I've attempted to dine here a few times, but each time I've made that attempt, it failed.
First time I came at 9pm.  They said they were closed.
Second time 8pm and the lights were already off.
So I almost gave up.  I wasn't sure exactly when they were open after dinner time.

Tonight, 7:15 pm, hungry for some grub, grab my coat and hat and make a b line to the Diner.  Crossing fingers that it is still open.
Bingo!  It is.  What a stroke of luck.  The food better be awesome!  I mean, it's 5 stars!

The first thing I saw on the menu was the Mondo Burger. I had reservations about ordering it, so I opted for the Veggie burger, which I was told they were all out of Veggie patties.  So no Veggie burger and yes to the Mondo burger for about $8.

I figured this would be a good chance to see if it was an homage to the previous occupants burger which was also called a Mondo burger, but theirs was a 6oz patty and this new version was a 5oz patty.  Would it be overcooked like it's predecessor?

We also had a Fish burger with mushroom soup instead of fries. (all burgers come standard with fries) and I had chili fries with my burger as a substitute. (deja vu all over again after realizing I also had chili fries when it was called Mondo Burgers)

    Coffee was good.
Service was very good.  Friendly and helpful.
    Chairs were comfy.
    Desert - Bread pudding.
    For those, 4 stars solid

I was a bit saddened that the food was not quite 4 stars or more, Considering that the previous reviewer gave them 5 stars and only one review.  Once reality set it, I just ended up eating, but not so much enjoying.  You know, those places where you go to just eat, don't worry about what it is you're eating as long as it fills your belly.
Diner food.  Yes, that's exactly what it is.  Diner food.
Although lately with the resurection of Diners around town there seems to be a bit of a competition of who makes the best at this style.  And nit-picky diner enthusiasts are coming out of the woodword.  Look at Lucys diner in Vanvouver.
So in comparison, maybe it doesn't stack up.

but here's some things I would like to see in the future at this diner.  Why? Because it has such great potential and I love this town.  And if they are indeed the previous owners of Mondo Burgers, then there really is some potential, but they just need to make some adjustments and figure out who their clientele is/are.

The burgers that were being served next to us looked really appetizing, with all kinds of toppings and bountifull in their presentation.

I was saddened when I saw my burger come up with a few slices of tomatoe and flat looking iceberg lettuce. My whole burger looked flat compared to the tables burgers which had this 3D thing going on.  Theirs looked awesome. Ours looked Meh.

My burger patty was overcooked, dry and a bit hard. (deja vu - maybe their customers like it this way?).  The juice was cooked out of the meat and
the bottom piece of the hamburger bun looked very dark like it was toasted too long.  Without the spread that was on the bun, it would have tasted slightly burnt.

Now speaking of that, the Fish burger wasn't any better.  The deep fried piece of fish looked like it was either cooked too long or the oil was old.  I think it was a bit of both.  The batter was fried to a deep dark brown (you can see the pics I posted) and it did indeed taste burnt.  The fish was dry inside too.  My buddy wished for more tartar sauce to cover up the taste.  If it wasn't for that, then it would have been quite a good sandwich.
I wondered if they are worried about under cooking and instead over cook everything?

So now comes the soup. It was luke warm as soon as we had a taste of it.  Cream of Mushroom soup, luke warm.

My chili fries were better than when it was Mondo burger.  I actually got chili on it this time.

I have a feeling that when we came they were looking at winding down since they seem to close whenever it isn't busy anytime after 8pm.

We obviously came at the wrong time.  Their savvy is between breakfast and just after lunch.

Dinner time is probably decent but before 7pm.

I know there are some restaurant owners who don't like what we Yelpers do, but in this case, I think it's valid.  I love diner food and I love to see places do well in the town I call home.  I want this place to be written up with raves, and not just hype. I mean real honest to goodness good reviews that will prop this place up for all those tourists to see.  So when they read them, they'll get a good honest sense of the food and it's service.

I will have to come and try their breakfast and their lunches, which I am sure that it will get their 4 star rating next time around.
I know the table that sat next to us would have given their burgers a 5 star for presentation.
So for now, it's only a 2.5 star rating from me which is honest enough I think.
    TBC.

The service was friendly and the decor comfortable enough. The food was OK - once it got to us...

The oyster burger was cooked properly, although my wife noted some grit in hers (more a problem of the oyster than the cook, one assumes). The tartar sauce and coleslaw were, however, bland and the serving of fries was lacking.

We also had the mini fruit pie; it wasn't really that warm, the crust covering seemed undercooked and microwaved and the apples weren't peeled (I've never encountered that before...) so it wasn't an enjoyable way to finish the meal.

The biggest problem was that it took a really long time to get our food, even though it was a weekend afternoon and they weren't very busy. and they were out of the item we wanted.

btw, the bathroom was clean enough but didn't have any working paper towels - the roll was just sitting on the counter (maybe they lost the key to the dispenser?)

It seemed like it would be a good place for beer and nibblies or brunch.

Would still like to give it another try and will update if/when we do.

My wife and I went to the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon to lunch.  We were very hungry so we weren't too pocket. Unfortunately this is the place we choose. My wife got a small soup for $7 and I ordered a burger with extra over priced fried egg. after the order I wanted to change the fries to mash potatoes. The waiterss say its fine an after a minute she came to let me know they only have I to dinner and st let me choose something else. I choose yam fries.
The burger was alright but for the price its fairly small.

When we got the bill we noticed they charged me $2.29 for the yam fries without telling me and I didnt like I at all. I called the waitress to address the issue. Her comment was very unfriendly. She claim to say that after I choose yam fries she said "but its a little bit more".. and then with a fake smile she said "oh I'm sorry" and went back to clean tables. (Nowhere on their funkey menu it said its extra charge )

We went out and came back after few minutes to complain. We weren't seeking money back. We just want to let them know that we just eat here and we are NOT happy. We talked with a kid who claim to be the mgr.  He said "I know its not on the menu but look ar your bill! Its written here very clear." (Wtf?!). That was his answer for everything we said. we were very frustrated already from his childish attitude so we just walked out of there even more unhappy than b4.

Mr. Mgr, if you are reading this I hope u understand that u lost future business from that attitude. Ok, I don't want my stinkey $3 back. But instead of arguing  with me and tell me that Im wrong and you are right you can at least man me feel a bit happier. Im sure that if I would say I want my money back you will give it to me right away but I'm not that kind of person. In other restaurants that we went before,   there was. A similar  issue, the waitress/mgr offered us something.  (%10 off next time or free small desert) Its not a big deal but at least they showed us they care about their customers and not some dollars.

A real "tip" for the waitress, I still don't know if u said "a little bit more" or not
But even if u made it up right away, dont ever say something like that to a customer. A little bit what more? The size of the dish? The price? Ok if it the price? Maybe.for you spittle bit is 50 cents? Main its $10 ? Who knows?! In any normal restaurant it will be "yam fries is extra.$2.29, is that ok?"

In conclusion,  the worst service ive ever had and over priced food with funkey menu.

I ate there yesterday for lunch.  I had to go back for dinner!
With a short and simple menu, every food item obviously gets the fullest attention and love in its creation.  The prices make eating out fun.  The servers have good attitudes.  This almost beats eating at home.
