Need dental work, but don't want to fork over the big bucks to exorbitantly high-priced dental clinics? Dalhousie dental school might be just the answer for you.
As a patient at the clinic, you will receive your routine cleanings from dental hygiene students, and any exams/restorative or orthodontic work from dental students-and all under the supervision of a licensed, experienced dentist.
Prices here are a definite perk, as the fees are considerably lower than what you will find at private practices for virtually the same services. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Before becoming a patient, you have to apply to the clinic and undergo an assessment to determine if you are suitable for the program. If you do get "in", expect to spend a lot of time in the dentist's chair- more than what you'd spend at a typical office, because the student has to get the instructor's approval at each stage in the treatment process (one of my roommates in med school used to come here for treatment, and it took her 3 hours just to have a small cavity filled- yikes!). Also, expect to be a "frequent flyer", since the dental students need all the experience they can get. Also, it's important to keep in mind that this is a school, and thus the students will eventually graduate. So, if you find a dental student you like, once they earn their degree, you will have to either find a new student at the clinic or follow him/her to their private practice.
For me, the issues with scheduling lengthy appointments all the time just isn't a viable solution, so I trust my teeth to a private clinic. But for anyone who has the time (and the patience) for visits will undoubtedly enjoy the savings from going to Dal's clinics. Plus, you will help to build the education of a budding dentist who may become your own future dentist someday. Bonus!
