Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I truly feel sorry for those people who didn't have the same "five star" experience that I did at Dougiedog.
Let us address the painfully obvious first, price: This is not ikea, you will not get two dogs and a pop for $2 or whatever. And really, do you know what is actually IN those hot dogs? Dougie boasts locally purchased, all natural, grain fed and ethically treated animals. That right there doesn't scream cheap, folks and we all know it. Also, the variety of toppings (and the quantity of them placed on your 'dog) is mind-blowing! My lunch ('dog with extra cheese and pop) was just under $11. For lunch on Granville, I consider that pretty dang reasonable.
I had the Super Mario dog with extra cheese, and one of the Dougie Butterscotch Root Beers to go. My order was made fresh to order, prepped and packed before my very eyes. Being the impatient person I am, I cracked open the soda while I waited for my hot dog... Queue pupil dilation scene from Requiem for a Dream. I don't think I've put something that delicious into my digestive system in a long, LONG time. Or at least that is what I thought until I got my order back to the office and stuffed my face...
There aren't any words for how good this hotdog was! The meat was flavorful and juicy, it had that perfect first snap when you bite in. The bun was perfectly warmed and there was no shortage of cheesey, mushroomy, jalapeno-y topping goodness. Dougie's dog was possibly one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth, take that as you will!
The other thing that pushed this place through the pearly gates of 5 stardom: Dougie himself! I stopped by during the lunch rush and he was outstanding. Clearly under significant pressure, he was still extremely pleasant and even took a few minutes to shoot the breeze with me about his stint on Dragons Den. He was taking orders, cooking, cleaning the dining area, the whole nine yards with only one other kitchen helper! And he did it all with a great attitude and a smile. Now THAT is how you run a great business!
If you want a cheap hotdog on a steamed bun with some stale grated cheese melted on top, go to Orange Julias.

Lot's of places to grab a dog. I wasn't feeling the quality of the hotdog for the price.
Rather eat around the corner or from the wide selection of carts scattered around Vancouver these days.
Dinky Dawgs (whistler) + Japadog for the WIN! -

Errrrrybody seems to be hatin' on Dougie and his dogs, why you hatin'? People have said the dogs taste fake, plastic-y, etc when they are actually quite the opposite. Dougiedog boasts all natural dogs, preservative and hormone free, with natural casings. The dogs you get on the street are the fake ones full of junk, you got duped.
Dougie cooks a mean ween, and his selection of root beer is pretty extensive and delicious. I have only been once but I have been told by others it's consistently good. Also, there was macaroni and cheese on my dog, AND bacon. Bacon Mac and Cheese!
Come on guys, try another weiner, know I will.

I came to Dougie Dog for lunch with some colleagues and tried out Mom's Turkey Dog. It had turkey sausage, grey poupon mustard, green onions and cranberry sauce. It had a lot of green onions in it which was not so much for my liking.
The turkey dog was fine but I think that it is a bit pricey for a hot dog ($6.95 + tax).
The ambiance is fun and casual and the serving staff is friendly. However, I do not find much value in the food in terms of price so I will unlikely return to this place. -

I was curious after seeing it on Dragon's Den so I had to check it out. Nice looking place and very friendly staff. I had the Coney Island Dog. It's like a chili dog and very delicious, no doubt, but it is pretty expensive there so that may be something that may deter me from coming more often. They have a huge variety of different dogs for your taste, so everyone should find something they like. The dogs were good, the yam fries were so-so.

Can't remember the name of the dog I got but it was infused with whiskey and topped with coleslaw and hot banana peppers. I still think the bun is too big.
We shared a Poutine but it could use a bit more cheese curds and gravy.
Craving for beer we ate and left to our next destination.
That whiskey infused dog was damn good!

After the Canuck's game let out last night I was in desperate drunken need for a veggie dog...
Not wanting to stand in a 20 person line up to get a hot dog at a street cart me and my friend fought our way through the sea of people to make our way to Dougiedog.
The guy/owner at the counter is way too enthusiastic about his dogs, fortunately for him I was drunk cause otherwise I would've thought he was pretty ridiculous.
I got the Downward Dog which has spinach, avocado, onions and feta which I opted out of. Overall it was pretty damn good!
This store has a cheese factor to it that I kinda dig and the phallic hot dog statue amuses me...I will get getting my drunk dog fixes from here in the future! -

DougieDog was a place I had incredibly high hopes for - maybe more than I should have.
I was incredibly stoked to hear that I could find a place here (since moving from NYC) that serves natural-casing hot dogs... once you've developed a taste for them, it's very hard to go back to anything else.
The hot dog itself? Everything I hoped for. Good quality meat, with that crisp bite that can't be faked.
The "fancy" dogs that I ordered? Meh. The cheese wasn't melted, the toppings really drowned out what should have been the focus, the wiener.
I think I'll give them another shot, though - this time, though, I'll ask for just a wiener, bun, ketchup and mustard. Maybe some sauerkraut.
It's no Gray's Papaya or Papaya King, but it saves me a very long plane ride! :) -

