Umpteen visits later, Donald's still wows me with products I can't get anywhere else in New West: India Life-brand naans and frozen Indian food products, the best butter chicken spice mix I've ever found, organic breads from local baking gods A Bread Affair (the garlic and Parmesan loaf is heavenly, even if it does cost 5.99), the aforementioned Green & Black's chocolate bars, including the rare white chocolate variety made with vanilla beans, Peanut Butter Puffins cereal, and organic beauty products too.

The produce section isn't my favourite in town, but it'll do in a pinch, Donald's being the most convenient grocery story I can get to on a bike (no major hills, and there is a bike rack right in front now). And with all the other places opening up in the River Market, Donald's is in the hub of New West's destination for food lovers.

They always have great specials; I'm not quite sure if I'm saving money or being tempted to spend more because of the good deals. In any case, my overflowing basket of healthy goodies is invariably checked out by a nice cashier. I actually like giving them money.

I love the natural foods selection. There are plenty of gluten and casein free options.

Unlike other speciality shops you don't pay double here. The prices are very affordable. They are competitive with regular supermarket prices which is pleasantly surprising,

I drive forty minutes to get here. I usually go once a week. It's located on the New West Quay so I enjoy a leisurely walk along the river with my son and then pick up my groceries. The line ups are never ridiculously long.  Who knew grocery shopping could be so enjoyable?

I always forget to get my parking validated at the market.  Hopefully you'll remember.

Ahhhhhh Christine you beat me to it lol!

This weekend was the opening of Donald's Market in the River Market, formally known as The Westminster Quay.  I was super excited about the opening as I have been dying to be able to buy fresh produce at a reasonable price close to home.  As Christine says the opening was a bit of a CF but that wasn't the stores fault, just most of us gazing at the shop in wonder.

The store does seem a little small and limited in selection but that's ok with me as it has everything I like and a little bit more.  When I was explaining the store to my fiance I was saying that it's a selected mix of Choices and Alive without the crazy arsed mark up.  Needless to say I was in healthy, natural and organic food heaven.  The fiance likes it because they have items that can be hard to find in your regular grocery store.  I was also super impressed that the prices rival those of IGA across the way, as in they are better.  At least what I could see.

I can't wait for summer when the whole market is open and the Quay is hustling and bustling again.  I have missed that and I think Donald's is paving the way to the fresh new look of New West.

I just moved here from the east side of Vancouver, where I was quite attached to the local Donald's Market.

I love this store.  Great selection of organic and natural products, good bakery selection - breads from Uprising Bakery! my fave, nice big deli, fresh free range chicken, lots of produce with a decent organic selection, nicely laid out with what I found to be a good ambiance, great little trolleys that stack their shopping baskets perfectly, and the people are sweet. Also, I find that the prices are on average 10 to 30% cheaper than IGA and certainly Whole Foods (I hate Whole Foods).  Overall the variety is better, too.  As it is an Asian market, there are lots of different spices and noodles and hot sauces.  Good olive oils too.  They even have Mario's Gelato, Avalon Milk, and Uprising Breads!

How cool is that?  And Avalon Milk in glass bottles.

This will be my weekly destination.  Thank you for being there, Donald's Market.

We were stunned by the honey selection, alone.  My partner has lived in Toronto & New York, and for one of the first times ever, he was impressed by what New West had to offer!
Prices are excellent, but you've got to know what is worth it and what is not.  Case in point: Colavita olive oil is $8.95 for the large size, while I paid $11.95 just a few weeks ago at the Mediterranean deli on Commercial for the same thing.  But the prices on salsas are expensive (well, compared to across the border, I'm spoiled by cheap Trader Joe's salsa).  The produce & bread section is decent, but the processed food section is really what is always awe-inspiring at Donald's.
Went on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't busy at all.

Quite a find at the quay.  Hadn't been to the quay for a few years.  What the heck happened to the  quay, not much there anymore.  Donald's was a great surprise - lots of different items and natural/organic selection very good. I'll go back for this store alone.
