For the people who like to shop at Divine, Value Village is their Holt Renfrew. There's all this amazing vintage stuff and a line of very cool recycled or reworked clothing. It's the marriage of old vintage items with new materials.
House of Virtue is one of the labels they sell. There are dresses made of old sweats and polyester shirts. Old jackets, ski sweaters, vintage leather, and vintage t-shirts are re-envisioned and combined to make new trendy creations. Talk about breathing new life and value into old discards. Fashions range from about $65 to over $300.
The looks overall are hip and modern, urban and tendy, with off-centered zippers, bigger sweater collars, quirky combos that somehow work together, dropped skirts and tighter fits. It's a load of fun to sift through the racks and find that perfect piece that speaks to you. -

I love vintage clothing, really I do. But I am always saddened by how expensive it is to buy and wear really old hand-me-downs.
Staff are trained to be super friendly, and sometimes it's nice. It's natural to a few, others...it's increasingly annoying. I don't mind shopping in peace, but do expect help and assistance when necessary, and they are good at that.
I haven't had great experiences with the piercers, but so many others have, so it really depends on who is doing it. My bad experience was having to argue with the piercer over what gage my lip rings were, I was buying posts, and he was so stubborn and then purposely sold me the wrong size knowing I couldn't return. So I wasted around $80 on posts that didn't fit, were too small, and that was definitely what made me go to another shop instead. -

I went to Divine looking to buy a new nose ring and even though I had been in Decadence many times, it was my first time in Divine. I didn't get too much of a chance to look around as it was Canada Day (places to go, people to see!) but I was impressed by the clothes they had and the selection of shoes. The girl that helped me pick out my nose rings was really sweet and helped me choose two that wouldn't look gaudy on my face. It kind of seemed like the place to be that day so it was full of trendsters but it was still a cool place to go.

After reading Jeanette's review, I decided to visit Divine myself. It's not somewhere I would usually go -- being a girly girl -- but I'm glad I did. They've got some awesome items, a mix of old vintage and new, casual punk and preppy, with brands such as Dickie's, Only, and Kitchen Orange for both guys and gals.
The first thing that caught my eye were their new Blowfish boots, which were very funky chic. They also have a wall full of Converse sneakers, which is fun to look at. There are a lot of graphic T's, vintage scarves and hats. I tried on a mustard yellow hat with plumes, the kind of hat Queen Elizabeth would wear, just for fun. I think the tattoo guy in the back of the shop thought I was a bit nutty, laughing at myself in the mirror.
A few people were in for tattoos and body-piercing that day, and they seemed really happy with the results afterwards. The staff are really friendly and helpful, and will joke around and chat with you. Their sale items are really good deals too. I found a cute black tulle dress (on the dressy side) for $40. -

Divine is for people who want to look different and for people who want to stand out from the norm. Divine is a candy store for people who love daring fashion.
This store is located right beside the ever-delicious-smelling Funky Pickle on Whyte Ave. The store is actually in the basement and you have to go down a set of wooden stairs--you'll notice a bunch of crazy, colourful art as you head down.
First, behind the stairs is the shoe section. They have tons of awesome sneakers, Converse, and Doc Martins. The shoes are expensive, but you really aren't going to find them cheaper anywhere else.
Almost half of the store is of vintage clothing, accessories, and shoes. They usually have pretty cool stuff like old rock band t-shirts, 70s-style skirts, Adidas track jackets, and a variety of funky coats and jackets. I would say that you could find these items at a second-hand store for cheaper, but that would take a lot of time and effort.
The rest of the store is full of new clothes--many of them by local or Canadian designers, but they also have some bigger brand names like Le Tigre. These clothes are all quite expensive. Even the t-shirts are not cheap. These clothes are really cool though, so if you want unique clothing (and you can afford it), I think it's worth it.
I have noticed, over the years, that Divine has been carrying some more affordable items. I've seen some hat, bags, and even some clothing that is quite cheap, so that is really cool.
Divine also does piercings. I had one done here once, and they did a really good job. -

I'm not a big fan of Divine. I was for awhile because I would always hear how great it was from friends - it had quite the reputation.
But once I started thinking for myself, I realized that there's nothing divine about Divine.
I suppose it's a decent place to get piercings done. I went with a friend to get her bellybutton pierced. She was happy with it. There was nothing special about it and it wasn't cheap.
The clothes they have here are not nice, in my opinion. The store has a gloom to it and it feels kind of dirty. It's sort of like a higher class Value Village. The clothes are not nice, but nicer than Value Village (which isn't saying much).
I don't know where their great reputation came from. Perhaps the Whyte Ave culture created it, but I'm not a fan.
Divine is less than divine in my books! -

I don't get the hype that many people put on divine.
This gross clothing/piercing store is in a basement on whyte. It is dark and feels dingy, just like the clothing they sell.
I have never been a fan of Divine's clothing selection. I have gone here on several occasions with friends to get pierced and I felt that the staff were a little too snooty for my liking. While my friends were getting pierced, I would wander around the store and quickly become bored with the overpriced crap they were trying to sell. It is a mix of vintage and new and I don't think any of it is worth the price.
Thanks, but I would prefer value village. -

I'm not a huge fan of Divine anymore, I used to be when I was younger (15/16). They have a huge selection of vintage clothes, which I find to be over priced, but a huge selection.. the wall of shoes is also pretty awesome to look at, I haven't really bought from it in a while though as I am now a poor student.
This may not be a thing for me to pick at, but I am not a huge fan of the staff that work there, I like to be greeted when I come into a store but not constantly pestered by overly-chipper staff. Just me though?
I once had a piercing done here as well, high nostrils, they unfortunately came out crooked...the piercer was really nice though and it was very sanitary etc. I'm not sure if they still have it, but back then they had a card you could get stamped for piercings and you would get the 5th one free I think? -

I have shopped at Divine since 1993 and I still love going to buy discounted vintage clothing from there. The selection is excellent, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and the hours of operation are perfect! The used leather jackets and used denim are fun to search for, and there is always new fashions available as well. More people should go to Divine!
