Review from Clare L.
I hungout with my Mom in Richmond and she suggested we tried this restaurant, she said it's been hugely popular with many people she knew and always had a lot people lined up. I asked her why this restaurant was good, and she said you can build your own noodle soup meal. I'll admit that my so-called enthusiasm at this point in time was not exactly showing because I didn't see the thrilling possibilities that I was about to experience. We had about a 35 minute wait, which we spent shopping at the stores beside, and we got seated at a table with another duo.
Im a huge fan of the century egg, and seeing a parsley, century egg fish stock soup base was great! (I know it's not typically a favourite for everyone, so not to worry there are many more choices for your soup base.) You can also choose the type of noodles you would like, from rice noodles, vermicelli, ramen, korean yam noodles, and more!
I was slightly confused by the toppings and side orders, but then I realized that they didn't necessarily have to be in your noodle soup, and so we got a fish filet, and some chicken wings. My mom and I weren't too hungry, so this was actually a meal that we shared. We had this menu paper style that we checked off on our own what we wanted and then the server came by and collected it. I found the soup broth very tasty, century egg and all. the fish was tasty, and so were the chicken wings! It was really inexpensive because we shared (and we were able to take the rest home for another meal!) but I thought about prices of eating out in Vancouver, and I still found it pretty cheap, and good bang for your buck.
I'm looking forward to coming back and trying different combinations when I can! -

Delicious~~!!! I love soupy rice noodles.
When my friend introduced me to this place my initial thought was why can't they have one like this in LA?
Affordable, HOT fish broth, choice of toppings, noodles and side dishes then you are done!!!
Don't order their drinks though. Its really bad. -
Review from Dan T.
If this place opened in New York, it would most certainly give Ippudo or Totto Ramen a run for their money.
Foregoing the usual pork or chicken-based broth, Deer Garden does an amazing job of coaxing out deep and lush flavours from a fish soup base. The noodles are also good, although I have to say that childhood memories always have me reaching for what they unceremoniously dub the "instant noodles".
The sides are mostly worthwhile, but a stand out dish would be the grilled beef tongue. Admittedly quite heavily seasoned, the generous cut and brilliant tenderness of each piece was just awesome. Even if the noodle combo wasn't as good as it was, the beef tongue alone would be a dish that would have me coming back for more. -

Short origin story: Owner used to work with Cattle Cafe owners downstairs, and what I can only guess to be a fall out, decided to open up Deer Garden. This time they focused only on soups & noodle combo's. Which is very smart, and they do it well. If you compare just the soup/noodle combo's.. Deer Garden is a 2 thumbs up, where as Cattle is a sore thumb.
Deer Garden does their soup base well (with no MSG), and they have great standard fillings before your choice of goods. They have this wonderful soft beancurd/tofu, and tons of vegetables. So delicious!! My favorite is their malay laksa, with choice of beef ball, and fish tofu, or tofu puff :) They also have a small selection of sides for $1.50 (chicken wings, fried tofu puff, etc..). But for the amount of food in your one bowl of noodles, I might suggest you skip out on the sides first.
Due to the vicinity of Richmond, and their arched rivals located directly below them, they have to be price driven. Therefore, their nommy noodle combo with drink comes to ~$8. A dollar extra for a cold drink, 2 dollars extra to upgrade to a special drink.
Parking can be more troublesome than other places. But I recommend atleast a try, especially if you're craving for something soupy and noodly. Walk up the stairs past Cattle. It's worth those extra steps! Mmmm Malay Laksa with Udon! mmmm!
Come before 6PM to avoid long lines!
and yes, this is a CASH ONLY establishment.Listed in: Asian Cafe's

Deer Garden Signatures has recently expanded their operations from 2nd floor Alexandra location (2015-8580 Alexandra Road) to Continental Mall where parkings are plentiful. No need to fight for a spot and circle for hours! The restaurant is newly renovated, spacious and bright... A great destination for lunch or a quick bite one would think....
Perhaps it is because it just grand opened, service is terribly slow! I came here with a colleague during lunch hour - arrived just before noon and ordered 2 bowls of noodles. One came about 15 mins after while the 2nd never arrived until we inquired about it. The second bowl did not arrive until 12:40pm. The waitress was walking around to various different tables with our Laska, walking to and from the kitchen before arriving at the correct table - our table. By this time, the noodles were cold and we our patience level was shot.

