I am a big fan of this place. I used to come here for bubble tea with friends, because go for tea was always packed on weekends. Recently tried their AYCE sushi and was surprised at how good it was. Because this place is a little less known, the waitresses are very attentive to your needs. I like the ambiance of this place too, it's dark and trendy...for a AYCE place, this is very unique, as most other AYCE sushi places I have been to are usually decrepit looking.

Why a decent Japanese place has to turn AYCE?!
Dozo Sushi though has it regular a la carte and the set dinner menu and now you has a choice of AYCE.
We are a group of 16 and if one want to do AYCE ($27.99), all have no choice to opt for AYCE..... Yes $28 plus taxes and tips!
Food quality and presentation and services all went downhill when with a big group trying to order all kind of food from the menu.
I was disappointed... and the selections on the AYCE is quite boring... nothing really excited me at least.
A lot of time the food were lukewarm by the time it being served to us...
Service was so so... but I understand it is not easy to serve a big group. At least there are no automatic 10% tips charged and they accepts credit card.
Closed at 10 pm now... so we were kind of got the hint and leave.....
Dozo with the introduction of the AYCE menu becomes another one of those faceless AYCE sushi joint where quantity is more important quality!Listed in: Japanese Restaurants in the…, Stuff Myself Silly!

Review from Amy L.
Dozo Sushi & Sake Bar can be found in the plaza by Highway 7 & Commerce Valley in Richmond Hill. I've walked passed this restaurant numerous times before since it's located by Go 4 Tea. From the outside it looks really dark due to their tinted windows, but the overall colour theme for the interior are purple and burgundy. Dozo resembles a lounge and definitely wouldn't be classified as your typical Japanese restaurant design wise. This post will cover two separate visits since I never got around to writing the review for my first visit by the time I went for my second :)
The first time I came here was for dinner with a couple of friends. The place was fairly empty even during dinner time but we'd have to try their food before coming up with a conclusion about their quality ;) The staff were really friendly and polite; like really polite.
The first item to arrive was the 10 piece Sushi Platter ($12.95) which came with soup and salad as well. The texture was a little off for a few pieces of fish, but overall we did enjoy this sushi platter since there was a variety of fish available. Even though this combo only came with one soup and salad, the waitress brought us two more of each and they were complimentary. There was a reason for them but both my notes and memory failed on me so let's just say we deserved them :D
There was a seasonal special for uni (Sea urchin) so I ordered it just to see where Dozo was with the freshness. One order came with 2 pieces of uni sushi at $3.95. I really wasn't expecting much so if they turned out to taste amazing, I would be completed blown away. Sad to report that I was stuck to my chair like concrete when I was having this uni :( They were neither fresh nor sweet enough.
This platter of Kobe Sushi ($12.95) was ridiculous! I don't know which part of the cow or which country they were imported from, but they were definitely not Kobe beef. They were dry, chewy, and bland, as opposed to the marbled and melt-in-your-mouth Kobe beef. Not sure what the heck they did to this beef but they made it nearly inedible! Please don't order this if you do visit Dozo, or you may if you just want to satisfy your curiosity and find out how terrible they really are ;) (Not recommended)
The Scallop Makimono ($12.95) was probably the best out of the three things we ordered. The ingredients in this lovely roll included: shrimp tempura, scallops, avocado, cucumber, white snapper, flying roe, sesame seeds, and mayonnaise. They were generous with the toppings and we loved the combination of the ingredients. There were many levels of texture packed inside this roll which made it very enjoyable and interesting to eat.
We ordered two desserts to complete our meal - Cheesecake with Crispy Ice Cream ($6.95) and a Trio of Crème brûlée ($3.95). The cheesecake was very rich and creamy. I liked their addition of other components since it gave this dessert more colour and made it more fun to eat. The rich, dense texture of the cheesecake, the crispy panko in the ice cream, the light and fuffly whipped cream, along with the gooey chocolate sauce brought it to another dimension. As for the Crème brûlée, they're all Vanilla flavoured so that might be a little disappointing for you to hear :) These were by far the most silky smooth Crème brûlée I've ever had! I loved them because their smooth texture felt pleasant in my mouth and they didn't come off too heavy. I enjoyed these ones at Dozo more than the ones I've had at French restaurants/pâtisseries.

For my second visit, it was for a late night snack because we came at 12am :) I was craving for sushi and Dozo is opened until 2am, so we decided to try our luck and see whether they still served sushi. Unfortunately the sushi bar was closed by the time we arrived, so we ordered several appetizers and ramen instead.
I ordered Takoyaki (Octopus Balls) but the waiter brought us Grilled Squid instead. He brought us the Grilled Squid ($8.50) which was almost double the price of the Octopus Balls. He apologized and offered to have the kitchen staff redo our order but since it was almost 1am, I told him it was fine. The squid was delicious and not overly chewy so we were okay with it.
The Ramen I ordered was a Tonkatsu version, which is basically fried pork cutlet. The broth could've used more seasoning, but the noodles were cooked to the right doneness. The tonkatsu was on the greasy and soggy side, so I know not to order that next time.
Now I can't say I won't make a second visit as I've already had ;) I should also mention we received a 10% discount on our entire bill for my second visit because the waiter messed up our order. I know 10% is not a lot, but it shows that they actually do care and took action to remedy their mistake. Perhaps I'm way too used to the horrible service at Chinese operated restaurants where service is almost nonexistent that I find Dozo to be on top of their game.Listed in: Japanese Restaurants

Went here on the weekend & really enjoyed our din! We had quality service & the food came quickly. There was A LOT of food. In the end we had to pack it. We also ordered rolls which was quite silly cuz the set dinner was already insane !
We ordered the 8 course dinner. Mine was the chicken teriyaki (comes w/ all the things Jennifer K mentioned) and just under $20.
The manager Allen also gave my family a salad on the house! So nice :D
Presentation was excellent and decor/ atmosphere too. But it is surprisngly empty for such a posh looking place! I can't wait to come back again! Prob good for bday bash imho!Listed in: Asian Eats Reviews, Taste of Japan

Complete dining experience with superb service food, presentation, and unique gourmet selections.
One can order individual items from the menu, or do a set menu. We did the former.
A romantic date place for sure. Darkly lit, and just the right amount of accent lighting.

The appearance draws you in making you think you're going to have a nice dinner experience. We were visiting from Chicago and we were looking for some good sushi. I was dinning with two friends and one of them eats at McDonald's regularly so his udon was the greatest thing EVER! The rest of us didn't get what we ordered. Actually we did get it but..... we wish we didn't! I understand that this place was designed to give customers a nice dinning experience but REALLY. Nice concept, sushi with a modern twist with bad food ....doesn't work for me. I would rather eat a McDonald's before going back to this place. That really doesn't say much because I think McDonald's is pretty nasty. I don't recommend this place if you're used the good quality sushi. No wonder this place isn't busy at all. Sushi lovers beware!

Surprise this place is not busier....good food + trendy atmosphere. Ordered the Dozo Makimono and Tuna paper roll. Enjoyed both dishes ~ The interior design makes me feel like I am at a hip lounge while enjoying traditional sushi with a modern twist.
