This place is fantastic! I feel a lot younger with my new hairdo! Keep up the good work!

Review from Ashley M.
I took a deep breath before rating and writing this...
I give this place two stars for two reasons: Adrianne (the stylist I had) was very nice, and also listened to my every need... she was not a pushy stylist like I have had in the past. Secondly, the salon is very cute and quaint.. but that's it.
The bad:
My..hair..was...BUSTED!!! Let me start off by saying that my hair is not "coarse" I had a Cuban father and a mixed mother... I have awesome hair. I can not blow dry it and leave the house, but I could wet it and it curls up. With that in mind... I'll continue the story..
I went here based on the YELP reviews... about how the color is fantastic.. yada yada.. Well, I have not EVER had color in my hair before and decided to get streaks since I was turning 25 I wanted something different. When out of light, I can barely see the color; It has only been a week and I can barely tell any color is in my hair. The blow drying technique is not conducive to the type of hair that I have... I need a comb attachment for my roots to be dried. Also, my hair...oh, my poor hair.. suffered through looking like a freaking hat (the look I was going for was wavy curls-- something that would like HOT since I was going out for my bday) when she was done styling it... I felt bad. I was speechless. I should have said something to her.
THEN.... my bill---- OH MY G*D!! It was $183!!!! I cried in my car to my husband. I was so devastated!!! I will never return. Sadly, I would rather visit a "black hair care salon" where they are HOT COMB happy :(.
The salon as a whole is not bad... but my experience was MORTIFYING!!!

Curl Up & Dye has everything I like in a beauty salon: clean floors, fun homemade artsy decor, great music piping through the speakers, great smelling organic hair products and creative, experienced stylists that like to funk you up.
Adrienne is a lively stylist-artiste who works magic with scissors and a blow dryer. I come in looking grown out, and depart looking goin' out--as in I'm goin' out cuz my hair looks FABULOUS.
I have yet to try one of their other beauty services but I always feel guilty for wanting to splurge. One of these days...! -

I'm not sure how I heard about this place, but I'm glad I gave them a try. I called to make an appointment and was set up with Mandy. I made sure to let them know I have super curly fine hair and they said 'no problem, they do all hair types'. I was a bit skeptical. I once had a stylist make me look like Richard Simmons. They sure enough do though. Every time I go in, I see all different hair types getting styled.
I have the worst combination of hair possible (fine, thin, curly) and my stylist of seven years moved to another state so I was forced to try a new place and a new stylist. I gave Mandy the benefit of a doubt and free reign to do whatever she wanted. The first couple times I got a layered style (which included a wash, cut/trim and blow out) for $35. It was great because it worked for curly and straight hair styles. For someone who was used to paying $70+ each time I went to the salon that was a steal. She doesn't go too drastic. She gave me bangs when I asked for bangs, she made some helpful suggestions about changing the length of the bangs when I went back. She also doesn't roast you with the blow dryer, burn your hair off with too much heat or yank on your hair like some stylists do. She does a very good job, best of all no pressure to say I like the horrible mess made of my locks (because there's no mess) and no awkward silence when I look in the mirror to find my hair has been royally screwed(because she hooks me up!). I don't think I could take another unfortunate grow-out phase for yet another bad hair style.
I wouldn't say that this salon is the best I've ever been to and Mandy is not the best stylist I've every been to either, but this place have plenty of pluses. The biggest plus is the price and their organic styling products. Mandy is always consistent, which is important when you rely on someone to make you look good. I have never gotten a bad hairstyle out of that place. They have a nice atmosphere and decor. It's themed after the glamorous pin-up girls of the 1940s. They offer a standing appointment discount of 10%. They do have an unfortunate 48hr cancellation policy which I find a bit extreme. I do understand that they are a business and must have had a lot of no-shows. It sucks how a few crappy people screw things up for everyone else. They realize the importance of keeping their clients happy so they are flexible about a lot of things. Someone mentioned in their review that Mandy doesn't talk your ear off... very true, she is friendly, conversational and nice but lets you relax without having to come up with witty things to talk about.
Long story short, I like the place well enough to have standing appointments for the next 4 months and I feel good about supporting a local business:-) -

Midtown, Detroit, MI
I liked my stylist but she left. They can be rude if you cancel. Its not open for long. They open late and close early. The manicurist is rarely there and the waxing/massage room is tight. I'm a larger woman so it wasn't easy. It's ok but since they were rude when I asked where my stylist went I'm not going back.

