This is what I love about Yelp!  I needed a new place to get my hair cut.  I searched for a place that has great reviews and I tried it out.

I made an appointment with Stephanie yesterday and off I went.  I was nearly late because the place is so small I couldn't even see it from across the street.  I knew the address so I crossed the street with the assurance that it must be there and then I saw it - I sideways sign jutting out from a lone window.  I walked up the few stairs and walked in the door - no wonder I missed it.  The place is smaller than my living room and if you knew my apartment you would know that it is SMALL.  Good things come in small packages.

Dickson Hairshop has two chairs, a sink chair, a bench to sit and wait and a closet where the receptionist sits amongst the cash register and coats.  Under the sink chair you will find Bacon - Stephanie's very cute dog who chills throughout the day while she works.  You don't need any more room for a two chair shop so it works perfectly.

Stephanie was great.  She interviewed me to get a sense of what I was looking for by asking a series of questions until she was sure that she knew what I meant.  She was personable, kept the conversation going while she cut my hair and got the cut completely right.  I will be back.

FINALLY!  I have found my hairdresser in NYC!  I am extremely meticulous about my hair and since moving here from Chicago, I've been dreading the "dating process" of finding the right hairdresser.  After numerous fails, awkward stylists, and wasted money at other places, I found Jason at Dickson Hairshop!

I have super straight, heavy Asian hair.  It's not like wire, it's just very stubborn and likes to lie flat.  Since it's so straight, you can also see every clip made.  It shows every perfect cut and every terrible cut.  To make it harder for some hairdressers, I have a pixie cut.  Not many hairdressers can handle the precision I like and the ability to give me just the right amount of volume without over texturing to the point I look like an anime character.

Jason understood this balance.  He knew exactly what he was doing from the start.  I told him what I wanted and what I didn't like with my last haircut from another business.  He saw what I meant right away and asked me great questions so he could give me the perfect cut.  As he was cutting, he was extremely precise.  He added the necessary texture to my hair that it was lacking without going overboard.  He was also really easy to speak with and a great listener.  I felt comfortable asking him for his opinion.  And he asked me for permission to go shorter before taking the length away which I found considerate.

The shop itself is tiny.  It has 2 stations side by side and then a sink for hair washing immediately following.  I don't mind though.

The whole experience was thorough, professional, and friendly.  And I can't believe it was only $45 for my pixie cut (plus $10 tip).  I paid more at other places that paled in comparison.

Super satisfied customer.  I left feeling fantastic about the renewed me!

I've had my hair cut by both Steph and Jason. Both times great great experiences.

Steph gave me my first short hair cut and made the transition a good one. She listened to all I wanted done and I got a lot of compliments from my cut. She is super sweet.

Jason gave me a punkier cut and really understood my hair. My hair gets really puffy, but he thinned it out and gave it great texture.

I used to never look forward to my hair getting cut. I used to be nervous about answering people when they ask, "What do you want to do?" After saying that I didn't know so many times and getting responses like these
"You don't know the number you want?"
"Do you want it short up top/sides/back? What?"
"Next time know what you want."

I've just kind of given up hope that I'll ever enjoy getting my hair cut.

No longer.  I'm always excited to come here because I know that David is going to hook me up with something I'm going to like.  He makes sure that I'm satisfied with all his decisions even though I pretty much give him carte blanche to do as he pleases.  I always enjoy my conversations with him too.

If I ever leave the city, I know David and Dickson Hairshop is one place I'm going to miss.  It's taken me 25 years to find a place where I feel safe with my hair.

I had my hair done again at Dickson a week ago and once more I must say, holy shit.

I quit box dyeing and instead had some (lovely) floozy in Idaho bleach the shit out of it, leaving it a beautifully colored and skin-tone appropriate bird's nest shit pile.  I told Jason to make it beautiful and after giving me that "you know what you did" look, he made it flouncy.  Bouncy, flouncy, blonde and everything a girl could want.  My curls have been freed from their dead beat splits and are bouncing around no product or heat styling needed.

Jason, again, you are a god among men.  Thanks for making me giggle at myself in the mirror.

