I used to think Steveston was too far to go for anything, but not this! That's if you don't live in Richmond especially.
These are the kind of cakes I've been dreaming about to hit that spot with flavour, richness, variety and SIZE. Some of the bakeries either have size, but it's compensating for the taste. While at the others, you get rich flavours, but you wish you were getting a bigger cake to make an impression or so you can serve more people without breaking the bank.
The selection varies by the day, but they're all good. If you're getting a cake to celebrate an occasion (which is usually the case), then you'll have the difficult decision of picking just one. But they have slice deals like at a pizza joint - the more slices, the better the price. So you can compile a variety to form a whole cake too! Or you can just call ahead to get one made to order.
Last time I was there - I got a White Chocolate Kahlua Cheese Cake. I don't think I really need to describe how awesome it tasted with each bite and just let you imagine it for yourself. I think I ate 1/3 of the entire cake and it was BIG.
You can also just go there for a slice on a nice Steveston day. Unfortunately I don't think there's a convenient path that links it to the main Steveston village. But don't take my word for it as I'm not from the area. I just make the 30+ minute drive there. -

I came here and tried the Triple chocolate mousse cake, NY cheesecake, Hazelnut cake, and the Mango cream cheesecake. I bought the slices, and they were not fresh at all! The triple chocolate mousse cake had a very greasy aftertaste, the NY cheesecake tasted very stale and the taste was off. The hazelnut cake had way too much cream ( which was kinda hard), and the sponge cake was very dry. The mango cream cheesecake was only "O-KAY", when compared to the other 3. All in all, I will not venture into this bakery again, it is in the middle of nowhere, and it is quite pricy, given the quality and the taste of the cakes. DO NOT RECOMMEND!

Was 4 star, before, imo.
The pastries started to have an 'unusual' taste, about a month ago.
Today, the lemon splash (a lemon square, cut in half) was very hard, likely old stock. No flavour at all.
Imo, this has gone downhill, by a lot.
Sad.
The landlord should also be cleaning up the bird doo-doo just outside the bakery. Yeeech. -

The chocolate gnache cake is to die for!! A traditional bakery with a world class baker / owner. Always a wonderful selection of cakes, tarts and pastries to choose from.
This is our favourite place to sneak to every so often when we are feeling 'devilish' and looking to savour something sinful, but oh so good. -

We were walking aimlessly around Steveston and happened upon the new location of the Diplomat. All I can say about that experience is that the place was busy. There was definitely a line out the door! All we wanted was coffee and we stayed. The coffee and rum balls (some sort of delicious baked, rum infused cake-like half confection, half doughnut) were delicious and rich. I thought I may need to stay away from this place!
It was my birthday very recently. Guess what? My birthday cake was from the Diplomat Bakery! The chocolate gnache cake was easily one of my favourites. It isn't so rich that you can't finish a piece and it is full of deliciousness. I give this place a 2 thumbs up! -

Diplomat Bakery has been a local treasure for as long as I can remember. This bakery used to be on the corner of Moncton and No. 1 road, right at the Steveston Village. It has since moved to London Road, just off No. 2 road by the very end and close to the dyke area, by Bayview.
Their new location is much bigger than the last one but still is one of the best bakeries in town. I've had many of their cakes and I always request for Diplomat Bakery cakes whenever we're holding events. My absolute favorite is the Diplomat cake, which is layers and layers of puff pastry and butter cream. The puff pastry is light, flaky and crispy while the butter cream is delicious and rich but not very heavy at all. This is quite similar to something else that they have which they call a Napoleon Slice. Some of my other favorites include the European Cheesecake, Strawberry topped N.Y. Cheesecake and the Blueberry Cream Cheesecake. (I love cheesecake)
I also love their Pear flan, which unfortunately has gone up in price. A very simple pie with pears and glaze, it is so tasty. I always have huge portions whenever I get this.
I can't eat chocolate (unfortunately) but I was told their Triple Chocolate Cake is to die for. Other chocolate treats that I can't have but have heard great things about: Chocolate croissant and the hot chocolate.
As far as their selection for savory eats, the Calypso wrap and the Sausage rolls are my favorite. The Calypso wrap includes rice, chicken, kidney beans, vegetables and lentils in it. There is a hint of spice but it's not overwhelming at all. I love the pastry they use for the sausage rolls, it makes it very filling.
Other favorites include the almond butter croissant, the cinnobun, the raspberry coconut cake and the strawberry smoothie.
Because I was feeling adventurous today, I had the carrot cake and the vanilla cupcake. The carrot cake is moist and isn't too sweet (perfect if you like moderate sweetness, not sweet enough for me) which is the same with the icing. The pistachios add a nice touch. The vanilla cupcake is also moist but not sweet, which is great if you like moderate sweetness. I like my desserts a bit sweeter than these.
Overall a very good place. The washrooms are huge and clean and there is parking right inside the lot. Street parking is also available. The area is also very pleasant; you can walk around after you sit and enjoy your Diplomat treats to burn off the calories.
Would I come back? Every time I'm in the area. -

I had read about Gerald Stinson and his shop in Steveston and I stumbled on it one day in my car when I was "slowly fleeing" the Farmers Market crowds. It is quiet in that area with little traffic. Cyclists -the kind that wear tight nylon outfits and those special shoes- like to stop there to do some caloric damage with scones or muffins. The women behind the counter are great - so friendly and helpful. They make good things for me with Silk soy milk. The prices are reasonable especially compared to those downtown.
It was another Saturday with Ilse, my almost -centenarian friend. She likes cake and good coffee and I support her in that. At least once a week she should have exactly what she likes.
Sitting at a table outside the cafe (why are there only 4 in that large space?)
in the shade of a warm day, tree tops curving in the wind above the water down the road, I could feel my soul expand. We sat in silence for a while and enjoyed our coffee and sweets. Between us in the past few weeks we have tried a chocolate cupcake with festive sprinkles., a custard-filled and chocolate topped cream puff, chocolate mousse cake which had dark, milk and white layers and two superlative Napoleons. Ah ! The Napoleon without that cliched glaze on top and with what tasted like vanilla buttercream in between the perfectly chilled and crunchy layers of mille feuille but ..wait.... there was a surprising swipe of raspberry jam on the bottom layer. Fantastic. -

This bakery had to move since the building it was in a few years ago was torn down for a newer building. It is now at 110-6111 London Road
Richmond, BC V7E 3S3

Back then it was a little gem that had your basic breads, cakes and other little baked treats. They still have these and now you can get them with a coffee and sit down in the bakery.
The place smells wonderful. You know, that baked bread smell?
It's nestled in a little known part of Steveston away from that small town hustle during the peak season and it's comfy with more modern styling. The place is new but the bread is still the same. I guess maybe even better!Listed in: Steveston Village
