This is the perfect spot for a dine-in good ol' fashioned fish and chips experience. You take a look at the fish and chips itself, and it looks exactly the way you remember it, and tastes just the way (or a little bit better than) you remember it! The portions are just the right size and the fish is definitely fresh (hey it's Steveston!).

In addition to the usual fish and chips fare, they have other deep-fried battered seafood like oysters and prawns. I go the prawns usually while my partner gets the halibut. Prawns are fresh tasting with a good helping.

There's also a good combo option if you there's more than a couple of you. And if you go during non-peak season (when it's cold outside), there's an All-you-can-eat deal but best to call ahead to check if and when they offer it.

It does get crowded there on any given sunny weekend day but there's a take-out counter at the side with a couple outdoor picnic tables which is perfect on a sunny day!

I've heard people raving about how good Dave's fish and chips are but I never had a chance to go. I finally did, by chance, when I took a stroll with my partner on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

I went in, asked for the menu, read the menu, and contemplated. Eat in or eat out? Hmmm...eat out.

I was then directed towards the back of the restaurant to order "take outs". I ordered 1 piece of Halibut. Based on the reviews, many Yelpers weren't too fond of how dry the fish was done. Therefore, after I paid I gently said to the staff "Could you please make sure the fish is not dry? Thank you". I paced away timidly. I wasn't sure if he was unhappy looking to start with but when I picked up my order (a ball of brown paper and a small condiment container), he didn't look too approachable. I took the fish and fled.

I didn't go very far. My partner and I ended up eating the fish right in front on the restaurant on their wooden bench.

I unwrapped the brown paper gingerly and saw the golden fillet. The fish was meh. There was nothing special about it. I didn't find the fish dry but my partner did. The batter was not bad but it was thinly coasted. I would have liked it more if the batter was thicker. I think the fish could have been cut better. The middle of the fish was very thick so the middle was soft and the edges were not dry, but less succulent. The tar tar sauce was good. It wasn't heavy and went well with the fish.

Would I come back for more fish and chips here? Absolutely not.

I heard from a few people that this was the best fish and chips they've ever had so I gave it a try. Although it was good it wasn't "great". Service was swift and friendly. Love the location, right next to the fisherman's wharf.

The FOOD (Halibut, not fried) was very good, but there was imo an unhealthy level of cooking (frying?) oil in the air.

We came out with cooking oil in our clothes, sneezing, and obviously in our lungs.

Isn't cooking oil a VOC?  If it is, then, eating at Dave's is just not healthy, imo.

They could have invested in a better fryer oil trap, like other eating places. For example, Diavolo in Yaletown has a grease trap system that cost $200K, but the air there is wonderful.  Dave (if there is a Dave at Dave's) doesn't need to spend $200K because a D-I-Y system could probably be made for under $2K.

Until such time that Dave fixes this, I consider Dave's a NO-GO for me, a health-minded invidual.

Did anyone say AYCE Fish & Chips?

Yes, Dave's offering AYCE Fish & Chips for $10.95 (Cod) and $12.95 (Salmon).  No children's price.  And they only have AYCE from Monday to Thursday (or Friday?) from 11a - 7p.

I had 4 pieces of Cod and they were a little dry and overcooked.  The Salmon was a little bit dry and overcooked as well.  Not too fond of the thick batter either especially when the batter is darker than what it's supposed to be.

I used to come here for good fish & chips but it seems like the quality isn't as good as before.  For a few more loons, I could've gone down by the water and had a few good pieces.

No thumbs up from little Ashley on this....  And my 4 year old loves her fish and chips.

I tried Dave's because I heard it was the best fish n chips in Steveston. I did the take out in the back of the restaurant. Couple of things that I did not like.....1. the menu is a small piece of paper on the counter, maybe think about a large menu board above the cash register. 2. the batter on the fish was very doughy, thin it out a little and it would be nice and crispy. 3. the fries were soggy, a couple seconds longer in the fryer would help. 4. the fried clams, rubber, tough, bland, needs more seasoning maybe try fresh clams not frozen prebreaded. Homemade tartar would also help, Kraft isnt that good.
Couple of things I liked........1. the paper wrap for the fish, loved it. 2. the picnic tables 3. the the friendly service

Halibut dry but batter crispy 3 stars  according to Mum and Dad
Clam chowder good 3 stars according Mum
Mushy peas. 4 according to moi
Pan fried halibut dry but tasty 3  according to my brother
Shrimp sandwich 3 stars but it was a bit runny.  I did like it tho.