Out of 5... (1: Don't bother -- 5: Excellent)
Food: 2.5
Service: 2.0
Ambiance: 3.0
Overall: 2.5
Unfortunately I wish that I had all the time in the world for lunch, but alas I'm a poor working citizen. By this time the line up was out the door... To contribute to the madness, the interior space maximization is a fail; although spacious, the 6 person table does not maximize occupancy - there were a lot of parties of 3 seating on a 6 person table. A smart thing would be to impose 4 person table and 2 person table; mix and match as occupancy increase or decrease... anyways that's another story.
The Milk Tea was too sweet, lacked kick and has a weird sour after-taste that lasted for hours...
The service was slow and unprofessional; tables without utensils, servers pretending not to see you when you flag them down - even when you want to pay. Chili oil were served in little plastic cups you see in food courts. Cold drinks are served in plastic to-go cups (actually this was not a bad idea since usually we can't finish it and take it away anyways). Esthetically not please however.
Apologies (actually not really) if I appear to harsh on this newly expanded Deer Garden but I feel that as customers we needn't have to 'break them in' or along for them to 'oil their engines'.
Tong Yum Gong with fish balls, fish slices and tofu puffs:
Delish Thai styled hot and sour shrimp broth. Everything about this soup was generally good except it seems that the ingredients has been downsized.
Laksa Noodles with fish slices and beef brisket slices:
Laksa is an unique soup-base which blends Chinese and Malay cooking styles together. This coconut based curry tasty broth is missing curry and coconut freshness. It tastes creamy, milky, watered down. Fish slices are fishy and has a very "frozen" tastes - something that has been in the freezer too long...
Chicken Wings (side dish) for $1.50 extra
Nothing special, just your regular deep fried chicken. Again downsized from 4 wings per dish to only 3... so that's 50 cents per
The positives:
Their menu is extensive with large selection of noodles, snacks, and drinks
Reasonable prices
Mix and match
No MSG
Plentiful parking spaces in a central location
Some Hong Kong café items
Customize / mix and match noodle bowls
Mini combos available
The negatives:
Downsized of ingredients and quality
Broths are watered down
Terribly slow services
Cash only -

This place was first introduced to me by a good friend and I enjoyed every piece of noodle that was in that bowl. I then introduced it to my parents and they loved it too. When ever we are trying to figure out where to eat, we'll say "let's go to deer garden". the noodles and the curry are my number one choice. My dad loves the chicken wings there.
for the price of $7.95 for a bigger bowl of noodles compared to pho, it is definitely a way better deal! -

Great place to have a big bowl of noodles in your favourite fish soup. Be warn, this restaurant is always packed all day long. People recognize this spot as a really good value especially the locals in Richmond. It's a little difficult to find Deer Garden first time around as it's hidden on top of Cattle Cafe on Alexandra Rd. I wouldn't bother parking on the second floor because there will be no spots available, trust me.
They specialize in noodle soup combos in which you choose your soup base, 2 toppings, noodles, coffee or tea, and side dishes cost $1.50 each. If you want more toppings, it'll cost you an extra loonie for each. They have a step-by-step order form in Chinese and English, so it's pretty easy to order. The more difficult part is to decide which combinations to order as the choices are quite extensive.
I ordered the watercress and almond base with brisket / cuttlefish balls and vermicelli noodles. The brisket was tender and thinly sliced and the cuttlefish balls were marvellous with a little bounce to them. The fish broth was rich and flavourful but I found the laksa to be more tasty then the watercress/almond. The soup base also contained some dried bean curd and veggies. The cilantro with each bowl was a perfect touch and gave it an amazing fragrance. The soup base didn't smell fishy at all (really!) which is a good indication of the quality of their cooking.
I have to say this style of noodle combo is very similar to Cattle Cafe and the differences between them are not very noticeable. The service might be lacking to some patrons but it's standard to Asian restaurants. The place is always packed and I can't blamed the staff to be a bit impatient as they are always hurried and running around the place with big bowls of noodles. It's quite a balancing act as I see them carrying 4 big steaming bowls of noodles avoiding customers, tables and chairs.
They offer other dishes as well like steamed rice and curry combos.
Did I mention the soup base contains no MSG! The portions are humongous, some may not be able to finish the whole bowl. You can always share with me anytime.
No MSG, big portions, great value, customizable and costing $7.95 certainly deserves a solid 4 star. -