Review from S G.
Royal Oak, MI
After moving home and switching salons several times, I finally found a great stylist and a good salon. The only problem I have with this place is I feel that every single time I go back for an appointment the price of a women's cut increases by 5 dollars. The first time was back in December when the price "went up" 5 dollars from 35 to 40 due to the length of my hair being past my shoulders. My hair has been always past my shoulders since I've been making appointments here and a cut was just 35. The last time I went in the price rose again to 45. At the end of the day, it is just 10 dollars but I would much rather see that extra 10 dollars in my stylists pocket. Its unfortunate because I like my stylist and love my hair. If the salon wants to keep their clients, the price should not fluctuate so much.

I'm all for the revitalization of Midtown, etc. The location is convenient for me. But, I have to say that the quality of my haircut left me wanting more - on repeated visits. Could've been my stylist, not sure. I really gave them a try! But, I've moved on and found a better cut elsewhere.

I love this place, which is why I go out of my way to only get my hair done here. Mandy is absolutely magical with hair. She manages to take my weird explanations and gesturing and give me the exact cut and color that I had in my mind. Every time I come home after getting my hair done at Curl Up & Dye, my husband's jaw drops. I've even had people on the street ask me where I got my amazing color. The prices are incredibly reasonable, considering the level of service.
Also, the place is gorgeous. It's the perfect mix of contemporary and feminine, without being too much of either.1 Previous Review: Show all »

My, my, my!
Adrienne has got nothing but LOVE on this here yelp page!
I'm here to add to the praises. When I started going to Curl Up & Dye (about 18 months ago) I was recommended to see Adrienne by a friend who is also blonde. I've been a blonde all my life, and I'm suuuuper picky about how it looks. I explained my history to her, and she has given me nothing but sweet love ever since!
I've varied my color a little bit, darker in the winter, more colors in the summer, always blonde. Always amazing. The last time I went in, I was open to whatever suggestion to something new, and have been getting compliments on both my cut and color for the last 2 weeks. (check my pic)
Going to CU&D about every 6-8 weeks, I can honestly say that everyone I've seen walk out of there has been looking gooood! Is it the fabulous service of the stylists? Yes. Is it the quality of the product they use? Yes. Is it the way the silver concrete floor sparkles back at you when you leave? HELL YES.
Not to brag, but any & every cute hairdo you see in the Corridor came from within.
BIKES::: I park mine on the fence across the street. (I also get a finger wag from the stylists for wearing a helmet after getting my hair did.) -

Adrienne gave me one the best hair cuts of my life!! It was a very drastic cut (medium/longish into a pixie) and I don't think I will ever trust anyone else to do my hair ever again! I've been back twice since then and will go there for every trim and color I get from now on.
The entire atmosphere of the place is awesome!
I heart Curl Up & Dye!!! I heart Adrienne even more!! -

Got a haircut at this place because of the good reviews they have here. I told the stylist to trim as little as possible and my hair now is so short and it doesn't look even. The stylist was very nice but I won't go there again.

Myranda is an amazing massage therapist and esthetician! She has an original style and method, sort of mixing some yoga poses with deep tissue massage - it really kicks my body into gear.
My only disappointment is the lack of consistent stock of the Cass Corridor brand face products. These products work GREAT on my super sensitive skin! I've been waiting for three months now... -

When Curl Up & Dye says Adrienne can do ANY hair texture. They are telling the truth. I have about 3 different textures of hair from coily to wavy. She did my hair with such ease. I also got the best hair cut I could ever imagine. Pretty funky cut I must say. I have very thick hair and she tamed it well!!

Review from Caitlin K.

