DSW Union Square has closed and is moving north up Powell Street to the corner of Powell and Post Street, across the street from Saks Fifth Avenue and the St. Francis Hotel. The entrance is on Powell right across the street from Saks. The store entrance is on street level, with the store itself on the second floor.
Will open on March 30, 2012 9am.1 Previous Review:

Definitely one of the better DSW's that always has a great selection of heels. Every brand ever, and every style ever...seriously irresistible.
BUT, came here again this past weekend and was a little disappointed at their lack of a good selection of boots...it's still cold and wintery in SF!Comment from Brandy M. of DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse 3/27/2012

Come in here from time to time to check out what steals I can find.
Bought a pair of Badgley Mischkas and love it! It's always discounted for at least a fraction of the original price.
Sometimes I'm able to find some of the newer styles from common popular brands like, Steve Madden, for a lesser cost and still new and trendy!
Good thing is that they have a point system and you get $10 back for every $200 you spend, which isn't hard to spend at all in this store.
Great customer service! -

DSW is pretty much the only place I get shoes nowadays. How could I pass just going through the new location on Post St. when I was in town - it's 4 stories of shoes! Only downside was I didn't find any cute ballet flats to take home with me - the selection was not as great as I was hoping. But they had loads and loads of heels and sandals. I did buy some cool socks and overall love this store vibe and friendly service at the register!

The secret is downstairs... Clearance section down stairs!
Decent selection of shoe, but usually hard to find sizes. Ok service, store can get a bit crazy & messy especially on the weekends... you really have to be prepared to battle the crowds & tourists if you want to come down on a weekend. I like this place for a quick run thru every now and then. And sometimes I find a real bargen.Comment from Brandy M. of DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse 3/27/2012

The new store on Powell at Post St. sucks, not a great mens selection and the one pair I found that I liked was only in size 11 and 12 and this store just opened!
Some lady employee was trying to tell me something but I don't speak Chinese and I could not understand her.
The shoes I liked were a light weight canvas with no insole priced at $59.95 and the card stated that the original store price where they came from was $65.00, so I'd save a whole $5 on a cheap pair of shoes that probably cost about $2.00 to make in China.
Think I'll go to Macy's and use the numerous discount cards they send in the mail.Comment from Brandy M. of DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse 5/7/2012

i just hit their moving sale..they are moving 2 blocks up. The entire basement is full of sexy high heels at very deep discounts, all brand names. I had the pleasure of meeting Greg Chavez, the district manager who gave me a personal tour of the new location...totally sweet and exciting. This is The Place to go for designer shoes at great prices...always check out their sales...i got away with 10 pairs of heels for around $200....very nice, sexy ,designer heels. I totally love it here! I never pay full retail for shoes and this location has an awesome clearance section. It's a whole floor big! They carry a huge variety of shoes, dressy, casual, you name it, they have it. I've bought quite a few pairs of shoes from this location and I love them all. Some wonderful steals have included Me Too, Bradley Mischka, Charles by Charles David, love them all! They all came with an awesome price tag as well ;)

I just have to write this after a nightmarish experience at Macy's. There was a shoe I wanted and the sales girl couldn't find it she helped me search. And when she couldn't find she offered me to order it online instead and basically took care of the whole process. Thanks so much! I will definitely have to come back. Not a bad store. The selection was pretty good and their clearance area in the basement isn't a mess like I recall from years ago. Store is neat and well-staffed and they are friendly. Prices aren't super cheap on must things and I had a hard time finding what I wanted, but this is a fine spot to go since Shoe Pavilion, my old go-to spot went bankrupt some years back. They are moving soon to a bigger spot up the street.

