TORTILLA DE PATATAS! (yes, the caps were necessary) Tortilla is a thick egg omelette made with potatoes and fried in olive oil.

Well, finding it prepared bocadillo style in NYC has not been an easy task. Until now my friend... until now.
It was big and delicious (my only complaint was the addition of mayo and the big bread). It was $8 and big enough to share with a friend.

There are about 6 tables in the back of the grocery and the ambiance of the entire place took us back to Barcelona. Ahhh......

It looks like they are going to start making paella on Saturdays too!!

    The food love shall continue.

But the food in the back stinks.

This might be considered rash but Despaña makes me want to drop everything in my life, run away to Spain, eat tons of Serrano ham, fall in love with a sexy machismo bull fighter, and never come back to the States!

My friend and I came to Despaña before an Elite event this week to grab a bite to eat. I had done some research on places in the area and it seemed like a great opportunity to grab a tasty yet relatively cheap meal in Soho. Not spending a lot was key. After reading everyone's heavenly reviews on Yelp, I knew I just had to go here.

When you walk into Despaña, you might get overwhelmed with what I like to call the  "Ooo Something Shiny!" Syndrome. I walked in and didn't know where to focus my eyes for a good ten minutes, and I might have scared a few people with my sudden head movements. On my right was a meat and cheese counter laden with Spanish cuts, cheese wedges, packages of baquerones (white anchovies), and legs of cured animal flesh dangerously dangling from the ceiling taunting the casual carnivore. On my left, a whole wall was devoted to cans, boxes, and bottles of imported goods from Spain filled with yummy little morsels such as Spanish olives, olive oil, vinegar, pickles, onions, and other varieties of spreads and vegetables. Samples were available and I plucked an olive here and a pickle there. I even sampled some cheese from the counter and was pleasantly surprised by the mellow flavor. Besides being surrounded by food, the wall ornaments were something to behold with a real fighting bull's head mounted on the wall in all it's glory. You can tell it's a Spanish bull by the horns. Plus, he looks exactly like the one in all those Bugs Bunny cartoons.

If you can make it down the front foyer past the wall of imported goods and the meat and cheese counter without sampling, good for you. Straight in the back there's a counter that you can order tapas, sandwiches, desserts, drinks, and salads from. After careful deliberation of the laminated menu, my friend and I decided to order a bocadillo (sandwich) and split it. That way, we would have eaten something but not be too full as to not enjoy the food ahead of us. We went with the "Despaña" sandwich which had Serrano ham, creamy goat cheese, and tomato-garlic spread. It came to $9.25 after tax which was completely affordable for us two broke girls to split. The sweet girl at the counter asked if I wanted it hot or cold. I was in the mood for a cold, meaty sandwich so I decided upon cold.

So confession, I'd never had Serrano ham before. Boy oh boy, had I been missing out! For some reason I was thinking the ham would be thick cut like American ham and I realize that admitting that here now makes me sound very uncouth and ignorant. Whoops. Serrano ham is thinly sliced, and I can best compare it to Prosciutto in the Italian world. It's salty with an undeniable sweetness that permeates every taste bud as it melts on your tongue. Now the sandwiches at Despaña are a very good size. You feel as if you are getting your moneys worth. After cutting our sandwich in half, I was a little worried that it would be way too much to eat. Oh well, it looked delicious and I happily dived in. Do yourself a favor and take a strip of ham from the sandwich and eat it separately like I did; this way you can taste the true flavor of it. The goat cheese was cool, rich, and creamy. The zesty tomato and garlic spread really made the taste of the ham and cheese come together. Of course, all of this was packed between two thick, crusty slices of Spanish bread that was perfectly chewy.

    Overall, qué gran bocadillo!

As we were making our way out of Despaña with a ham buzz, there was an employee actually slicing slivers of meat by hand from a pig's leg in the very front! I stood there for a moment asking her questions as I was genuinely curious and she gave us samples of Serrano ham. Holy moly, it was even sweeter than the stuff in our sandwich! She then informed us that the reason it tasted even better was because she was slicing meat directly from on top of the bone. Interesting.

