Ottawa is an expensive city, especially in the frou frou areas - the Glebe, Byward Market, etc. When my wife and I first moved here, we had to buy all the start-up items (cheese grater, dish rack, pasta strainer, etc.). We were literally horrified when we saw how expensive these items could be in big stores (a cheese grater for $7? Really??). Happily we found Dollar It and were able to stock up on the essentials, without breaking the bank. And, unlike many "dollar" stores where most of the items are well over a dollar, Dollar It sells only items priced at a dollar. Now, that does mean that quality may have to take a back seat. My son told me he found a tennis ball in the toy section that was a dollar, but did not really bounce. So, caveat emptor when shopping at Dollar It, but at least you won't go broke!
