this place is one of the highlights of my occasional trips to ottawa. sandwiches worth writing home about. no joke. herbed havarti cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, spicy eggplant, olives, pickled veggies, and all the sandwich-topping regulars. and a bunch of great spicy oils and sauces to boot.
all that for a $5 bill, plus a friendly conversation with the owner of this fine establishment.
seriously puts subway, quiznos, and montreal's famous santropol to shame. -

This little shop is located in a strip plaza and was a surprising find. There is just enough parking while you get for your food wrapped up. This is a great place for a warm meal to-go especially for lunch. They have a big deli counter and their sandwiches are very good value. Made fresh as you want them in front of you. Options are numerous ranging from turkey, prosciutto, chicken parmigiana or meatballs. Sandwiches start at $4.50 and are perfect for a healthy lunch. For folks who are not big sandwich fans, they have a pasta bar with lasagne, ravioli and a chef special. they have good veggie options as well. They have other Italian goodies like san beneditto mineral water, amaretti biscuits and soft drinks like orangina, brio. This place is a great lunch option.

It has been a loooong five years since I have had the privilege of sitting upon the front stoop of Dirienzo's with a trusty combo # 4 in my hand. Turkey on ciabatta with Genoa hot salami, Swiss cheese and extra mayo washed down with a syrupy Brio. This combo would come to be my primary sustenance for the better part of three years spent in our nations capital while attending school.
Despite the utmost loyalty I exhibited toward Dirienzio's and the frequency in which I visited, it would not be until well into my third year as a regular patron that I even received the slightest form of acknowledgement or recognition. This would finally come one frigid wintry day in the dead of February when I was greeted at the counter with a nearly Imperceptible head nod and the anticipatory making of my sandwich. Although ostensibly this minor act would appear highly insignificant to others that may have witnessed it, this simple act had signified I had arrived as a regular Dirienzio's customer and needn't follow the pedestrian ritual of actually ordering. They knew me now and life would never be the same. My new found status didn't escape the attention of accompanying friends who had realized that something monumental had changed in the relationship I shared with Dirienzio's, yet they simply couldn't put their fingers on what is was. This was until one afternoon rush where my preferred sandwich appeared to magically find a place in my hand as other less fortunate souls were left to jostle for position at the lunch counter, leaving one friend to exclaim with a combination of awe and envy "wow they know you now."
It took the better part of three years, almost super human sandwich consumption ability and considerable Brio indigestion to obtain the ever elusive Dirienzio nod of approval, yet it is something that I will not soon forget as evidenced by this post.
Go to Dirienzo's. You may not get the nod, but you will never be dissatisfied!! It was also here that I discovered my love of Loacker Quadratini Hazelnut Wafers, but this is another story.Listed in: My Fav All-Time

The food here is great and you can never go wrong. The only complaint with this location is that its $1.50 more than the location downtown. Its your average sandwich shop with various Italian meats.

DiRienzo Foods is a little deli/grocery in Nepean. But, what it is really famous for is its' sandwiches. I remember working at this place in the westend and asking one of the janitors where the best place was to grab some grub. Without hesitation, he said the best place in town is DiRienzo. With that kind of endorsement from an honest, working guy, I just had to go. Wow, was that janitor not kidding. This place is AWESOME for sandwiches. They have 24 different kinds made from fresh deli meats. Then, you have a choice of white or brown fresh baked bread. Finally, you can accompany your meat with an array of fresh toppings, including your basic lettuce and tomato, to your more exotic sundried tomatoes, hot peppers, eggplant, pickled veggies, or huge green olives. The sandwiches are around the $5 threshold and are fresh and delish. DiRienzo has been making these kind of sandwiches LONG before Subway and their ilk jumped on the bandwagon. Support this local landmark today. Your stomach won't regret it.