For a downtown shoe store, this one is pretty legit. There are two and a half floors, plus a somewhat hidden basement full of clearance merchandise.
This store is kept pretty tidy and organized, especially considering it's busy downtown touristy location. I've noticed that I sometimes find items online or at suburban DSW locations that I don't find here, but all and all, this one stays fairly well stocked.
The staff is friendly, the prices and sales are good, and there is a much larger selection here than you'll find anywhere else downtown. Check it out, but be sure to arrive early--this place gets packed quickly, especially on weekends. -

Whenever I do have any money to spend on shoes (which is VERY rare) I head straight to the basement where they have great shoes on clearance. Sometimes they'll have shoes on the main floor that are on sale, so keep your eye out.
Great shoes, pretty good prices (not always cheaper than what you can find elsewhere on line but still good). Staff is friendly and helpful! If ever a friend is looking for a pair of shoes and wants to go beyond Ross or Marshall's, DSW is the first place I will recommend! -

Even though I wasn't a huge fan of their old location because it was improperly ventilated, their new location is A+. Several stories, none of which are stuffy and gross. Huge selection of items. Registers on every floor. My only minor complaint is that there aren't enough seating areas to try shoes on. When I went there, the place was packed (probably because it was a Friday). The people who work there were really nice, even though I was asked several times if I was a rewards member. I understand they want your personal information, but someone shouldn't be asking you every five minutes you're there.

I'm so over suburban malls.
Keep your damn parking- I'll take Muni to the square.
Good luck to everyone sifting through your piddly selections.
And Macy's (Serramonte or Hillsdale)- you are the worst. Tripping over the mess of heels, trying to flag down someone to get your size- Its like a shoe bomb exploded and if you aren't a size 7- you are SOL.
ENOUGH!!
DSW is not without it's faults. No discount store is perfect.
Yes- I want to shove a tourist from time to time.
And of course half their shoes are hideous- but for christs sake- even Neimun Marcus doesn't perfectly tailor all of their products around your personal god damn taste. You might have more 'ugly' to sift through here- but that is half the fun of bargain shopping. You with me?
OKAY
Their selection is huge. But what is extra special is the clearance basement. You should find at least 3-4 rows in your very own size. And its organized. No need for assistance from a disgruntled overworked employee. Everything is right there in neatly stacked boxes.
WINNING. Especially in my new suede brown boots. -

I work nearby, and must say this is a lunch time favorite past time. There are 3 stories of shoes!!!
The basement is my favorite of course, clearance!!! the classic DSW way, 30%, 40% 50% off!!!! I always can find something I wan to try on and something I need to buy. This particular store carries ALOT of designer shoes! And when they go on clearance, they are rarely a typical clearance price. But i must also admit they have some great deals. This week I bought a pair of classic nikes to work out in, for the grand total of 35.00. Thye fit great, and I love them!
Last week i got a great deal on a gold pair of Michael Kors gold heels with dark brown wood soles... amazing!! They sadly were not in the basement, but they still were a steal at 99.00.
My fiance also loves all the Men's shoes. He too always finds something to try on, and typically something to buy. he most recent purchase was a grey pair of desert boots. I think they were 40% off at around 65.00.
Overall, I love DSW!!! -

Came by here on the weekend to purchase a pair of flipflops.
They have a huge variety to pick from but the sales here aren't that great. The checkout line moves pretty fast though and when asked, the cashier will also help cut off the tags to your new pair of shoes so you can wear them immediately :) -

DSW is the only place I buy shoes these days.
I look at Macy's, and I look at Nordstrom, but I buy at DSW.
$45 for Ralph Lauren, and $40 for Adidas. With tax, it's $93. Two pairs of shoes for under $100 is pretty nice!
The door guard says "Welcome to DSW" when I walk in. The cashier says "I like your shoes" as he's ringing them up. The door guard says "Have a good day" as I leave.