We have tried a number of fish soup noodle restaurants recently because of this place. Now we undeniably agree with Deer Garden Signature's claim that they are ther best in town.
For $7.95, you get your choice of soup base, noodle type, two toppings, and even a drink. There is a good variety of hot pot rice, grilled appetizers, and sandwiches on their menu, but these items are less popular only because their signature fish noodle soup is so delicious.
There are two locations now, so the crowds are a bit smaller at the original Alexandra location. But the difference is merely 12/10 busy to 15/10 busy!
With the vast variety of soups and toppings, one would need to come here at least a good dozen times in order to sample them all. Let me know what is your favourite!1 Previous Review: Show all »

I believe that there are more rice noodles in fish soup than dim sum places in Richmond now. I have no idea why because it's so easy to cook at home! Anyways, let's review Deer Garden's noodles:
Soup base is OK; the owner claiming no MSG (I doubt it)
noodles is OK; but the side dishes are NOT.
Do not order the beef tongue; it's the biggest and tasteless I have ever tried in my life.
Other thing is so-so and relatively cheap, if you don't mind to wait and wait, it's not a bad bad choice. -

Deer Garden is one of the best HK Cafes out there. Even their curry is comparable to Mui Garden, which is pretty darn good. Their portions are huge; sometimes I even want to tell them to put less noodles in the soup because I don't want to waste it. Their soup bases and ingredients taste much fresher than Cattle which is downstairs. The only thing is you can never find parking here during peak hours, and street parking is paid. If I ever venture into Richmond, it's likely just to come here.

The times I've made my way up here, it has usually been for their homey tasting noodle soup bowls. It's almost as comparable to the noodle soup bowls @ Cattle Cafe (right below Deer Garden), however, I find that Deer Garden fills your bowl to the very top with hot soup and ingrediants, especially more veggies are given. I always go for the vermicelli noodles with luncheon meat (for a seared kick of salty spam) and enoki mushroom (which they cut up and don't just give a huge chunk for you to knaw at). Deer Garden is also much bigger than Cattle Cafe but I do enjoy the look of Cattle more. Regardless, a good place to enjoy a hot, made-to-your-fixings noodle soup place.
Also, if it's really busy, and it usually is, don't fret because take-out is great too. They separate the noodles, so by the time you drive home the moddles aren't super soggy. Slurp on noodle lovers!Listed in: A warm hug on a cold day

Review from Annie W.
Have been a few times for dinner, and luckily both times I was there with a large group so have had the opportunity to sample quite a few of their offerings.
The Situation - You get a noodle order form and pick your soup base, noodles, two toppings, and a basic drink for $7.50. Add-ons like chicken wings or fried pork chop are at an extra $1.50, and you can upgrade to a premium drink for another $2.00. They also have a separate a-la-carte menu if you're not in the mood for noodles, but if that's the case why are you even here?
The Noodles - I'm a BIG fan of their Laksa, Century Egg, and Watercress soup bases. Found the Szechuan and Pumpkin ones to be rather boring. For toppings I stuck with the beef brisket which were super tender and a generous portion, as well as fish or cuttle fish balls.
The Drinks - This is probably one of their weak points. While the drinks are perfectly acceptable, don't be surprised if your slush comes as a smoothie, vice versa, or doesn't come at all. Which brings me to my next point...
The Service - Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. The waitresses are overwhelmed, rude, and pushy.
Sigh...it's too bad I'm a bit addicted to their laksa noodle soup, otherwise I'd avoid this place like the plague. -