Somehow they were able to accomadate a large group of us on a sunny Sunday in the summer at 12 pm.  It took a bit of time but they coordinated it and kudo's to the staff for helping make it happen.

For some reason, things were dry.  I wonder if it was the oil too hot or too cold or something.

I live in Seattle... but, when we want GOOD fish & chips, we climb in the car and go for a drive, across the border.  We LOVE Dave's halibut fish.  It's always really good.  And yesterday's lunch was no exception.  My wife ordered the First Mate's platter.  She substituted out the oysters, and got an additional shrimp and a scallop.  Plus, we added one extra piece of halibut.... then, we split the food.  The scallops weren't anything to write home about.  I've had MUCH better.  But, everything else was great.  The one thing that our party of four didn't like..... the wait.  There weren't very many people in the restaurant.... and we were seated immediately.  But, we had to wait 10 - 15 minutes before we were approached for our drink order.  VERY slow on that front.

When you go down to Steveston you WANT the fish and chips to be great ... scratch that, you EXPECT the fish and chips to be GREAT.

Dave's for whatever "staple" it's been as a fish and chip place is a fairly large disappointment. I've been inside to eat, and had the takeout window and the quality is the same- although the service at the takeout window is really hit and miss depending on how busy the actual resto is.

The pricing is high for what you get - that is one issue that I have. The other issue is that the portion is substandard.

As far as the fish goes, it's OK, and as far as the chippies go, it's good. The coleslaw is a meh, OK.

The one issue that I had that isn't resto related is that when I was there eating on the outside picnic tables (me, my friend and our combined three little kiddies - who were running around the picnic tables - as we were finishing our meals) a guy who had obviously had eaten FAR TOO MANY fish and chips in his life came up to us with girlfriend in tow and told us in no uncertain terms that "I'm going to be eating here so can you make sure the kids are gone?"

    WTF?

Dave's is a classic. For locals you know to order take away and eat down at the docks so I can't speak for the at restaurant experience but the fish and chips are great.  You have to pay extra for tartar sauce but it is worth it.  Been a consistent source of pride for Steveston for decades and even with all of the new places such as Shady Lane etc Dave's is always busy.

Been getting my fish and chips in Richmond for over 20 years. Dave's used to be a favourite but sadly the last 3 times I've gone this summer it's been a disappointment. I've been doing the takeout and sitting outside on the picnic benches. The picnic benches are never cleaned and really dirty, lots of seagull droppings. The portions are getting smaller and the fish is really overcooked, all you taste is batter and oil. Come on Dave, you've been here in Steveston all these years, I'd hate to see you shut down like this.

I took an out of town visitor here on the weekend.  Dave's was packed!  With Pajo's being closed for the season I guess all the fish and chip lovers come to Dave's now.  We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table, but the staff were buzzing around the joint and got as seated as quickly as possible.

As for the food, I actually enjoyed my piece of Halibut and was impressed with the size.  A one-piece with chips is definitely enough food for me.  The fish wasn't overly greasy, like Pajo's, which was a bonus.  I upgraded my fries to poutine, but this turned out to be a mistake.  The poutine sucked, and the fries weren't very good, even though the menu says they chip up the potatoes fresh every day.  Bleh.  I'd be down with ordering the fish again, just not the poutine, and maybe skip the fries.  The slaw was A-OK.

So, with good fish, bad fries/poutine, and good service, Dave's ends up with an A-OK from me.

Very good British fish & chips.  My family loved coming in here - we're from Seattle,  love British foods, but have never been across the water - so copying the locals & eating our fish -and chips! - with forks as everyone else did was fun.

