Review from Garth C.
Now I must start this with a disclaimer, I've been here several times before and I've only ever order 2 items from their menu. Eggs Amsterdam and Strawberry Chocolate and Banana Pannekoek.
Eggs Amsterdam is pretty much an Eggs benny but with a Dutch rusk instead of a muffin. The rusk's texture along with the egg and hollandaise sauce is an excellent prescription to a lingering hangover.
I recommend going with a friend who has the same taste in food? Why because I also love the pannekoek. I normally eat half of the Amsterdam and half of the pannekoek - it's like a little dessert for my brunch!
I would give it another star but it's a tad pricey for the quality of food. -

This is my favorite breakfast place in Coquitlam, but why is the rating so low?
I have to admit that for food I would give 5 stars but they lose 1 for service in general, and another for price. Now that I've gotten more foodie experience, I can't justify paying so much for minimally acceptable coffee or the whatever juices. I think the cost of the food is whatever, but nearly 5 bucks for a cup of orange juice? I'll pass.
Another issue I have with this place is that the service is not that great. They are pretty slow most of the time, and I don't like the attitude of the waiters; don't pretend like you're doing me a favor when I'm a paying customer. Go do your job, put the order in, bring the food out and plaster a smile on. This seems to be a challenge for those who work here.
Their specialty, the pannekoek is really good, as big as a car wheel and really eggy. My favorite, the one I always get is the strawberry whipped cream one that comes sprinkled with confectioner's sugar. This is NOT supposed to be your average pancake so don't come expecting one, they state it very clearly in the front, so if you want pancakes then go to the iHop across the street. It's like you go to a fish and chips specialty place but order a hotdog. Don't be that douche. Overall, I'd give it a shot because you can't quite find anything like it. -

They list the circumference of the pancake on the menu.
Brilliant!
I am now going to request the circumference of any griddled product before ordering. If they don't know the exact measurement (sometimes math is hard and pi isn't even real) they can just hold out their hands and show me. If it's not big enough to be used as a blanket then I won't be ordering it.
The pancakes at this utterly run of the mill chain were blow-me-away fantastic! Super eggy, a little bit burnt, served with berries, and big enough to be used as a blanket coming in at 32" (why this wasn't in the metric system, I dunno.)
The Eggs Benedict on the other hand were a whole 'nother story problem. The ways in which they were gross cannot be listed because I don't know how to type out an exponential number and I'm too lazy to figure it out. Their circumference was N to the Grossest degree.
Thank goodness I was able to wrap myself in the warmth of one of the most delicious pancakes I've ever had. I have a thing for eggy pancakes so YMMV. -

Rewind back in time: After nights filled with binge drinking, a kid in Coquitlam has few choices for a decent breakfast--De Dutch happened to be one of them. Whether you were part of a hockey, soccer or church going family, multiple generations cram in next to hungover youths, still wearing the last night's best. Pannekoek (pancakes), omlettes and bennys were served from morning to mid afternoon. They were offering something a little different, and dare I say, classier than the greasy diner.
Fast forward to today: De Dutch looks exactly the same. Ketchup, HP, Jiff peanut butter accompany factory produced hashbrowns and processed bread. There's no fooling anyone that anything here is homemade, no matter how many apple "sculptures" sit atop the plate. The eggs benny said "basted" eggs on the menu - we dined on sunny side up. Hollandaise sauce from a package, a hard as a rock and tasteless rusk, and a standard piece of ham... wasn't there supposed to be some edam cheese on this? Thank goodness the triple berry and whip cream pannekoek tasted as good as it did. It saved the meal, even with it's leaning tower of aresol whip.
Definitely not the best, but when you're hungry, it'll still win over IHOP across the street. -

It looks like a typical diner (sorry , it look like a Denny's.. Ok ok I'll upgrade you a bit. Baker's Square.. how's that) The wait was 25 minutes at 9:45AM Sunday Morning. Good sign that you must be doing something right. It was clean and kids friendly, handicap friendly, people of all ages friendly. I liked it.
Now the food. Good solid breakfast. I got the Eggs Amsterdam Benedict - with Sliced Ham and Edam Cheese served on slices of toasted Dutch Rusks. The Hollandaise Sauce wasnt spectacular but the benedict was delish eaten as a whole. I also appreciate the fact that they decorate their fruit presentation on the plate. fancy
And the Pannekoek. There was a plain one and a banana walnut one. MMmm I love it. I like the giant size. It's just too cool. I like the how it's thicker than a crepe but thinner than a pancake. Just right.. Won't get you too full unless you eat the whole thing by yourself.. Sharing is caring. Trying to teach that to a 2.5 year old.
I'd come back for more if I'm ever in the area again. Bring your granny, nanny, and your kids. Everyone will find something they enjoy. -

If you want to try the pancakes, you can't unless you order a full order. Else, a half order costs 60% of the full order but you only get half. Also, the half order does NOT come with real maple syrup.
We're in CANADA.. there's NO EXCUSE to serve *fake* maple syrup here! Also, what's up with this pay for 60% but get 50% BS.
So I got the full pancake, it wasn't fluffy enough and tasted unnecessarily eggy. And, my sunny side up eggs were overcooked.
The peanutbutter and jelly on the side was a plus though.
Suggestion: Offer a small side pancake with real maple syrup! -
