I can't belive there are no reviews for Donovans!
Here's the low-down on this joint:
Donovans is one of Calgary's legendary underground hidden trasures!! BUT, there are a few things I will let the Donovan's newby in on. I have been a semi-regular at Donovans for YEARS so trust me on this stuff ok!
FIRST OFF, The Pizza is easily in the top 5 I've had in the world. It's a homemade multigrain crust, with the exact amount of cheese you request. The toppings are plentiful and legit. As a semi-regular, I have hung out in the kitchen with the owner while he chops fresh peppers, mushrooms etc. If you order bacon, the guy goes and cooks a pund of real bacon then chops it up. That level. Beyond rad. Donovans has always received a 100% A+ on the health inspections (go check yourself) which is RAD because your "Earls" and the like often fail but are prettier around the edges. This place is owner operated, and he gives a shit.
There is ONLY Canadian on draft, and then your usual bottles available as well as box wine and shooters of JD. All beverages are ice cold, and well poured. The best part, is the drinks at Donovans are affordable too. Its all good. Plus there's a jukebox with standard classic rock selections to enjoy. No VLTs, NO pool tables, NO big screens here, OK.
NOW here's what the Donovans virgins need to know: This joint, while I HIGHLY recommend it, is pretty much a dive bar. SO this means the following for those of you who are not dive-bar veterans: At DONOVANS the following apply::
-There WILL be regulars who range from friendly and harmless, to "talk your ear off", to scary and dirty, to looking for a fight. Some of the lower calibre regulars or semi-regulars may hit on your girlfriend when you go take a piss, or make off-colour remarks to you or her right to your face. There are also a lot of decent people you might become friends with.
-From time to time there may be an "off duty" biker at Donovans. I dont mean the guy who bought a Sportster and matching jacket 3 months ago. I mean the guy who used to and / or still is a member of an organised crime organisation. Dont be affraid of them, just dont be stupid and generally speaking you will be fine OK?
-Often, Donovan's is staffed by only one person. This means if somebody orders a pizza, there will be no bar service while they go make it (up to 10 or 15 minutes). SO if you see someone order food, run up to the bar and grab another jug before its too late!
-For whatever reason, Donovan's closes EARLY, like 10 or 11pm even on friday and saturday.
-NO takeout food. Dont think youre gonna get the rad pizza but outmanoeuvre the dive bar experience hah hah! Leftovers MAY be wrapped in tin foil upon request.
ALL in all, hit this joint up and experience some SUPER RAD pizza, cheap well done drinks, and the characters who frequent this place!!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
