Just recently discovered that they roast their own coffee beans. Pretty good selection too. Beans from Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Kenya. Prices are quite good as well, most varieties start at $10.45 per pound. Only decaf was a bit too pricey, going for over $22 per pound.
The store was surprisingly large on the inside. I walked in expecting a tiny grocery store and found myself in a supermarket. So many things, I really didn't have time to explore it all. I'll be checking it out again. -

There's a restaurant upstairs where chefs in training cook for you! Great lunch spot inexpensive price! The store itself is great, nice deli and lots of good food...

I love these small family owned grocery stores - they're not fancy looking but they usually have a ton of charm and almost always carry items that you can't find elsewhere.
They have a great cheese selection here! I was on a serious hunt for taleggio cheese after tasting it on a great pizza at Dacquisto. Well, I went to La Grotta (who also has a large cheese counter) but for some reason, staff told me that they haven't carried it for over a year. Something about not being able to source it. So I was a bit worried that I would not be able to find taleggio in the city. Luckily, I went to De Lucas and they had it! It's a pricey cheese but it was worth all that searching.
They also carry lots of Italian deli meats. And I love their bakery section here - fergasa bread, cannolis, ciabattas...etc. Yum.
This place also had a small dining area upstairs. Actually, the whole store ends up smelling like an Italian kitchen around lunch time. It's all communal tables and feels a bit like a cafeteria since you pay before you eat. You can get pizza and salad or all you can eat pasta which are all made in house. You can have a good lunch for well under $10.
They also have a large selection of home replacement meals like pre-made lasagnas, quiches and other oven friendly meals. I have tasted a few items but found that they were a tad too salty for my tastes.
Parking can be tricky here even though they have 2 small private lots in the back. Otherwise, you have to park on Portage or on the side streets. -

I love De Luca's, it's definitely the best grocery store in the West-End. I seriously never go anywhere else for cheese; the quality and selection is excellent, you can buy any quantity and the prices are decent on most types.
Even though it's a specialty store they still have a wide-range of basic ingredients which almost makes it a one-stop shop for most of your grocery needs.
I also like the fact that the staff is always super friendly and will never hesitate to show you where something is or give information on their products.
Some items in the store are a little pricey so be a bit selective, but all in all it's a must stop before venturing into making an Italian dinner.