Despaña is truly a wonderful restaurant shop and I can't wait to come back to try more of their food plus their drink options! As of now, it's definitely as good as it gets in my mouth and mind. I just want more Serrano ham and I wanted it 5 minutes ago. I think it's time to book those tickets!

Yummy, yummy sandwiches!  Perfectly toasted, delicious bread, and great Spanish meats and cheeses.  It was so hard for me to decide which one I wanted!  I also love how there are samples everywhere - I tried so many different types of chorizos and cheeses (inluding La Serena!) and love that they encourage you to taste things, because they know you'll get hooked.  The only down side was that the pintxos we tried were ice cold, making it a little unpleasant to eat.  I will be back soon to stock up on Spanish ingredients, before stopping by at the wine store next door.

This is my favorite food spot after a soho shopping trip!

They have several samplings to enjoy from of specialty chorizos, oils, cheeses. It reminds me of a boutique deli/shop, and I always feel like I took a mini culinary trip to Spain when I step into Despana.

Some of my favorites include the chorizo sandwich (8.50) and the campera salad (ham and salami an cheese and onions and grape tomato) (7.50). They also have a variety of flautas which are "mini-sized version of sandwiches" and various desserts.

After you order your food, grab a communal seat towards the back that is stocked with Spanish olive oil, ground pepper and sea salt. Sometimes they even offer free olive oil chips!

Treat yourself to a beverage - manzana soda (apple soda )$2.5 or a horchata ($2) or coffee.

Everything is delightful here. You can't go wrong.

Caught the fever for manchego & chorizo in Spain last week and stumbled on Despana this week. The samples are plentiful, the flavors are great. The best part? It's completely reasonable! A half pound of the stinkiest Spanish take on blue cheese is $9.00. Hard to beat that even at the grocery store.

A little pricey but delicious ..

    Tried a few items:
    - Navarrico with smokey Chistorra sausage, served warm
    - Morcilla with piquillo pepper, served RT
    - El Quijote .. the sweet quince cream complemented the cured pork loin perfectly
    - Castanas flauta .. the sweet cream in this sandwich was a little too much and tasted way too sweet, overpowering the savory aspects
    - The chorizo tapas .. a lotta bang for your buck and super tasty ..

I wanted to buy churros, but the staff said they only give them away ... after trying it (and it was like chewing on cardboard), I was glad I didn't pay for it ..

My only other gripe is how little bread you're given .. when I asked for extra, I was told to buy a loaf, which would be overkill ):  ... maybe if I came with more people, I'd consider doing that.

Great lunch, great prices, wonderful area to sit in and enjoy said lunch. Had a meeting here today. The staff was highly personable and brings you all your food after you order. The blood sausage I had was incredibly delicious and nutritious. Don't be afraid to try it- it does not taste overly "meaty' or like iron. I also had a Serrano Ham salad and it was bursting with flavor, meat, cheese and greens. Very good value & will be back!

I think I would leave the bf if I could have a lifelong supply of Despana and there wonderfully crafted little mini appetizers and sandwiches.
    YES. IT. IS. THAT. SERIOUS.
Stopped in here on a whim, and was pleasantly surprised.
Despana, is what great food taste like, clean flavors, simple products, tons of flavor that will seriously take you as close to Spain as you can get...from Manhattan.
Ordered a few of the minis they had on display, and trust me you will love everything. The sardines, the tomatos, the chorizo, octopus, the prosciutto. I wish I could've sat there all day. The breads are not too "bready", but a nice crusty, airy, buttery....The sandwiches, oh the sandwiches, you will just have to experience it yourself. There is no need for any additional condiments, just maybe the additional drizzle olive oil.

I gave Despana five stars because it was perfect. It's a great specialty shop. A comfortable place without pretentiousness, nestled in Soho, with good food that makes you forget you had any other plans for the day...

I must admit, they have one of the amazing selections of assorted Spanish meats and cheeses I've ever seen. Sadly, some of their sandwiches doesn't live up to the ingredients, it almost feels as if they failed to meet their potential. I'd say purchase their products and make your own sandwiches at home!