Went there for lunch with a friend.
I ordered seafood green(?) curry, and my friend ordered pork chop green (?) curry!
when the order came, we were SO surprised!!
the portions are HUGE!!!!!!!!!!! not only its huge for me... but it was also huge for my friend, and yea he was a guy....!!
I managed to stuff myself (because I didn't want to waste SO much, but still had rice left over) and my friend, since he mixed all of the rice and curry in the beginning.... threw most of his curry.
So, in conclusion we were not able to finish the huge portion of curry, but I have to admit that their curry was pretty good!
I will go back there again if I ever have huge craving for curry. -
Review from Edward L.
I've heard here and there about the $7.50 meal deal combo here, so finally had a chance to check it out.
Parking is hit or miss here. There is a private lot, but the last few times I came here it was completely full. Today there were about 10 available spots.
The combo itself is Soup + Noodle + (2x) Topping + Drink. They hand you a sheet and you check off what you want. For example, there were about 7 types of soup base available, and maybe 9 types of noodles. I picked Tom Yum, and it was exactly what I expected. The bowl itself is fairly large too. Awesome!
Staff were very courteous, and even asked us if we wanted to upgrade from our table to a nearby booth after the previous guests left. Service felt a *little* bit rushed, but it actually felt like eagerness if anything, as opposed to a push to make us finish and get out.
For the drinks, you have to add $1 for a cold one (as opposed to hot). So my friend and I both had hot drinks. They came with NO sugar mixed in already, which is nice as you can control the sweetness. The cups are a little bit smaller than other HK-style cafes, but it's no biggie.
I will have to come back here a few more times, as there are a pile of choices. Recommended. -

I love this place and I hate the parking lot with a passion. Seriously, if it's during peak hours, don't even bother going up the ramp to the upper deck. You'll just see at least 2 cars jammed, trying to do a 10-point turn to go around. Bleah.
Anyways, on to the fooood! I ordered the fish-soup (no MSG!) with watercress and almonds, with fish and their handmade cuttlefish balls with my noodle choice being the rice noodles. I also added in the pan-fried pork in Maggi sauce (hey, I'm trying to put on weight!)
This was one of the better noodle-soups I've had in awhile. Lots of watercress, the broth had a crisp, clean aftertaste (did I mention no MSG?!? LOL). Their was a decent amount of fish and lots of cuttlefish balls, both of which were quite fresh. The overall portion was pretty big and after my side of pork, I was stuffed!!!
Thankfully, I got to wash it all down with some iced lemon tea and my meal was done.
Highly recommended! -

Very seldom will I give a chinese fast food/cafe type place a 4.5 stars. Yes I know it says 4 stars but I'm not that generous of a person to round up.
The noodles here are always fresh and tasty. After a long night of drinking, this is a great place to make yourself feel better with a soothing bowl of noodles.
They are famous for their MSG-less fish soup which is very flavorful. Usually I'll get the one with the cilantro and century egg because that is a classic comfort soup combo.
Today I chose intestines and their homemade cuttlefish ball for my toppings. The reason Deer Garden didn't get the full 5 stars today was because their pieces of intestines were HUGE and filled with guck (for a lack of a better word) in the middle. Just because I have the guts to eat intestine doesn't mean the concept doesn't wholly bother me and the big hunks made me think I was eating anuses or penis-heads. Seriously. AND it was so chewy! Plus, I'm not an expert on intestine but what kind of an super unhealthy pig has completely clogged intestines? I left the big pieces and ate the smaller pieces.
The homemade cuttlefish balls were fantastic! Can I buy some for home?
Anyways, despite my intestine fiasco, I'll definitely be back, probably sooner than later.
BTW, did I mention the great price point? $7.50 and you get a HUGE bowl of noodles and a drink! -
Review from Shen S.
this place has one of the best noodles w/ the most generous portion ever! we had to wait in line for 20+ minutes before we were finally seated.
i ordered the soup base w/ thousand year's egg, vermicilli, beef slices and pork intestines! and for appetizers (that's $1.50 each) we ordered the deep fried chicken wings and deep fried fish cake, which were both delicious! esp. the chicken wings were juicy and bigger than the usual chicken wings u get in any other restaurants!
for $7.50, you get a huge bowl of fish-based noodle soup that has no MSG, their noodle soups are well worth the price! on top of that u get fairly decent sized free coffee or tea (hot is free, cold is additional $1)
when we left at 10pm there were still lots of people lining up by the door...waiting outside and crowding the entrance!
will definitely come here again!! the wait may be long, but the noodles are so worth it! -

