Review from Louise G.
How could I have not tried this place before now? Seriously????
As daughter is vegetarian we're always looking for good veggie options when we all go out. We were in the area to go to a play at The Cultch, and we needed food. Often we try and think of mainstream places to go that might offer vegetarian, but HELL, we all love vegetarian so we've now decided to explore vegetarian places. Which brought us to Deserts On The Drive.
Daughter and I ordered the vegetarian curry plate which included two types of veggie curry, rice, naan and salad. It was a giant serving of food for just $7. It could easily make two meals. My honey had the chick pea plate which also came with rice and salad. Also $7 and also a very good deal.
Very tasty. Very large portions. We overate as it was too good and we couldn't stop until it was too late. Friendly service. -

I discovered this place thanks to a guy I have a massive crush on. We biked around and ended up at this gem. Reasonable price for a a plateful of different stuff. Pretty good naan here. I prefer a hole in the wall looking place to some swanky Indian place.
Weird name tho! If I was just biking around I would assume it was a desert place. -

Oh my yum!
Yes, I agree with the other reviews. This place certainly does not get any points for ambience. It looks like a dive. But the food is oh-so-delicious. And the price is el cheapo. $7 for a plate of yum. What's a plate of yum you say? Brown rice, naan, 2 curries (with some yoghurt and salsa at the side of the plate). It was a dee-licious dish. I will definitely be back again. -

While I agree with Simon R's review, I do have a soft spot in my heart for Deserts..
When I first moved to Vancouver and was starting to make some friends..one of them lived on the Drive and was a total hippy..I thought I was sooo cool knowing someone that had dreads and wore linen and masked their body oder with patchouli...did I mention I grew up in Saskatchewan...not many hippies..
Anyway...he took me to Deserts and I was a bit in awe...it was the most..rustic..for lack of a better word..place I had ever been to...it wasn't that clean..you could help yourself to a glass of water from a pitcher that looked like it had never been washed...and people preparing your food didn't seem too keen on food health and safety..but meh..I was now a city boy with a hippy friend!!
He ordered me my very first falafel...I was terrified to eat it as I had never experienced one...ground chic peas that are deep fried doesn't really sound appealing to a boy that grew up eating steak 4 days of the week..but much to my surprise I actually liked it...and more importantly.. didn't get food poisoning!!
I have never been back...the friend turned out to be way to "damn the man" for my liking and would scold me if I shopped at places like Costco or watched Julia Roberts movies...and so I never went to the Dive much..but mostly I never went back because I had a falafel somewhere else and realized that the one a Deserts was actually quite terrible...but the experience is something I will never forget! -

A classic example of "It looked better in the dark"
Returned to this place in day light this time and felt REALLY grossed out. Still ate here again anyways since my first experience went so well in my memory. Food was still pretty good, not quite as fantastic as I remember, but still fairly decent.
I just really wish they would clean the place up a little bit. It would make me feel less sketched out about the food.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Okay, I admit it I thought it was a dessert place. Oops! Desert, not Dessert. That explains the cacti on the hand painted sign, duhhh !
So, understanding that this is a lunch or quick grub place that yes, has deSSerts, changes one's view.
I don't think I've ever seen a "Falatka" on a menu before- LoL so, points for resourceful vegetarian creations. The dishes are home cooked like "Aunti" makes them. We will be back here soon. -

It looks pretty authentic to me, but I can't say I'm an expert. I ordered a samosa and I thought it was delicious. They have them prepared before hand and then they deep fry them for you after you order it. Plus it was super cheap - $1.50. I would definitely go back and try more things.

Im gonna say this place is a hit-or-miss depending when you go.
I've been there three times and I'm still not sure if id go back. Falafel can be done right with your eyes closed so no points there.
Where the place does shine is value. Large portions for a great price.
Get a cookie to go! -

Serving up falafels and thick soups, Deserts is a vegetarian restaurant where hippies meet and talk about social justice, and discuss how deodorant is evil and unnatural. There is a grass roots feel to the small interior and outdoor picnic bench, and that's also kind of what the food tastes like, grass roots. All kidding aside, the fudge bars are delicious, and the food is reasonably priced. I'd still check for dirt under the fingernails of the cook though.

Tasty falafels are a rare thing in this city - the Lebanese are only starting to expand out and get a toehold, and many of them are looking to charge $6.50 and $7.50 for falafels just like mom made back home. In cities where they have been for longer, falafels are like pizza slices - a standby. Not like on the Drive where a few of the shops are run by well-meaning and spice-averse people who have never set foot in the middle east or a middle eastern or mediterranean restaurant...
Deserts bucks this trend. They deserve some goodwill for being the first place I saw falafels here in the late '90s, and almost the only place. The cook has never smoked in the kitchen, unlike in some of the early competition. The fact that they actually use real lettuce, give you some pickles and tomato salad on top, and generally provide more than minimum sauces on your generally affordable falafel is a nice crunchy bonus. They always seem to cook the falafels when I order, too. I've never had anything 'off' at Deserts, though the floors could be newer and the tables cleaner. Then, I think that I'm not paying for waitstaff, and many diners around town are equally sticky.
Deserts endures for this reason. Ignore the granoly people at the next table and revel in a tasty, healthy, fusiony, fresh, filling lunch or dinner, made early or late, with little attitude - the cook/cashier is very cheerful! -

Latke, falafel or Falatke sanwich are an amazing experience
