I pass this place every single day, or more specifically, I've seen the sign every single day. I never actually knew a restaurant existed until I looked it up on Yelp. One day I braved it and ventured down the dark stairs to realize they had a bustling business going on.
My first De Dutch experience was at the Poco one, but now I'm a regular at the Hastings one because the food is just as good, and this place is much cozier AND closer. The service I might dare say is even better, and has a homey, small business feel. Perhaps this is why if you don't come early, you will have to wait as your hungrily drool over other people's Pannekoeks.
There is a small parking lot in the back but there's also free parking out front. Food is to die for, although thankfully the prices are steep enough to limit my excessive caloric intake to something like once/month. Sometimes it's worth it even twice/month depending on your budgetary constraints. You just have to do De Dutch! -

The pancake was good, basically a big rolled out crepe, everything else that went along with it was not good. The pancake saved the restaurant from my first one star rating. Besides the pancake, the most flavorful thing I had was the ketchup...
The restaurant itself looks bad as well. -

The pancake was pretty different. I've never had real dutch pancakes before. I had a Dutch roommate once who made them by just watering down some Aunt Jemima mix. But these were much different from Aunty J. These pancakes had a saltier taste and in some way, even tasted a bit like a plain dosa.
I ordered the Canadian Pannekoek which was a Dutch pancake that came with 2 free range eggs, 2 slices of tomatoes and "deBakon" (pork cottage roll) but I sub-ed the debakon for sausage slices. And it was served with real Canadian Maple syrup. At first I thought the eggs looked a little strange for restaurant eggs but then I realized they looked just like scrambled eggs you'd make at home with your real eggs. And they were tasty.
The hot chocolate was overly doused with whipped cream, and the hot chocolate it self was watery Carnation mix, it seemed. So next time I'd skip that. And it's true that the restaurant was out dated. It's in a bit of a basement-like suite with little seating room for a diner. But Actually I think all of that added to the quirky ambience to the diner. I've never seen a place like it before. It would be nicer with an update, but I don't mind it like this. However, It would be difficult to come here with a party bigger than 6.
The bathrooms are also pretty out dated and could use a major facelift. But they do have the rotating seat covers on the toilet.
Lastly, the service was a little slow.. We had to flag them down a couple times for coffee refills. But they were pretty busy.Listed in: The Morning After...brunchity…, Dining in Burnaby

First off, getting here was a challenge. The restaurant does not face Hastings, rather you've got to go behind the building. On the bright side, this means they've got a parking lot! So when you get to the right block, hang a left, another left, and park in front on the restaurant.
Moving on, the food was delicious. Not a complaint was uttered around the table. I liked how the entire meals were served atop the pannekoek, leaving this sweet and delicious piece of heaven at the bottom waiting for you, now saturated with the flavors of breakfast. Or your entire breakfast tasted like dessert if you got one of their fruit concoctions.
For a breakfast joint I thought $70 was a little steep for 4 people but, truthfully, that won't stop me from coming back. -

The service was good, my omelet was burnt but upon showing the server she quickly rectified the situation with a complete fresh plate of food which was very good and what I expect from a $13 dollar omelet!! I will return but not in the near future!!

Full disclosure: I worked at another De Dutch Pannekoek House location for two years while I was in university. But I ate the food (and drank the coffee) every week when I worked there, and I still love it [mrmmmff] years later. So that's both my conflict of interest statement and my endorsement!
Best things on the menu: the BC Bene's with smoked salmon and cheese served on crispbread, the Canadian Pannekoek with back bacon and real maple syrup, the Perogy Pannekoek with all the potatoes and cheese baked into it, and the hash browns. Love those crispy little hashbrowns on the side.
Like most locations, this one is small and out of the way - you'll have to go down the alley just north of Hastings to reach the door. And there will likely be a lineup on weekday mornings. I know. I used to deal with it. By the way, when they tell you how long the wait will be, they're mostly lying. But it's worth the wait. -

The food is De Licious! (4.5 stars)
The restaurant is De sperately needing a restaurant makeover! (2 stars)
Another brunch with my girls and we all ordered something different. I ordered the vegetarian pancake with a side of one egg and a side of the hot cinnamony apples. Everything was divine! The pancake perfectly done, my earl grey tea pot refilled without having to wait until my mug hit the bottom, and my over-medium side of egg was done to perfection. On top of that the service was spot on.
I wish I could say as much for the restaurant itself. Ok, Ok, aside from the two huge pot holes getting into the parking out back, the restaurant had this peculiar smell when I first entered. I cannot put my finger on the smell, but I do know that it was unappetizing. There were two flies flying around our table - One big one and one smaller one. Luckily I discovered them after I ate my meal, but I spent a good 15 minutes swatting them out of the way as my girlfrends and I finished off our tea and gossip.
I feel like if they deep cleaned the entire restaurant (or tore everything out and started from scratch) the atmosphere would be a lot more comfortable to eat in. Though washroom was clean, overall the food is too good for the atmosphere as is. -

I LOVE THIS PLACE. It's wayyyyyyy better than the iHop across the street, and the Pannekoeks are amazing!!!! Coffee's yummy and so is the juice. If you've never tried a Pannekoek go now!!! It's like a pancake, but bigger (I would say as big as a car wheel), eggier, fluffy and just yummy! My favorite is the sweet Pannekoek with strawberries, whipped cream and powdered sugar.

I've never had Dutch pancakes before - but it appeared to be a cross between american pancakes and crepes. Bigger diameter than american pancakes and thicker than crepes. Unfortunately they only serve one. Nothing spectacular; not bad either. A good place for breakfast. A bit on the pricey side ($40+) considering we only ordered two pancakes between three of us along with some toast and home fries.

this place is UNREAL. i'm not a pancake fan, but these pannekoeken pancakes are something else. actually have had this stuff somewhere else, but the de dutch chains make them so much better. huge (bigger than 1 foot diamater probably) pancake that's thin like crepe but with soft airy pancake texture. my favorite is the farmer's.