This place gets crazy busy. We went early yesterday and were the first people in line for the restaurant to open. Within 5 minutes of it opening nearly every table was full.
We quickly ordered milk tea and bowls of soup, the house specialty. We chatted and played with our cell phones, then realized a half had passed without any further service ...no drinks, no soup. I looked around to see nearly every table covered with bowls of soup and dishes of food.
I pulled someone aside to inquire why we (the first table to arrive) had not received anything, not even our milk tea. A few minutes later, one mug of tea arrives and then the woman takes the other cup of tea on her tray to another table. We tried to stop her since we thought we deserved both cups of tea we ordered. She said the other one would come out later. Uh, ok. A few more minutes and a 2nd mug of milk tea arrives. This is now about 40 minutes since we were seated. 40 minutes.
The table next to us had received their drinks quickly and even 1 appetizer, but soon they worried that their noodles would not arrive either. As we all started to complain further, a waitress finally came over and explained that the computer had went down at some point in the kitchen (and I assume early orders were not placed/lost). Ugh. So we waited some more.
The soup finally arrived at our table (table next to us waited another 5 minutes or so) ... and I have to admit that it's pretty dang good, so I can't rag on them for the food. Service seemed a bit scattered and not on top of things.
I would return again for the food, but would fear the long lines. When we left, there were probably 30 people lined up waiting for tables.
Cash only. -

I come to this place often and I LOVE the food.
Deer Garden Signatures is THE place to be when looking for Hong Kong-style Soup with noodles (or rice). They offer a "pick your noodles with soup" which has a WIDE selection of soup bases and noodles along with toppings. Being an Asian, I love the internal organs, but they do have alternatives which suits western tastes.
Just note that the Parking lot is ALWAYS full and there are constant waits to get into the restaurant. The best way is to get someone else to go and grab a reservation while the driver finds a parking space (* note: just approach the counter to place your name, there are NO LINE to get reservations). Personally, I prefer going in later hours for late lunch or late dinner as the waits are shorter.
Service-wise I would say that there are NO service as the servers just take your orders and serve your food. Also, they are VERY busy as the restaurant is always packed. Do not expect some great service, but I would say it is standard Asian-style service.
Overall, great food and fast food. Definitely would recommend for all!!! -

Looking for a good Chinese noodle house? This is it! Famous for it's fish broth, there are 4 selections you can choose from with the fish broth base.. but you can mix it up with different variations including:
- watercress and almonds
- pumpkin and tomato..
or stick with the basic with no additions. With that said, the additions to the broth means you get more veggies and filling.
Next you choose the types of noodles you like - thick thin, clear, egg, instant... OMG this is getting to be a complicated process.
Not done yet - now you choose your protein and veggies - beef, pork, tongue, brisket, mushrooms, tofu ,assortment of veggies.. the list seems to be endless. You get 3 (more decisions!).
My food pervert (Claudia L.) and I struggled to put our chinese vocabulary together laughing in between words, while trying to tell the waitress what we would like. We thought we could show off our cantonese.. it was quite funny!
Not long after, our meals came out.. in LARGE LARGE bowls. The broth was piping hot and noodles, soup and toppings were filled to the max. I think it took us about two hours to finish the bowl.. and yes we finished the ENTIRE bowl. I think it could've been split between the two of us but we love our good asian food! The flavours were invigorating, strong, and yummy in my tummy. I had the homemade cuttlefish balls which were surprisingly very flavourful with each bite I took. The veggies were overwhelming, but so satisfying at the same time.
There was still a last decision to be made - which is YOUR DRINK! This wasn't a hard decision for either of us as we both wanted red bean ice (specialty drinks is an extra $1).......... but they have a pretty extensive bubble tea menu that you pick from.
The service is not great... as the ladies are always rushing to get orders and bringing out large trays of heavy noodles so do not expect much. Enjoy the company you are with, order quickly and sit back relax and you will be satisfied. -