I definitely just joined Yelp to review these guys. They have recently expanded their little family and I saw one of the new recruits, Carol. I went in with pictures of a haircut and a request for a bleach-and-dye color, and I got exactly what I wanted!
Carol was great from the start -- easygoing but clearly very knowledgeable, had lots of advice but listened to what I wanted. I got a very cute, professional-looking curly bob with the underside bleached and dyed fuschia, and I felt like everyone in the shop "got" what I was trying for and just made it happen! The receptionist even ran out to Ricky's to get the hair color I wanted because it wasn't in-house.
The whole cut, bleach, and color experience (I must have been in the shop for two hours at least) was $175, which, let me tell you, is a bargain in NYC, especially in this neighborhood. I love this place.

After a number of hairdressing fails in New York - including paying top dollar for a peroxide job that turned a rather geriatric shade of lavender - I did what any self-respecting woman would do and asked my lovely intern where she acquired her super awesome haircut.

Lucky for me, she was only too happy to share the details. A lickety-split later, and I had myself booked in to see Steph at Dickson Hairshop.

Steph gave me great hair for the last 18 months I lived in NY. Ladies would know what it's like to go to bed one day with perfectly wonderful hair and wake up the next to realise that there has been a shift of galactical proportions and now your hair just won't 'do' properly. Well Steph was always there to realign the galaxies and whip my 'growing out' hair into shape. Her cuts lasted an age and her colours were on point too.

If I have one teensy gripe it's that the growing number of 5 star Yelp reviews sometimes made it a little difficult to get my tush into that seat with only a few days notice. But thems the breaks. Steph is definitely worth the wait and I'll happily make it a little bit harder for someone else to get an appointment in order to sing her praises appropriately. Hurrah for Steph.

I was in desperate need of a haircut and decided to go on Yelp to find the best place.
Dickson had the best reviews, so I made an appointment. I was SO pleased with the outcome.

Steph cut my hair and was so knowledgeable and kind. She really took the time to explain to me how to style and take care of my curly hair. She recommended products and explained what she was going to do with my hair. It looks great. She gave me a full blowout after the cut and I felt like I had bombshell hair. I'm really looking forward to going back.

The space itself is TINY. Not at all what I was expecting but not in a bad way. The vibe is very welcoming and relaxing. When I was there, there were a few repeat customers (always a good sign) and everyone seemed to have a great relationship.

They also have the most adorable dog named Bacon who was sleeping under the shampoo chair. You really can't go wrong with that.

Finally got to have my haircut by Jason after a cancellation because of the hurricane in August, and then scheduling a trip down from Syracuse when I could get in here.

Jason definitely delivered what I had been reading about on Skype for months. I got a great pixie cut with tons of precision, professionalism, and great advice about taking better care of my hair. I've never left a salon without wanting to run home and do my hair myself, but I walked around all day knowing it looked great (would have been a long run home...), and my husband agreed. :o)

Sasha, the receptionist is really sweet and welcoming too!

Sev cut my hair with crazy attention to detail with a great many different tewlz and implements and they are all very friendly in there.  I thought my hair looked good, you know, but I get a very traditional cut, so didn't think much of it until I left the shop.

I walked two blocks and this big Italian thug looking dude started eyeballing me and came right up to me.  I was with a lady friend and I thought he was going to punch me in my face or something, so I kind of steered us away from him, but he walked over to us anyway and growled aggressively into my face YOU LOOK FUCKING HOT MAN!
A little stunned, we kept walking with him shouting after me MY MAN!  FUCK!  FUCKING HOT!

If getting attack-hit on the minute you leave a hair shop doesn't prove you got a nasty good haircut, I don't know what does.*

*But sir, I do think you should tone it down a bit when the next fellow with the fonce haircut strolls past you.  You scared the shit out of me for a sec there.

Very happy with Sev and the haircut.

Sev did a great job with discussing prior hair styles, what I was looking for, and different products to accomplish goal.  Took his time to figure out what he was going to do instead of just cutting away.  Did a great job adding texture and layers to what can normally be a bland haircut.   Saw a couple guys modelesque type hair so the shop definitely accommodates all types.

