OK, disclaimer. I am spoiled. I spend loads of time in Mexico, driving, sailing, and busing in and between small towns. This is only applicable because it has made me a Mexican food snob. I'm not a fan of Tex-Mex. I like my Mexican food just that, Mexican.

After being refereed here by a close friend, who has also traveled extensively in Mexico, and shares my same taste in food, I trusted it would be awesome.

Coming into the Courtenay location late on a Sunday, the staff was excellent. One owner, one staff member, who were previous co-workers from a Nanaimo location. They were welcoming, and greeted us warmly, explaining a few things and suggesting top sellers.

The case was filled with fresh, house-made, creative salads, and rice sides. The feel of the room is warm and friendly, no kitchy north of the border attempt at being Mexican. Bar seating or table, grab your cutlery and water and head for a table after you order. They'll bring it out to you.

There were two of us, we tried the bean (veggie) Enchilada with the Baja Salad, which was a mix of diced fresh raw veggies, and a Southwest chicken wrap. It was excellent. Great flavour for the beans, not slathered in cheese, and the salad was the reason we returned the following day for lunch.

Going back on Monday, the owner recognized us and she welcomed us back. Three more enchiladas, but sadly no Baja salad. Tried another I've now forgotten the name of, but again a raw veg mix, seasoned perfectly.

So, it's not entirely authentic Mexican, (though I don't know if it's actually claiming to be) but it's a wonderfully fresh approach to incorporating the best of Mexico and it's simple traditional dishes, paired with fresh salads, which of course aren't often served, but greatly missed, in Mexico.

Great spot for lunch or dinner, local family business, I will be back next time in the Comox Valley for sure. My only "beef"? Are they using local ingredients, meats? It's not obvious, but of course doesn't mean it isn't happening.
