To get to work, my Queen streetcar starts from Yonge to Carlaw. To get to Dark Horse Espresso, I actually got off the streetcar, buy coffee, get on the next streetcar.

And so! I'd do that just to get a coffee here :) they make amazing lattes! I also had the Americano and that was great as well.

I usually come in here at about 8:40am and it's pretty busy! Customers here are very friendly :) How do I know? Because this place is so small, I turn around and I'd almost crash into them.... happened a few times. They're apologetic, smiley, and very polite. It's not often like this at Timmies ;)

My actual rating for this cafe is 3.5.

I really think it's a flaw of mine, but I can't get into communal tables.  I know I would be a better person if I could, but I've tried, and I still don't like them.

The chai latte is very good.  The espresso I've had is a little too bitter.  I've been here numerous times, but never have felt particularly comfortable.  I think it has something to do with the general layout of the place.

Don't go there if you're in a real rush either.  I tried to pick up a coffee before work one day and got very stressed out because it took an unreasonably long time especially considering it wasn't busy.

Beautiful place for a coffee! Great location at queen and broadview - a great place to stop when strolling through Leslieville.

note that this is an espresso bar, so they serve 3$ americanos in place of a coffee. That being said, the americano was delicious!!! and they have soya milk.

I love the decor- I think the place is beautiful. However, when it comes to seating, it's seriously lacking. There are 4 armchairs - 2 which are right next to the bathroom; the rest of the seats are super uncomfortable! Would it kill them to get some padded chairs?? And while the big communal table looks good, the seats are all bolted to the floor.

The staff seemed disinterested and unhappy to be there - I like my coffee hangouts to be friendly, so a bit of a turnoff. At first I thought it was just cause it was new year day, but after reading other reviews, I think it's just standard fare.

I will go back and maybe try a latte, but only if there's a comfortable chair free.

I'm not a local, but Friend had a Groupon for car maintenance check at Toyota across the street. We came here early on Saturday morning: 8 AM early. Up at this ridiculous hour, I needed caffeine and lucky for me Dark Horse was right in front.

Great eclectic decor. There's a communal wooden table, benches or comfy chairs w a coffee table that you can sit at.

Baked goods are plentiful. We had the cheddar and green onion scone. Not too greasy, which is always nice.

Latte was strong and loved the presentation - latte art is always a PLUS.

Staff were hipsters (the super pretentious kind who roll their eyes at you because you're not 'cool' enough), but whatever .

All in all, a solid 4 star.

Dark Horse is about a 5 minute walk from my house, yet I rarely get in for coffee.

Their lattes are good, not the best in the city, and can be a little hit and miss depending on who the barista is the day you are there.

They carry the standard variety of baked goods from local bakeries such as Circle Square, including gorgeous mulit-berry muffins. Very delicious.

Service like their lattes can be hit and miss. I've had great service but also super surly, snobby service which kind of turned me of last time I was there. The decor is spacious and open, with tons of seating and free wifi. Really cozy.

I've had my fair share of iced lattes as I tend to get super HOT in the summertime.  Everywhere from NYC to the midwest to Cali.  But I've got to say, this place has the BEST ICED LATTES I've ever had, def try it. $4.

Other than that, the place has nice ambiance, isn't too loud, and has comfy furniture, which is key if you're like me and like to sit at cafes to work.

Be aware that there are no plugs, so come with your laptop fully charged.

Very nice place, great art. Coffee is good but here's my advice for staff: oh my gawd, please stop being so pretentious. It's almost embarrassing, it really is. That being stated, I do like the place and please do not misunderstand me--the staff are definitely not rude and they do know their stuff. You have to visit the place to really appreciate my point and I do encourage you to do so.

To be honest, I didn't think Dark Horse could get much better than it's Spadina location. Well needless to say I was wrong. The Queen E location has better ambiance, not constantly packed, and a great place to use wifi to be productive for a couple hours!

Definitely at the top of my list of favorite places!

One of the best coffee bars I have been to.  Although they don't have the largest selection of drinks and food items, the ones that they do have all really rich and tasty.   I had my usually espresso. The knock it out of the park everytime.

There is a large communal rustic oak table in the middle of the shop. It has a pile of newspapers and people sit all around it to chill, read, laptop, chat.  It's gives the place a friendly atmosphere.

The only reason it does not get 5 stars is that I hate paying 4$ for coffee.

