Review from Mimosa K.
South End, NS
In March, I came across a Yelp online fourm/talk titled "Naan other than Indian food" --- many "yelpers" of Halifax commented on a restaurant named Dhaba Express, discussing its good taste and value. After hearing so many good things, I decided to give Indian food in Halifax one last try..
Since our first experience at Dhaba in March, my husband and I frequent there whenever we are in BLIP. To date, we have been there 4 times and were thoroughly pleased with each dining experience.
As I've stated in previous reviews, I would like to self-title myself as an experienced Indian food lover who had tried it all from popular cities in Canada, the US, as well as in Southern regions in India (I used to work as an TESL teacher in Tamil Nadu).
Although finding Indian food in Halifax is relatively easy, I had not been able to satisfy my Indian food craving since leaving Toronto. Most, (if not all) Indian restaurants in Halifax cater to the westernized "North" punjab cuisine and fail to acknowledge other regions of India. And for the South Indian food lovers like myself: they have MASALA DOSA on Sundays! Unreal, i haven't be able to find dosa in Halifax until now.
With that said, Dhaba's chefs certiany know what they are doing. If you are an experienced Indian food lover like myself, I would highly recommend giving Dhaba a try. The portions are fair, the price is very reasonable & the quality is what makes my family regulars at this dining spot.
Thanks to the fellow yelpers for the online thread/posts in March, I would have never discovered this hidden gem on my own! 5 stars for the food quality and friendly service. -

Chicken Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, Chicken Madras, Samosas, Spring Rolls, Nann, and Saffron Rice are to die for!
The food is filling, and all that kept two people eating for 3 and a half days. The price is good now that they have combos.
I really think this is the best place to get Indian food. It was a little difficult for me to find, but it's basically behind Jungle Jim's in Bayers Lake. They opened the other section to the restaurant so it's a little bigger now.
The staff is very friendly and the chefs know what they are doing. -

Something different in Bayer's Lake! Yay
So as you may know, I'm a huge Butter Chicken fan and this place has got one of the best Butter Chicken plates in the HRM. Wanting to try this place for a while I decided to grab some take-out tonight. The combo BC plate came with a large portion of basmati rice, salad and naan bread lightly toasted with garlic. It was pretty amazing. The BC was creamy and flavorful, and the rice was seasoned.
DE offers a buffet on Monday evenings and Saturday lunchtime which I will be participating in. Yes, yes I will.
The restaurant itself is quite small, but very cute. I look forward to dining in soon. Although my interaction with staff was limited, they left a great first impression. -

Lunch express combos are an incredibly good value. Great service and great food. It's nice to have something besides a big box store in Bayers Lake

This place is REALLY good! I have been waiting for good Indian to come to Halifax and I've finally found it. I had the butter chicken combination place ($10) which came with a salad, a good portion of fluffy basmati rice and a half circle of naan. Everything was fresh, flavourful and not heavy or oily. The mango lassi wasn't too sweet, either. The service was very friendly and prompt. They only have about 8 tables, so either go early or make reservations.
I am absolutely going back and recommending it to friends! -

We tried Dhaba's on Friday night. We ordered the beef vindaloo combination set and the lamb briyani rice combination set. The beef vindaloo combination set comes with fragrant rice (which was done pretty well). Along with it was the beef, some salad tuck in the corner of the same plate. Over the top of the rice is the naan bread. I would say things get rather cramp on that piece of plate. I would have love to see things separated a little giving way to more breathing space for maneuvering the different edible stuff. Also since things are served with rice, it would have been nice if we were given the spoon as well rather than having to ask for it. I find it rather strange having to eat rice with my fork, don't you think. Maybe for some locals they may think so, but we Asians surely know that its either you scoop them with your hands or a spoon but definitely not a fork. The vindaloo was ok. It was suppose to be hot as they said on the menu but I know based on my standards that ain't hot enough for us. Maybe it is for others. As to the briyani, the seasoning is rather mild for our liking. We would prefer it to be more heavy. The lamb was dry. Overall, if you've never been to an Indian restaurant, I suppose going here wouldn't hurt. But if you know what good Indian food is like, you'd be a bit dissapointed like we did. However, service wasn't too bad. I'll probably give their Saturday brunch buffet a try as a last chance.

I have been a huge Indian fan for a long time, and this place definitely impressed me! I was happy with their vegetarian choices and their portion sizes. Although I found their Basmati rice a tad dry, I loved their chickpea curry and the fresh Naan bread! Good service and atomosphere, I will definitely go back.

The food here is acceptable, with their best dishes being the butter chicken and the vindaloo. The only issue is the cost versus portion size. I would hope they would consider portion size when it comes to keeping loyal customers.

The food tasted okay but the portions were quite small - I had the individual butter chicken platter and was still hungry after eating my small cup of chicken. I was also disappointed to only get 1/2 piece of naan bread, would have been nice to get a whole piece, makes me wonder who got my other half. The servers were nice but unless they increase their portion sizes or lower the prices I am not sure we will make this a regular dining spot.
