I'm no artist, but if I had lots of money, I'd buy lots of art books. Big expensive ones wrapped in plastic, with heavy covers that could knock a man unconscious with one hefty blow.

I wouldn't buy the books for weapons, what I'm saying is, I'd buy them because they're lovely.

David Mirvish Books is the best place to go if you can't afford those books but you want to look and dream that you could. They have every type; Canadian, European, Asian, books on calligraphy, beautiful atlases. Plus, they do sell some small books that are more affordable. The complete works of Picasso in a slightly-larger-than-pocket-size book for cheap.

I also really love the space, which features over-sized bright portraits on its high walls and has that calm quiet of an art gallery on a Tuesday afternoon.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree geographically, but when browsing David Mirvish's Bookstore, it's hard to picture a more different retail experience than Honest Ed's (founded by DM's father, Ed Mirvish) across the street. Mirvish Books is an a sedate, converted walk-up, and has the atmosphere of a modernist library--a far cry from the first-generation Mirvish barker approach.

It's a good place to pick up a coffee table book for a design buff, since they specialize in art and architecture books. Some of the stuff is a bit pricey, but there are also a number of specials on books that result in serious markdowns, so it's worthwhile checking out the store (and the website, which has a different selection).
