Review from Eric K.
I'm not usually a huge bookstore guy, but I found a lot of cool stuff at Dark Horse today. First of all, Dark Horse is a mostly used bookstore that has a variety of books but specializes in occult and counterculture/subversive books (they have others though).
The owner (well his mother-in-law bought the business in December) was very nice. When we first got in he greeted us friendly but let us wonder around. Once I started talking to him though I realized he was a really cool guy. He's a big music buff and has seem the Flaming Lips about 12 times. Oh and he had an Okkervil River shirt on. We talked about Sasquatch, http://KEXP.org, and a bunch of other music stuff.
As for books, I ended up purchasing three: A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, The Great Gatsby: A Graphic Adaptation by Nicki Greenberg of the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald (I LOVE Great Gatsby and this was an awesome find), and A Field Guide to Goblins The Goblin Companion by Brian Froud & Terry Jones (of Monty Python fame).
I love stores that have owners and workers that have a deep interest in the type of thing they are selling. And when they are nice on top of that it is an even bigger bonus. Dark Horse was like that. If you go in and browse a bit and get him talking you'll have a wonderful time and discover a lot of cool books you might not have found yourself.Listed in: Victoria May 2010
