Review from Laurel P.
This is the coolest service! For about $70, DNA My Dog will send you a kit containing a form and a pair of cheek swabs which you send back to them to analyze to test what breeds your loveable mutt is made up of.
We had always wondered what kind of dog our rescue mutt was and jumped at the chance to find out when we discovered this company. My dad let them know that he was on his last legs and they offered to rush deliver the test at no extra charge. When the first kit failed (we didn't get enough DNA on the swab) they again rushed us a new kit.
Other reviewers have mentioned that on the form they ask you to "guess" what breed your dog is. We were also skeptical about that, but decided to fill it in anyway. We had always thought he was a terrier but it turns out he didn't have any terrier DNA in him at all! Not entirely believing the results, we contacted customer services and were given a very detailed explanation about the testing process, and our dog in particular.
Overall we are extremely pleased with the value of the DNA test as well as the customer service we received from the company. I highly recommend DNA My Dog to anyone who is curious about their pet's background. -

I am very happy with the service (i.e., the DNA test), but am a little less satisfied with their customer service (which I will get to).
Basically you send them money by PayPal or give them your credit card number and a couple of days later you get a package with these long q-tips that you rub against the inside of your dog's cheeks, which you send back with a form. I was a bit put off by the form because it asks what breed you think your dog is, my feeling is that I am paying you to tell me blind, not fudge the result based on what I wrote, so I left that blank. I also didn't provide a picture for his certificate, again because I didn't want to taint the results.
In the end (without any information on my dog) it came back that he was an Australian Shepherd, which is what we thought, but because we didn't get him from a breeder we were interested in whether he was a mix at all (he's not). So I am very impressed with the actual DNA testing and highly recommend it at $75 (including tax and shipping).
They claim the test takes less than two weeks, which is a joke. I waited almost 6 before I got the result and I live in the same city as the company. They were not very prompt at responding to my e-mail inquiry about this delay either. It's also frustrating to pay a shipping charge when everything comes by regular mail. These are the only reasons I am giving 4 rather than 5 stars, the actual testing is a 5 star service.Listed in: Dog Spots