I happened to drive by late one night over a year ago, and a little piece of me fell in love with Curl Up and Dye because
1. I am a sucker for puns, and particularly for business names
2. The decor I could see from the streetlights
So I was jonesing for a good haircut recently, decided to consult Yelp for some ideas of a new place to go. Curl Up and Dye at the top of the list, and I was reminded about this Detroit gem.
AND they were able to fit me in, next day, right after work, for a haircut and a brow shaping.
First Impressions: Super friendly. Adrienne was waiting for me, and the receptionist was polite and helpful. They both ran through the zillions of complimentary beverage options available (I chose mint herbal tea). They even have a box full of change for filling the meters out front.
Service: this is an all-around great salon that obviously works to hire staff because they fit the personality and style of the salon. You can tell this staff really likes and supports each other. My stylist, Adrienne, is a fun, fearless chick. She listened the style I was looking for, offered suggestions (which I am open to) but was sure to guage how comfortable I was every step of the way. End result? A really great, edgy cut (she promised not to make me look like an elementary teacher).
My brows? Look really neat and well done. I am such a jerk cause I can't remember the girl's name, but she was really sweet and helpful.
Products: This place is stocked with the best natural beauty products on the market, and even have a "Cass Corridor" brand of hair products. Before they laid a finger on me, they made sure to check if I had any allergies.
Price: Cut $35 Brows $15- not bad at all! -
Review from Michelle I.

When it comes to hair stylists, I tend to live a monogamish lifestyle. You know... I have a stylist I love but I'll seek out other hairstylists (and salons) when I feel that my current relationship is "lacking." Or I need a change. Or I'm just bored. Or I find a deal. (Yelp deal to the rescue!!)
Enter Curl Up & Dye; along with their Yelp Deal, cool stylists and beautiful surroundings. I originally tried this salon back in July for a pre-wedding mani/pedi combo. Andi gave me the mani and pedi of my dreams. She was super sweet and patient -- it takes me ages to pick out polish colors, especially since these were the polish colors for the big day! She also was very sensitive to my over-ticklish feet and made sure to use a gentle hand when scrubbing away with her homemade scrub.
Recently, I decided to revisit Curl Up & Dye for my hair. I was referred to Mandy by one of my friends. Yep, Mandy is one cool gal! She knew exactly what type of coloring and look I was going for with my highlights/lowlights combo. I totally got the dimension I was looking for, along with the golden shade I often have stylists strive for without looking brassy or yellow. She also did a pretty mean cut as she freshened up my layers and my bangs. And the best thing is that she wasn't overly chatty...talking when the time was right, but letting me zone out/veg out when I needed to. (I am a strong anti-chatty hairstylist person...I have stopped going to stylists when they get too chatty and don't realize I that rather veg out in their chair instead of talk about the Real Housewives of Blech).
However, I have had yucky experience here which piggy-backed my really good mani/pedi combo. I was stupid and got a brow wax on a whim. Baaaaaaad idea! Not just bad, but super, stupid bad idea! A popular stylist here did my wax. As she was applying the wax, I already knew it was too hot and that I would burn --- and this is right after I said a couple of times that I tend to be sensitive. Oh yea, I did burn and then I got swollen. Immediately. And this was days before my wedding and the day of my bach party. Oh Fuck is right! I did mention something, errr, a-lot-of-something when I was leaving, but the girl at the counter just recommended putting some ointment on it and that's it! She said to call if it was still bad in a day. It was. I called. Never got a hold of anyone. Lesson learned I guess....a painful, swollen lesson. All I can say is thank g-d for aloe, alcohol (to drink the sadness away) and that I know how to wield a make-up brush.
p.s. the swelling was gone by the wedding day, thank you very much!
Despite this, I'm a fan of this place. The prices are fair, the salon is beautiful and staff is pretty cool. I am also a fan of their Cass Corridor products. Their house brand offers up a great variety of beauty products, like shampoo and face lotion. I tried their bug repellent which works well in Metro-Detroit bug season (but you will need something stronger for up-north bug season). So yea, despite the small (and swollen) stain in our relationship, I'll be back to Curl Up & Dye when my monogamish (hairstyle) lifestyle allows...Listed in: It takes a village...to keep…

Review from Dea A.
Let me tell you about Adrienne.
This chica is FABULOUS. She's fierce, sassy and gives the best short hair cuts in a 30 mile radius. Girlfriend has a razor and she knows how to use it.
When I finally came in during the summer, I was stoked to tell Caitlyn that I was ready to hack it off. But Caitlyn took a permanent vacation to SoCal. So that's how I met Adrienne. Sure, I was taking a lot of risk having a woman I never met before hack off all my hair. But I had a feeling that Adrienne was going to give me great cut / color -- and she did.
My red/purple bottom was perfect, my blond was finally one color and toned just right. And my cut! It was FRESH! It was hot! I LOVED IT! It kept me styling for a few months while I departed Detroit.
I came back today, my hair a total mess from neglect. I sat in her chair. And said -- do whatever you want. Adrienne told it to me straight when she thought something looked bad, and I just went with her advice as the cut came through. I have no idea why she kept asking me questions. Clearly, I am not the one with the blade. ;)
My advice for Adrienne's future clients: let her do what she do. She's one of the best stylists I've EVER had. I will go another lifetime searching for another Adrienne.
I have a fab new 'do. An awesome beautiful cut that I've always wanted to have but never even once vocalized it to her -- somehow -- Adrienne just knew. An intuition I'll sign up for any day.
Grand total for a whole new me? $35 + tip. (best deal in Detroit)
Out in less than an hour.
No bullshit. All fabulousness.
They now are open Saturdays, closed Sunday/Monday.
Need some change for the meter? No problem. A small jar that says "take what you need".