New York needs more places like this. Well-executed, limited selection, reasonably priced high-quality food products. Prices are really reasonable particularly considering this is Soho. Good selection of little plates to eat in the small space in the back as well.

We came here yesterday for lunch and ordered 3 bocadillos and the octopus tapas. The three bocadillos we ordered the chorizo, catalan, and the despana.

The chorizo and the catalan sandwich were warm-pressed and enjoyable; but I felt the true star here was the despana. The combination of the serrano ham and the creamy goat cheese provided carnal pleasure for my mouth.

As for the octopus tapas, it was served with olive oil and paprika. It was sliced thinly, and it was wonderfully tender. Although, I was expecting the octopus to be served more whole.

Also, there are samples provided in the front counter which was a huge tasty plus.

Had the other two bocadillos lived up to the despana, I definitely would have given this establishment 5 stars!

Knew this place was something when I opened the door and noticed the scene stealer--vintage prosciutto and serrano ham slicing machines.  After lingering there for a few, my culinary delightness factor grew the longer I stayed.

What's there not to love? The great customer service, warm lighting and furnishings, and impressive array of products create an inviting environment worthy of more than a quick look. Who knew olive oil comes in different flavors like ginger, pomegranate, chocolate? Who knew charcuterie meats could be so fresh and not really salty? With lots of lots savory items to sample like cheese, salami, chorizo, dips and olive oil, you can't help but purchase something and since you've sampled it already, there's no room for disappointment or regret.

Take it from me-I tagged along with my friend who came here for the ham and I left with three items in my shopping bag.   And with prices on par or maybe even below Whole Foods, I'm bound to come back a few times.  To me, Despana is the mini Spanish version of Eataly minus the fuss, foot traffic and high prices. Salud!

I bought the Despana sandwich which has serrano ham slices, creamy goat cheese, and a tomato garlic spread. I liked the sandwich a lot but the bread was way too hard to bite into.  For about  $9, it' a bit pricey.

Horchata drink was alright.  Didn't really get much of an almond taste from it.

I am a simple man. Only looking for an extraordinary sandwich. Nestled in between Soho, Despana is a hidden treasure. Try any of their food, but the sandwiches, flan, and various chorizo are heavenly.

Yes, the prices may be steep (around $9-10 for a sandwich), but it's perfectly acceptable for Manhattan, and the quality of the ingredients and taste make it worth it~

This place has been a long time favorite of a close friend of mine. I took advantage of jury duty and checked this out for lunch. I had the bocadillo tortilla española as recommended by my friend. It was huge! And delish! I ate half and took the rest home. The pintxos looked great and the deli and specialty food section looked amazing too! I wanted to check out the wine store next door as well. I'll definitely be adding this place to my stock of go-to places for Spanish items.

Pricey but they have great chorizo, serrano ham, and assortment of cheeses and groceries stuff imported from Spain.

I had the Gallejo sandwich for $9.25, served warm with serrano ham, chorizo, and some sort of cheese (melted) on a bread with crusts. It was really simple but delicious!

Before I left, I browsed the meat and cheese counter. The lady there was really nice, she gave me a tasting of chorizo, dry cured pork loin, and two kinds of cheeses. I ended up buying some chorizo and one of the cheese to go for total of $7. They are so yummy. In fact, I am currently writing this review while munching on Despana's chorizo & cheese, and Stacy's pita chips. Nothing better than to write reviews while your taste buds are being pampered by the very food you are trying to write about! =)

Definitely worth the trip down from midtown!

What a wonderful little shop Despaña is. The counter and seating area at the back are nice, and they make cute little tapas, pintxos, and flautas that make for a satisying lunch. But I've become a regular for their produce. Their selection of canned and jarred seafood is incomparable in the city - high-quality brands like Cabo de Peñas that are above and beyond what you'll find elsewhere, and at very reasonable prices for said quality. Their counter o' pork, as well, has some real treats: the morcilla (blood sausage) and lomo embuchado (cured pork loin) are among the best I've had in NYC, and they slice their Iberico by hand - which, while expensive, is still cheaper than at many other establishments. Great place to grab a quick bite or put together a meal for later at home. One of NYC's newest treasures, there's no other store quite like them.

