My wife & I went there for the first time tonight and we were both very impressed. It was very crowed and we had about a 20 minute wait for a table but it was more than worth the wait. The roast beef & Yorkshire pudding was traditional English style and delicious. The Farmer's Lunch cold plate was equally good. And the Bailey's Chocolate cheesecake dessert was the best cheesecake I've ever had.

The atmosphere is authentic British pub. Strangers openly talk to each other, a very warm and inviting place. The staff were incredible for such a super busy place - never once showing any signs of stress or being overwhelmed. And a great selection of British & Irish beer.

If you're looking for a fast food or "The Keg" type of place - this ain't it. But if you're looking for traditional English pub with traditional English fare and environment,  then you can't get any better on Vancouver Island than the Crow & Gate Pub!

On Vancouver Island?   Looking for a place for lunch or dinner?   Don't miss the Crow & Gate Pub, at Yellowpoint, south of Nanaimo.   An authentic British Pub atmosphere, with garden seating in the summer time, & a lovely rural/pastoral ambiance, valley & mountain vistas, plus a changing fresh sheet menu to entice.   If you like pie, they do great berry pies in season, & the pecan pie is a gem!    About 5 miles towards the sea, from the Island Highway, easiest route is to turn seaward at Cedar Road, just south of the Nanaimo Airport.    You'll enjoy the pastoral views en route, and easy to follow the signage to the Pub.   Enjoyed a Christmas season dinner there, and clientele were from all over: S.F., Victoria, Calgary, & me from Salt Spring...lots of visitors, plus locals...the best kind of local "hang out".   Enjoy!

This is by far my favorite place to eat when I am in the Nanaimo area.  I crave it when I am away.  I had the best blueberry pie ever here.  It haunts me to this day.  I wish I could visit Vancouver Island more often during blueberry season, just for this pie.

This is a wonderful place to enjoy a traditional British Pub.  The staff are friendly and professional, and the atmosphere is spectacular.

I highly recommend leaving the confines of Nanaimo proper to eat here.  I have a hard time believing you'd be disappointed if you are looking for this type of establishment.

Amazing English pub with plenty of atmosphere and outdoor seating, set on beautiful grounds (with black swans!) in the middle of nowhere. The only downside is that the rest of the world has already discovered the place and after driving all the way out you'll be hard pressed to find a table for lunch on a sunny weekend.

Unless someone told you about this amazing English Pub you would never know it existed.   It is off the beaten path down a nice stretch of road and eventually you end up in front of this flower filled English garden with a beautiful pond, flowers, and lots of tables and chairs outside.

You order at the window from a list of traditional English fare and some not so English.  Go sit outside with your pint or bottle of wine and they will deliver your most yummy meal to you.

I loved it when I walked to the bathroom and there sitting by the bathroom entrance was a table of four older English ladies playing a game of bridge.  Just passing the time away with something to wet their whistle and libations to fill their tummies!

It was a beautiful day and place.  The only thing in SF I can compare it to would be the Pelican Inn over near Muir Beach. Except the gardens were so much better at the Crow and Gate Pub.

Congrats to Bryce and Linda for such a fantastic place.

    Best English Pub.  Best Pub.
A great place to go to slow down and mellow out.  Great service combined with ordering at a window.  Seems weird, but it works.  When it is your turn to order, you get as much time and help as you need.  Plenty of beer choices and many single malts.  This place makes me feel good.

This place is worth the drive up from Victoria, it's worth the wait in line for a table and every morsel of food is as good as the last. The Cheddar Ploughman's Lunch is indescribably good. It's the simplest of all meals, a bit of salad, a huge chunk of cheese, bread and a handful of grapes. So what? Well, it's the sheer freshness and quality of ingredients. They can't be beat anywhere. One thing to note about me is I hate cold potatoes and I eat every bite of the potato salad every time I come here.
Enough about the food, the beer here is everything, it's a real (almost real) English pub folks. The selection is great and if they don't have what you crave than anything you select will do as the sheer ambiance of the place will trick you into thinking your at some great London pub drinking the local swill.
One recommendation is go to the Crow on a cold rainy day and hope for a seat near one of the two wood fireplaces, it's worth the drive off the beaten path.

This place is as authentic a british pub as it gets. The food is great - english pub fare at a good price. The brandy bread pudding is phenomenal. It's definitely a good restaurant to treat unsuspecting friends with, even if they're not into eating in pubs. It's an experience unto itself. Like stepping back 100 years for a good old fashioned meal.

Pretty hard to beat....I remember reading a review in the (Victoria) Times Colonist that said they do British pub food better than the British and it is totally true. Everything is really well done from the decorating to landscaping to the food to, of course, the drinks.
