconut macarons. Verdict: pure awesome. Plus my buttertart was deep and delicious, and I enjoyed the nibble of almond croissant that kind Jacqueline S shared with me.

Definitely coming back for treats galore. Birthdays, bridal showers, or even a celebratory Friday: Duchess treats, you will be mine.

    Better than Paris!
There is nothing like a typical Parisian day, where I always start with a bakery fresh pain au chocolat, after a run through Luxembourg Gardens. Walking into Duchess Bakeshop is like being transported back to Paris, and the treats from this bakery are more sinfully delicious than anything I've tried there. The croissants are soooooo buttery and flakey!. We went into Duchess for the first time and came out with 4 boxes of baked goods... all of it was incredible. I am their newest regular!

Since I'm the "Duchess" of Duchess Bake Shop I thought I should finally write my review.
If there was only one place I could save in Edmonton it would be Duchess.
I love the treats here. I think every item sold here is me "comfort food", I'm obsessed. Every treat melts in my mouth and I have tried a lot of them. I've tried many of the macaroons, all the meringues, the Florentines, the butter tarts, and my favourite the pain au chocolat. I could live off of just these croissants and be content with my life. Duchess has great gift sets of 10 or so macaroons for little thank-you's! I absolutely love the atmosphere of Duchess it's so open and European. I've gone to Duchess with my girlfriends and with the boyfriend and everyone I have taken there loves it! The Duchess tea blend is one in it's own, a delicious blend of black teas!!!!! Everyone needs to try Duchess, it's simply a must. I can't wait to try the Duchess cake, it's so green, and exciting! Basically, I love Duchess.

I finally made it to Duchess after being nagged by so many friends to go. Upon coming in I was greeted by a very simple and delicate interior, and not surprising, a long lunch line up.

When it came to my turn to order I was greeted by a HUGE smile and I got myself a Ham and Cheese croissant and stared at the macarons for quite a long time before finally deciding on lychee rose and pistachio. Now this was about to be a whole new experience for me, I've never had a macaron before as with a lot of many of the other desserts stuffed inside the glass display. Along with that I got 2 americanos coming to $14.50.

The croissant was moist and soft. It looked incredibly delicate and small but was surprisingly filling! The ingredients tasted so fresh and crisp! Then onto the macaroos, the lychee one was a bit too sweet for me, but the pistachio one is to die for. Not too sweet, just perfect ! And the americano was delicious ! Not too overpowering, made me a little jittery but it was great ! And for a great price !
I will definitely have to come back to Duchess real soon to try many of the other goodies they have.

I went to Dutchess this afternoon for the first time, and made the mistake of asking the staff what I should start with.

They immediately began rattling off both their favourites and the most popular items, complete with detailed lists of the incredible ingredients that went into each dessert. I had to make them stop before I started crying from all the temptation before me!

In the end, I decided to try several of the macaroons: Coconut, Chai, Salted Caramel and Lychee with Rose.

I patiently waited until I reached the bus stop before trying my first taste of the chai one. Immediately, my tastebuds where whisked away from dreary, grey & snowy Edmonton to the exotic wonders and taste sensations of India. The macaroon was delicately sugary and melting in my mouth, the chai ganache inside deliciously full of flavour.

In short, it was love at first bite! And it only got better - the other flavours were even more decadently divine!

I can't wait to head back here for more goodies - I'm just glad I don't work or live closer or I think my entire paycheque could easily get spent here weekly!

The Duchess reigns supreme! Everything from the quasi-Victorian decor to the colourful palette of macarons in the display case is classy and nothing less. Macarons come in a diverse smattering of flavours from salted caramel to pistachio to passion fruit. I like some flavours better than others but all are superbly crafted. Brioche Pepin is a rare treat: rich, eggy brioche bread filled with vanilla custard and morsels of rich chocolate. With a cup of coffee, it is luxurious indulgence. Scones are also decent, though they require a surprising amount of effort to crack through their crusty exteriors. It's small wonder that Duchess does as well as it does. Class and quality and nothing less.

My most recent experience at the Duchess was like a visit to the latest hotspot. I needed a place to hang out while waiting for my ride home after bikram, the Duchess is just down the street and a lovely treat after yoga. Anyway, the place was packed! Standing room only for quite a while. I ordered my latte and an oatmeal-chocolate cookie (both were fantastic) and then claimed a spot to stand near the coffee bar. Eventually I was able to grab space to perch in the make-do window seat and enjoyed people watching until my ride arrived.  He got the brioche pepin and let me sample that too.  Mmmmm the perfect amount of cream and chocolate on this light, buttery pastry.

The rosemary shortbread is not to miss if you enjoy savory treats. I've been very tempted by the lemon meringue cake.

This is not a cheap spot, but worth it if you aren't looking for a Timmy's (or Starbuck's) experience.

I've been here twice, had a few different items each time, and everything I tried ranged from good to excellent. The Duchess and the Banana Cream Pie in particular are fantastic.

A bit pricey, but the difference shows in the ingredients and it is worth it if you want to treat yourself. The Banana Cream Pie for example was $6.00 and about 4 inches in diameter, which is quite a bit smaller than what you would get for the same price at a big grocery store. However, the cream is not just sugary foam - it is actually creamy. The filling tastes like it was made with real bananas rather than yellow-colored paste.

I marched myself over to Duchess this afternoon after reading so many great reviews on here. I only had one thing on the agenda: To try the macaroons. When I arrived the place was full. There wasn't a single empty table. I arrived at the right time because immediately after I entered a couple other groups of people walked in.

