Review from Laura M.
Boston, MA
This shouldn't be my kind of place, I know, but the 1.75 liter bottle of Grand Marnier on the back bar just warmed my heart.
Not much to say except the pours are beyond generous, the pool tables are in remarkably good shape considering their surroundings, and the regulars are generally polite and chatty.
Don't be a yuppie prick, tip the bartender well, and you'll have a home for life. -

Boston, MA
This IS my favorite dive bar.
Doesn't get to crowded and is generally chill, plus the owner is cool and keeps control generally.
It's hard to find cheaper beer or mixed drinks even in South Boston. The bartenders are generous with the pour so tip well and they will make sure you will want to come back.
Free pool is a huge plus and the Jukebox blasting Bananaphone is always good for a laugh.
If you can fit in with the old school OFS crowd you'll have a good time here.
It's pretty much everything you can expect from a (the) Southie dive bar, so when you walk in know that's just what you're going to get... unless you are looking for "Big Buck Hunter". -
Review from Steve L.
South Boston dive bar par excellence. Unfortunately, nobody at Whitey's speaks French.
Whitey's at 5pm features the die-hard regulars. The kind without jobs and with a little ailment we in the business call Wernicke's. Look it up. $3 Guinness drafts, which are likely the best in the city simply due to the frequency of tap pours. Rum and cokes are are served in pint glasses, heavily poured with the coke being added as an afterthought, for flavor.
Best bet is to hit Burger King next door for the BK Stackers, which are essentially the dollar-a-patty Western Cheeseburger (minus onion rings) before heading over. Nobody minds the food (no kitchen!) and cheap beer complements fast food burgers surprisingly well. -

South Boston, Boston, MA
I've been here several times, and yes it is a dive bar, and about as divey as a bar can get. No cc's, bathroom is pretty foul and smells pretty bad, decor is similar to what I would expect in an old trailer park and it's pretty dimly lit. With that being said, the people are really nice, the beer is pretty cheap, and it's one of the very tiny group of bars in Southie that is open until 2 AM. They also have free pool (which may or may not be available, depending on the day and time of night)

Boston, MA
This place is nowhere as sketchy looking as people make it out to be...that or I am just used to sketchy from traveling all over and seeing my fair share of dive-y establishments.
The pints of Guinness really are superb though i definitely get the feeling the price you pay (I paid $3 per) depends on who you are/who is serving. PBR pints for $1.50 are really the only way I can justify drinking said beverage.
A guy I met from Iceland got beaten at pool super quickly by the locals so I had no inclination to step up to that challenge. Some of the players even had the billards gloves haha.
It started filling up quite a bit once it got to be about midnight but before that people were enjoying their early Saturday night somewhere else.
All in all a good place to go with some friends if you want to swill some cheap domestic drafts (or a Guinness) with some charming and entertaining regulars. -
Review from Thom G.
Boston, MA
I'm here a at least twice a week. I play on one the of the league pool teams that meets every Monday. They have free tables that I learned the sport on. I have seriously saved over $5,000 in quarters with the dollars I would have paid for countless games of pool. That right there is the reason why they say this place is so busy on Monday nights.
The owner is about as nice as they get and regulates the crowd as to keep out the dozing Southie junkies (only after 8 pm when the he comes in) and trouble makers. Its as divey as you're ever gonna get. The regulars are nice and welcoming. Its the "don't start no stuff, won't be no stuff" kinda crowd.
Any single night the place can be bumpin and packed to the gills or so empty you can hear the ceiling fan squeak. Its the only bar on the west side of Southie open past 1am. Thats great and all but it brings a volatile crowd between 1 and 2. Everyone gets last call at whatever $7 a beer spot they just came from and pack into Whitey's where they get four beers and better service for the same amount of money. So the already hammered patrons buy up liquor like its going out of style.
Now lets talk money, or lack thereof. Domestic drafts are $2, PBRs $1.50, bottles range from $2.50 to $3.50, liquor double shots are $3 or $4 depending what you drink, Guiness draft is $4, mixed drinks come in pints that are 3/4 full of booze with 1/4 mixer and they're $5. You can literally, with tip, drink for a night under $20. The owner and employees never charge for non-alcoholic fountain beverages.
The shirts behind the bar were made because of this site, actually. One group of yelpers came in and spent hours drinking and talking to the owner. They said Yelp had the bar rated #1 night life spot in the entirety of Boston (#2 was symphony hall at the time). Of course no one believed them but sure than poo when I pulled it up on my smart phone, they were right! That has since changed, but the reputation sticks.
The bar being a dive you have to anticipate a dive. Surfaces aren't pristine, the floor isn't something you would eat off of and the bathrooms look like the one from Trainspotting (sarcasm). There is a Burger King right next door and you can use their facilities until 10pm, if it really bothers you that much. This place gave me faith in bars. I never knew that all those things in my head from when I was younger about what a bar is supposed to be actually existed in Boston. So come on out and have a drink. Good luck playing pool there. We have some of the best shooters in southie. But if you do want to try your luck just sign your name on the white board near the respective table (there's 2). -
Review from Michelle S.
Oakland, CA
After months of failing to stumble upon divey, but lovable establishments in Boston, I am pleased with this discovery.
My best friend from college was in town this weekend and I had quite a busy weekend planned. Of course, some of that had to be cancelled because my friend and I cannot handle hangovers like we could ten years ago. Ouch!
Anyway, we ventured to Southie for my roommate's birthday and struck dive bar gold with this place on our way back to the T. We knew from the dark windows and non-visible signage that this place would not disappoint.
The green t-shirt that says "Boston's #1 Dive Bar" and hangs behind the bar does not lie. The only divier place I've ever visited turned out to be a meth den. (I don't do meth--my ex and I learned that fact after visiting).
Blue laws be damned! Not only did my epic and cheap Jack n' Coke come in a pint glass, but it was quite a heavy-handed drink. I almost couldn't finish it. I have a reputation for braving some dodgy parts of Oakland and San Francisco for a high-value and heavy-handed pour of whiskey. And if I have difficulty downing whiskey, you know you struck dive bar gold.
According to the old dude who wouldn't stop yammering with us, they really encourage women to play pool there.Listed in: Dive In, Whiskey and Bourbon, Beating the Blue Law Blues