Dougie Dog is probably the best thing to happen to anyone that lives downtown and frequents the late night scene, why? Because the deliver until like 5 or 6am.
Not only do the deliver...their dogs are a drunk persons dream. Charlie Mac dog (An all beef hot dog, topped with bacon and their own mac and cheese) anyone?
As extensive is their hot dog menu, they just as a long list of about 20 types of root beer to match, including their new Dougie Dog root beer, which may be the best thing to hit my lips in liquid form (non alcoholic of course)...probably ever.
Don't skip on the combo's either a huge side of mac and cheese or the best yam fries I have ever eaten, with their own coleslaw (which I am actually not a huge fan of), and a root beer!
For vegan's, they boil all their vegan dogs separately from the meat and they can dress them like any dog you wish.
Don't miss the trailer park dog! -

A little bit pricey for a hot dog, but on the other hand, there really aren't a lot of other places that offer the sheer variety of specialty hot dogs and the amazing root beer selection.

After drinking a few beers at a downtown bar and walking down the street and seeing some pretty terrible looking street pizza, I was pretty psyched to find a hot dog place that serves cleverly titled (i.e. The Super Mario) natural casing hot dogs. After receiving my dog I couldn't have been much more disappointed by the quality. I really didn't understand why the dog was making me feel sick eating it. There was an unauthentic plastic feel to what I was eating. I wouldn't go back, and ended up having the crappy street pizza the next day and at least found that option edible.

I have visited here a couple times and don't get me wrong nothing is better than a trashy hot dog on a beach day but the hot dogs dont live up to the hype. They were decent...but nothing special. I would much rather have a japadog for a good hot dog.
The reason I gave this place 3 stars was the AMAZING Root Beer....now that was awesome!!!!!!!!! They sweeten it with Butterscotch...geeze it was amazing.
The owner frequents the place and is super friendly. I wish the hot dogs were better because I would like to spend more time and money there...I just can't warrant it. -

I am not sure where you can go wrong with ground up and highly processed end bit and "nasty" parts of a pig, filled with spices, and molded in to tubular shape, for superior consumption possibilities. Believe me, I believe in the greatness of the hotdog. But if you were considering finding out, 1013 Granville is the spot.
The dogs themselves are gross, and just as plastic and cold as the company seems. Yes, I just compared a company to a crappy hot dog. And I havent been personally wrong by them in any way, except Ive been absurdly disappointed both times Ive eaten there. Expensive-ish for the quality, I get it its a hotdog.. but dont make me feel like an idiot for thinking it could be better than a vendors at English Bay. -

i have walked by this place several times but since i am not a giant hot dog fan always kept walking ... but then i found out they delivered !!! so i ordered in some poutine (not bad, not backwoods quebec good, but not bad), a hot dog with guacamole, cheese and bacon which i have to say was quite tasty, topped off with the butterscotch root beer which was deluxe and delish ... i did find it a titch expensive for a hot dog and fries and a pop but whatever, everything is expensive these days ... i will definitely order in again, i want to try the yam fries ...

OK, I know people think... it's JUST A HOT DOG... here it's not!!! When Dougie is in the house workin the counter it's an experience!
This is a carnivor delight on all accounts.
Tonight I kept it simple with the Charlie Mac dog,(yes!! Mac n cheese made fresh with a slice of bacon on a hot dog)
My favorite so far has been the Super Mario though, with jalepeno cheese, mushrooms n ketchup on a cheese dog. Standard soda offering is Rootbeer, no colas or other carbonated items to taint the experience here.
I've tried japadog, and I wasn't swayed.. I love the north american versions the best... if you want an experience, and a tasty, almost melt in your mouth dog, come here.
I only give him 4 stars, because of the tropical dog offering.
Word of caution to folks about the tropical dog.. personally think it should be taken off the menu, or at least people should be advised that the condiments are all served cold, and the pinapple is canned, not fresh.
The combo of toppings sounds intriguing, but doesn't go over very well when it's cold.Listed in: Fav Places to nosh