We really liked the fish, it was moist & the batter crisp out the outside - this is thick batter and we like it that way - but (to put it in perspective) Dave's is not as good as some spots we visited in Victoria.  (Cod $11 & halibut $13)  One problem:  the fried oysters ($10) were not very good - more slimy than meaty with a so-so batter.  Good chowder, okay poutine, and a sloppy salmon sandwich rounded out our choices.

Service was fair - it was pretty typical of what you'd expect in a place heavily populated with tourists, our waiter seemed more conscientious than the majority of staff.  We'll probably keep hunting around for a solid "go to" fish place in the area.

mmm who doesn't like a piece of battered up fish on a summers day.

Living in Richmond, especially the Steveston area, you can't turn your back without hearing about "Dave's Fish and chips" My Mother being one crazy fan of this place. There's even a picture of the cast of "Star Gate Atlantis" when they were here to visit.  So then I thought to myself "self? i think its time to try some dead fish" ;)

I ordered the 2 piece Halibut and chips which came with some pretty tasty slaw i might add.  The fish itself was ok. nice and crispy, the batter however,  was lacking flavor and the oil tasted like it needed to be changed big time! oh man! not a good start to my meal!.. There's nothing really much else to say in this review... its FIsh and Chips, how can you mess that up? nothing fancy or glamorous, so im not gonna knock it.. Its just simple English style food for happy people. Just change the fryer every now and then will ya? ;)

Besides, i would rather go to Pajo's. ;)

I liked the fish here, it was served warm and tasted really good. The chips were OK at best. The portion was decent, would like more chips though. The place was clean, service was good, but a bit expensive for a fish n chips place.

Wow - first to review!  This is a Steveston staple along with Pajo's.  I do have loyalty to Dave's, probably because it's the one that was originally recommended to me when my hubby and I moved out to Vancouver.

We continue to come here and take friends/family for fish and chips when they're visiting.  It's almost always busy, but they have a take-out window if you want to skip the resto.

IMHO, always get the light batter (not regular - it's WAY too thick otherwise) and you're good to go.  I always get either the cod or the halibut and I generally get a nice light crisp batter with moist fish in the centre.  Fries are okay, but not fabulous.  Onion rings are tasty.  They have the cute newspaper wrap if you have leftovers or are doing the take-out.

Marked down a star because I don't like the fries here and service is inconsistent to slow.  It's a Steveston staple and much better than the places along with water where all the tourists go.

When I first went out to Steveston, I had no idea it would be so popular! However much less due to it's rustic charm as an old fishing community than to the presence of pinup boy Zak Effron, the place was full of people, and Dave's was no exception. Asking locals where to eat and drink always resulted in Dave's, so we went to the restaurant hoping to get a seat and some good seafood. The place was packed so we looked at the menu, and seeing the huge assortment of seafood was asked about take out and were directed to a little shack on the side of the resteraunt with picnic tables and benches. They served everything to us wrapped in greasy newspaper that we took out to the very spacious docks, away from the Effron community.

The fish and chips were sensational! Between us there was cod and halibut and kalamari and it was all fried perfectly, complimenting the potato cut fries. They supplied a generous amount of well mixed seafood dips, instead of just the usual mayo and relish excuse for tartar sauce and ketchup. I dont think I've ever tried authentic fish and chips of that quality before, and it goes great with a lager and a couple of friends. I would go back again, and not just for Zak Effron.

This used to be the best fish and chip shop in town but we recently ordered take out and it was not very good.   Fish batter on the cod was undercooked and doughy although the fish inside was ok.  For some reason the batter on the halibut order was ok.  The chips were  not terrible but certainly nowhere near as good as they used to be.  Many small overcooked pieces more like eating potato chips.

Given the price of an order of fish and chips anywhere now is closing in on $15, Dave's needs to get back to where they were a few years ago but until I hear they have done so, I won't be back.

This is THE place for fish & chips - better than anything else in Steveston, or greater Vancouver, for that matter.  Breathtakingly fast, perfectly cooked, and never an issue with my request for a ton of extra lemon.  I'm not usually a fan of either chips/fries OR coleslaw, but here I practically lick my plate clean.  Onion rings here are also yummy, and Russell Brews make the meal a treat.  We ALWAYS get the halibut - I'm assuming the other fish is as good.