Astoria, Queens, NY
I sauntered up to the bar, snagged myself a PBR, got manhandled and tossed upside by my rowdy group of friends who fit in seamlessly with the locals. I proceeded to drink my brew and through my arm around a handsome, Celtics-shirt-clad man playing pool who welcomed by gesture and invited me to write on the infamous wall.
Brightly lit. Pool table. Scribbled on signature wall. Cheap ass beers.
I'm in love. -

"Oh my gaaawwd, whattayu fouahteen?"
That's how I was greeted by a clone of Dicky Ecklund/Micky Ward's mom who was sitting at the bar with a friend. Then I had a "shot" of Jameson that was basically a rocks glass full of whiskey for like $3. Great! Sure, the people there weren't exactly my crowd, but no one hassled me except for Melissa Leo, and that was just funny. I don't know if there's a light switch in the bathroom either, I fumbled around for one and ended up lighting my way with some glow in the dark bracelets I had in my sleeve.
Honestly, if I wasn't with a large group, I would have been completely terrified and run as fast as I could all the way back to JP. But as I experienced it, this joint was a blast! -

Out of the Southie bars we went to, Whitey's wins on several counts.
No1: Rocking Music
No 2: A happy welcome upon entering
No 3: Busy barman would not let me pay him for my ginger ales. Yes, I tipped.
No 4: Cheap drinks for the peeps. Heavy pours, too.
Best bar. -

Chestnut Hill, MA
I came here with my friends last Sunday after the St. Patty's parade. THE. BEST. TIME. EVER. Danny, the owner, is just the nicest person ever. The bartender ended up giving me my first beer free since it was from the bottom of the keg that he had to replenish. So this tells me that they really value getting your money's worth from your beer. A true Irish trait, I'd think. The clientele was very friendly. There were a group of NYC firefighters who I think were part of the parade that ended up starting a bit of a dance circle. Not a bad way to get down on a Sunday afternoon. I love that they have a pretty sweet jukebox here where I spent a grand total of $7 to get 5 songs played. Definitely got my money's worth (although we were there for 4 hours and I didn't hear one of them play so I suggest queuing it up earlier by paying a bit more if you really want to hear that song).
5 stars for Whitey's!Listed in: The Places I Go Out

