What a gem in DT Victoria, my wife and I have heard multiple times from friends how good Devour was and on their recommendations we decided to give it a try. We headed DT Friday night to find the place lively and jammed pack, we almost decided to go somewhere else when the male server seeing us looking at the menu greeted us outside to let us know he had a table opening up if we wanted to come in for dinner. We accepted happily and he had a table ready for us in less then 5 min, it was a nice day so we did not mind the wait.

For such a small place it sure packs a lot of excellent food flavours and outstanding service into it. The music was amazing and it had an all around European style of dining. We started our meal off with an amazing blue crab and Asian style noodle salad that was exploding with delicious fresh flavours, next we both had the risotto suggested by our server who advised us it was spot prawn season, it was amazing and exactly how he described it with the spot prawns and perfectly cooked cod. We were both full by the end but couldn't resist the tiramisu being served to other guests around us that bordered on one of the best we ever tasted.

This is a must for any Victorian or out of towner looking for amazing food
Thank you devour for an amazing dinner

Ever had that perfect food moment? The one where you can hear violins playing and you want to shout from the highest mountain top of your ecstasy? Devour is one of those special places that you feel you alone have discovered. Tiny, charming...food magic is created here in the smallest of kitchens. With only 14 seats you will need to be strategic when you visit...lunch time can get busy and it's best to show up pre 1130 or post 130, though takeaway is also an option. Best kept secret....open Thursday and Friday evenings and you can reserve the place for a dinner party that you don't actually have to host!

The service was terrible, the food was bad, and I seriously doubt that their ingredients are as fresh as they claim.

We did not like the first course, it just tasted bad and it wasn't at all what we were expecting from the description.  The waiter made a comment about the way we ate around parts of it but didn't ask if it was bad or if we didn't like it, so he just made it awkward.

For our main course, we ordered salmon.  After our appetizer, however, the waiter informed us that another customer complained that the salmon was dry, so he changed our order from salmon to steak.  It wasn't a question, he was just letting us know... We didn't actually want the steak, but we tried to have a good attitude about it.  When we got it, we did not like it, the only flavor on it was the blue cheese, which is odd because the place prides itself on fresh ingredients- shouldn't that make the meats flavorful?  The steak itself was basically raw, too bad because we do not eat rare meat, and also odd because I think that the rarer the meat the more flavorful it should be.  Again, we did not want to make a big deal of it because we didn't think there was any solution- they were out of their third and last main course that night...

When it came time to pay, we got another unpleasant surprise, apparently the steak cost more than the salmon.  We decided to ask if we could get the price lowered, just by $3 to match the price of the salmon.  We thought this was more than reasonable since we overheard him offer 30% off the entire meal to the man with the dry salmon, and since he didn't give us an option with the steak.  His reaction was revolting.  He basically said no, but kept making comments and asking questions- "I didn't realize that $3 is such a big issue for you.  If you didn't like it you should have said something.  Was there something wrong with it?"  Eventually he resentfully took it off, but it was completely unprofessional.  $3 might not be a big deal but we did not want the steak in the first place so why should we pay more for it?  We did not see a point in complaining about the steak since there were no other menu options, and we didn't want to wait for them to attempt the flavorless steak again, and also because it is just an annoyance to waste what was supposed to be a romantic evening on complaints.  His attitude about such a little adjustment is ridiculous when he is willing to take 30% off the other customers meal without a thought.

So, I will say this to you, waiter that was working friday night, you, sir, are rude.  If you don't care about your job, find a job that you do care about.  Preferably one that has nothing to do with customer service.

My wife had been out of town for a couple of days and as such, I had been strictly eating some sort of bachelor chow. As such, I felt famished during the lunchtime of my final Monday afternoon in Victoria. So, I decided to treat myself to Devour after passing by hundreds of times, envious of those eating inside.

And I decided to go for a pork shoulder on a bed of polenta with some greens (kale i believe). And it turned a cold grey Monday into something warmer. The polenta was creamy, the way I like it. And the pork was tender, and I recall the strong flavor of a red wine reduction.

This was a bit richer than I prefer for my lunches, but Devour also provides lighter options such as sandwiches.

This is one of those rare places where you just feel plain out happy and healthy when eating.