They were very accommodating to slide me into a cancellation spot on short notice.

As a dog lover, it was great to see Bacon waddling around the shop

Jason at Dickson cut my hair to perfection. It was my first haircut on the east coast and well worth the price. He made sure to tailor my cut to my liking even though I went in not knowing what I wanted. I will most definitely be visiting Dickson again :)

Just make sure to make an appointment because it sounds like this shop gets booked up.

I got my haircut here a few months ago.  I loved my cut, it was really stylish.  But when I got home, I noticed the layers weren't cut with precision.  Although it wasn't perfect I was happy with the cut.  And I think any folks in their twenty's who wants a stylish cut here will be satisfied.

But since I'm in my thirties, I do realize that I want a stylish precision cut for what I'm paying.  Steph was great, she was nice, but perhaps after a few years she'd be even better.

Just yesterday, I went to a Japanese stylist and she noticed immediately that my layers were off.  And the old tale rings true, American's just don't know how to cut Asian hair.

I enjoyed it while it lasted but a better cut would have lasted even longer.  It was an okay experience.

Stephanie! So personable. So knowledgeable. This is artistry.
I walked in to Dickson's with a mop of hair that hadn't been cut in almost a year that reached my waist except for the the bangs I had mutilated myself. After a small snafu with scheduling that she handled with incredible professionalism and grace, I sat in her chair and worked with her on figuring out what to do with my crazy long and discombobulated hair. We wound up agreeing that lots of inches had to go in order to achieve some healthy locks. I wanted bangs that ended at about my eyebrows and she needed to work some magic to make it happen. More importantly, I  really wanted these bangs and even though I have  big cheeks and my other hairdressers always dissuaded me from getting them she was wholeheartedly behind my choice and made them work for me. The haircut looks healthy and my bangs look adorable. I got compliments the moment I left the shop and I feel sexy.
    Also....
    Free bang trims!

    Reasons this place is great:

    1) Worth writing my first Yelp review even though I have have been a yelper for over 2 years.

    2) Stephanie was able to figure out my mumble jumble description of a haircut to produce something that looks outstanding.

    3) After telling her that I live in Chicago, she didn't hesitate or invest any less effort in my haircut.  Treated me like I would be coming back for years.

    4) I might move to east village so that I am closer to this place.

    5) If not #4 I will have to fly back from chicago every 3 months.

    6) Price is very very reasonable at $45.

    7) Named their dog Bacon.

    8) My hair looks badass!

Wow.  So it has 5 stars on Yelp.  And im pretty critical.  And I can honestly say I couldnt have had a better haircut experience for my first in NY.

A lot like many other folks, I am married to my stylist.  Being a boy with a good amount of hair and very specific of its styling, i was holding out until my next trip to Atlanta to get it done by my guy there (Rexx @ Helmet Midtown Atlanta).  He always does incredible.  But it got too intense.  too in my face.  and I was ready for change.

I discovered Dickson on yelp after many reviews all stated the same deal.  This place apparently knows whats up.  So I called in and setup an appt.

I showed up today right on time and was greeted by Aiken, a very relaxed and friendly french bulldog who decided I was an appropriate cuddle buddy.  He was right.  We sat together staring longingly into each others eyes for a few minutes while I waited on Jason to finish with his other client, and he came to greet me.

long story short, I had no idea really what i wanted.  I know how my hair reacts at certain lengths, and i knew i wanted to go from my pseudo mullet / 80s hockey star hair cut to something much more manageable with much less maintenance.  After asking some real questions that mattered, Jason made some suggestions and I decided to move forward with them.  Jason spent A lot of time working on my hair.  and not because he is slow which by no means he is not, but because he was damn thorough.  making sure he missed no detail, and touching on every issue that has been a problem in the past for me (thinning me out thoroughly, cleanse, repeat, looking for strays, the neck, cleaning sideburns etc) I left having an incredible NY hair cut experience.

On top of that, the staff, incredibly friendly and just chill.  felt like i was at a friends place bullshitting.  cool folks.  Aiken couldnt have been a better greeter;  not in my face.  but quite the adorable, chill pep pep.

