Review from Kova P.
Coquitlam, BC
The Coquitlam Deer Garden has been open for many years and I used to come here with my parents when I was little. I came here the other day for lunch and ordered a curry beef brisket dish which was amazing. The curry was so rich and flavourful, I probably could`ve ordered a few more extra bowls of rice to finish it. For lunch, they also have a make-your-own-noodle special where you can choose which type of soup base you want, what type of noodles, and what toppings as well. We ordered a Tom Yum Soup with udon noodles, cuttlefish balls and dumplings. The noodle dish was alright, a bit on the oily side.
I also came here last year during the Alaskan King Crab season where they serve crabs made in 3 different ways- as a fried rice, steamed with garlic and also deep fried with a spicy coating. The crab was amazing and I would definitely recommend it. -

Deer Garden in Coquitlam has been opened many, many years... I basically grew up with this restaurant and never really thought that I'd be blogging about it. But why hide a gem when I never grow tired of it. Sure it has its flaws, but what Chinese restaurant doesn't? Especially when there is more demand than supply - too many hungry customers and not a lot of staff... Fortunately for them there are not a lot of quality Chinese restos in Coquitlam - out of the handful that's decent, I can only think of maybe 3 we would frequent in the Tri-Cities.
This resto is full of Chinese comfort food and specialty items - congee and noodles for the day; mini rice sets, french toast and milk tea for afternoon tea; and dinner combo sets that includes house soup (typically pork-bone broth with lotus roots or pumpkin squash and chicken feet), rice, and dessert soup (red bean soup or coconut sago)... Lunch sets under $10 served with hot / cold drinks; Dinner combo meals available for 2, 3, 4, 6... prices are reasonable and the portions are hefty. Dinner combo for 4 will feed 5 hungry mouths for $60 including tips!
Cuisine: Chinese, Noodles, Hong Kong Cafe, Comfort Food

Infamous delicacies of Deer Garden includes their Seafood, Hainanese Free Range Chicken (HFRC), Salt Baked Chicken, and Malaysian Style Curry.
The HFRC is juicy, tender, and flavourful... Traditional Hainanese prefers the use of plumper birds to maximize the amount of oil extracted - the entire chicken is boiled in chicken and pork bone stock then dipped in ice after cooking to produce gelatine like gloss finish. Served with dipping sauces of chilli and minced ginger and oil. TIP: order extra minced ginger and oil sauce to mix with rice... delish!
Originally Mui Garden was known for their curries - I seriously beg to differ. Last time I was there, the curry was watery and cold. Let's not get into details here. The curry at Deer Garden is a velvety concoction of coconut milk and yellow curry meddled with onions, potatoes, and green/red peppers. The meat is nicely robed and abundant. Chose from Beef, Beef Briskets, Chicken, Fish, or Pork Culets...
Other notable dishes;
Jelly Fish
Not always available and sometimes seasonal. Their jelly fishes are plump and juicy. The chili sesame oil sauce compliments this dish so well.
Salt and Pepper Fish Filets
One of the best S&P preparations in town! Loads of garlic chips, jalapenos, peppers, and green onions. Be sure to try this on crab as well.
"Paper Wrap" Sirloin Strips immersed with Hua Diao Jiu Wine
Tin foil wrapped sirloin beef seals in moisture to make this cow tender and succulently robed with Hua Diao Wine sauce. Enoki mushrooms and onions brings out the flavonoids. The tin foil wrapping maybe a bit of a gimmick for presentation, but its delish!
Black Bean Sauce Steamed Fish on Tofu
Black Bean medley with soy makes this rather simple dish stand out.
Tong Choi
Malaysian Style stir fried with chilli and garlic sauce. Other favourite preparations include stir fried with fermented tofu / chilli or shrimp paste.
Lastly, if you come for service, please don't have high expectations. This place is packed at all times. The staff are overworked and sometimes as a regular you are forced to serve yourself. Nonetheless, if you are willing to wait, it will come eventually. Otherwise, another great option is to order take out!
And remember, if the parking lot is full... try parking across the street where Safeway is. So far, no one has been towed yet. -

One of the best authentic chinese food in the area.
Try the Hainanese Chicken Rice and Beef Brisket Curry! -

Ok the food is good here but the service is seriously lacking. Everytime we've gone, the service levels have decreased.
They need to pay more attention to filling tea and addressing the needs of the patrons instead of chit chatting away.
I was seriously contemplating no tip but the cooks did a stellar job.Listed in: My Poco Favs

2.5 Stars.
The food is good to OK. Over sauced dishes really take away from the taste of some of their dishes. i.e. Steamed Cod with Black Bean. Waaaayyyyy tooooo much sauce. It was inedible until we scraped off what we could.
They have possibly the best curry beef brisket dish that I have ever eaten, but even that is not enough to make up for the poor service and attitude of the staff/owners.
The staff is uncaring, they could care less if you are seated right away or god forbid you need a second more to order your food. I have had numerous dirty dishes, cups, etc and again, unapologetic.
The restaurant smells like spiced body odor. I will not sugar coat it. It wreaks and takes away from the dining experience. -

I love this place!
My goto place with my sister if Im craving for Chinese food and a good price in Coquitlam. They have the dinner set where for $24,99? you get soup, two main dishes, two bowls of rice and two desserts. The soup is usually the same. I love their chicken currey, it is fantastic! juicy chicken pieces with chunky potatoes and red/yellow peppers. My sister loves their stringbean with beef. We always have leftovers for lunch the day after, so it is perfect.
It is very busy especially weekend lunchtime and you might have to wait.. But make sure you flag the servers otherwise you may sit there all day frustrated because no one is helping you... But if you keep bothering them they do come.. hahaha. -

Deer Garden's been opened in Coquitlam at the same location for the longest time! I've ate there since I was a little kid and the boss still remembered me. We went there for my friend's baby one month banquet celebration and although the seating was a little chaotic since they're always so packed, the food was delicious.
With only 3 servers running the show and a full house, they were on top of everything and nothing was delayed. 13 dishes came continuously and we were all quite full halfway through.
This place is a little hidden gem in Coquitlam, so go try! -

So I've said that Mui Garden has the best beef brisket curry, but I have to say that, maybe, this Deer Garden's is just as good. It's pretty much the only thing I order here and my parents often get it to go since the service can be a bit slow here, partly because it's just so busy (which is probably because they make some great food). I also want to take off another 1/2 star simply because they seem to be closed sometimes unexpectedly which is annoying.

One of the better Chinese food restaurants in the Coquitlam area. Everytime I go there, I must have the curry chicken. That dish is to die for. Price isn't too bad, quantities are also reasonable. Also try the hai-nan chicken, one of the best in the area.