Like Toby said, I LOVE THIS BAR. I love everything about this bar.
I love that this bar makes most dive bars I've visited look classy.
I love the regulars and their circa 1983 windbreaker fashion.
I love the Law and Order reruns on the TV.
I love the regulars, like the guy who said my headband make me look like Michael Flately, and wanted me to dance on the bar.
I love the jukebox and everything that comes out of it.
I love that there's no name on the bar.
I love the regulars and how they cheered when we ran through the door, mid 3 legged race.
I love the free pool, and the bottle of baby powder marked "not for your ass."
I love the regulars, like grandma in the corner wearing 2lbs of makeup and 10lbs of costume jewelery.
I love the microwave in the corner, for BYOM (bring-your-own-munchies).
I love the cheaper-than-dirt drinks.
I love the no nonsense bartender.
Have I mentioned that I love this bar? -
Review from Krys A.
Whitey's was definitely the place to be on Saturday.
Being greeted by a dozen regulars at Whitey's after a 2 block 3-legged race was the sweetest thing ever. They were cheering for us telling us how awesome we did for coming in last place! Haha. One regular sitting at the bar was truly deeply excited for us, I just remember her telling us all that matters is we made it and we did great. How friggin cute?!!
Is this an over the top dive bar? YUPPPP!!!
Did someone say cheap beer? YUPPPP!!!!
We're people crawling all over the pool table? YUPPP!!!!
Was there baby powder on the shelf that said, "Not For Your Ass?" YUPPPP!!!!
Was mingling with the regulars awesome as fCuk?! YUPPPP (Even the scary women in the corner wasn't THAT scary, okay maybe she was) lol.
Photos on the wall are awesome.
I think we all want to be welcomed where ever we go, and Whitey's regulars definitely welcomed us with opened arms and cheers!
And yes its true, this bar does not have a sign out front, ... but once your in you'll know where you are. -
Review from Johnny Z.
Boston, MA
I don't want to say this is the worst bar in the world because I've never been to places like Bangladesh, Rwanda, or Haiti. But I can say with 100% certainty that this place is, by far, the worst bar in Boston. I've been to crackhouses where I've felt safer. Also, that had less crack. Seriously, at no point did I feel like I wasn't about to be stabbed by the locals. Remember the scene in Star Wars when Luke Skywalker walks into the bar and the two aliens attack him before Obie Wan Canobie steps in and cuts the guys arm off? Whitey's makes that place look like Cheers.
The clientele was a collection of mobsters, wannabe mobsters, transvestites, addicts, punks, criminals, pimps, and fugitives of the law. And the men there were twice as bad.
People in the know tell me this place has gone downhill since the original owner - Whitey McGrail died. And he was shot one day while bartending. So, apparently this place has "gotten much worse" since the days when customers would walk in and shoot the bartender. Good times.
I could go on, but I think my review might get kind of negative after this point. -

I love Whitey's SFM.
Why? Because I showed up wasted at 1pm on a Saturday and no one cared. I also was tied to Krys and everyone cheered for us even though we are the worst 3 legged racers ever, we could have literally crawled there and gotten there faster. I think they may have even believed we won??
There is a bottle of baby powder that says "not for your ass" next to the pool table, but i put it on my ass and no one said anything!
Sprawling out on the pool table? No problem.
The regulars were amazing, but the older woman who was all bejeweled and bedazzled in a beret and copious makeup wins. I want her to be my best friend. It can be just like Sex in the City and I will be Carrie and she will be Samantha!!! And one of the older men without a full set of teeth at the bar will be Mr Big. And we'll do it on the pool table. Eww what?
Anyway I really like it here and will be back.Listed in: Places To Be Sketchy, Drunken Adventures