After a bad haircut at my other salon, I went to Curl Up & Dye to have Adrienne fix it. She did a great job! I didn't ever think it would look as good as it did when she was done. I've gone back since then for another lil shape up and, again, it was great. At $35, the women's cuts are a steal.

Review from Carole H.
My entire adult life I have searched for a salon that would make me feel like a million bucks, without spending that much. After trying everyplace from cheap cuts at beauty schools, to dishing out half a paycheck for a cut & color in Birmingham, I FINALLY found my beauty utopia. And within a bike ride's distance, none the less.
All the ladies who work here are bad-ass. Although I am a little more "girl next door" look and a little less tattoo sleeve, I have always felt right at home, and most importantly, have always left with the look that I wanted. Adrienne is my stylist, and she's the coolest. The decor of the place is fantastic - lots of silver, lots of mirrors, lots of little details you can't really appreciate until you see it - a great mix of girly, modern, and punk.
As long as I call a couple days ahead, I have never had problems getting an appointment for the day I want it. A cut & style is only about $35. And this isnt the kind of cut and "style" where they do it one way, and you rush home to tweak it back to how YOU like it. This is a cut and style where I can't even go straight home...my tresses are so bangin' I have to stop out somewhere to flaunt them for a bit. :)
If you recommend a friend, they give you a card for 20% off your next visit. I used this when I got a cut as well as color, and my total was somewhere around $80.
Businesses like this and Canine to Five are celebrations of both fantastic women-owned businesses, as well as great local Detroit spots. Love it. -

My hairr is really important to me, and to get the best you cut you need and experts to do this,.
A friend of mine recommended Curl up & Dye to me once before, so i said, why not let's give a try, i was worried about my hair, but the result was amazing, they can understand what you have in mind for your hair cut.
It was my first experience with them, and i couldn't stop going there every week, if you live near, you gotta try it out one day, you will love it. -

I've been getting my hair cut here for a year and a half or so, and Kara always manages to turn my vague idea of what I want into something better than I'd imagined.
This is the sort of place that would normally intimidate me, but everyone there is very nice and I've always felt completely welcome. I even took my boyfriend there for his first "grown up" haircut ( I won't even tell you where he was going before. Let's just say...no, never mind ), and he lived through the experience.
The prices are reasonable enough that I actually usually keep up with my style, going back every 6-8 weeks instead of the 6-8 months I used to go between cuts. Now that I'm getting a little gray streak, I'm considering going CRAZY and doing a cut & color next time... I know I can trust Kara to get me through it. -

Why hello, there nails! You are gold! ...and sparkly! Sparkly in that way that reminds me of carnival rides at the fair, or really cool looking motorcycle helmets.
In case you can't tell, I'm not really used to sparkles on my nails... or much color at all, to tell you the truth. But I have to say that Brenda at Curl Up & Dye is slowly making me develop a habit.
Each time I've been in, I've felt totally welcomed, at ease, and like I have permission to take a short little break out of my day to do something frivolous. Which is probably a good thing for me, since I have trouble just chilling out and doing nothing. However, with big oven-mitts on my hands post-parrafin, I have no choice but to relax and enjoy the good company.
I really appreciate that everyone here is so straightforward. They make you feel cared-for without getting all foo-foo. And foo-foo is something I can do without. Care, personality and humor, however? Those things go a long way in my book.
Still a 5-star experience, no doubt!Listed in: Happy Feet!, Purty Places...