As far as the coffee and the vibe of this place goes, it would get a 5, as far as I'm concerned.  They've got some of the best cappuccinos I've had on the North American continent.  (...the best cappuccino I've ever had was in Japan.  Weird, no?)  My friend got some fresh mint tea in a french press and seemed best pleased.  Staff is friendly, considering the constant stream of customers they get pummeled with.

The atmosphere is also super chill.  The huge tables and large picture windows in the front are a definite plus.  Excellent for people watching, and excellent for spreading your work out without having to worry about encroaching upon your neighbor - and the fact that they're communal tables means that you can most likely strike up a conversation with the person slugging down their latte next to you.  The industrial accoutrements are also lovely - exposed brick, wood tables, exposed pipes, leather chairs.

Overall, this is a great place to stop by if you're looking for a damn good cup of coffee in a pleasant environment with wonderful people-watching.

So why three stars, then?  1) I found the bakery items to be underwhelming.  Granted, I didn't go for the butter tart, which seems to be their star item, but the oatmeal berry muffin I got was super dry and tasted more like compressed cardboard than anything else.  After how awesome the coffee was, this was disappointing in the extreme.

    2) NO POWER OUTLETS.  Now, I realize this is a measure to keep people from camping out, but, seriously.  I had some work that needed getting done, and after scouring the establishment and finding nothing in the way of outlets, drastic measures had to be taken.  I ended up in the hallway of the office next door, sitting on the steps next to a wall plug so I could get my writing done.

I suppose this experience wasn't a total bust, since I got to make friends with the Vietnamese guy who was mopping the floor and laughing at me at the same time, and I seemed to engender a lot of sympathy from the office workers who were passing through ("Looks like you need a better office, eh?"), but, really?  If I'm forking out 4 dollars for a cup of joe, that should purchase me as much time as I want to stay at a coffee shop.  That is the way that coffee shops work.

Also, they don't take American debit cards.  Okay, okay, i know that Toronto is in Canada and paying for things with Canadian money isn't an unreasonable request, but still.  Panhandling for loonies outside so I can get my cappuccino is not how I wish to spend my vacation.  In fact, half of Toronto doesn't seem to take American debit.

Bewildering.  Just like how the Tim Hortons in Canada manage to accept both Mastercard and American paper money, but not Visa.  Oh, Canada, Canada, wherefore art thou of boundless mystery?

After being rejected by two other coffee shops on a Saturday evening due to early closing times, my (platonic) friend and I were delighted to be able to get hot beverages at Dark Horse.

Rather than ordering my usual extra-caffeinated sans-lactose latte, I opted for a hot chocolate this particular day.  Dark Horse wins for richest, creamiest, most chocolaty beverage.  It was served with an adorable heart created in the foam on top.  (I should have taken this as a hint.)  It was also somehow the perfect temperature: hot enough to warm my soul, but not hot enough to scald my tongue.

My (non-sexual) partner and I grabbed seats at the large communal table in the center and continued our catch-up session.  We both kept pausing mid-sentence when the make-out sessions (yes, plural) started to get out of hand.  We didn't realize Dark Horse was such a romantic place.  Maybe it was something in the coffee?  My hot chocolate certainly didn't have the dash of PDA.

The two of us weren't there long enough to become more than friends because they, too, have an early-ish closing time (8pm).

Dark Horse would be a great place for a first date!

I first herd of Dark Horse Espresso whilst at a west end cafe sipping a double and having asked the barista as to what kind of espresso they were serving. I was told it was Dark Horse. Having really enjoyed the espresso I decided to make a mental note to go visit the Dark Horse cafe someday. Having ventured out into the east end recently I headed into Dark Horse for a cappuccino.

Easily one of the best cappuccinos I've had in recent memory. Made from the same Dark Horse espresso I enjoyed earlier (they also offer as an alternative 49th Parallel's Epic espresso), it's just delicious. The espresso is a custom blend put together by Detour Coffee located in Dundas Ont. Detour also provides other coffee blends and single origin roast coffees for Dark Horse to retail but unfortunately they only brew espresso based drinks at the cafe.

The cafe itself is of moderate size. I really like the large communal table front the cafe bar. The brick walls of the place are adorned with large photographs of Havana, Cuba. It's a pleasant cafe to sit in. Staff work briskly and can pull a good shot as well as ornate your cappuccino or latte with pretty foam leaves. Aside from the drinks they also have a large assortment of pastries including muffins from Circles & Squares.