Jason is now my dude.  And I will use him.  for any and all services hair related.  He was honest, friendly, genuine, easy to chat with, personable.

The shop is tiny, but you know, thats NY.  come in, make yourself comfortable, and plan to share a seat with Aiken.  If you arrive early enough, maybe you can take a nap with him on their bench.
Cash only, but thats just how EV/LES are.

essentially, when you go to a hair spot for the first time, you want
    A. damn good hair
    B. friendly atmosphere
    C. reasonable price

these guys murder all three.  stoked on it.

Thanks Severin.  You gave me an amazing cut that met my expectations.  I'm looking forward to the next cut when my hair grows out a bit more.

I have very straight thick Asian hair that grows outward in strange poofy way.  For the last 13 years, it's been short and boring.  Now, I'm on my way to having that cool nerdy haircut worthy of a J.Crew catalog.  I say 'on my way' because it was too short to do exactly what I wanted.  But, Severin the Genius, cut it in a way that my hair will grow into the look I'm aiming for.

He offered great simple styling tips, and I can return in 2-3 weeks for a clean up, free!  As we talk, he mentions that he's worked on a lot of Asian hair because of his previous boss/mentor.  It's obviously paid off.

Severin, you have a client for life.  That's a huge step for me since I'm used to $8 cuts in Chinatown.  Hopefully, Aiken the Frenchie will be there next time....

Wow, this place is super impressive and very affordable for Manhattan. It's the cutest, tiniest hole in the wall place you'll ever find-- a hidden gem in a city filled with overpriced hair hacks!

Jason consulted with me for almost 20 minutes on what I wanted to do-- fix a botched, heavily layered 'do that had left me with a mullet situation that was making me miserable.

He took the time and really did me right. I love my haircut, and I'll definitely be coming back. Plus he's super smart and a great conversationalist-- super plus, in my book!

I've paid over $150 for a haircut, I've paid $15 for a haircut. I've been to "super" saloons and I've been to Cost Cutters. I couldn't find anyone who knew how to handle my hair. No one. It was annoying. I have a bunch of cowlicks all over my head so I went in before making an appt to see if there was someone that specialized in stupid hair, like mine. Stephanie, very nicely was like "this is what we do honey, you can see anyone and they can handle your hair." So I made an appt with Sev, who was great. I got a perfect haircut. He was great, everyone was nice and the cuts are CHEAP! I forget what I paid, but I think it was around $45.

I recommend this place to anyone...wait if I do that, then they'll get too busy...er...i mean...don't go to this place, you'll hate it! :)

Jason: So, how did you hear about us?
    me: yelp!
    Jason: nice.

if you're looking for a high end salon that blasts house music while you're getting your hair cut and styled, Dickson Hairshop is NOT for you. But if you're looking for a low key spot with stylists that listen, contribute advice and know how to cut hair, look no further.

Since there are only two seats in the shop its in your best interest to call ahead and set up an appointment. I called a day ahead and set one up with Jason.

I had no idea what to do with my hair. I didnt bring pictures. Nothing. Theres not much you can do with my hair since its in the weird, in between stage. its not short and its not long. its curlier/wavy in some spots and straight in others. Before getting my hair washed Jason and I had a conversation about what I might want to do. We traded ideas, spoke about what worked and what didnt and I left it up to him. I'm glad I did. I am super happy with how my hair came out.

note: prices are either $45 or $65 depending on length of time spent on the cut and it is cash ONLY.
and apparently they give a shot of whiskey (i did see the shot glasses) out before your haircut. although I didnt get one, its something else to look forward to during my next visit. ;)

Grubby hipster hair shop with hilarious hairdressers, ridiculous story-telling, and sexy hair extraordinaire.

Jason, by the way, is my favorite. I hop on the seat and let him go to town. Keep it long! I say. Keep it wavy! I say. Make it pretty! I holler.

    He complies.

And voila, I have the hair that would knock a grown ass man to the floor if I tossed it. I have shampoo commercial hair.

I have a $75 hole in my pocket, but hey, with hair like that, I can find a man to pay for dinner and drinks.