Growing up in Northern California near the wine areas of Napa and Sonoma, fresh, organic ingredients played a huge role in my expectations of delicious and healthy food.

Devour not only draws on plenty of fresh ingredients, they manage to change up their menu on a daily basis.

For a lunch here, I would highly recommend one of the creative sandwiches on freshly baked artisan bread. Pair it with a cup of their great soup to really round it all out.

They're only open for dinner from Thurs-Sat I believe.

This is how it should be done.

The menu changes every day and every item on the menu has had considerable thought and care for flavour combinations. Ingredients are all seasonal, fresh, and local and staff are really friendly.

There is a selection of different items at different price levels. Usually about 5 items to choose from each day. Always a vegetarian choice, always delicious.

We have now made visiting here a weekly tradition. Gourment food at reasonable prices. Well done!

A warning for new visitors...the restaurant only seats like 10 people, so get there early if you want to stay. They do take out though and catering.

I finally tried Devour a couple of weeks ago and have been back about 5 times since.  The food is consistently amazing.  I like to think that this is what the food on Top Chef must taste like.  Even a seemingly normal menu item like the pulled pork sandwich is somehow ridiculously delicious.  I have yet to be disappointed.

The muffins are definitely worth mentioning as well.  I didn't think anything could ever top the blueberry oat chocolate chip muffin but then I tried the lemon strawberry muffin the other day and it was actually the best muffin I have ever eaten.

Devour is getting a lot of hype lately and I really think that it can live up to its reputation.

I'm officially addicted. 4 visits in under 3 days, I'm going to need rehab.
Jena and Alison love food and it shows. Great care and attention is given to every ingredient. There is never a dull flavour and the dishes get better and better as you eat them. The chefs here understand balance and flavour development. Taste the love.

I'm having such a food crush right now that I want to tell you all that its awful and not to go, just to ensure the continued availability of seating for myself at lunch. However they seem like wonderful people and I couldn't possibly do that (it is awfully tempting though). Also I dont think anything I say could possibly stop people from finding out about devour and going there. That said, allow me to relive my recent lunch glories...

Their simple side salad with vinaigrette had my taste buds dancing before I even put it in my mouth. Vibrant and delicious. The rough cut almonds in the salad balanced it very nicely with a nutty flavour and added to the texture with some real crunch.

Next I tried the Moroccan chicken stew with philo flake. It was subtle, rich, well balanced, very nice savoury flavours that got tastier as you went . The philo flake added some texture. It felt like gourmet comfort food.

The next day it was the braised short rib and aged cheddar grilled cheese with green salad. Best grilled cheese I've ever eaten. 'nuff said.

I followed that with caramelized apple and brie on ciabatta. Delicate sweetness complimented by creamy brie. We all know that apples and brie work together, this was no exception. Simple and tasty, just sweet enough.

The next day (I told you im becoming addicted...) I had the 6-ounce Rib Eye steak with horseradish cream on roasted squash, beet, & yam salad with strawberries. What a bold venture. Very daring flavour combinations that at first I wasn't 100% sure about, but bite after bite, it tasted better and better until it was done. Had nobody been looking, I surely would have licked the plate.

I finally had the time and room in my tummy to go for one of the desserts. Tried the pecan praline ice cream sandwich. I dont even know what to say. Myself and my guests at lunch all ordered one. It was so good that we had completely finished it and I kept tongue probing all over my mouth looking for any last remnants to savour. I looked at one of my guests and said "I'm still sucking the inside of my mouth" she laughed and said "me too!" (this is the firs time in my life I've ever experienced or said something like this and amusingly, my guest couldn't have agreed more). Somehow I don't think it will be the last time.

I can't recommend Devour enough. Be aware that seating is extremely limited, but you can get take out and you can also call ahead for take out. They are open for dinners some nights (usually thurs/fri i beleive, recently mon-wed as well, best to check first). Their menu changes daily, new one is up usually by 10:30 at http://www.devour.ca/d...

My favorite place to eat in Victoria. Herb paste lamb chops served with salad. Seared duck was good but needed more flavor. The desserts are divine. Cherry ricotta tart and lemon polenta cake.  Their menu changes daily and tastes very fresh.
