Was back in Philly last weekend. Worry not - Denise's was back in its faithful location, a block from 30th st station. I had a small jerk chicken platter with mac & cheese and rice & beans, with a big bottle of water, for $8. It was fantastic, it was fast, and it was a good deal.

I coerced my girlfriend - who is terrified of food trucks - to try some of the chicken, and even she was impressed. Can't go wrong with this place!

What started off as a bad night turned good quickly.

I was stranded at the 30th street station because I missed my Bolt bus. I was now waiting for the next train into NYC and feeling pretty hungry.

I floated around the station and stumbled upon Denise's Soul Food. Before the food even touched my mouth, I knew I had stumbled onto something special.

I got the fried chicken, mac n' cheese, candied yams, and corn bread. The chicken was juicy and full of flavor. The mac n' cheese was gooey just like it should be. And, the candied yams was mushy, sweat, and bursting with flavor. The corn bread was tasty in its own right.

First off, this place has no right being a counter stand in a train station. It should be a restaurant with seating and tons of people. It is freaking awesome.

I would say it is worth checking out even if you don't have a train to catch.

Christopher R's Guide To Eating In Philadelphia On Only $4 A Day

Day 1: Buy a small jerk chicken platter with greens, rice & beans and a side of corn bread from Denise's Soul Food.  ($7.75)  Even though the food is amazing, you will only be able to eat half.

Day 2: Eat the remainder of the jerk chicken platter.  ($0.00) It will still be delicious.  You now have 25 cents left.  Attempt to buy a pack of gum before being informed that gum has not cost that much for several years.  The store employee will laugh at you and confiscate your money as consequence for your ignorance.  ($0.25)

Although I usually do not frequent food trucks on the basis that they are unsanitary, I can not resist Denise's. Faithfully parked outside of 30th Street Station everyday, their food rivals that of some of the best restaurants that I have visited. This Caribbean and soul food truck makes their items fresh daily and everything is all natural and never from a can.

Everything that I have tried has been delicious. From the chicken wings to the curried chicken to the jerk chicken to the side of yams and greens, I have never had a bad experience there. Also, the lemonade is the best that I have tasted. Ever.

The only down side is that the truck is so popular that there is often a line. Don't worry though, it is worth the wait.

    This truck is awesome.

Haven't been to any of the soul / carribean trucks around the city before this one, but Denises was an awesome introduction. Got the jerk chicken which was insane. Got the candied yams which where beyond insane.  Got some cornbread which was awesome (and they gave me like 1/4 a loaf). And I got the mac and cheese which was good, but not insane.

Once I go to more soul trucks I will adjust my rating, but for real this truck was beyond great.

After a failed attempt to eat at Hemo's (DAMN YOU, TOURGUIDE!!!!), I was happy to pass this food truck on my way back to the train station.  I ordered a small chicken platter with collard greens and yams for $8.  It was heavy and smelled oh-so-tasty, but waited to eat it until I got home.

The chicken had great flavor (chipotle, lots of pepper) but it was tough.  The collard greens were SUPER bitter (yes I know they're supposed to be bitter, but these seemed out of control).  The yams were kind of dried out.

All in all, I've had better "soul food", and I think I would have preferred Hemo's.

The ever present pink truck outside of 30th Street Post Office serves up generous $6 platters of Caribbean food seven days a week and is an awesome spot for quick / good / inexpensive eats.  My only lament is not getting over there more frequently.   Be warned that parking in the post office parking spaces is frowned upon and you may be chased off.

I saw this truck last October when we had come out to look for housing and after we moved here I kept looking for it but I wasn't quite sure where it had been. Well the other day I stumbled across it and now I'm mad at myself for being so lax about searching it out. The food is crazy delicious --  I ordered the oxtails, which were by far the best I've ever had and (they were out of jerk chicken) fried chicken, which was also good (but I'm still pouting over the missed jerk.) With the two plates (I might mention I ordered the small) came 2 sides each so I also got the  mac n' cheese (meh) , the greens (yum,) Beans and rice (I think I prefer peas and rice) and the yams (wow.) The portions are huge (did I mention I ordered the small) and the husband and I could easily have split one order so no we have at least 3 meals to look forward to.
