    * True community festival with a political sense of humour *

The annual Davie Day festival isn't a huge bash, but more of a neighbourhood event.  It truly has the feel of a local community block party which has grown up a little and now has a few sponsors.

They had 3 music spots set up, one with a full stage.  Highlights included a Zimbabwean rumba group which really got the crowd going, a nice 4 piece jazz group that mellowed everyone out, and a high powered drag queen who got people dancing.

There were a few food stalls (but I didn't sample any of the BBQ corn, veggie samosas, or "Hawaiian" soft serve).

Perhaps the most amusing was the festival organizers' clear sense of political humour.  This became clear in two placements:

    1)  They placed the Vision Vancouver tent right next to the West End association of people trying to stop the development the mayor is pushing for the neighbourhood.  You may remember the controversy when the mayor left his mike on (http://www.theglobeand...).  So it was pretty amusing they would stick his party's tent right next to the people he had insulted and dismissed.

    2)  They stuck the animal rights tent with a sign about saving the cows right across from Vera's Burgers.

I couldn't help but chuckle at both locations!
