I was totally ecstatic when I bought some bulk flours for under 10 dollars! I was in search for some spelt and unbleached white flour, and I thought I would check out Dollar Grocers. Some of the conventional supermarkets DO sell these flours, but they're too expensive for my taste. But Dollar solved my problems! I'm in love with their selection of 'exotic' gluten-free flours and abundant pastas.
The place is far from looking like an organized and spotless Safeway, but that's OK. Actually, this store reminds me of a cheaper and less-cranky Famous Foods. (Sorry, I love Famous Foods but that place is HELLA expensive... And the staff are always frazzled.) -

Dollar Grocers has been my preferred stop for basics like milk and eggs for years now. Their prices are decent, and they've got a great selection of organic / free-range / etc choices. There are not nearly enough rad, eclectic markets in this city, so I've always kept coming here even if there are closer options.
Strengths:
- Selection of healthy choices
- Selection of harder-to-find food items
- Bulk section
- Friendly staff
Needs improvement:
- The deli is pretty ghetto
- There's often expired stuff in the coolers, so take an extra peek at which bottle/tub you choose -

Dollar Grocers is one of my favourite grocery stores to stop at on my way home from work. The people that work here are always SO nice, and they consistently have the best prices in the neighbourhood on staples like soy milk and yogurt. You can also get some amazing deals on produce, although granted, the quality can be a little questionable at times.
Overall, Dollar Grocers is a great addition to the Drive, and its selection is very good for those with meat or dairy-free diets. -

Dollar is my grocery store of choice, and has been for years. It takes a little bit of getting used to, certainly, but it's a colourful, interesting, social experience. This place is nothing fancy, but the corners cut in layout and size show in the incredible variety of products available for great low prices. Sure, sometimes the produce is a little sad-looking, but it's not impossible, and besides - sanitary sterile grocery stores are kind of freaky, don't you think?
After five years of shopping at Dollar Grocery I can finally find anything I need in the store without wandering aimlessly, but at first you will find it a bit guess-and-check. Also, navigating through the aisles can be a bit intimidating if the store is full... but everyone's in the same boat so just smile and wait your turn to pass through some of the bottlenecks, and before you know if you'll feel like part of a community.
Best deals at Dollar:
- Tetra-paks of coconut milk, 2 for $5
- Soy, almond, and rice milk, 2 for $4
- Bulk spices
- Great selection of gluten-free bulk pastas
- Best price on Earth Balance margarine in town at $4.99
I refuse to buy any of those things at any other store. It's just too painful to spend $5.99 for a tub of EB when I know how much it costs at Dollar.
Long live Quoc! If you're lucky, maybe you can buy a reusable grocery bag with his face on it! (They sell out fast.)Listed in: Grocery Shop

I am very glad that my boyfriend has moved east. Sure, he's further from my apartment now, but he lives in such a great neighbourhood! With cheap grocery stores!
We went to Dollar Grocers on Saturday to pick up some stuff for dinner. I was amazed by the sheer number of gluten-free options (well marked! lots of signs!), cheap non-dairy milk, bulk spices, and general selection and price.
Good job, Dollar Grocers. We'll be back.Listed in: Great eats, gluten-free, The necessaries

So wanted to give this place 5 stars for the awesome prices alone, but I couldn't:
- Some of the produce wasn't very high quality including some old starting to rot bags of some kind of green vegetable inside.
- The first time I came the cashier or scanner didn't correctly adjust the prices of any of the items that I bought where a sign at the item had "Buy 2 for xxx" prices (this has not occurred on subsequent visits)
In time I may forget the price offense. The prices are still 75% or less of places like IGA or save-on AND they have better natural foods selections. -

Quoc is truly the avocado and Luna and Larry's coconut "ice cream" king. This place is cozy, homey and friendly. I really love the little touches, like passing out watermelon on hot days and little signs about befriending orphan bananas. Sure, the odd item is a bit past its prime, but they honour returns and love their regulars.