After reading the reviews, i finally took the plunge and made my first appointment at curl up and dye. Although i was skeptical because i had heard mixed things about this place, I always love seeing and supporting local detroit business so i decided to give it a try.
When all was said and done, i was decently satisfied with my experience.
first of all, i LOVE the salon decor. It's very hip and trendy and definitely not pretentious in the least. It's located in the cass corridor which is an interesting neighborhood, but the salon is very well put together.
I got a hair cut and color. I actually love the color, even though it was a little darker than i expected, i really think it ended up turning out for the best. the cut was mediocre but that was my own fault for not asking for anything crazy. i don't hold that against my stylist.
If you live downtown, i would recommend giving this place a try. The best part about it is the prices were extremely reasonable, and they offer discounts if you refer friends! love it! -

I have recently moved back to the mitten and am trying to find hidden, or not so hidden, gems in the D. I miss the wonderful city life other destinations have afforded me and plan to find all things good with Detroit if it kills me....ha!
Curl up and Dye is located in the new Midtown area (formerly known as Cass Corridor) near Wayne State. As a former student at WSU I am semi familiar with area but even if you are not its pretty simple getting around (tho Public Transportation would be excellent!!)
The area is up and coming, cute boutique stores, Avalon International Breads (good grilled cheese!) and other shopping pleasures are nearby.
With WSU being a stone's throw there are all sorts of people walking around. Safe comfortable area, however it still had its blights a few blocks down. But I still dig it!!
So the salon is kind of a rock/glam combo. The employees there are very nice all with their own style from pinkish-red hair to normal colored hair from 1 or 2 tats to too many tats to count.
The decor was cool- silver everything!. It was clean and they carried their own brand of hair care products, amongst some other more well-known products. I, as a rule, only frequent salons that carry Kerastase as I use that as a measure of standing. However I was determined to begin my personal Detroit renaissance and why not start with a fresh hair cut in the D.
I just got a trim -1.5inches removed. Its a little uneven as its a littleshorter on the right than the left. I noticed it at the salon but did not say anything as I feel like the stylist should be the one to notice. I sometimes have a hard time bringing up things like that to the professional's attention. My fault I did not give her a chance to correct it so I maintain the rating of 4 stars withOUT that concern taken into consideration!
For $35 I was not dissappointed. I will probably return to support my local individual business owners as I want them to succeed!!
Go try it out! -

I've seen (not in the Biblical sense) more than a handful of scissor toting ladies in my day, and thus many a house of hair-cutting, too. Lessons I've learned: Some offer beer, compensating for the uninspired cut; others want you in and out faster than a Korean massage parlor; the more sterile the environment the, the worse the music, the less I have in common with the gal standing behind me holding the clippers.
My first experience at Curl Up & Dye was nothing like these previous places.
The staff was incredibly cool and friendly, the music and atmosphere was welcoming and right on, and Mandy did a great job cutting my hair. I asked for something between 50s greaser and 60s Mad Men cool --- she nailed it. I live in the 'burbs and work downtown, so stopping by on my way home is no biggie.
I know some guys have with high-maintenance hair --- lots of products, clean lines, time and effort --- and others who go to the cheap chain in the strip mall for something super simple. I guess I'm somewhere in the middle.
I'm willing to pay a little more for a better cut, done right and want to let you know that this is the spot I feel most comfortable going to for just that.
I look forward to going back today for my second visit. -

I'm a sassy kind-a-gal, and I like it when my hair style reflects my inner 'tude. So the funky Curl Up and Dye seemed like the perfect place to get a cut/dye and tidy up my eyebrows.
Receptionist was v. nice and I was able to get appointments on short notice twice without hassle. Adrienne, who did my hair, was great! Quick and personable, she got what I wanted pretty much down to pat and was good at freestyling the things I was unsure of. My only complaint would be that it ended up a tad shorter than I had wanted. Miranda (brows) was also super cool and didn't over-wax me.
Conclusion: Great independent place with lots of personality. They have monthly specials on their services and you even get a discount for your birthday! Be sure to really communicate what you want though. -

It all started with a gift certificate won from from a Detroit Derby Girls event. I've been a steady customer ever since. The price is reasonable and the cut is excellent. As regular guy, the best take-away is I don't need to mix it up with product to make my hair look good.
The friendliness and fun banter are big pluses as well. -
Review from Athena K.
It took me a while to get past the corny name and make an appointment, but I'm glad I did! Today I had my second cut and I'm very happy. The salon isn't too hipster, but has just enough class. The conversation is great. And most of all, they treat my hair right.
For me, $35 is a bit much for a trim, but I'm willing to put up with it because I leave happy and feel like I can trust them with my hair. For someone who is often haircut-shy, that's saying a lot. -