Whitey's...you had me at "that'll be a buck fifty".
Great space. Pool tables that they let the lovely ladies of our pub crawl lay across to pose for pictures. Pictures that the bar regulars took with a million of our cameras as the whole crew posed.
Definitely place to get your drink on for 6 quarters a glass. Freindly, tolerant and just plain cool. -
Review from Caitlin M.
Boston, MA
Let's talk about Whitey's. It is my favorite bar in town. The drinks are dirt cheap and very strong. The juke is usually pumping out either 1. old school irish tunes 2. "i love this bar" by toby keith, 3. "come on eileen" by dexys midnight runners or 4. "i want to sex you up" by color me badd. Well, usually not #4, that was just the case last night.
The Guiness is $3. The mixed drinks are no more than $4 and worth every penny. Just watch the bartenders make your drink. You're basically drinking alcohol with a splash of a mixer. (Gin and tonic, hold the tonic...basically).
Now for the bartenders...best in the city. Danny is probably one of my favorite people on earth and greets me with a big hug everytime I come in. Danny's brother Declan works there too. (He even had limes for me last weekend!) Then there's Gerry who I can't really understand because of his Dulin accent but is hilarious nonetheless...and quite the dancer.
Warning: Whitey's is a real dive bar (complete with eccentric locals and regulars) but you should give it a shot. Even if you don't like it the first time, you should give it another try. It takes a little time to get used to this place.
Also...Whitey's is open to 2am and gets pretty packed around 12:30 when the other southie bars are at last call. But the bartenders will take care of you first because you've been there all night.

Great place for:
-$1.50 draft beers (don't look for imports, you goose)
-$5.00 furiously strong, PINT-sized mixed drinks ("It comes in Pints?")
-2 Pool Tables (Good luck taking the table from the well-practiced regulars)
-Friendly, accommodating staff (helped us serve up a cake!)
-Interesting mix of patrons/regulars
BONUS MULTIPLIER:
-Drive-Through Burger King next door!
-Did not eject Yelpers on 2 separate occasions for what might be considered ejectable offenses elsewhere.
-There is a microwave, and you can bring your own microwaveables! (Next time, I'm bringing taquitoooss)
INSERT MORE QUARTERS:
-Less eye candy than my grandfather's assisted living.
-Hard to locate.
-Way too isolated for a quick pint.
-T-access?
-Is not Razzy's -
Review from Katia M.
Cheap beer, lots of locals, and my favorite bartender in the world. Plus, one of those awesome internet jukeboxes. Seldom do I end the night anywhere else, and half the time I've already started it there.
It's an awesome place. Certainly not for the club crowd, but if you ever wanna go, you should come out with us. We only have, like, the best time ever! -

San Diego, CA
Spending a few hours in Whitey's was the highlight of my four days in Boston. This place is about as down to earth, friendly, eccentric and classically South Boston Irish as you're going to get . It's definitely a super-dive, but the Guinness is delicious and the people are incredibly warm.
Pros: 10 minute walk from the Broadway red line stop, surprisingly friendly local crowd, lotsa old school Irish paraphernalia on the walls, free pool, $3 drinks (all the time)
Cons: Bathroom is a bit messy.
Caution: If you're looking for a place with edgy mood lighting, a bartender who knows how to pour a superb apple martini, and a dude in the bathroom to help you take a wiz then this place isn't your best option. You'll end up being disappointed and will probably write a negative review on yelp. -

LOVE this place. I came here with some friends to celebrate my last night in Boston before I moved to out to the west coast. I found the place on Yelp and didn't fully understand what yelpers were saying by how divey this place was until we stepped inside.
From the outside, you can't see a sign (it's really small right above the door), and the only reason we were able to tell it was Whitey's was because we knew it was next to the Burger King. We knew it was a lot more laid back, but we were still all overdressed. We walk in, and aside from us 5 girls (in dresses/skirts), there were probably only 2-3 other ones (in tees and jeans), and you could tell we were just...out. of. place. Initially, it was just awkward, so we sat at the bar and ordered some drinks - nothing like a little liquid courage.
We chatted with the owner, who was absolutely adorable. He is such a genuine guy, and he even offered to throw me a coming-back-to-boston party! Before you know it, we were being asked to dance by the locals, shooting pool, and getting bought drinks left and right. At one point in the night, I was all of a sudden getting picked up and didn't know why I was in the air.
You can't beat dollar drafts. You can't beat free pool. And the regulars are just great (some can be a little sketchy, but overall, they're harmless). I can't WAIT to go back the next time I'm in Boston. -
Review from Jason B.
The best.
Shots as big as your head.
Regulars who do things like dye their beards green, tear the sink off the wall, and usher you into a back room to show you their tattoos.
Megadeth on the jukebox.
A quality pint of guinness.
Dollar fifty drafts.
Good times. -

