Not to sound like a new agey, age of aquarius, hemp-loving hippie, but If you have any desire to optimize your health and enrich your life, book an appointment with a naturopath to complement your checkups with your family doctor. Specifically, book an appointment with Dana Lerman.
Dana is incredibly caring, lighthearted and funny. She's exactly what you wish your GP would be, but is too busy and overworked to accomplish. It's hard to describe the feeling of seeing a health care professional and having them actually give a shit about your overall wellbeing past the point of throwing a scrip in your face and telling you to check back in three months if "the problem is still there." A naturopath will never shoo you out the door or rush you because they've overscheduled their day. It's comforting to be able to talk about things without having to provide the abridged version because you feel like you're wasting a person's time.
Be forewarned that when you see a naturopath for the first time you'll feel positively overwhelmed. Your first appointment (at least an hour long) can be emotionally draining, as talking through your physical and mental health history leading up until today really refreshes old feelings and brings things to the surface. Thankfully, Dana is compassionate and very caring and you won't feel embarrassed or odd revealing personal details to her. She is professional and at the same time very approachable so you feel like you're chatting with an old friend. She takes thorough notes and writes up a "lifestyle prescription" that she keeps a copy of (so that at your next appointment she can follow up and easily remember what was previously discussed). She is also readily available by email to answer questions, change appointment times, etc.
Dana isn't pushy about products and works with the level of involvement you are comfortable with. If you don't have time to make weird hippie teas or do an hour of yoga a day, she'll work with that. Small changes make a big difference. She can also administer food allergy/sensitivity tests and I believe she also does massage as well.
Check your company's benefits booklet as a good chunk of naturopathy coverage is often included in group plans. Allegedly it will soon be covered under OHIP as well so there will be no reason to avoid trying it out!