-Produce that looks good AND is cheap.
-A good selection of meat alternatives (tofu, seitan, mock meats, tempeh) for less than other shops on the Drive.
-Smiling, friendly, helpful staff.
-Bulk spices and other goods. Bulk spices ROCK!!!
-Tea for $1.70 box! Awesome!
I live at the north end of Commercial, but I'll walk the 25 minutes to Dollar Grocers to pick things up, passing at least 5 other grocery stores on the way. Plus there's usually some eye candy sitting in the window at JJ Bean next door to make the trip extra worth it. ;-) -

The name says it all...Dollar Grocers. Some of the bet deals on food around. I get my Vita-soy milk there cause it's 2 for $4 bucks. Sweet.
Everything I need except maybe 2 or 3 things and that's really my fault cause I haven't asked Quoc to stock them.
Ok, so the produce can be questionable but more often than not I find what I need and it's fresh.
What I love (though I doubt it has anything to with the shop) is Vancouver's first bike corral out front so there's always tons of parking for us 2-wheelers.
Mirka's awesome too! -

Cheap groceries come complete with a side of Kegel exercises.
Dollar Grocers gets my dollars bc they're cheap, offer a diverse selection:
* Asian greens? check.
* Freshly sliced deli meats? check.
* Bulk bin spices and dry-goods? check.
* Latino groceries? check.
and stay open later than most other small grocers on the Drive (they close @ 9pm).
The service is friendly and helpful but go with a TONNE of patience as speed and efficiency are not two practices in effect here. Seriously. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Or take the time to work those kegel muscles. -

Fresh produce; lovely fruits and vegetables.
Deli meats, cheeses, dry and tinned goods. Quite a nice selection of groceries.
You can find everything you want at this little grocery, even some of the harder to find items.Listed in: There and Back Again

There are SO many of these wonderful independent grocery outlets on The Drive that I find myself standing in front of one of them saying... "now which one is this one? the one with the bulk bins, the one that has the Gluten Free noodles and cereals? Wait, maybe it's the one that ..... Yes that's this one!
You have to make a mental list of where you can find the foods you like and which one's have the best quality for the price.
I wonder how long does it take to master this? We've been here a year and haven't got it down yet.
Well, at Dollar Grocers you WILL find bulk foods, and spices, and a fresh meats counter, and a (foreign) foods section or two, great produce, and all your basic needs. But the name.... what's up with that name?Listed in: More bag for your grocery…

Once again, another store that's practically in my backyard. I don't know why I usually cross the road and go to Donald's Market instead, maybe it's Dollar's yellow price stickers that put me off, but when I do shop at Dollar I usually get what I need for pretty cheap. Last night's dinner cost me $7.49... and there's leftovers.

I agree with the other review here- very friendly staff, quick lines, convenient store, and cheap produce.
The last few times I've been out go get a plain old green bell pepper- I've had some issues. That is at Marketplace and Save-On, the peppers seems pretty beat up and the skin is dull with no sheen. However, at Dollar Grocers I found an abundance of shiny fresh bell peppers. They were somewhat on the small side- but I can work with that. I'd rather get 2 of these awesome peppers, then settle on a dinky one from the other stores.
Also- they have other random items you need. Like- potato chips! This is definitely an easy place to swing in to get the items you need for dinner. -

This store is owned by two brothers. The tall one appears to be honest, but the short one IMO is dishonest.
The short one consistently short-changes me at the register.
He also told me several "tall tales" about his competitors on The Drive (nickname for Commercial Drive) that I learned later to be untrue. In other words, he defames his competitors - the other grocers in his area.
His produce are also what I opine to be "second rate" or "seconds" yet he prices them high, as if they were "first class" produce. -

Dollar isn't super close to where I live, so I tend not to buy most of my groceries here. That said, they have a magnificent selection of non-dairy milks, a great bulk section, and, really, a fantastic assortment of just about everything you might want. I like their policy of selling actual organic milk affordably, and generally just love the feel of the place. How many stores have primarily fair trade chocolate at the till?

i used to work right next door to dollar grocery... and have shopped there for a long time and still do... in the same block as JJBean on Commercial Drive... right next door to ccec credit union - http://www.ccec.bc.ca
definitely the place for natual food products at decent fair low prices compared to health food stores... great for organic sundries, spices, great produce (incl some organic) and a very diverse bulk foods section... including a deli...
highly recommended... -

Apparently I'm the only one that questions the sanitation standards in this store? The bulk containers in particular look like they rarely get cleaned. My personal policy is to only buy sealed containers of things from this store... but yes, they have a good selection of affordable good brands.

This is one of Commercial Drive's best examples of inexpensive and quality groceries. Come here for cheap fruit and vegetables, organic groceries, and staples of Asian cooking. You might need to pick through the fruit outside to find something that's not overly ripe, but overall this place is great, and the people who work there are friendly.