Worth venturing into and try the espresso!

I had already had my coffee thanks to Starbucks (don't judge me), but I was in the mood for the taste of something sweet! Kat F was going on her 2nd cup of coffee, but she suggested I order a butter tart, which is apparently a Canadian dessert. When in Canada...right? And so I ordered away!

Kat mentioned that butter tarts can be so sweet that she often has trouble finishing them, but no problemo here! This was delish! Mine had pecans on it and tasted an awfully like a pecan pie.  My butter tart also prompted the discussion of whether they should be served with raisins or not. No raisins in this butter tart and pretty sure I like mine without, but the pecans were a very nice addition!

Besides serving uh-mazing butter tarts this is a great place to get some work done. There's lots of communal tables downstairs if you're looking to make a friend or head upstairs for more privacy. There is free wifi, but you need a password to sign on (they text it to you).

My one complaint is that the restrooms are kinda far away, which is a pain in the butt when you're 7 months pregnant and have to go every 10 min. However, tasty butter tarts made up for it!

    In our party of four;

2 great lattes, each with different "art".
    1 very good iced latte
1 nice loose leaf tea in french press.

Nice vibe and friendly staff.  What more could we ask for?

Don't come here on a low self-esteem day, cause you'll leave feeling ugly. All of the baristas (male and female) are gorgeous in addition to being friendly and able to make a stellar cappuccino ($2.25).

They sell Tea In The Sahara looseleaf tea here (one of the only places I've seen it - the other Dark Horse certainly doesn't), and 100 Mysteries is among my most favourite teas ever. $11.50 for a box of it if you prefer to make it at home. This tea managed to make me a coconut lover 4Life and I usually hate it (see also: Bounty bars).

As others have mentioned, the decor is beautiful. Dark leather TULLSTA chairs, lots of distressed wood and stiff backed swivel seats at a huge communal table where everyone reads the newspaper and works away on their laptops (except when they're Spanish exchange students, like tonight). Don't forget to look up (I only recently did) - the ceiling is covered in chandeliers and beautiful silver tin-leafed tiling.

I would gladly dole out five stars if Dark Horse had more reasonable hours. 7pm close is too early for such a beautiful cafe in a bustling neighbourhood...I wanna hang out here late at night! There's always Prohibition next door...

Another beautiful spot in the east end to relax and chill with a cuppa. There's free wifi, communal tables and benches a decent amount of seating though not as big as it's twin on Spadina. This also appears to be a popular hangout for locals in the area, I can usually spot a group of cyclists or joggers outside on the weekend enjoying a post workout drink. Good selection of baked goods, I like the pumpkin or blueberry bran muffins from the circle and squares bakery-these things are moist and flavourful enough that you don't need butter.

One more literary bonus about the Dark Horses: they have a fantastic selection of newspapers for your reading pleasure. There's almost always a globe or star kicking around daily and on Sunday's folks clamour over the new york times.

The Dark Horse has pretty much been covered in previous reviews.  I have to say - I am a fan.  My favorite things here are the baked goods, and while I was walking down there to get a banana chocolate chip muffin the other day and I composed this jingle for them in my head:

    BA-nanananananananana chocolate chip!
    BA-nanananananananana chocolate chip!
baNAna chocolate chip, banana CHOcolate chocolate chip,
    BA-nananananananaNAna chocolate chip.

Then, they were out of Banana Chocolate Chips muffins, but they had banana chocolate chip loaf slices instead which turned out to be a fine substitute.

I occasionally get beans there to go, and although they don't roast the beans themselves, they only stock top tier product.

People here have raved about the communal table, which I am also in love with.  Not because I enjoy sitting with strangers, but because it appears to be made of reclaimed bleachers (I don't know if it actually is).  I much prefer the decor here to the new Dark Horse at Dundas & Spadina.

I only rate it 4 stars and not 5 stars because I really appreciate Mercury's feature menu where they have a new type of espresso about once a week - Dark Horse always uses 49th parallel espresso, and I would like to see a weekly feature added.  It is otherwise perfect.

love the woodwork and design of the space.

loved the latte. Cappucino was a bit burnt so needed a bit of sugar.

the place was busy, but there was this one guy......
One laptop, one empty coffee cup, one empty plate, but FOUR SEATS. This dud sat for 20 minutes and giggled at his utubes and chitter chatter.

