Wow no love for this place at all!  Downtown Rideau is a hub between student ghetto, the golden triangle, the Byward Market and some long stretch before you get to Vanier.  It's a great transition from high class to riff raff all within a block.  It's so damn awesome it hurts!

Where else in town can you go from 2 of the most expensive restaurants for some excellent food, to some upper mid range clothes shops, to a few nice lounges for drinks, to walking into a place were you grip extra hard into your pockets to ensure you don't get mugged?  Then a hop skip and a jump in any direction and you're either inside a shopping mall, a canal, a long stretch to Vanier or a frickin castle!!!

Seriously it's not that bad, it's a long stretch of bus central in front of the cities largest and most central shopping mall.  If you're afraid of teens and the odd homeless person than this area could be bad but it's just high traffic.  Just be aware of your surroundings at night and hold your wallet extra tight!  This statement holds true in any area that is not part of the suburbs though.  You're always pretty safe during the day.

I have to agree that this area isn't the safest. It's not so bad during the day since there are always so many people downtown, but at night, it's probably not such a good idea to be walking around if you don't have to.

In the daytime, there are already a lot of hooligans, for a lack of a better term. By this I mean that there are so many people trying to cause trouble. Forget the homeless people asking for change, since this is always expected of any downtown core. They're not hurting anybody. It's the other people you need to worry about.

If it's bad enough during the day with such large populations of teenagers and young people, you can imagine what it's like at night. I've walked down here in the middle of the night by myself a few times, not by choice, and I've always felt awkward about it. Given, I'm a young woman, I try to be safe, and I don't exactly want to tempt fate, but with all of the liquor stores, clubs, bars, men's shelters, major bus stations, and 24-hour McDonald's.. let's just say that the mix of them all makes me a little nervous. Frankly, I just don't trust a bunch of drunk people in that kind of environment, and I think that's a pretty fair thing to say.

The Downtown Rideau district covers an area bounded by George Street to the north, King Edward to the east roughly Wilbrod to the south and the Rideau Canal to the west.

The area encompasses retailers, such as The Bay department store, which has seen better days and many independent and chain shops, as well as restaurants and taverns.

What tarnishes this area is the transit mall located between the Rideau Mall and The Bay. While it appears safe during daylight hours, use caution at night while walking around this district, as the transit mall seems to attract young toughs and other characters that appear to be looking for trouble. Even the Downtown Rideau website inquires of its visitors "Do you feel there is enough police presence visible on Rideau Street?", this says something about the area.

While it is not littered with halfway houses and liquor stores, there are many panhandlers asking for change and there is a feeling of underlying uneasiness that permeates the air.