This is a request to all fellow yelpers out there: DO NOT GO HERE! The place is a joke; point blank. As for the owner and the catatonic counter attendant they are even bigger jokes.
I have never been so adament about avoiding this place at all costs!
The food is terrible; I had a tropical dog and they gave me a hotdog, cold with pulverised mango, cilantro and pineapple on it. If you ever seen anyone puke, it much resembles that.
In addition it will cost you 7$ minimum for a low quality joke of a dog. Never again. -
Review from Angela W.
It's a bit priced on the higher side for some hot dogs but there is no preservatives so that's a plus!
Food- I ordered the Krit Dawg which is a hot dog with bacon wrapped around and green onions and pineapples sprinkled on top. It was definitely a creative way that ultimately had an interesting good flavor. The pineapples added a nice sweetness while the green onions added a nice kick. MMM MM Good. Delicious. This place is open late, so you definitely get your crowd of people after the clubs/lounges.
Service- Food is made really fast. The owner is pretty nice. -

$9.92 for a hot dog and root beer!
The signature Dougie Dog is a European style wiener in an extra long white bun with melted cheese, a couple slices of pastrami, Dijon and horseradish.
Unfortunately, my Virgil's Root Beer won the gold medal on this night.
After waiting 10 minutes and seeing at least one other guy get his dog before me (I ordered first!) I started getting that dreaded Meh feeling.
The wall is covered in photos of celebrities enjoying their Dougie's. I guess a picture of Bill Cosby in LA is supposed to give them street cred in Vancouver?
But my biggest beef with Dougie is that I could have had my dog served in a whole wheat bun instead. I only figured this out when I heard the "chef" yell out that they had run out of buns and that the rest of the waiting customers were stuck with whole wheat.
Dougie, not all customers want to eat plain white Wonderbreadish buns. Put this on the menu somewhere as an option!
It wasn't the worst hot dog in Vancouver, but it definitely wouldn't make it to the podium any time soon. -
Review from Louise G.
Haven't worshipped yet at Our Lady of the Japadog, but I was passing by and thought I'd check out the controversy.
Dog ideas are great: tried the Dougie Dog and was seriously enthralled by the whole concept. Horse radish as a standard topping is like a V12 as standard on a car: for purists only. Presentation and delivery was nice, though not spectacular.
Ordered a cola, and got offered root beer; a list of root beers. So, root beer with the dog. While I ate the dog and root beer, I realized that the controversy is all about vision.
Japadog has a vision - and Dougie has a vision. Dougie's vision is pure: an American hot dog with root beer on the side. Nothing but...
It's like the Catholic church, which makes you eat those stale wafers and drink that plonky wine: it's tradition; it's pure.
Sure, you can get all Reformation on the dogs - tart them up with UnAmerican toppings; wash them down with a selection of alien brews. But sometimes you just need to honour the purity.
Good dogs; great vision. I'd go there again -
Review from Dustin P.
Yeah, it's just a hog dog. Yeah, it's pretty expensive (for a hot dog). Yeah, I was only in Vancouver for 4 days. Yeah, I had three meals here.
Not sure why. Maybe it was the location. Maybe it was the extensive menu.
I really enjoyed the "Downward Dog" and the fact that I could take any of the creations and make it into a vegetarian treat. I was quite disappointed with the combo meal. I wasn't given the cole-slaw as promised and the mac and cheese was super bland. However, I didn't complain because Dougie made me the hot dog and I felt it was an honor to have been served by him. In his restaurant.
I also arrived on another visit late in the evening and was invited to enjoy a "Root Beer Schnapps" (a $5 premium over the root beer cost) which was a great nightcap to an already alcholic evening. This isn't on the menu...
Great selection of root beers if you are into that as well!
Before leaving Van I checked out Japadog and enjoyed that a lot more...but Dougie accepts credit cards and I was low on CAD! -
Review from J.P. S.
It was USA vs CAN part 1. Every bar and restaurant in the city was PACKED and there was nowhere to eat. I walked all over both Yaletown and Granville before I found this place. As I walked in, I thought that I would have to "settle" for a hot dog. I was thinking at least it seemed better than a vendor.
However, I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. There was chill music playing, no tv / bar (a plus at that moment), not too much of a crowd, and lots of selection of root beer.
I had the Coney Island Dog combo with Mac & Cheese and a Stewart's root beer. I thought it was a darn good combination. Best though was the mac and cheese (with real cheese sprinkled on top).
They were also super friendly there (though so were many in Vancouver) and came by to check how everything was at one point.
Note though that this is not really best as a "sit-down" location, though there are some seats along the sides. Probably not great for groups either. But if you are either short on time, or just want a convenient location to take a break and grab a dog, then it may fit the bill. -

Every time I go downtown, I am COMPELLED to stop at Dougie Dog. Dougieluv is fun, the vision in general is great, the product is all natural and tastes great. The Chili dog is where it's at. The chili is thick and flavourful, and doesnt run down your face, which is good, cause the seating arrangements arent the best for messy food. It could easily wind up in your lap. The rootbeer pairings are a great idea. Very old school and fun. They have a TON of really great options. My favourite is the Bulldog. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area!