Tons, of shoes for women here. Good selection and variety. Seems like they have every type of shoe you can imagine. Good for the ladies but for the men, the selection becomes more limited. Don't get me wrong though, they have a good selection of mens shoes too: athletic, casual, dress.
DSW doesn't (DOES NOT) stand for "Discount Shoe Warehouse," so the prices are going to be kind of high (for the common college student)
The discounted shoes are found in the basement of this building. They will be marked with a color sticker on the box to denote the % amount discounted.
I would give this a $$ to $$$ price range. -

The store is huge! mens on the 3rd floor (if you count the 2nd floor as that little section with purses) but almost too big! they have escaladers that go up but none that go down so be prepared to take the stairs down if you go to the top floor.
top floor is stuffy as hell though, feels like a sauna in there! decent selection and price on shoes, there's a basement for clearance shoes but we were way too tired from all the walking around the store already to check it out
staff was very helpful though in a matter a few minutes we had at least 4-5 people asking us if we needed help and directed us to what we were looking for -

I have a theory: either you're a bag hag or a shoe whore. I am a shoe whore...the higher the heel, the more vibrant the color, the more unusual the print, the bigger the FM factor, the better. So when I came here yesterday to find something to wear for Friday, I looked...and looked...and looked.
Then I found the most glorious pair of shoes that will grace my feet this week. I texted a few people to ask their opinion, and being the enablers that they are, I am now the proud owner of a size 7.5 snow leopard print pointy toe pumps with what I believe are 4" heels.
Granted, because of these shoes I will have to go with a backup on Friday, but look out tonight, bishes, because these babies will be on display.Listed in: Do you know hard it is to look…

"You will eat that cat poop!"
"I will not eat cat poop!"
Yes, I feel like I am stuck in a scene from Anchorman when I'm at DSW. I'm practically being forced to eat cat poop. Cat poop being the shoes they sell here.
Look, I love shoes and I am not at all opposed to spending upwards of $100 on them, so I am not complaining about the prices. What bothers me is the absolute lack of style and class here. The shoes are tragically in-style and hip and will not be desirable to even the skankiest crack ho in 2009. If my broke ass shells out hella money on a pair of shoes, bitches best believe that I will be wearing them for years.
DSW features a dungeon of clearance shoes, handbags, and wallets. It's what I like to call a "bargain basement." But instead of bargains, you find last summer's heels with the sequins falling off, priced at reasonable numbers like $150. Yeah. Every now and again, you may run across a fairly cute pair of functional flats in the bargain basement that are reasonably priced. If you're lucky. 99% of it is cat poop.
Sorry, DSW. I can go to REAL shoe stores and find shoes that make me look less like a hooker and more like a high-paid escort, which is the look I'm generally going for.

It's larger than Loehmann's Shoes in downtown SF, though Loehmann's has better brands and a better selection. There are four levels, three of them for shoes (and one for purses). I usually have better luck finding shoes at Loehmann's but I still think DSW is worth an occasional visit, especially the bargain basement. I love that it's actually in the basement. The color coded stickers (up to 80% off at times) tell you how much the discount is.
I haven't found too many pairs of shoes here even though I've visited quite a few times. If you have better luck than I do, sign up for DSW Rewards (it's free). The upper level has athletic shoes, flats and men's shoes. The ground floor has sandals, heels and boots. In between you'll find the purses.
The store is larger with better brands (e.g., Missoni, Delman, Marc Jacobs) than the location in Daly City.Listed in: Bay Area off-price/discount…, Shoes, Pretty Shoes…

Review from Autumn K.
5 stars for the Annual 80% off sale alone. On a typical day in Union Square, I walk right past this frustratingly large wasteland of outdated styles and last seasons' castoffs. I want nothing to do with their "mark-downs" and "savings" that really don't have anything on a good sale at Nordstrom or Macy's. But once a year, DSW has their 80% off sale and I am all over that!
My shoe problem is a medical emergency. I estimate my current collection at around 200 pairs of shoes. And I'm no cheapskate when it comes to shoes. Neither is my mommy, who, thank god, financially backs my habit for the most part.
This week alone saw me with 9 new pairs! And 3 came from the 80% off sale at DSW. Think suede and leather Missoni pumps for $58. Think Givenchy slingbacks for $60. Think Steven by Steve Madden stillettos for $13!!! Yes, $13!!!!!!!!!!!
I am still an addict but at least I didn't have to sell blood or eggs to get my fix this week :) Thanks, DSW, for helping me get high without losing a shred of dignity. -

