Emeryville, CA
5 stars based on the following:
* Randomly found this place while on vacation and everyone made us feel like we were a local
* Gave very thoughtful recommendations for wine and food
* Jay and Alia (SP) were so fun and engaging that we went back a second night for dinner
* The chef (sorry forgot her name) is amazing!!!! Everything she served was memorable
So I know that 5 stars is a lot for a foodie but it really all came together nicely for a small wine bar in the village. -

Outstanding. Went there on a cold Wednesday night while wandering the wastelands West Village. Great location for people watching (large windows and corner view), warm woody bar, large space. The server/bartender was ridiculously helpful and friendly....and was actually really funny. Made great recommendations.
I had an excellent duck sandwich with fresh artisan bread and figs. When the server recommended the "duck sandwich, images of Donald/Daffy/Scrooge Mc Duck grouchily smooshed between two giant pieces of wonderbread flashed thru my mind, but was amazingly tasty and paired perfectly with the spicy red I was recommended.
Definitely going back! -

If I could put 0 stars I would have...
My night was going well until I entered this establishment. It was my best friend, my husband and I. We sat at a table ordered our cheese plate and 3 glasses of wine. The wine glass was basically empty meanwhile they were untouched. We asked to speak to the manager and a guy with his red beany and flannel shirt showed up and said he was the owner. We discussed our dilemma and he said if you don't like it LEAVE. Now who orders a glass of wine and expects to see a basically empty wine glass and receive horrendous customer service and end up with a bad night. DON'T COME HERE... I suggest Lela Bar on Hudson Street near Leroy Street which is just a block away going West where the wine selection and taste is better, the food is wonderful and best of all the customer service is amazing. -

Excellent wine selection, service, and a really nice selection of small plates and sandwiches. Would definitely come back. The space is really nice too.

I've never written a review for a restaurant before, but I found one last week, Demande, that was so good, I had to tell the world. First, let me say that my friend and I didn't go out specifically for this restaurant, but really just to try a new bar. We stumbled upon Demande, which is on 7th Avenue, by accident, and just the beauty of the place, with its wide windows and candlelit interior, made us go in.
From the inside, the place is even more spectacular. Picture a glass arrow pointing downtown into where BBBBB becomes 7th. The view is beautiful. Everything inside is dark, with flickering candles.
At first, my friend and I just started with drinks: the wine was good, not too expensive, and we followed it up with sake, which the day after proved to be a bad move, but which that night, felt just great. The bartender, Sheena, was smiling, helpful and very beautiful, and she was working with Jay, who was great.
We weren't even hungry at first, but sake has a mind of its own, and soon we were looking at menus. I started ff with lamb belly, which came with pickled vegetables and cilantro aioli, which was fantastic. The lamb was moist (unlike the dry stringy cardboard that passes for lamb in so many restaurants), and it went perfectly with the aioli. Really good.
The friend I was with had the duck prosciutto panino, which was what I was originally going to have, until I saw that it came with rhubarb jam, because I usually don't like sweet tastes in my food, whatever people say about contrast in taste. But again, sake speaks for itself, and after some insistence, I tried the duck, which was wonderful, and which actually went really nicely not just with its taleggio cheese, but also with the jam, because the jam somehow wasn't sweet. It was really one of the best panini I've ever tasted, and I really like panini.
One thing though: lamb and duck go better with wine than with sake. Obvious, I know, but I thought it was worth a mention.
By this time, since it was a slow night, we'd met the two chefs, Solange and Alea, who were really friendly and who laughed about my reticence to try sweet foods. Since we were still a little hungry and needed something to absorb the sake, my friend and I decided to share the fish tacos, which ended up going better with sake. They were very good, crunchy and a little spicy from the poblano chili peppers, but since they came with a mix of black beans and cream, we could have toned down the spiciness if we'd wanted to (but we didn't).
This was a Thursday night, and the place was a little empty, which gave us the chance to meet just about everyone who works at Demande, and beside the food, meeting them was a high point of the night. I kind of liked having the place to ourselves, which was another reason I hesitated to write this review, but the food, the space and the people were just so great that I had to say something. When the weather warms up a little more, the outside seating is going to make this place a dream, and my only worry is that the next time I go there, I won't be able to get a seat.
Demande was for me yet another proof why it always pays to wander in Manhattan and try a new place. Great food, spectacular space, warm and welcoming people. Truly one of my best restaurant experiences in the last year. -

CANAL STREET, NY
I have been wanting to try this place since it's somewhat close to my office and they have a lunch deal. After walking for 10 minutes today in the 100 degree heat, I arrive only to discover they are closed. At 1:45 pm on a Thursday. They are supposed to be open at noon and when I knocked on the locked door to get the attention of the guy inside he told me they weren't open yet because they didn't have a waiter. Seriously? One person doesn't show and you can't open up your restaurant? I was disappointed and annoyed, but good luck staying in business. Might be hard to do if you aren't open when people expect you to be. Doesn't really inspire people to make a return visit!

Wow, this little new cozy Wine / Sake bar in the West Village is easily one of my favorite places du jour. I walked in with very little expectations but walked out a super fan. Let's start with the amazing food menu - served tapa-ish style. The menu was not flashy at first read but holy moly, after sampling a few dishes, we wanted more. They served fresh organic stuff and procured from local farms and markets. Jar of pickled vegs, awesome; loved the sweet potato fries; the pork with chocolate fondue was good but a bit on the salty side; the meatballs with carmellized onion was amazing; so was the bone marrow bruschetta; the shrimp on toast with local market broccolli was just fresh + awesome, as was the squid; loved the chilean sea bass. wine selection was great too (tho I am not a wine expert) Everyone liked the bordeaux as well as the spanish Montsant. We were not too crazy about the Cote de Rhone but there was plenty to choose from. Dessert was just super yummy paired with the right "milk and cookie" sake. I'll be back and will point my friends to this little gem! Can't wait till the weather gets better for their planned outdoor seating.