Background: Me like hot dog. Just tucked in the Granville strip where Kuroshio Sushi used to be, I stopped by here on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Food: There's a fairly wide selection of internationally themed dogs. The footlong wieners are boiled and come with various meat and veggie toppings. I ordered a Seoul Dog, which was a footlong dog topped with kimchi, horseradish, and bulgogi (marinated beef). The dog was juicy and met my expectations. Washed it down with a root beer from their extensive collection.
Ambiance: Takeout. There's room for a standing crowd.
Service: Met the man Dougie himself who was quite personable and checked on each customer as I was eating to see that the experience was good.
Pricepoint: A bit high-end at $6-7 per dog. But you'd be paying similar to eat at Japadog anyway.
Overall: This place cures the munchies, and the quality is in line with the rest of fastfood Granville - average but hits the spot. The root beer idea is cute. I'd go here again.Listed in: Good greasy crap

* Many better options out there *
Things I like when I get a hotdog, and how Dougie did it:
1) HOT dog. I like it to be well cooked (be it grilled or boiled) and heated thoroughly throughout. Dougie took about 10 minutes to get me a lukewarm dog. Not acceptable. Period.
2) Good topping choices. Yes, we have the infamous Japa Dog with its variety of Japanese style toppings as a comparison locally. That is a hard thing to live up to. Dougie has a large variety of dogs on the menu including Chicago style, NY Style, and something they call a Kosher dog. The Kosher dog was the most curious. That conjures up an image for me of a frank at a NY deli, which would be done on a griddle and topped with sauerkraut and deli mustard. But it comes here with banana peppers? WTF?!?!?!?! They do have NY style with sauerkraut and spicy mustard. So I'm just a bit confused with their naming of the dogs I suppose. They also have a Tokyo dog which is a clear ripoff of Japa Dog's specialty. Since there aren't a lot of options for Chicago dogs in Vancouver I opted for that. There was no noticeable celery salt at all, and the whole set of toppings just didn't come together in the way they should for a good Chicago dog. So while on paper there is a good selection, I question some of the combination choices and the execution of those options.
3) Good value. Hotdogs are a quick item and should be value priced. Over $7 for a lukewarm hotdog with mediocre toppings just doesn't cut it.
To make things worse, when the guy behind the counter asked me if I liked my dog I answered honestly and said, "To be honest it isn't hot enough. The dog is lukewarm." Instead of trying to fix it he made an excuse of, "For the Chicago dog we heat each dog individually - perhaps we didn't heat it long enough." Um....Ok. And?!?!?!
Fail!
P.S. And as Peter reminded me - they don't even have a spamdog on the menu!?!?!?! That was quite surprising considering everything I've read about them!Listed in: Fool me once, shame on you.…

At Dougiedog, I ordered the L.a. Mexicana, which was described as a "fiesta of flavors" and included guacamole, bacon, jalapeno and cheddar cheese. I love me some guacamole and I love me some bacon so this should have been a home-run except ... this hot dog just didn't really hit the spot. The bacon wasn't crispy, the jalapenos didn't blend well with other ingredients and overall it was not the burst of flavor I was expecting. I guess I'm just too reminiscent of the bacon chili dog I got at 2am at Pink's in LA. Now that's good stuff. Also, if you're going to get root beer stick with the original. The butterscotch root beer was a little odd for my taste.

had the dougie dog and the root beer that's on tap. it was probably that they put too much ice in, but i thought the root beer was watered down. next time i'm just going to try one of the bottled ones.
the hot dog itself was ok. but didn't seem like it was worth the price i paid. dougie dog + root beer (medium size if that) came to $9. dog was boiled, if you didn't know. i could sort of tell that the wiener was of better quality than the usual store bought ones, but it seemed to lack flavour something.
they really score points on variety. 20 different rootbeers and i think the same amount of hot dogs. -

Went over to the Fascist hot dog place today. You know, the one where supposedly they posted up their own Yelp reviews and spam people on Twitter who go to Japadog to try to get them to go over to their place. I just finished work, 10:45p, and was hungry, and I remembered this place, so I wandered over. It was located where the curiously barren sushi place used to be. It was Sunday night, at it was empty. The counterperson reccomended a few things, and I went for the Super Mario, which was a jalapeno cheese dog with ketchup, mushrooms and more cheese. Only I replaced the ketchup with mayo. He didn't have any problem with that, and so I waited for it to come. It took about 5 minutes, and when I got it, I was totally surprised by the results. A huge european hot dog, in a big ol bun, pretty loaded with the ingredients asked for. I think with the price you're paying (7 dollars) it's well worth the money. The hot dog itself was VERY yummy, and uh, filling, After I finished it off on my way home, I was convinced I'd be making a return visit real soon. Maybe not the best marketing department in the world, but the product makes up for it..