Curl Up and Dye is my absolute favorite place to get my hair cut. Jen (who is also the owner) does my hair and is always creative, & listens to what I have to say as well as putting in her own ideas.
The skill of the stylists reminds me of a place I had my hair cut in the Netherlands that I loved and have been trying to find a replacement for for years.
They are extremely environmentally and sociologically conscious, which is yet another reason I totally endorse Curl Up & Dye! They are also very reasonably priced (my haircut is $35 before tip). -

If you're a woman . . . hair is serious business. So serious in fact, that after going to Curl Up and Dye I won't go anywhere else. Curl Up & Dye is a different kind of shop, the kind of place where you are treated like a human being instead of the next head in a long assembly line of appointments. The stylists are unbelievably knowledgeable, edgy and friendly. The shop has a cute decor, with a clean appearance.
Organic products are the flavor of the day, and the owner has even started to produce an organic Cass Corridor brand. How awesome is that?
The price seems to be generally fair and I love how they treat all their customers with courtesy( even offering us something to drink, and having us fill out a questionnaire to make our experience more personable).
I have been going to Curl Up & Dye for about a year now, and my hair always looks awesome when I walk out the door! I have never been disappointed by my experience.
This salon is unquestionably necessary for the Detroit community.

I've been pretty infatuated with Curl Up & Dye after walking by the salon after hours and catching glimpses of the urban meets glam decor.
Props to CU&D for participating in Hawt on Yelp week... definitely nudged me to try the salon out.
Got a quick haircut (and a rejuvenating moisturizing treatment) off the specials list. Note the reference to the word quick - time flew by, and that's usually a huge reason why I postpone routine haircuts. The staff were all super friendly and efficient.
Only reason I didn't five star is because my side bangs were still left a little long and felt the same after 24 hours even though I asked to have them reshaped so I don't have to (gulp) self-trim ... maybe I should have went back to blunt bangs after all. -

Had to have a walk-in and I was totally accomodated. Service was great, and I know somebody said it was pricey, but for a straight up haircut and style it was less than my regular 'former' stylist, PLUS, I think it was a 20% discount if you show your Wayne State OneCard. That was huge. I will be back.

Called for an appointment and had to leave a message. Not a problem. Receptionist called me back a couple of hours later. A good thing. Explained my hair distress - my former stylist changed careers, I like bright colors and edgy hair and haven't found someone with the right fit yet. The receptionist asked if my hair was already dyed . . .
Yes, of course. She then informed me that she would have to have a stylist call me. That was a week ago. I thought about just walking in but then called a salon in a city closer to my location who will be cutting and dying my hair today. And yes, I'm sure it was just a oversight . . . my slip got lost, the receptionist got busy and forgot. But I wanted to give Curl Up & Dye my business, partially for the "Derby Girl" aesthetic and partially to support that neighborhood.
And they didn't want my business.Comment from Jennifer W. of Curl Up & Dye 7/5/2010