I swear to god I was drinking here at 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning.
The bar looks shady as hell from the outside and once you step in you realize that it is indeed quite shady.
The drinks are cheap and service is good, I just could not shake the feeling that I was going to get stabbed. -

What's not to like about Whitey's? I can't think of one thing.
They have no signage other than just painting the exterior green. So you kind of need to keep your eyes open... upon entering you'll notice that green continues throughout the entire interior (different shades of course).
Leave your glowsticks at home, because this is definitely a dive bar that caters to the local crowd. A crowd that doesn't do an awful lot of raving.
The beer is well priced, the staff is friendly, they have good music and pool tables... what more could there be?
Lastly, they have a pay phone in the corner so you can call your P.O. anytime... just as one nice young man did while I was sitting by it.Listed in: Ultimate Southie Pub Crawl

Cheap, cheap prices, free pool, free popcorn.
Cheap, cheap, cheap, beer & alcohol prices, just don't expect a piece of fruit in your mixed drink (or beer). They pour a decent Guinness, and a strong mixed drink. It looks worse from the outside. Once you get inside, it's as nice as any of the other old bars. There's no sign outside, just look for the beer signs beside the Burger King.
If you want a joints with martini glasses, and lots of yuppies/preppies then this place probably isn't for you. -

Whitey's! I cannot believe that I didn't know about this place earlier (being a huge Guiness fan). Met up here with some co-workers after work on a Friday night.
$1.50 dollar beer. Enough said.
Not only that--the vibe here is SUPER friendly and everyone (i don't know if it was just that night) was really open and un-assuming. The crowd was also a bit younger than I initially was expecting, which was a pleasant surprise. Also there are some really interesting regulars, making this a fun place to people watch too (it is a dive bar after all).
All in all it was a great night and of course you can't argue with the cheap beer and free pool. Will definitely be back. -

Boston, MA
Great bar, friendly owner, super nice staff, extremely outgoing regulars. Don't be intimidated when anybody and everybody comes over and wants to hear your life story. Everybody here is so friendly; the atmosphere is really unlike anything you get in the city nowadays.
Drinks are ridiculously cheap, like inflation never happened since 1980. The jukebox is great, mostly because the crowd has such an eclectic taste in music ranging from Irish trad to 90s grunge to electronica.
There are people here 7 nights a week, even on Monday and Tuesday. Finally a place in Southie open till 2am for us industry folk to hit last call! And pool is free - just don't forget to sign up. I can't recommend this bar highly enough. Get out of your comfort zone and check out the place with the green awning and fluorescent glow. -

I walk by this bar with no name twice a day to and from the broadway T stop. I am not going to lie it use to scare me. At 8 in the morning the door would be open and the bar lined with regulars. That opinion change on Saturday when I stopped in with 15 or so other yelpers for a bar crawl. The people were awesome, the beers cheap, and the drinks strong. $1.50 for a beer? Seriously people check it out. Every hour is happy hour.

How the EFF have I not written a Whiteys review yet? I suck at life. Anyways... I was reminded yet again of how awesome this place was when I added it as a spot on the Bar Crawl I organized that happened this Saturday. They were our second stop and we three legged raced into there and had to immediately pound beers to win. When we came in the door the place started cheering for us. All the old Southie locals were high fiving us and cheering. We were complete outsiders and they took us in like family. The reviewer who said how unsafe he felt is a little girl. Its awesome in there. The drinks are stiff, the people are awesome and you can pretty much drink there all night on 20 bucks. Its absurd.
Yea, its a dive. Yea, you MAY see some shady characters. All in all, its just a bunch of local regulars spending time together at their favorite bar.
Additionally...There is a popcorn machine and a microwave.. for some reason... we didnt figure out. But if you wanna pop a bag of Secret Pop while you let the crowd in here entertain you.... go right ahead. Oh ang... Whiteys opens at like 7 AM.. just in case you need to get drunk BEFORE work or anything....
I love it here after hours when it really fills up, but I love it even more in the middle of the day when I'm with a mass of people.
Thanks Whiteys.. you were by far the favorite bar on the crawl!Listed in: A few of my favorite…