Discounted...
Some
What
The narrow aisles, mangled boxes and desperate ratio of CSR's to shoppers didn't win me over, either.
I did buy a delicious pair of Guiseppe Zanotti ballet flats in gunmetal blush with black patent toes... Very chic; very Chanel... for the low, low price of just a flinch under $400.
I rarely have buyer's remorse when it comes to shoes... But I do kind of resent this pair, though I wear them often and they go with everything. It's just hard to love them so much when I just purchased some lizard Manolo Blahnik stilettos (originally $995!) for only $160.
It was a stupid splurge, but Tim Gunn insists that ballet flats are an essential in my capsule wardrobe, so I'll do as he says and "Make it work!"
Still... I imagine it's like having two children, one of which you can't help but love more... *sigh* They're both mine, but I can't deny that I lavish attention upon one and just... take the other for granted. Maybe it's that racehorse/Clydesdale thing; I can and will take responsibility for being a bad shoe parent.
The discounted prices just didn't impress me; I've spent less money for more shoe at the end-of-season sales at Choo, et al and shopping early at Off 5th... There are still offerings from Prada, Zanotti and Gucci that start at $400 and go up to $799 - that's after the "discount".
But if you're a size 36.5 and are a shoe fiend, you never saw this review and will not poach from my usual go-to places! -

I'll sometimes open up the wallet for fun normal-people shoes. But the monkey-suit types require I wear appropriate (i.e. feet-hurting) shoes at my FiDi desk.
So, I need the blandest and most non-offensive pair of black or brown work-appropriate shoes. I need them quick and I want them cheap. Like really cheap. Like, let's spend less than 25 bucks cheap. And I want them to say NOTHING about me. Also, I have this weird thing against shoelaces.
Discount Shoe Warehouse works for me...
I spend the extra 6 bucks on Dr. Scholls foot padding, because work shoes aren't exactly the most comfortable things to wear ever.
Again, I find the bargain discount basement to be DREADFULLY warm. What is it with Union Square and their offensive attack on my perspiration glands?! I just want cheap shoes, damnit!Listed in: Look Like Meeeeee!

For as many shoes as they carry and as often as I've come here, I've never been able to find a pair of shoes I've wanted to buy.
I mean, I've tried SOOOOOOO hard! I have the money and I'm just begging for them to take it from me!
I saw these ugly Moschino shoes that were 50% off from $900 something and even after discount they were still $400! I picked one up to take a closer look at its ugliness and one of the fake bowtie pastas fell off in my hand. Oops...put it back, put it back....Nothing to see here....
Maybe some day they'll have something I'm willing to put on my feet. When that day comes, I'll re-review or some shizz. I've seriously found more shoes a the Ross across the street when I haven't been looking for shoes. I mean, I went here and then went to Ross and walked out with 3 pairs of shoes when I wasn't even trying to buy shoes there. Funny how that works.Listed in: When you have money to…

Sometimes when I am inside a DSW too long, my fashion-vision begins to warp. It's kind of like staring at one of those optical illusions where you know the lines are straight and stationary, but they appear to be curvy and moving.
This particular DSW gets 3.5 stars ---- YIELD! Proceed with caution when picking your shopping day and your shoes.
Stressful walk up Powell aside, once you get in here, it isn't much less crowded than the street outside.
They've got some REAL ugly high-end rejects here with pretty pricey tags. Be careful when assessing these shoes. They tend to be almost-but-not-quites. Upside? This store also has some amazing steals. And if you're an 8 like me (which seems to be out of stock real fast), you might find an unusual abundance of your size here in something you want.
Manolos & Dior aside, my fave part is DOWNSTAIRS! Go left & down. Try your luck-- I'd say they basement stock on average has about a 50/50 chance of pleasing me.
Minus a star for the crampy layout and the fact that this is a comparably small DSW.
Another trick--often labels like Steve Madden and Guess are not all that discounted here. Maybe try them on, but do an online search before purchase, because you might find them cheaper elsewhere, especially if they're out of season.
Final note- not much by way of service here, but not having a salesperson in my face every ten seconds is relieving when I'm busy concentrating on dodging other customers in this cramped store. -