I am hesitant to offer accolades that are well deserved because I don't want Dickson Hairshop to change. However, I do want them to do well and stick around because I cannot find a better men's haircut in NYC.

For a place so bare bones and no frills I am treated like the 5 stars they receive from me here.  My hair is fine and curly which makes me indecisive because my hair does what it pleases. They manage to manage my coif and offer advice to keep it that way.

After searching around I saw far too many barbershops where 90% of the review was about how great the atmosphere was. Don't get me wrong, atmosphere is fine, but a good cut is way more important than how vintage the seats were and how many taxidermied heads are on the wall.

When I went into Dickson, Severin was incredibly friendly and gave me the best haircut I've gotten in a long time. I'm pretty bad about giving directions on my hair, but he knew exactly how to cut it, spending enough time on it so that the cut would last instead of just looking good for 3 days.

At $45 for a cut, it's not as cheap as the corner barber, but it's far from expensive. And, for a guy with curly hair, not seeing the clippers until the very end was a massive relief and worth every penny.

I'll definitely be going back. Plus, where else will you get advice on where to get cheap contacts AND a great haircut?

Absolutely love this place. If you want fancy, plush, spacious salon it's not the place for you. But if you care about excellent stylists who do great work, I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.

Steph is perhaps the best stylist I've ever had. She takes the time to ask all the right questions and doesn't do anything she's not 100% sure you wouldn't like. My hair always looks fantastic and grows in well (it's a short cut) and it is a STEAL.

I have been looking for a good place to get my haircut for a while and I finally found it here!  The shop is tiny, but the stylists are great!  Stephanie sat down with me and went over what I did, what I wanted, and made some recommendations.  I was getting a pretty drastic change and so I was a little nervous, but i LOVE it and, even though the weather has been horrible and rainy since, I keep getting compliments on the cut!

And its right next to chinatown, so I topped off my haircut with 4 dumplings for a dollar!  :)

The place absolutely lives up to the reviews!  I met with Jason, and my hair is now everything that I ever wished it was.  Trust me-you will not regret making the decision to get your hair cut here!

This is the barber you've been looking for all your life. Run, don't walk to Severin Dickson's "Dickson Hairshop" for the haircut to end all haircuts. I challenge you to stop going after your first one!

I only wish my hair grew faster.

There are so many reasons why I've had a hard time finding a great stylist:

    * I prefer edgy haircuts that can pass as professional, aren't razor-cut, and don't look hipstery.
    * My hair grows really fast and is just curly enough to look terrible with a bad cut.
    * I color it myself, at home, and used to shave it myself, with a clipper.
    * I don't want to have to fuss with it to get it to look reasonably good.

I've been to salons on both coasts and paid more than I care to say for cuts that were bland, unflattering, or hard to maintain.

Then I found Dickson Hairshop. Steph saw me the day after I called, fixed my grown-out, fluffball un-cut, and gave me a cut that works curly AND wavy AND blown straight. It's a tiny miracle, and it's lasted eight full weeks.

All these, and they have a shop dog named Bacon. I couldn't love them any more.

I came here based on the rave reviews on Yelp... people love this place for a reason!  Steph cut my hair and she did an excellent job.  She was also a pleasure to be around -- really funny and nice to talk to.  I absolutely love what she did with my hair and the price was reasonable.  This was without a doubt one of the best haircuts I've had.  I walked out of there feeling awesome, with my 20s style bob w/ awesome, short  fringe bangs.  Also, her French Bulldog is adorable!!!

Over a year in NYC, and probably 10 haircuts in that time, I've finally found my barber. In fact, they're probably one of the best I've ever been to.

    Good things:
+ Tiny place with oldschool chairs, warm old decor and a great atmosphere.
+ The staff are lovely. Stephanie has done me two bloody good haircuts so far, finding me a classic but fractured style that's good for work and play.
+ Decent music on the stereo, from people who care about music.
    + The price is right.

    Great things
+ Complimentary bourbon, from a Dickson branded shot glass, oh yes.

I hope to keep these guys in business for as long as I don't need Rogaine.
