Review from Joanne S.
This is an average place.
My room was a little small, but it wasn't bad. The room was clean and they had a big flat screen which was a nice change in a hotel. The bed was pretty comfortable, AC was on when I came in so it was nice and cool. The bathroom was also a little small and had a strange smell. I stayed for three nights so I had to air out the bathroom daily, aside form that it wasn't bad. Oh and there was free wifi, which came in handy because my phone wasn't working, but I was able to use the wifi.
The clerks in the front desk was very nice and very helpful with directions and questions. My room was close to the front to it gets a little noisy in the morning from kids running in and out of the main office. -

Not terrible, not great. It worked really well for us on our weekend trip to Vancouver, but it has no luxuries. The room was the smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in, enough space for two beds, and dresser and desk. Cozy (aka small) bathroom with a square shower.
Everything was clean except for some trash left under the bed and everything was in working order. Good water pressure, flat screen tv, free breakfast, free wifi...
The breakfast was pretty standard- bagels, toast, cereal, oatmeal, juice, muffins. I thought it was pretty good if you were creative.
Parking is a little sketchy. They have parking on both sides, but the far side is a very tight entrance, so if you don't have a small car, you may have to opt for the other side.
Friendly staff. Strange room setup. The lobby is indoors, but they have an open air garden in the middle of all the rooms, so your room door opens into the "outside." A little chilly for winter trips. However, it was a pretty attractive garden.
No problems overall. No noise issues. I would have liked to have a work out room.
We would consider staying here again. -

Booked online for discount I think through VIA Rail Canada.
Neat colonial-ish front exterior. Nice staff and when I asked if I could extend the standard checkout time from 11a to later in the afternoon, they said they could do 12, which was still nice, since they are booked that day. Downstairs breakfast stuffs are decent and seating is a little cramped. Flat screen and papers. If you don't have internet on your phone, they do have a computer I think you can charge time to. That or you can just setup a free Vancouver Library card at the branch down Kingsway and use the branches' access (Richmond libraries charge, more on that in separate review). I used the Kingsway to setup and frequented the downtown location. Moving along, the rooms are great for the value. Nice beds, flatscreen with selection, standard info books in drawers... the shower warms up pretty quick. The bathroom is pretty cramped, so careful. VBC free maps at the counter and decent food selection in the area. Would recommend for decent lodging at good value (atleast online). It's near Nanaimo SkyTrain Station at borderline walking distance. I just walked it, but I noticed buses run on Nanaimo and Kingsway streets. -

All in all I have no complaints about this hotel own by Days Inn. I've seen a lot worst with them, LoL. Everything in my room was clean except I found somebody's long hair on the bed which wouldn't go good if I had a wife and she came in unexpectedly.. safe to say I didn't have either one happen to me. Loved the front desk clerk which helped me more then a few times with common local questions about their region. The only problem I had was with the noise level around 8 am. A one night stay turned into 3.. who would have thought.. : ) .. Oh yeah one other thing please boost your WiFi signal up a notch because I was super close to the front desk area and I only got two bars.. can't imagine being place further away and getting half a bar.. ; )

I would recommend Cassandra Hotel over Days Inn. While Cassandra charges $15 for 3 days of wireless internet and their continental breakfast isn't as nice (you just get pastries and juice in a bag with self-serve coffee since their dining area is being renovated), the rooms and service is so much better. Also, price comes out pretty much the same. In addition, local calls are free at Cassandra and is within walking distance of skytrain.
Pros
- free wireless internet
- continental breakfast pretty good (strudel, toast, bagel, muffins, tea, juice, milk, cereal, coffee)
- free parking
Cons
- charge local phone calls
- walls are paper thin (we heard the bouncing bed springs in the room next to us two nights straight, one night at 11pm, and then at 5am- my mom thinks it was a prostitute doing business). We literally could not sleep until the deed was done.
- water pressure not so good.
- no elevator
- customer service so so. Check in and check out was fine, but when we had issues with the internet and asked them to reset the router, the staff member at first wanted to give us the 1-800 # to figure it out... and we were like, just reset the router, calling won't do anything. In the end, they did, but just didn't like the push back. -

This place is completely random. Power outages, but clean. Continental breakfast, but not superb quality (although ok). Free parking, but our room door didn't work. Good service and change for small quantities of US Dollars, but incredibly expensive calls to US. I recommend it for the price, but expect randomness.

Review from Brian B.
The best thing that I can say is that it was a very cheap rate for a relatively clean room. The room that I had was fairly large, but had a tiny bathroom. Why they refurbished it with a lot of wasted space in the main room while scrimping on the bathroom, I'll never understand. That said, I paid about $50 a night, and that suited me just fine.
The location is very interesting, despite the occasional professional lady making her obvious rounds. I mean, this IS a liberal area of a liberal city, and I saw the same thing in other areas. The main road on which it is located has some FANTASTIC restaurants along its length, from fantastic Pho to incredible Indian. The proliferation of restaurants catering to many different types of Asian foods has to be seen to be believed. There is even a groovy Bollywood style theater with a balcony that shows Indian movies WITH English subtitles!
That said, I found the service to be somewhat lackadaisical. As I was meeting my girlfriend there, and she was going to arrive first, I asked the main reservations office for Days Inn to make a note requesting that she be allowed to check in upon her arrival (the reservation was pre-paid in order to get the good rate). I also called the hotel directly and spoke with the desk person to ensure that there was no problem with her earlier check-in. Upon her arrival, of course, NO RECORD of my request. I had to pull over on I-5 and call the hotel directly. They finally acquiesced, but gave us one of the least desirable rooms at the front (noisy side) of the hotel.
Also, one BIG ISSUE that I have is that, after the first day, they charged my card with a $50 deposit for damages and incidentals WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE OR AUTHORIZATION. Now, I really don't see the point, considering the fact that no other hotel in which I have stayed has ever charged me a deposit in case of "damage and incidentals" (there was no mini-bar, so I am not sure what incidentals they meant). However, to charge my card, even a measly $50, without my authorization is simply not acceptable business practice. When I complained at the desk, the lady kept explaining that it was simply a deposit that would be refunded. I let her know that I understood the concept of a deposit, but the point was that no one had informed me of the charge. She simply kept repeating her explanation of a deposit, without addressing my actual concern. The deposit was NOT included in my pre-payment to http://Hotels.com. It has now been four business days since my check-out, and the payment has yet to be refunded. This (illegal) practice has really tarnished what would have been a thumbs up referral for my fellow cheap travelers.