I should start off by saying that I am notorious for bouncing around btwn different salons. I have a girl I go to in Ann Arbor, another one in Royal Oak, and now one at Curl Up and Dye in Detroit! I easily get lured by discounts and really good referrals, even if I am satisfied with my current person. I guess I just like having a change and seeing what else is out there... along with my never ending search for 'better' pricing and a stylist that can make my hair look fabulous!
So it's no wonder that I ended up with a string of appts at Curl Up and Dye today. I got a referral card from Dea (thanks lady!!) and was scheduled for a pedicure, brow wax and color. I normally don't try that many services at a new place without knowing how good they are, but I felt confident from the reviews.
For starters, the location is not as scary as you might think. At first I was afraid because although I frequent Detroit all the time, I am comfortable in areas I know. And well, Cass Corridor is not one I am familiar with. But the area is not bad at all, and it's right on the edge of Wayne State's campus, which made me feel a little better. They have meter parking right across the street from the salon, and I was able to find a spot easily. They buzz you in, and that makes me feel safer too.
The salon itself is so cool... very hip and relaxing environment! It was also clean and free of any messes or clutter. The girl at the front desk was very friendly and even ran out and filled my parking meter while I was stuck foiled up in the chair.
Pedicure was pretty standard in terms of services. It was $30, which is reasonable. Brenda did my toes, and she was really friendly and informative. We had a really good conversation going, which helped to pass the time.
Myranda did my eyebrows and lip wax (yes, I said it.. ) Again, very standard. The only complaint is that I had to sit in a chair and scooch way down so I could tilt my head back for her.. it was kind of uncomfortable. I am used to being in a separate room with a table I can lay on, and it makes it more comfortable and easier for the person to access my face. I assume they have such a room since they do facials and massages, and although it's not a huge deal I would have preferred a set up like that. My neck was pretty sore after wards! $25 for both areas, which again is pretty standard.
Last, but not least, was my color. Adrienne did my hair, and although I was a little nervous at first (not to be offensive but a stylist with black, blonde and green hair can be a little scary!) I warmed up to her quickly. I was just afraid because although I try not to, I judge a stylist by what their hair looks like, because it gives me an idea of what they can do. I realize that is a representation of her STYLE, not necessarily her skill set. I felt bad because I sat down and said the words every stylist probably dreads "I'm not sure what I want to do... uh... what do you think?" Ultimately she helped to steer me into a game plan that I felt comfortable with. We ended up doing an all-over dark brown with a few red strips worked in around my face. She was really friendly, and again, we had a great conversation going the whole time. She did a good blow-out and even trimmed up my bangs for me. The color was OK. Not bad enough for me to complain but not great. It turned out darker than I was comfortable with (almost black, even after MULTIPLE shampoos at home) and the red highlights are almost non-existent. Overall the color is very flat and the shade isn't very complimenting to my fair complexion. In fact, I have asked friends, family and co-workers if they can see the red tones, and even after moving into different lighting the best response I have gotten is "Ohhh, uhhhh, kind of... I think so", and of course the worst has been, "Nope" In fact a lot of my coworkers though I did it myself.
That being said I still urge people to give them a try. Just because I wasn't completely happy with my results doesn't mean that someone else wouldn't have a great experience. Hair, skill, preference and opinion are varied.
This was a struggle because although I liked the atmosphere (really cool!), the customer service (really nice!) and the pricing (very reasonable!) I just wasn't completely satisfied with my hair. When you spend close to $100 on color and the results are comparable to a $7 box you can buy at the store then it becomes an easy decision... I probably won't be going back.
TIP: Although they offer tea, water and I believe coffee, if you're like me and like taking a drink in with you there is a Biggby Coffee a few blocks away on Woodward. -

The stylist was named Mandy. I would not recommend her for men's hair, but she may be great at women's.

I love this place, from its location in the D, to the sharp tongued banter of the staff, to the perfect attention to customer service (including the immediate attention to whether or not you'd like a beverage immediately as you walk in) The best part about them is that they are Environmentally Conscientious from their recyclables container, to their earth friendly nail polish and their organic hair dye. I have found my home salon!

great service! just a small tad pricey, but definitely worth it. i'd been cutting my own hair for years because i was never satisfied with paying money for mediocre cuts i'd get at most other salons. I'm pretty sure the girl who cut my hair was Mandy? (i think that's what her name was) she was very sensitive to my needs (i'm a waitress and wanted edgy, choppy bangs but not something that would always get in my eyes), and really took the time to make sure i was happy with the length (by the end i had her hack about 8 or 9 inches off) and the specific kind of style i wanted. i brought a picture with me and she definitely got my hair to look exactly how i wanted. :D
i also got a brazilian wax here, and the lady who did it took extra care to make it as pleasant and painless as possible. they use a lot of homemade products so i was glad to hear that the products used probably weren't going to irritate my skin any more than the wax itself might. -

Moved here about a year ago from San Francisco, this place (and this whole area, in fact, with Goodwells and Avalon right around the corner and Traffic Jam nearby) definitely reminds me of home. Exactly the right amount of unintimidating hip-ness, and oh, yeah, the haircuts & manis are great too! Love Mandy and Andi (hair and nails respectively). Mandy even did my very first dye job, the products they use are very natural (and some are even "homemade" under their own Cass Corridor label), it's the only place I've been where the dyes didn't smell like a chemical spill.
My 10 year old son proclaimed it "too fancy" but my 7 year old son loves to come here for a little mow down and a mini-mani of his own. Always welcoming, a little bit of therapeutic heaven in the middle of Detroit.