What can I say about a place fills my stomach with the deliciousness that I have not had since living in Madrid or traveling to San Sebastian? All of the pintxos I have had are superb.  There is no doubt.  I would recommend coming here for the food and the cafe con leche, but be aware that the service is rather Spanish like as well.  Which if you have been to Spain, you'll know what I mean.

    My only qualms:
    1. Price, uy.  I then have to remind myself that I'm in SoHo and not in Madrid or San Sebastian.
    2. It's in SoHo.

I was drooling even before I stepped inside Despana! I couldn't help it as there were all these Jamon hanging right in front of the windows.. And they were no decoration!!

Of course you can be like my yelp friend buy all the ingredients and try to make and prepare the tapas at home.. or just like .. go in and want to try every single cooked and ready to eat Tapas at the back of the store! But I ended up able to sample:

Tortilla with Serrano ham $4.25 - really meh and way too salty.. my friend kept raving how good her own version is, I guess I have to come back to NYC just to try that out!

Pintxos Serrano y Queso Manchego (Serrano Ham and Manchego Cheese) $3.50 and Pintxo El Quijote (Dry cured pork loin, Manchego cheese) $3.50 - both excellent, but I am bias as I love cured ham... fatty, flavoured and just melt in your mouth...

Morcilla with Piquillo Pepper (Blood Sauage) $3.50 - always like blood sauage... and the pepper gave it a spicy kick!

Horchata (traditional milky like drink made from almond)  $2.00 - like soy  milk but made have a really nutty flavour and is a little heavy

They were all tasty and made me feel like I am vacation somewhere in Spain.. not in NYC...

I now can endorse Despana as all those yelpers that came before me that had an excellent experience and rave about how good Despana is!!!

After having this on my to-do list for the past 2 months, I finally made it in here today.

Unfortunately, it did not live up to the hype in my mind. The hot chocolate was such a disappointment. But then again, I am comparing it to the ones I have had in Spain. And when you make comparisons, you are bound to look disappointment in the eye. Luckily, the hot chocolate was the only bad part of this excursion.

The serrano ham (aged 15 months) melts in your mouth. Cured to perfection and excellent in a bocadillo.  I also thoroughly enjoyed the Manchego Joven cheese. Light and mild, just the way I like it. Yes, call me a pansy. I can only take the stinkier varieties on occasion. The Oveja Al Romero also floats my boat.  Throw in a handful of Marcona almonds and a glass of Tempranillo and I am in paradiso.

This store is your go-to if you are missing Spain. Here you will find:
    Bocarones
    Turrones
    Aceite de Oliva
    Acetunas
    Jamon Iberico
    Jamon Serrano
    Quesos de Espana
    Pate
    Almendras Marcona
    Chorizos

How I miss you Spain. Thanks to Despana for helping me to relive some of those good memories.

I don't even know where to begin. Despana's sandwiches consistently bring me to my knees. Thinking about them now, my mouth is watering. I feel like that french bulldog in that video on youtube who's trained not to eat until his owner says he can, but he's so hungry, and there's just saliva dripping everywhere. That is how badly I want a Despana sandwich right now. I haven't tried all of them, but I've tried a lot (my friend and I have a system where we'll each order different ones and trade halves), and in my experience you can't go wrong. I think my favorites would have to be the Picante (which full to bursting with spicy chorizo), the Despana (the meat-to-goat cheese ratio is orgasmic), the Gallego (the combination of serrano ham, chorizo, and cheese gets me hot and bothered), and the Navarrico (the peppers in this make me starry eyed).

And make sure to get your sandwich to-go so you don't feel self-conscious about the o-face you will undoubtedly make upon biting into it. You will. You will! Don't fight it.

My visits to Despana are few and far between and usually take place at the beginning of the month when my bank account is still flush, but oh how I savor those trips.

I start off my visit by unabashedly sticking toothpicks into every cheese, meat, and olive sample that they have to offer. I then study the menu to find a sandwich that features my new favorite cheese, and place my order with the friendly cashiers. The salads are pre-made and come out immediately with a little baggy of crusty bread, and the sandwiches are usually out in under 5 minutes. Sandwiches and salads are both around $9, and are a good size, but not enough for 2 meals.