Hey folks, please don't take up so much space when others are looking for a seat.

But hey, that's not the fault of the Dark Horse.  But a dark horse would have  rode over and trampled that slug!

Originality Spews from this espresso Bar. It falls in line with many of the other authentic coffee stops in the city - which I love of course!
The staple black americano always provides the perfect fix for my appetite every time. I should mention this, no regular coffee, just espresso based drinks - latte's, americano's, etc.
I am a big fan of the ambiance, the polite service staff and rustic decor.

Just HAD to check this place out after reading the reviews here. I really wanted an excuse to see the old neighbourhood now that it has been renewed. I once lived nearby when there were NO cafe's.... but now there are a few good choices and Dark Horse has a competitive edge. The espresso is rich with an almost Chocolate whisper at the base. YUM. Nice Cappuccino and I was nicely surprised to find Non Gluten treats to enjoy! The big guy had a Double Chocolate Chip cookie and commented that it was the best cookie he's had lately, with out realizing that it was G.F. and D.F. !

Sitting outside on the antique benches watching the countless streetcars go by. I happen to love the sound of streetcars. It made me melancholy for days gone by, yet happy to be here now to enjoy the moment. :-)

I hung out here yesterday afternoon doing work.  The staff were *super* friendly, and for the first time in six months I brought enough cash to buy a tin of tea - one that I had been trying to buy, literally - for months.  Definitely check our their 100 mysteries tea - as it is truly filled with mysteries.

Aside from my tin of tea I had a soy mocha latte (perfectly delicious and pretty) and a lemonade (very tart which saved me from inhaling the whole thing in 30 seconds).

Altho I love the Dark Horse, and I love their free wi-fi - it's not the best place to go and do work.  The workspaces are limited (pretty much only the communal table was comfortable for me) and there is only one power strip to charge your laptop on (which is not near the good workspace).  This meant that I sat at the communal table until my batteries got low, and then moved to a bench and had to hold my laptop on my .... lap.

So if you are going to go work there - make sure your laptop is completely charged and leave when the batteries die.  On a side note, the music was awesome - but like the Red Rocket (according to Kat) they re-played the same album more than once in a row.  Meh to that.

Can you take my order please?   Ms. Barista made me wait and wait while she talked and texted.  Then she served two people who were in a quasi-formal line-up behind me.  Feeling strangely ignored and unloved, by this point I couldn't see the charm in the communal table,  the sticky floors and dirty countertops.  Oh well.  Maybe next time?   I'm not sure.

I'm a self-professed coffee fanatic, and Dark Horse rates as one of my favorite haunts in the city. For some reason I get a really good vibe there and it's easy for me to sit and concentrate on work or other pursuits. The room is quite well air-conditioned, which is a big plus in this crazy heat. Plus, I love their big communal table. When did this come into vogue? All of a sudden they're everywhere--such an open concept wouldn't have flown AT ALL with my family while I was growing up. If my dad didn't secure a booth for the family he would act like the hostess really let him down or something.

I have yet to have a bad cup of coffee at Dark Horse, too. Lately I've been addicted to their lattes--perfectly steamed mild, strong espresso, nice art on the surface. Their baked goodies look really great, although I have yet to try the food. The only way I justify a $3.75 latte per day is by NOT buying five dollars worth of goodies to go along with it--unless I'm somewhere known for their in-house baked goods.

The only complaint I have is the bizarre flooring and fake leather chairs. For some reason things like this really upset me! The decor is beautiful--big windows, amazing wood communal table, awesome counter painted by my friend Matt Durant--but the floor is a bizarre jade-coloured marble-y weird tile! I imagine it wouldn't cost TOO much to update that kind of thing. And the leather chairs look like they were purchased at Loblaws. Not like that's a travesty, but something to fit the exposed brick and amazing bones of the place would be so much more suitable.

Hey, that's not why you go to a place like Dark Horse, anyway. I'm so glad to have them in the neighbourhood, too. I shouldn't complain.