Almost a carbon copy of Cattle Cafe's menu, I knew I had to try this place sooner or later.
Finally came on a Friday afternoon, and there was already a line up. Waited for about 15 minutes, then the six of us got seated inside a booth. This place is quite large, with another small room near the back.
Their menu is very similar to Cattle Cafe's, specializing in 'choose your own noodle combo.' Here, they have more choices in soups, as well as the ingredients. I got the laksa soup, with vermicelli (rice noodle), with fish, and Vietnamese ham. Also got a red bean smoothie, and added a side order of wings for $1.50.
The wings came first, three decent sized wings, and pretty tasty. A perfect crunchiness, and flavourful. Then came the noodles. There are mushrooms, cabbage, bean curds, in addition to the items I chose.
The soup is not too spicy, just perfect. Fish pieces were a little small, but I enjoyed the ham. A good portion of the noodles. The red bean drink was served in a small plastic take out cup.
Notbad, given the number of choices available. Would like to see drink size increased, otherwise, another good noodle place to visit! -

Choices are always good, especially when you can mix and match your own bowl of noodle soup. You can combo your meal with a drink and also opt to add side dishes for minimal amounts, depending on how hungry you are. I was slightly disappointed that my HK milk tea was on the bitter side...but I supposed their msg-less soup base made up for it...this time. Portions are generous, so be prepared, or just share! I missed out on the handmade cuttlefish balls this time around, so perhaps that's why I wasn't able to bump this experience up to a 4 star. Oh well, gives me another reason to come back. It's hard being a foodie.

Review from Eddo T.

Upon arrival, I noticed that this place probably needs another parking lot, because I had to end up sharing a parking space with my friend who drove a scooter that night. If it wasn't for him, I probably would have had to spend about 30 minutes waiting for a spot (along with like 3 other cars that were parked there, clogging up the lanes).
So you get the gist of it. The parking is just horrendously bad. Terri-bad.
Anyways, let's get started...
Food: So far, I've had the curry, the signature noodle soup, some spaghetti, and chicken wings. Interestingly, they claim to not use any MSG in their soup. I am not sensitive enough to MSG, so I'd need some professional detector to verify this for me. Taste-wise, I think this place is pretty decent.
The curry definitely has a "zing" to it. It does contain a considerable amount of coconut milk, so some people may not like it as much. But... personally, I felt that it was awesome.
Ambiance: I think this is a cozy little restaurant, and the booth we had was fairly comfortable. The interior was nice and clean, and the colors were quite vibrant and lively. I like it.
Value: Compared to other HK-style cafes, this is definitely a bit more expensive. This place also serves bubble tea, and it's not terrible. $15 dollars should be plenty enough to settle the bill.
Service: Terrible. Been there 3 times, and the waitresses are all very well-trained at avoiding eye contact, even if they are in front of your face. They storm around the place, left and right, but most of the times they really aren't doing anything in particular. They are very good at making themselves look busy. I guess that takes some skills.
On the most recent visit, I actually had to get up and grab a waitress (only to interrupt her conversation with another) to let her know that we were ready to order. Also, they screwed up some orders as well. Once again, had to get up to grab the bill. Not impressed.
Final Verdict: Worth going? That depends if you can tolerate a few things...
1. Waitresses that avoid you and possibly screw up orders?
2. The terribly bad parking lot that needs to be upgraded to 3x the size?
Now... if only the service was better... then it would receive my unconditional love....
Otherwise, the food here is pretty decent. -