I try something new most every time I go, but my stand out favorite is the Ei Quijote, a pork and manchengo cheese sandwich with some sort of quince spread that nails the savory/sweet flavor profile. You can also try most of the sandwiches in 'tapas' form for a few dollars.

Despana is such a lovely, humble, and amazing Spanish deli located in soho. I would say it is a must go, especially for anyone who lives near me... in Texas. We can't get anything close to the quality of products at this place. There's quite an assortment of cheeses, meats (jamon/chorizo), and olive oil up for sample when you come in.

It's easy to forget what really good cheese or pork tastes like. The sandwiches here are very rustic and simple, but they hit a really nice sweetspot with me. (pic included)

Be aware that the price can really add up if you're not careful. Also seating is very limited, so keep that in mind when dining in.

I had a hankering for morcilla (blood sausage), and Despaña filled that void in my day. You walk in alongside a refrigerated deli counter with lots of cheese and sausage items that you can purchase to bring home. In the back, there's another serving area where you order pre-prepared tapas. I did find it a bit annoying that they didn't serve alcohol. The man behind the counter told me that you had to buy an entire bottle of wine in their other storefront next door, and they would open it for you. I only wanted one glass, so I didn't bother. I ordered a cup of coffee instead. They said they had to brew it, and I had to wait about 10 minutes, which was longer than I expected though. I want to come back to try some of their other tapas the next time I'm in the neighborhood.

This place is one possible reason why the Spanish food in New York is so much better than the Spanish food in Boston. It's been more than 2 months since I returned from Spain, and the place has brought back some great food memories when I was in Malaga and Seville. I decided to get a bocadillo and a tapa dish. A bocadillo is a Spanish term for a sandwich served in a baguette.

I decided to go for this sandwich called the Despaña. This consists of jamón serrano (mountain ham in Spanish), goat cheese, and a tomato garlic spread. Despite the deceptively simple appearance of the sandwich, I slowly began to take a bite.

The bread was pretty good, nice and chewy. The jamón serrano tasted almost exactly like the jamón serrano that I ate in Spain, slightly salty, and flavorful. However, the goat cheese, it was amazingly delicious and it just made the sandwich even better. The goat cheese combined with the flavorful jamón serrano, plus the garlic spread, gave my palate and tongue an amazing sense of euphoria and bliss. I'm talking about the kind of really amazing euphoria and bliss that you get as if you just kissed the lips of a really gorgeous girl that you would want to hang out with quite often. It's probably one the best bocadillos I have eaten since I left Spain.

As for tapas, I only had one dish. When I was in Malaga, one tapas dish I first learned about and ate was Morcilla, which is a type of a spiced blood sausage. The dish I got was a Morcilla con Tomate, which is Morcilla doused in a tomato sauce. It was also deliciously tasty. The meat was really juicy and flavorful, almost better than the Morcilla I had in Malaga. The tomato sauce was also tasty, not too thick and not watery, almost the ideal tomato sauce for al dente spaghetti.

As for the interior, liked the simple marble table set up. There's a market that sells Spanish ingredients, so if I wanted to make some decent Spanish meals while living in New York, I would probably go there.

Overall, despite the somewhat steep prices for the bocadillos and tapas, I believe I have eaten some of the tastiest Spanish food in New York so far. If I really want to bring back some great food memories of Spain, I would probably turn to this place when I am in New York.

    I love Spain.
    I love New York.
I really liked eating at this place.

Despana es delicioso!  There were so many things that I wanted to try on this menu, it was actually a bit frustrating!  I had a hard time choosing.  I went with the Gazpacho to start, because I adore Gazpacho.  It was creamy, well-balanced, and delicioso, with the perfect amount of fresh tomato flavor.

After this, we ordered a few tapas to share:  Chorizos con castanas, which pairs the spice of chorizo with sweet, slighty glazed chestnuts;  marinated spanish and greek olives, and a grilled octopus dish with olive oil and paprika.

    Volvere!