I think fetishes are gross. Like "ewww!" kinda thing, ya know? I've never had one.
And then I walked into DSW. And realized fetishes aren't that bad. Well, only if it's a shoe fetish. Which is what I have.
::stands up::
[Nic] "Hi everyone. My name Nic, and I have a shoe fetish."
[Everyone] "Hi Nic" "Hey Nic" "Howdy Nic"
[Guy in the Back] "Where'd you get your shoes?"
[Nic, excited] "Oh these?! DSW. LOVE THEM!!!
...
Sorry....having a "movie montage" moment...
Ok....so I walk into DSW. First, I thought it was womens. Duh, should read signage that points our men's shoes are upstairs. Ok, so then I go upstairs. It's this glowing floor of shiny shoes...hello shoes....
They're all pretty reasonably priced, and some really crazy cheap. I will admit, that some of the shoes are a little out there with style, but I've found some great dress shoes, some cool athletic shoes, and some comfy leisure shoes. SWEET!
Oh, and then, I find out....the basement with the sale section. Shut. The. Hell. Up. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! SHOES THAT ARE CHEAPER THAN NORMAL!? Why is this not advertised everywhere? Like from here to China? Come on!
Ok, so there are amazingly beautiful shoes here, that are like 20 bucks - originally $140. Wow wow wow!
And the best part...they have sizes up to, like, 15. So, those people that are rejected and Nike and Adidas and Payless for having "funky big feet"...you can tell them "F-U hoes, I'm going to DSW." It's really invigorating to be able to tell someone to "F-off". :)
So, since most tall people have big feet, this definitely gets a gold star in the tall section. :D My only suggestions....friendly staff. I always feel that the staff's job here is to talk to one another, and not to the customer. I could care less if they talk to me, since I know what I want. But I've seen customers looking so confused and nervous in here, that just need a little help...Listed in: Nice Place for Tall Folks

Walking back to the car from The Starlight Room, my friend, Jill asked me what DSW was. I about slammed her head into the sidewalk. If you have read any of my old reviews, Jill is my sickly little friend... we call her Sicky McSickerson.
me: WTF do you mean, what is DSW?!?!?'
Jill: (rubbing bloodied head from being hit in the head with my handbag, in teary voice)... what do they sell?
me: JFC.... we have to go. I can't believe you are 30 years old and don't know what DSW is.
We walked in and I think she wanted me to hit her in the head again. I was too consumed with all of the pretty pretty shoes.
This is what I walked out with.... take a breath and click:

Jill asked one of the sales people if there was anything on sale. She told us about... THE BASEMENT.
They have rows and rows of shoes in THE BASEMENT. Some hits... mostly misses. But Jill scored a cute pair of shoes for 70% off.... for a final price of $17.

I have wide feet. Very wide feet. Let me tell you, it sucks to be me if you like shoes, unless you have a fetish for clown shoes.
My first time here I spoke to a sales guy here who led me to the perfect set of waffle stomper shoes right away. They were the most comfortable tennis shoes I had owned to that point (may they rest in pieces... that was years ago of course).
Now I am a card carrying DSW member. Note that I still can't wear 90% of the shoes they carry and they don't always have the style I'm looking for in my size but most manufacturers don't make the wider sizes of shoes so I don't blame them.
DSW is always my first stop on my shoe hunting expeditions. -
Review from Crystal H.
Without fail, I inevitably journey into DSW every time I visit SF. And, without fail, I will have undoubtedly not brought the right suitcase for all of the potential purchases I could justify.
For sheer selection, always having my size and some pretty good prices they get 5 stars... it's just that lack of service in the store, the crowding, the boxes in the aisles etc that force me to drop them down to a four.
Warning, if you're a girl like me who likes a deal and has an unhealthy shoe fetish, approach this store without your credit card.