Within walking distance from my house i think that the dark horse speaks to me the most from all coffee shops.  Gun to the head and i would say its the large wooden table, large enough to sit 12 people comfortably, that keeps this place intriguing. place an order with a couple of smiling easy going baristas, approach the communal newspaper, plop your bum on a red bar stool seat and read a few bites amongst a fortress of mac geeks.

theres also a lot of floor space; its clean looking.  the walls are high, made of brick, and look worn either because they are or are made to look like that.  and perhaps i feel just that much brighter, cleaner when im there because each wall flanking the street is virtually all window.

oh, yes.  the coffee.  how about that you say.  well they do care about their creations.  and it tastes good.  but im beginning to think that that's almost the monkey job of it all.  its the shop itself thats the magician at work here.

they do have a cool logo, cool ts for sale, not so tasty berrylike granola desserty breakfasty thingys, and pretty cool art on the walls.

    just my kind of illusion.

With places like Oddfellows and other new restaurants promoting shared feeding experiences, you'd think that Toronto's not only the centre of the world, but a friendly centre of the world, too. For you pessimists who don't believe that could happen, it's hard not to at least fall in love with the IDEA of relaxing and congregating with strangers.

Dark Horse is another of those places. It feels like the loft space I want but cannot have: clean yet rustic, bustling yet not intrusive, and incredibly homey at the same time. Your fellow customers look like the new 30-40 year old homeowners in Leslieville, all of whom are just as fiercely attached to this place.

And why wouldn't they be? The drinks are good, the butter tarts -- to die for. And it's a super for those slow weekend mornings. If you can get a seat at the communal table, grab one of the random dailies, sit back, and enjoy your day.

A busy coffee shop with lots of delicious looking pastries. Their espresso coffee is dark and syrupy and not in a good way. I prefer a clean tasting coffee which I find this is not. The staff can verge on being rude and most of the people hanging out look like they're hoping to be discovered. It's more of a hangout than a true coffee house.

We are on staycation and trying to fulfill the Toronto coffee conspiracy disloyalty card. We've already had cappuccinos not long ago today so ordered iced tea. But they wouldn't stamp our card. I thought the conspiracy card was about cafes, not specifically coffee, I thought that was dumb. I mean what if I was allergic to coffee but still wanted to support my local cafe? My husband went and got an espresso so he could get his card stamp - but it was kind of annoying that they wouldn't give it in the first place.

Either way, the lemon Ginger iced tea was delicious and the vibe was great.

I've only been here once but it was enough to make me want to come back and again and again. Located on a great corner in Leslieville, Dark Horse has carved out a niche for itself on a relatively eclectic block. The inside features random pieces of decor, like a mannequin standing at the doorway. The coolest part of the place has to be the communal wooden table that houses college kids studying, yuppies reading the paper and Leslievillians enjoying the sights of Queen East.

I had a jasmine tea which was delicious - served its own mini kettle and mug. I also had a brownie which was so delicious. If you're into coffee, they do a great job of making cute designs in the latte foam - and the cinnamon bun thing looks like ooey gooey goodness. This place is definitely worth a visit!

Dark Horse Espresso Bar is just a breath of fresh air out of many Starbucks and Second Cups' that take up the streets in Toronto.

As much as I do love those two places, I really love an original coffee bar like Dark Horse.

The staff are really friendly, always serving with a smile and make each and every customer feel special and important. Also, they are helpful in giving you suggestions when you are cutting down your desired options in terms of hot beverages and sweet snacks.

The drinks and food are at the highest quality and the prices are just right!

I met a friend at Dark Horse today for a coffee and it was excellent! I ordered a yummy cafe latte with cinnamon, which came in a HUGE pint style glass (which is very original in comparison to typical mugs) and the whole thing only cost $3.75.

In previous visits, I did partake in their muffins and cookies and they were all soft, fresh and melt in your mouth good!

Apart from the food offerings, the atmosphere screams artsy with unique paintings and wooden wall hangings lining the white walls. The furnitue is a cool combination of wood (wooden stools and tables) and comfy black leather chairs.

Overall, this is a great place to check out on the east side of Queen Street.

I use to absolutely adore this place - great location, large tables, and delicious lattes - but getting rid of plugs for laptop users so explicitly was really disappointing. I understand the need to manage loitering but I would rather be told to leave after 2 hours then not even have the option to work.

With its big wooden communal table in the front window and its steampunky, eclectic décor, Dark Horse Coffee is definitely one of the hippest places to sip a cup of coffee.  A lot of the regulars are "lifers," bringing laptops and prepared to stick it out for the day to get some work done, so make sure you claim your territory if you're having your coffee to stay.