I told the girl to give me one of each flavour (today that meant 8). Until I read the other reviews I had no idea that a macaroon could be something totally different. Unlike here where it's a blob of chocolate and coconut, the french version looks like a sandwich cookie to me. The outside is slightly hard (like a shell) and the inside is gooey/chewey goodness. There was absolutly no coconut to be seen (or chocolate unless that was the flavour you wanted)

I was pleasantly surprised with the macaroons. They were pretty delicious. My choice for favourite is definitly the salted caramel (which seems to be the popular choice)

The decor of the bakey is very hip/trendy and the staff all seem very friendly. Someone behind the counter even wrote down all the flavours of the macaroons for me on a post it note and allowed me to take pics on my cellphone of the display case. I knew when I got them home I would forget the flavours.

I think Duchess is a good place to go to to satisfy any sweet cravings.I know some have commented that it is a little more pricey but I think most bakeries are more pricey than what you buy in a grocery store. Just remember that you are paying for quality ingredients and product.

I look forward to going back again and again to try all the other goodies they have.

Well I wasn't too impressed, I got one of the croissant sandwiches and it was just ok. It actually tasted pretty old, which was pretty gross.  Then I got a couple of the macaroons and a meringue. Both of those were just ok. I LOVE meringue and theirs was pretty good, if I were to ever go back to this place I would probably only get that.

This bakery does an okay job in recreating a Parisien Boulangerie-Patisserie; however, it has a long way to go before it ranks with the likes of Laduree!
For Edmonton, it is good -- and hats off to the owners for trying to bring sweet treats to the local folks.
Downside of this bakery are the service staff -- on a few occasions I have been served by a rather snooty girl who does not seem to appreciate the stock and trade  in which she works to make a living -- courtesy and genuineness should be requisites, particularly when you charge the prices of the likes of the Duchesse.

Amazing staff was very helpful! They not only knew exactly which items were gluten free but explained every ingredient and took great care to make sure my treats were safe! Macaron's are made with almond flour and all the current flavors are GF. Delicious!

Absolute favorite bakery in Edmonton. The croissants remind me of France (especially the pain-au-chocolat) and their lavender and earl-grey flavours of shortbread are so yummy. I'm interested to see what their new expanded loation looks like.

I finally made it to Duchess after reading rave review after rave review about this place. I was not disappointed. This is an upscale patisserie using only the finest ingredients. As a result, the bakings are of extremely high quality. Although the prices are higher than other bakeries, you pay for what you get.

I tried two kinds of macarons, coconut and lavender. This was my first time trying the small merangue cookies with ganache filling. Crispy, chewy, and flavourful, I am already planning my next trip to get more.

I also had the equivalent of a chocolate chip cookie. Again, it was crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside, with a buttery flavour throughout. The chocolate was plentiful as was coconut, which I did not expect in such a cookie.

There were all kinds of other pastries and cakes i wanted to try but that will have to wait for other visits.

Duchess has been swarmed with customers ever since it opened, and the baked goods (at least, some of them) often sell out by the end of the day. You can enjoy your treats at one of the few tables in the shop with a cup of fair trade coffee, or take them to go.

Get here early, and get here often. The shop is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Love it! I live and work in the neighbourhood, so I tend to go to Duchess on a fairly regualr basis. Always a great experience! My fiance bought one of the cakes for my birthday, and it was amazing. Very tasty and light, like a european cake. Would definitely recommend!

I would give the Duchess 5-stars for the macarons alone, there are always amazing new flavours to try. The store is also beautifully decorated, and all of the other baked goods are pretty heavenly too. Prices are not cheap, but somehow I don't mind for this exceptionally high level of quality.

How can you not love this place?

Born of pure passion from two ex-Edmontonians who came home to make it a more awesome place, Duchess Bake Shop lets you taste the love.

Rotating ever changing items in their glass case ensure you will never get bored, but get there early if you hope to spring your favourite delicacies.

Favourite items include the chedder pepper scones, croissants, eclairs (oh god, the eclairs!) and mini-Duchess cake. The macarons aren't half bad, either.

Each item is made with attention to detail, and then packaged and sold with attention to detail. What a beautiful addition to the city, and to 124 Street.

Duchess is definitely worth a try, or two, or three.... or more?

On my second visit, a friend and I bought 6 (ok maybe 7) items between us to share. Everything was fantastic. It's great to have a bakery like this in Edmonton, we're definitely lacking in these sorts of things. My espresso was great too. It's also pretty reasonably priced. A coffee and a treat or two for under $5. Yum.

This place is fabulous! The cakes and cookies here are to die for. I went here to meet with someone for an interview and I thought it would be a quiet place because I had never heard of it,  but it was packed! The ambiance is of a rich french bakery. I felt like I was being pampered when I was here!

They also serve lattes, cappuccinos, coffee, tea etc.

The prices are a little higher, but the treats here are to die for. Try to caramel cookies. They are wafer thin, but are packed with flavor.

Real butter croissants. Charming and tasty little macarons. Indulgent and pretty little cakes. Simple but tasty shortbread. Fresh offerings every single day. Easily the best sweets/bake shop Edmonton has to offer.

Oh my goodness. Days later I still crave one more piece of their delicious chocolate cake.

Incredibly tasty baked goods, priced on the high-end, where you'd expect something of this caliber.

I am not usually one for anything too sweet; but what they have to offer should not be missed.

Oh my goodness! This is such a nice shop! Duchess is a newer bakery on 124st that features french inspired desserts including cakes and cookies. I tried a lavender shortbread cookie while I was in here and it was pure ecstasy. The shop is small and charming with a small seating area and coffee available. I visited later on a Saturday afternoon and they were out of quite a bit, but still had a good selection of cookies and mini cakes, in particular a lemon cake that I couldn't take my eyes off, and later couldn't take my fork out of. I will be visiting here often!
